The music documentary Takin’ Care of Business took care of business at the inaugural Round Top Film Festival in Texas.
The film about Canadian rock musician Randy Bachman – founder of the bands The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive – earned the Audience Award at the debut event in the small town 75 miles east of Austin. The feature directed by Tyler Measom explores how Bachman searched for decades for a precious musical instrument that was stolen from him – his beloved 1957 Gretsch 6120 guitar on which he wrote the hits “American Woman,” “Takin’ Care of Business,” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet.”
“We are so honored to receive the Audience Award from the Round Top Film Festival!” said Russell Wayne Groves, producer of Takin’ Care of Business. “From the incredible festival founders, Shanna and Skylar Schanen, all the way to the amazing volunteers who kept things running smoothly, we are just humbled...

Guitarist Randy Bachman of the ’70s rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive is the focus of the 2024 documentary Takin’ Care of Business. The Canadian band scored success with hits including “Takin’ Care of Business,” “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet,” “Let It Ride,” and “Roll On Down the Highway,” and hit #1 on the charts with their 1974 album Not Fragile.
Bachman left the band, which originally consisted of bassist Fred Turner, drummer Robbie Bachman, and guitarist Blair Thornton, in 1977. Since then, there have been multiple iterations of the group. In 2009, Randy Bachman and Fred Turner formed Bachman & Turner, and in the fall of 2023, Bachman-Turner Overdrive reunited for a tour.
Writer/director Tyler Measom’s new documentary, which will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, focuses on Randy Bachman. Randy, along with Tal Bachman, KoKo Bachman, Lorelei Bachman, Bannatyne Bachman Matson, Takeshi Kaneda, and William Long, are featured in the behind-the-scenes look at the rocker’s life.

Heart have been forced to postpone all of their upcoming tour dates in 2024 after Ann Wilson recently underwent a medical procedure to remove “something that, as it turns out, was cancerous.”
“The operation was successful & I’m feeling great but my doctors are now advising me to undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy & I’ve decided to do it,” Wilson explained in a statement. “And so my doctors are instructing me to take the rest of the year away from the stage in order to fully recover.”
“Please know that I absolutely plan to be back on stage in 2025,” Wilson added. “My team is getting those details sorted & we’ll let you know the plan as soon as we can.”
Wilson did not disclose the type of cancer she has. She concluded her statement by saying, “Respectfully, this is the last public statement I’d like to make on the matter.

For the past six months, Burton Cummings, founding singer and songwriter of classic rock group the Guess Who, has been in a bitter legal dispute to wrest control of his old band’s legacy. Tim Bachman, a founding guitarist and vocalist of Bachman-Turner Overdrive, has died at the age of 71.
Bachman had been in hospice care after battling brain cancer, and his son announced his passing in a Facebook post. His death comes only a few months after the passing of his brother Robbie (Bto’s longtime drummer) in January.
Tim was one of the three Bachman brothers that helped form the classic rock group, originally under the name Brave Belt. He performed on Bto’s first two albums — Bachman-Turner Overdrive (1973) and Bachman-Turner Overdrive II (1973) — appearing on such hits as “Takin’ Care of Business” and “Let It Ride.”
He left the band in 1974 (replaced by Blair Thornton), citing a desire to spend more time with family, although his brothers claimed he was fired for violating the band’s policy of no alcohol or drugs on the road.

The documentary Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind, directed by Martha Kehoe and Joan Tosoni, is an intimate look at a prolific singer-songwriter who enriches and is enriched by the history of Canada. Most of the world knows Lightfoot as the singer with the recognizable baritone who put out hits like “Sundown,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” and “Early Mornin’ Rain.” But in his native country, he is a national treasure. Before international fame, in 1967, he actually wrote and performed a piece called “The Tale of Canada” for the country’s 100th anniversary. Long before anybody had heard of Neil Young and Randy Bachman, they were two teenagers growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and trying their best to make their mark on the tiny local music scene. Bachman found success first when his group the Silvertones (who would eventually morph into the Guess Who) became the most popular band on the teen circuit and drew large crowds to their shows at dances and community centers. Young, whose own group the Squires made less of an impact, revered Bachman and learned much about guitar simply by watching him play.

Randy Bachman has had a surprising career, one of the rare acts to score two Number One singles with two different bands: “American Woman” with the Guess Who and “Takin’ Care of Business” with Bachman-Turner Overdrive. A new documentary, Bachman, written and directed by John Barnard (The Sheepdogs Have At It, Menorca) explores his life, from his childhood in Winnipeg, Canada to his conversion to Mormonism to his touring life today at age 75. The movie now has a release date; Filmrise will release Bachman March 26th on iTunes, Prime Video,...

Ringo Starr recently announced the details of his 30th anniversary tour with the All Starr Band, which will feature Men At Work’s Colin Hay, Santana’s Gregg Rolie, Toto’s Steve Lukather and Average White Band’s Hamish Stuart. “It’s become what I do — I go on tour,” Starr recently told Rolling Stone‘s Rob Sheffield. “So we’re starting in Japan in March, then in the summer we do America. I’ve got plenty of time so I love to play. And of course, being the drummer,...

They were a long way from Times Square and the Ed Sullivan Theatre, but Thursday night in Las Vegas, David Letterman and Paul Shaffer were back sharing a stage.
This time, Letterman was supporting his long-time band leader as Shaffer opened a club series with his band the Shaf-Shifters at the Caesar’s Palace lounge Cleopatra’s Barge. This segment of the Shaffer nightclub stand continues through Saturday night, with dates also scheduled Oct. 11-13 and Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.
The reunion marks the first time the two have performed together since the end of Late Night in May 2015.
About a half-hour into his set, Shaffer called Letterman up to the stage, announcing, “This is a show-business friendship of the highest order. It actually goes beyond a show-business friendship. It goes into actual friendship.”
Letterman warmed up with an old casino joke, then recalled that Shaffer told him he always wanted to play Vegas.

