One could argue all day as to what Darren Aronofsky’s mother! is or isn’t all about. And while its message is surprisingly straightforward, the one thing it isn’t really about is the thing in the title: Mother! isn’t much about motherhood at all. So what is mother! and why does it need that exclamation mark which troubles my spell-checker so?
Jennifer Lawrence is front and centre throughout, filmed almost entirely in close-ups and lengthy, unbroken shots which follow her all around the house. That house, painstakingly renovated by Mother (because of course it’s the sort of movie where no-one is named in the script) is the home...

The Strain season 3 feels as though it needs to pick up the pace if the premiere episode is anything to go by...
This review contains spoilers.
3.1 New York Strong
To heck with The Vampire Diaries. So far, The Strain has been a gorehound’s dream, even if the overarching plot spins its wheels too much at times. As we pick things up, the Master’s full plan is yet to be revealed and the human vampire hunters have almost, kind of successfully taken the fight to the Master.
Well, the season three premiere holds true to form as the plot barely ticks forward while we get to revisit most of our major players from the sides of darkness and light. While the episode was loaded with action, it was a pretty generic way to kick off the season.
Appropriately, we start things with Doctor Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll...

After last week's brief foray into the realm of romance, "The Walking Dead" returned to its roots tonight with the introduction of some new people, some new threats, and some new plans for ass-kicking, courtesy of Rick Grimes and co. For those keeping track at home, that makes three episodes in a row now that "Twd" has been firing on all cylinders. Can our survivors – and more importantly, the showrunners – keep up this pace for the rest of this back eight?
All signs are pointing to yes, what with tonight's introduction of the Hilltop community and some more revelations about mysterious big bad Negan, and his people, the Saviors. The episode's title, "Knots Untie," refers to Jesus's uncanny ability to escape any restraint that binds him, though the installment spends most of its time weaving together a complex backstory for the Hilltoppers, who look to our main crew to hold...

Don't expect to snap a selfie with Natalie Portman's Academy Award if you ever stop by her house! The Oscar-winning actress, who picked up a Best Actress trophy for her work in "Black Swan," now admits she has no clue where the statue is now. "I don't know where it is. I think it's in the safe or something. I don't know. I haven't seen it in a while," she says in a candid new interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "I mean, Darren [Aronofsky, director of 'Black Swan'] actually said to me something when we were in that whole thing that resonated so deeply," she explains. "I was reading the story of Abraham to my child and talking about, like, not worshipping false idols. And this is literally like gold men. This is literally worshipping gold idols — if you worship it. That's why it's not displayed on the wall. It's a false idol.

Natalie Portman made a rare red carpet appearance when she attended a UCLA gala in La on Tuesday. The actress posed for photos with Younes and Soraya Nazarian, the founders of the Center For Israel Studies, and gave a heartfelt speech to the crowd inside the event while honoring Amos Oz, an Israeli author and journalist whose 2002 memoir, A Tale of Love and Darkness, has been turned into a movie; Natalie directed the big-screen adaptation and will be premiering the film at the Cannes Film Festival later this month. The Academy Award winner and Harvard grad opened up about her directorial debut in the most recent issue of The Hollywood Reporter and also had lots of insightful, intelligent, and poised musings about the Israeli government, the culture in her adopted home of Paris (she relocated to the city with her husband, French choreographer Benjamin Millepied, and their 3-year-old son, Aleph...

I mentioned on today's podcast that my three nominees for Best Original Song for the 2013 Critics' Choice Awards were "100 Black Coffins" from Django Unchained, "Skyfall" from Skyfall and "Ladies of Tampa" from Magic Mike. Of my nominees only "Skyfall" made the official list of nominees, but hopefully the Academy will right a couple of wrongs as both "100 Black Coffins" and Matthew McConaughey's "Ladies of Tampa" are among the 75 songs listed as in contention for a nomination at the 2013 Oscars. The Academy just released the following list of which all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips. Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes...

She scored a touchdown during halftime at the Super Bowl, and now Madonna is properly tuned-up to take her show on the road.
On Monday, the CEO of Live Nation Global Touring announced that Madonna would launch her 2012 world tour in support of her upcoming Mdna album on May 29 with a show in Tel Aviv, Israel. He told Billboard magazine that the outing will be the singer's most extensive tour in terms of total dates and will take her to Australia for the first time in 20 years.
She'll play a combination of arenas, stadiums and outdoor sites, hitting 26 European and Middle Eastern markets (including London, Paris, Barcelona, Milan, Abu Dhabi and Berlin) before turning her attention to the U.S. Her North American shows start with an August 28 gig in Philadelphia and include 25 dates.

Don’t have a vested interest in Super Bowl Xlv? That’s okay, there’s still plenty of commercials and movie trailers to watch in between all the tackling and the scoring. One trailer in particular involves a certain Avenger that you may heard about. Captain America: The First Avenger will star Chris Evans (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Fantastic Four) as Steve Rogers/Captain America and will see a release date of July 22, 2011. Marvel released this poster with an awesome image of Evans standing, head down, and holding the infamous ‘mighty’ shield, battered from World War II over his legs. The word “Avenge” lay across Evans’ chest and simply put, gets the geek meter spinning out of control.
Much of the film will be grounded in Captain America’s roots during World War II when a super soldier serum was invented in the Marvel Universe. Also starring in the film is Hugo Weaving (Matrix,...

Black Swan is the fifth feature to come from the lunatic vision of Darren Aronofsky and with his first Oscar nomination pending, let's look back on his career. While Natalie Portman is front and center for the entire hit movie and Mickey Rourke had a similarly feature-length closeup in The Wrestler, Aronofsky is the star of all five pictures. If not, he has to be considered the co-lead. He's not invisible as a director is the point even though he's not onscreen. But which faces has he used the most to sell his masterpieces and/or follies (depending on your point of view)?
Left: Aronofsky; Right: His parents (I believe) in The Wrestler
Let's investigate.
The Darren Aronofsky Acting Hierarchy
(Quantitatively Speaking)
5 Films
One character actor has appeared in every Darren Aronofsky feature (and so has Aronofsky's dad, no joke). Will they both appear in The Wolverine, Hugh Jackman's...
