At some point during the filming of Bulldozer, law enforcement got word that the half-hour comedy pilot was filming without proper permits.
“They started trying to bust down the door,” recalls director Andrew Leeds of officers showing up to their shoot in the Valley, demanding the production clear out.
It was a potentially disastrous moment, given that Bulldozer was self-financed (no studio lawyers to intervene), and was largely made by calling in favors to people like Mary Steenburgen, who plays the mother to creator/star Joanna Leeds’ character. Producers held the door shut so they could finish filming, and tried to shield Steenburgen from the chaos, not wanting the show’s biggest name to feel she was on a production that didn’t have its shit together.

Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie has an important reason for being darker than the original television series. In addition to being a procedural television show, Monk was both a comedy and a drama. The premise of a man with debilitating phobias who could never solve his wife's murder is inherently tragic. At the same time, these phobias lead to many comedic scenarios and interactions throughout Monk's best episodes, including the germaphobia and fear of flying that Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) has.
There is a deeply emotional undercurrent to Monk's story, especially when the mystery of what happened to Monk's wife, Trudy (Melora Hardin) comes to the forefront, but there is a lightness to the overall series as well. Even many of Monk's most heartbreaking episodes find ways to incorporate humor. Beyond Monk, other characters like Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford) and Monk's rival,...

Monk, an early-2000s police procedural dramedy, brought viewers eight beloved seasons of mysteries, tears, laughs, and quirky antics. The show follows the life of former detective Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), a brilliant San Francisco police consultant who lives with obsessive-compulsive disorder and is struggling to cope with his day-to-day life after his wife Trudy Monk is killed.
It is no surprise that the Monk series is pure comedic genius given the creator (Andy Breckman)’s years of experience as a Saturday Night Live sketch writer. Ted Levine, Jason Gray-Stanford, Bitty Schram, and Traylor Howard make up the supporting cast of this iconic comedy crime drama, and the show takes a beautifully compassionate approach to Adrian’s Ocd without sacrificing the ability to recognize Adrian's frequently humorous nature. Some of the best Monk episodes stem from Mr. Monk’s endearing mannerisms.

Space was held by Cynthia Erivo while accepting Out’s Out100 Icon Award on Wednesday night in Los Angeles. The “Wicked” star paid homage to her and Ariana Grande’s viral “holding space” interview with the magazine’s Tracy E. Gilchrist.
“According to queer media, I have been all over your social media,” Erivo said to the crowd, adding, “I don’t want you to grow too tired of me. There’s a [‘Wicked’] part two on the way, and we really need to hold space for that and feel the power in that.”
Before leaving the stage, as her “Defying Gravity” from the “Wicked” soundtrack boomed through the speakers, Erivo grabbed the mic and sang along for a snippet. You can watch that here.
Erivo then reunited with Gilchrist to watch drag queen Pattie Gonia’s lip sync performance of – what else? – “Defying Gravity.”

[This story contains major spoilers from the series finale of Somebody Somewhere.]
The final episode of Somebody Somewhere goes out on a literal high note. As the HBO comedy’s supporting cast (Jeff Hiller, Mary Catherine Garrison, Murray Hill, Tim Bagley) looks on, Bridget Everett’s Sam offers a toast and performs a stirring rendition of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb.” It’s a fitting end for a series whose greatest strength was often its ability to be sentimental without being saccharine, and it’s easy to view the scene as a symbolic farewell for its stars. “We didn’t know that would be the series finale, but we really have been writing like any moment could be the last moment of the show,” says co-creator Hannah Bos. “We also shot that during our first week of production on this season due to cast availability, so we really were just like, ‘I hope this works.'”

“Somebody Somewhere” sang its final song, and Bridget Everett said the uplifting performance made for the HBO comedy’s perfect unplanned ending.
After three seasons of laughter, music and big emotional lows, the critically-acclaimed series from Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen ended its run with Everett’s Sam inviting her friends and loved ones to a celebration at her bar, where she sang a tearjerking rendition of “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus.
The song also served as the perfect bow to tie up a standout seven-episode season of “Somebody Somewhere,” which followed as Sam, a grief-stricken but lovable resident of Manhattan, Kansas, made huge strides to grow her confidence — and even found a romantic connection in her family farm’s tenant Iceland (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson).

“Somebody Somewhere” finds the laughs in life’s most vulnerable and authentic moments, which makes this week’s fender bender accident a prime example of the show’s excellence.
The HBO comedy series is one episode away from its series finale, with plenty of characters showing significant growth before we say farewell. For Joel (Jeff Hiller), Episode 6 gave him the wake-up call he needed to stand up for himself in his relationship — after a hilariously tragic car accident.
“As Much as I Like Not Feeling” began with Joel getting into an accident with an older lady. As he intently listened to a podcast about “doing hard things,” Joel realized he missed his turn. He hit the brakes and set to reverse, but failed to look before he started going and hit the woman’s car behind him. When he got out of the car,...

Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie acknowledged one of the show’s most important characters despite not bringing them back for the reunion. With only 90 minutes to revisit Adrian and the rest of the Monk cast, Mr. Monk’s Last Case could only reference so many supporting characters. Even Bitty Schram’s Sharona, who left the show during season 3 but remained an important part of the story offscreen, was left out of the movie apart from the flashback at the start.
Set almost 15 years after the end of Monk, Mr. Monk’s Last Case saw Adrian trying to prove that what happened to Molly’s fiancé was not an accident. While the Monk movie did not have time for a lot of cameos and focused on the “last case,” it did acknowledge some of the most important parts of the original series, even through throwaway lines and Easter eggs.