Thursday was a night of major star power inside the tiny, 180-person-capacity Cleopatra’s Barge at Caesars Palace as legendary Late Show With David Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer opened the latest installment of his monthly Las Vegas residency. The 90-minute-plus Paul Shaffer's The Shaf-Shifters lounge show welcomed a roster of special guests that included Letterman, Shaffer’s former boss, who did 15 minutes of stand-up; Kenny Loggins, on a night off from his own headlining gig at the Wynn this week; and Randy Bachman of Canadian rock band Bachman Turner Overdrive.

The most emotionally revealing segment in John Barnard's documentary about Randy Bachman doesn't involve any of the Canadian rock god's friends, family or musical collaborators. Rather, it involves what everyone seems to agree is Bachman's closest relationship, that with his guitars. Leading us on a guided tour of a warehouse containing his collection of a seemingly endless number of the musical instruments, Bachman beams at them with pride and joy, lovingly handling them as if they were newborn babes. It's a charming sequence. Too bad, then, that Bachman, which received its world premiere at Toronto's Hot Docs festival, otherwise fails...

The United States is “my country, right or wrong,” of course, and I consider myself a patriotic person, but I’ve never felt that patriotism meant blind fealty to the idea of America’s rightful dominance over global politics or culture, and certainly not to its alleged preferred status on God’s short list of favored nations, or that allegiance to said country was a license to justify or rationalize every instance of misguided, foolish, narrow-minded domestic or foreign policy.
In 2012, when this piece was first posted, it seemed like a good moment to throw the country’s history and contradictions into some sort of quick relief, and the most expedient way of doing that for me was to look at the way the United States (and the philosophies at its core) were reflected in the movies, and not just the ones which approached the country head-on as a subject.

If you’re a music lover, there’s no excuse for you not to have Sirius-xm Satellite Radio (unless you’re broke) – the service, and its brethren are basically a necessity. Not only do you get radio programs hosted by legends like Bruce “Cousin Brucie” Morrow, Randy Bachman, and Nancy Sinatra, but there’s also a radio station for every musical niche in existence.
One of the best of those “niche stations” is Deep Tracks, which takes its programming from non-single album tracks, B-sides, and other obscure songs by famous artists. While we were dancing to no. 1 hits by legendary bands like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and The Rolling Stones, other good songs faded into the background, and crucially, Deep Tracks is helping music lovers to discover these classic tunes.
As music buffs, we should all feel a responsibility to help introduce fellow fans to our own musical discoveries,...

Chilliwack, B.C. - A co-founder of iconic Canadian rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive had a sexual relationship with a girl between the age of 11 and 14, a B.C. judge was told this week.
“I felt the relationship was very sick,” Stacy Bohun, 24, recalled during court testimony in B.C. Supreme Court, where Tim Bachman is on trial for sex assault, sexual interference of a person under 14 and sexual touching of a young person.
“He would get me to sit on his lap and kiss him,” she added. “One time he tried to French kiss me ... It was just a lot of weird, inappropriate things.”
A ban on publication was imposed in 2010 on the name of Bachman to shield the identity of the complainant. But the bans on both Bachman and Bohun were lifted Wednesday by Justice Neill Brown after an application by a reporter with The Canadian Press.

Every weeknight for 30 straight years now, a Thunder Bay-raised musician named Paul Shaffer has performed for, bantered with, and provided a foil to legendary talk-show host David Letterman. That's Shaffer's job, and it's a good one -- but he's a Canadian treasure for more than his presence on American TV.
From his early years in Toronto as musical director of the legendary production of Godspell (with its infamous cast of future Sctv and SNLers) and subsequent stint with the original cast Saturday Night Live, to writing "It's Raining Men," recording with Yoko Ono, working on the '96 Olympics and that unprecedented partnership with Letterman, Shaffer has certainly had, as he tells Huffington Post, "the best seat in the house all these years."

Judging from the steady flow of acceptance speech tears, receiving a star on Canada's Walk of Fame is an emotional day for many Canadians. It was especially hard for Paul Hartmann, brother of the late Canadian actor-comedian Phil Hartman.
On Saturday afternoon, Paul was accepting the national honour on behalf of Phil (who dropped the extra "n" for his stage name). During a ceremony held at Toronto's Ed Mirvish Theatre, the beloved Ontario-born comedian and former "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons" star was presented with the Cineplex Legends Award, a posthumous honour that in previous years has gone to other notable Canadian luminaries such as Mordecai Richler and Raymond Burr.
Part of a four-day festival, the annual Walk of Fame inductions honour Canadian achievement in a variety of fields, in a star-studded celebration of the country's best and brightest. And this year, Hartman -- who died tragically in 1998 --...

7 songwriters, 22 tunes set for Canadian hall
TORONTO -- The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame on Tuesday named veteran musicians Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings and Canada's national anthem, O Canada, as among its latest inductees. In all, 22 songs and seven songwriters are to be welcomed into the Canadian songwriters pantheon during a Feb. 8 salute. They include two Winnipeg-born members of The Guess Who, Bachman and Cummings, whose song credits include Let It Ride and American Woman. Other pioneer songwriter inductees include Shelton Brooks, a ragtime piano player who wrote jazz standards like Some of These Days in 1910, and two Al Jolson hits, You Ain't Talkin' to Me and Honey Gal. Also to be inducted are Quebec songwriters Claude Leveillee, whose lyrics have been sung by Edith Piaf, Julie Arel and Andre Gagnon, and singer-songwriter Raymond Levesque, best known for his 1956 hit "Quand les hommes vivront d'amour."...
