Early reactions to Superman are here, and they are shocking
Image
Unlike its titular characters, the previous iteration of the DC Extended Universe failed to soar high and impress superhero fans. As such, the studio was presented with the difficult choice of shifting its focus and trying to capitalize on the sagas and characters that did find success, or risk it all and start from scratch once again with no second chances. Eventually, a new version of the DC Universe was announced, and the first movie set to take place in it is none other than Superman.

It would be an understatement to say that all eyes are set on the Man of Steel. He currently holds the weight of an entire interconnected universe on his shoulders, and fans are eager to learn if he can still fly despite that or not. Fortunately, Superman's social media embargo has been lifted in anticipation of the movie's release, and we finally have some long-awaited answers.

‘Superman’ First Reactions Say Film ‘Soars’ as a ‘Thrilling Start’ to James Gunn’s DC Universe; David Corenswet Is ‘Exceptional’ Sharing ‘Off the Charts’ Chemistry With Rachel Brosnahan
Image
The social media embargo for James Gunn’s “Superman” has been lifted, bringing with it the first reactions from members of the film press. The Warner Bros. tentpole is the latest superhero movie from “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Suicide Squad” writer-director Gunn, who is now overseeing DC Studios with Peter Safran. “Superman” marks the launch of a rebooted DC Universe on the big screen. Film press are calling it a “thrilling start” to Gunn’s DC Studios.

Film critic Bryan Sudfield praised “Superman” as a “bold yet faithful” feature adaptation of the DC icon. He added that Gunn’s take felt unique while still staying true to the character’s roots.

“‘Superman’ soars with heart, humor, and style—a bold yet faithful take on the iconic hero,” he wrote on X. “James Gunn sets a fresh tone while honoring the character’s legacy, and David Corenswet shines with sincerity and strength.

'A Thousand Blows' Hulu Series From 'Peaky Blinders' Creator Lands Knockout Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Peaky Blinders is set to make its long awaited return to the small screen by way of a Netflix movie soon, but before we get there, the new series from creator Steven Knight is garnering rave reviews ahead of its release on Hulu this week. Titled A Thousand Blows, the period boxing drama's Rotten Tomatoes score was just unveiled to be a solid 89% at the time of this writing, with some even calling it better than the Cillian Murphy-led crime series.

"A Thousand Blows could even end up being placed on a higher pedestal than Peaky Blinders," said Sabrina Barr from Metro UK, adding: "A bold claim, I know, but one I feel confident making considering how absolutely phenomenal it is from start to finish." Martin Carr from Cbr echoed those sentiments, while at the same time praising star Stephen Graham:

"Everything audiences have come to expect from...

First Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Reactions Have Critics United
Image
Lucasfilm's selection of streaming "Star Wars" shows has been hit-and-miss so far, but "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" looks poised to join the hit list, based on critic reactions to the first two episodes (which drop at 6 p.m. Pt/9 p.m. Et tonight on Disney+). Created by the "Spider-Man: Homecoming" team of Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, the show is about four youngsters who stumble across a mystery that whisks them away from their comfortable homes to more perilous corners of the galaxy. Their journey leads to them linking up with Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law), a Force user of as-yet unknown origins.

Social media embargoes for the early episodes of "Skeleton Crew" have lifted in the UK, and the general consensus is overwhelmingly positive. Nicola Austin described it as "'80s Amblin adventure vibes with a sprinkle of early ['Mandalorian']," and she wasn't the only critic to name-drop Amblin,...

Skeleton Crew First Social Media Reactions Reveal What To Expect From Disney+'s Latest Star Wars Series
Image
The first two episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew were screened in the UK this weekend, and that means we have the first reactions from fans, influencers, and at least a couple of critics.

They're as overwhelmingly positive as you'd expect from this type of screening; however, we'd be remiss not to point out that critics sent screeners of the first three episodes are not allowed to share reviews and reactions until 9pm Et/6pm Pt...which is when the first two instalments hit Disney+.

That means critics from the likes of The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Rolling Stone, and other respected outlets won't be able to share their verdicts on social media or in reviews until people are already watching the show.