A veteran actor recalls losing out on the role of playing Phoebe's love interest on Friends. The iconic sitcom is one of the relatively few series which, because of its enduring popularity, means that even the smallest and most minor guests can still be recognized for their performances decades later. That is doubly true for someone who was cast to play a recurring love interest to one of the main Friends characters.
Speaking with The A.V. Club, in conjunction with his current role on the HBO comedy series Somebody Somewhere, Tim Bagley reflects on his career and recalls losing out on the opportunity to recur opposite Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe's love interest. Bagley mentions that he was set to play a health inspector before, as he says, he got fired. Times they are a-changin’ for the Somebody Somewhere crew, and Sam worries she’ll soon be short one very best friend. No more nightly tuck-ins? No more dinky dinkies? Say it ain’t so!

Yes, the new-ish couple moved in together, and even though his life is changing, Joel promised Sam they’d still talk on the regular.

As Somebody Somewhere completes its third and final season on HBO, Bridget Everett is ready to reveal how her gem of a comedy comes up with stories about life in a small Kansas town.
“Plot isn’t central to our show,” the actress admitted Friday at Deadline’s Inaugural TV Sidebar, which launched this year as part of the Scad Film Festival in Savannah, Ga. “I think that’s what makes it unique. It’s just our taste, I guess. We’re more interested in the way the characters interact with each other. In season one, we tried to do a little more plotting. But every time, it didn’t feel organic to the show. So it’s really more about putting people in situations and how they can grow off of each other.”
Launched in 2022, the series follows Sam (Everett), a true Kansan who struggles with loss and acceptance in her midwestern hometown.

We’re in an era of entertainment maximalism. Superheroes with larger-than-life powers; cinematic universes with a dozen franchises or more; huge swings with even the unlikeliest IP: all are inescapable. So it’s nearly a miracle that Somebody Somewhere, which seems like an experiment in how small a story can be and still enthrall its audience, has lasted this long. With its third and final season, it ends as it began: portraying the vital necessity of true friendship, especially later in life.
In the first season, Sam (Bridget Everett) has relatively recently returned from New York City to her hometown of Manhattan, Kansas, for her sister Holly’s last days. As the series begins, Holly has died of cancer, and Sam is just trying to maintain baseline functionality. In Season 1 of HBO’s Peabody Award-winning dramedy “Somebody Somewhere,” Sam Miller (Bridget Everett) worked through her grief and anger in the months following her older sister Holly’s death. In Season 2, she struggled to find her place in her hometown again while managing her first big blowup with her best friend Joel (Jeff Hiller) and grappling with a secret Holly had kept from her. Now, in the third season of this outstanding series, Sam finally settles into her tiny community and tries to navigate change without retreating into old habits of isolation and self-loathing. Just as magical as ever, the final season of “Somebody Somewhere” is a stunningly honest depiction of friendship, grace and courage.

“You are a woman who is in charge of her life. But you have to manifest it. You have to say it out loud otherwise it won’t happen,” Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) lectures. Later, she gives some kinder advice, assuring her sister that “nobody knows what they’re doing, I promise. You just do it.

The 2000s were decades filled with some truly funny comedy movies, but plenty of hilarious releases have been mostly forgotten by modern audiences. Although this was the decade where Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, and Ben Stiller achieved major success at the box office and Judd Apatows unique brand of comedy took over, there were some movies that came and went without leaving a lasting impact. However, this did not make them any less effective, and many of these forgotten comedies deserve to be revisited.
The best comedies of the 2000s were often crude and raunchy with plenty of over-the-top energy, although some of the most underrated and forgotten movies from this era were far subtler and valued sentimental more. Other comedies from shortly after the dawn of the millennium lacked the originality needed to make a lasting impact and were consumed and quickly forgotten by viewers. Whatever the reason, these...

Somebody Somewhere is bowing out.
The critically acclaimed, Peabody Award-winning HBO dramedy will end with its forthcoming third season. The final run is set to premiere Oct. 27.
HBO picked up a third season of the series in June 2023. It began filming soon after the end of last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike (scripts had been completed prior to the writers strike), making it one of the first productions to get running again after writers and actors secured new contracts.
Created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen and starring Bridget Everett (who’s also a writer and executive producer), Somebody Somewhere centers on Sam (Everett), who moves back to her Kansas hometown and eventually finds her people in a community of outsiders “who don’t fit in but don’t give up,” as the show’s logline puts it.

The Groundlings will host an improv musical fundraising event on Oct. 26, featuring Ana Gasteyer, Kristen Bell, Kristen Wiig and Will Forte. The event, held at the Performing Arts Center at Vista Del Mar, will benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund to support below-the-line workers impacted by the strikes.
“One Night Only,” created and directed by Groundlings Main Company member Andrew Leeds, is a full production of a well-known Broadway musical. The catch? The improvisers are given the script and their roles only 24 hours in advance.
“These strikes have taken a terrible toll on our amazing crews, and it isn’t over yet. Even with the WGA strike ending, most crew members won’t be able to start work again until the SAG-AFTRA deal is ratified,” Leeds said in a statement. “Even then, many will be fighting to survive as they wait for productions to start back up.

HBO has renewed the critically acclaimed comedy series Somebody Somewhere for a third season.
Created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, Somebody Somewhere is inspired by the life of comedian and singer Bridget Everett and is set in her native Kansas.