The buzz surrounding Skeleton Crew is relatively minimal, something that likely wasn't helped by the mixed response to The Acolyte earlier this year. Then, there's the fact that,...

The Boys Season 4 Is Now Certified Fresh On Rotten Tomatoes - But With A Series-Low Score
Image
The Boys returns for its fourth season with a 3-episode premiere tomorrow, and critics have been sharing their reviews online since the embargo lifted yesterday afternoon.

The first wave of reviews were mixed-positive, but with 43 verdicts in total now added to Rotten Tomatoes, season 4 of the Prime Video series has been officially "certified fresh" with a score of 84%.

"Boxing in the political arena with a bloodied smile, The Boys' fourth season is grim and even a little glum while holding up a cracked mirror towards modern society," reads the Critics Consensus.

A very respectable score, but it's still a series-low for the acclaimed comic book adaptation. Season 1 sits at 85%, 2 at 97% and 3 at 98%.

Have a read through some of the reviews and reactions at the links below.

The Boys Season 4 Gets (Mostly) Positive First Reviews - But Are The Cracks Starting To Show?
Image
The Boys are back in town for a fourth season of Prime Video's ultra-violent comic book series, and the review embargo has now lifted ahead of Thursday's 3-episode premiere.

The majority of critics were able to check out the full 8 episodes, and while the initial verdicts are (mostly) positive, it's looking like season 4 might prove to be the show's most divisive yet.

It sounds like The Boys is still just as wickedly funny, outrageous and shocking as ever, but it may have actually become too dark for some critics, who feel the sociopolitical satire has begun to hit a bit too close to the bone, making for a "depressing" watch.

Season 4 has also been criticized for its repetitiveness, treading over the same ground as previous seasons without pushing the story forward into new territory.

As things stand, The Boys season 4 sits at 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. Have a read through some...

Avatar: The Last Airbender first reactions are mixed, with the visuals praised but some performances lacking spark of the original
Image
The long-awaited premiere of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender is less than a week away, and the first reactions to the series have been trickling out. After original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino exited the project in 2020 due to creative differences, fans were a little apprehensive, but it sounds like the streaming service has largely gotten it right, or, at the very least, it’s better than M. Night Shyamalan’s movie.

Our own Steve Seigh was a big fan, saying, “I had the pleasure of previewing the first seven episodes of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender for JoBlo.com and I’m thrilled to say that it’s fantastic! It’s full of outstanding performances, one-to-one shots from the original, and new elements to get excited about! I say this as a die-hard fan of the original animated series. I wholeheartedly love this version of the show.

The Flash First Reactions Are In
Image
It’s been an incredibly long journey for the Fastest Man Alive on the big screen. But various false starts later, Warner Bros.’ The Flash is finally about to take a bow in theaters. Directed by Andy Muschietti (It) from a script by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey), the film in part adapts the classic DC comic Flashpoint, in which Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) goes back in time to save his mother from death and completely changes the present, creating a dystopian alternate DC timeline. While it doesn’t look like the movie will get too bogged down in the many subplots of Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert’s miniseries, The Flash will incorporate quite a bit of DC movie history into its runtime.

Case in point: Michael Keaton returns as the Dark Knight of the Burtonverse for the first time since 1992’s Batman Returns. Bringing a major dose of...

Jared Leto in Morbius (2022)
Morbius First Reactions Suggest This Vampire Movie Sucks
Jared Leto in Morbius (2022)
After years’ worth of delays, Sony’s Morbius will finally premiere on April 1. But with a new blockbuster movie also comes reactions from fans who got to see an early screening. And for the most part, the reactions are not good. Chief complaints include dodgy CGI, poor storytelling, and an uneven tone. Of particular note are the post-credit scenes, which one tweeter called “some of the Worst you’ve ever seen.” Not too much praise for lead Jared Leto, but the response to Matt Smith’s over-the-top villain seems to be positive.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Morbius is the latest in Sony’s Spiderverse. Leto plays Dr. Michael Morbius, a brilliant scientist who suffers from a rare blood disease. After he performs a transfusion on himself, Morbius becomes a living vampire, cursed with a thirst for blood but given enhanced senses and strength. Morbius goes up against Smith’s Milo,...
