There are people who’ll tell you that Japanese folklore fantasy Monkey airing at 6pm on Friday nights in the 1980s was the highpoint of post-school, pre-bedtime TV scheduling in the UK. Let’s not tell them that they’re wrong; let’s just pity them for having mistimed their childhood by a decade.
The 1990s were the real peak of the 6pm weeknight TV slot. As long as there was no Wimbledon, snooker, cricket, athletics or Horse of the Year Show, that’s where anyone too young to go to the pub found joy. While grown-ups were watching the Six O’Clock News, kids in households flush enough to have a second television switched on BBC Two or Channel 4. There, to quote Howard Carter upon breaking into Tutankhamun’s tomb, they found wonderful things.

After the success of the Parks and Recreation special on April 30, NBC announced that there would be an hour-long 30 Rock special airing on July 16 at 8 p.m. Yes, all your favorites - including Tina Fey (Liz Lemon), Alec Baldwin (Jack Donaghy), Tracy Morgan (Tracy Jordan), Jane Krakowski (Jenna Maroney), Jack McBrayer (Kenneth Parcell), and maybe a few more - will be returning because, as Kenneth the Page would put it, "there are only two things [they] love in this world, television and everyone."
Unlike the Parks and Recreation special, which focused solely on the cast of the show, the 30 Rock special will also include stars from other NBCUniversal shows, which means we're in for one hell of a crossover episode. A special centered on bringing "together video, advertising, and humor" is right up 30 Rock's alley as the series has always been known...

Fox News host Laura Ingraham is questioning the media’s focus on the royal baby’s race.
The Ingraham Angle host did a “Seen and Unseen” segment earlier this week about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s newborn son.
Ingraham introduced the segment as a look at “the media’s race obsession with the royal baby.”
Fox contributor Raymond Arroyo started the conversation by discussing the baby’s name, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
“I love it,” Ingraham said about the name Meghan Markle and Prince Harry chose for their first child.
Arroyo then criticized CNN and the Los Angeles Times for their coverage of the infant, whose mom, former Suits actress Markle is biracial.
“Amazingly, CNN and the L.A. Times are so race obsessed, they couldn’t celebrate the child’s birth without headlines like this,” he said.

The BBC fired longtime presenter and DJ Danny Baker on Thursday over a racially-suggestive tweet about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s newborn baby.
The now-deleted tweet showed a photo of a couple holding hands with a chimpanzee dressed in clothes with the caption: “Royal Baby leaves hospital.”
“This was a serious error of judgement,” a BBC statement said in response, adding that it “goes against the values we as a station aim to embody. Danny’s a brilliant broadcaster but will no longer be presenting a weekly show with us.”

The former 5 Live presenter initially apologized for the joke, saying: “Sincere apologies for the stupid unthinking gag pic earlier. Was supposed to be joke about Royals vs circus animals in posh clothes but interpreted as about monkeys & race, so rightly deleted. Royal watching not my forte.

British radio host Danny Baker has been fired by the BBC as a result of what he called a “stupid unthinking gag” about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s newborn baby.
Baker, who hosts a radio show on the BBC’s Radio Five Live, tweeted a picture of a monkey holding hands with a couple with the words ‘Royal Baby leaves hospital.’ Baker has over half a million followers on Twitter.
However, Baker, who has been a regular fixture on TV and radio in the UK since the 1980s, denied that the tweet was racist and called it an “enormous mistake.” He called the BBC’s decision to fire him a “masterclass of pompous faux-gravity” and said that he had been “thrown under the bus” by the British public broadcaster.

British presenter Danny Baker has been sacked by the BBC after posting a picture of a couple holding hands with a chimpanzee and the words “Royal Baby leaves hospital.”
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry – the duke and duchess of Sussex – showed off their newborn son to the media for the first time Wednesday. The baby, whom they have named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, is seventh in line to the throne. Markle is biracial, and her mother, Doria Ragland, who was shown in some of the photos released by the family, is African-American.
Baker denied that his tweet, which he has deleted, was racist, and apologized for what he said was a misinterpreted joke about “Royals vs circus animals in posh clothes.”
He was promptly fired by the BBC on Thursday. Baker has a show on BBC radio and has made numerous TV appearance over the years on TV in Britain, where he is a household name.

They’re a funny old thing, gameshows. Some take the nation by storm, others you wouldn’t watch if you were paid to, with the rest fitting somewhere in between. Those that fall into the first category are ripe for resurrection and slotted back into schedules as if they’d never been away, with varying degrees of success – Channel 4’s recent resurgence of The Crystal Maze has been one of the greatest comebacks in TV history. Yet when it emerged last month that The Weakest Link, complete with Anne Robinson, could be making a return to our screens after a five-year absence, opinion was divided somewhat: do we really want people going round mimicking that God-awful catchphrase all over again? Whilst you’re busy pondering, here are five game shows that, for different reasons should remain exclusive to Challenge TV.

Danny Baker's autobiographical sitcom Cradle to Grave looks set to return for a second series.
Though the BBC is yet to make an official announcement, outgoing director of television Danny Cohen may have let the news slip on Twitter.
Thanks Danny. With Series Two commissioned all is well. Thank you for working with us on it! https://t.co/0RzCiEmKmz
— Danny Cohen (@DannyCohen) October 13, 2015
When Baker quipped that Cohen's "work is done" after commissioning his sitcom, he responded: "With Series Two commissioned all is well."
Speaking to Digital Spy, a BBC spokesperson said: "We're having active conversations about a further series of Cradle to Grave. It's too early to confirm any details."
Based on Baker's memoirs, Cradle to Grave stars Laurie Kynaston as a young Danny, with Peter Kay adopting a cockney accent to play the boy's father Fred.
The 8-part first series wraps with a double-bill on October 15 on BBC Two.

You might know him best as oddball Angelos Epithemiou, but actor Dan Skinner has admitted he was keen to take a break from his alter-ego.
The 42-year-old comic told Digital Spy that he is working on a new Angelos live show - the first time he'll have played the character since 2013.
"I haven't left him behind," he insisted. "But I needed to take a break from it for a little, because otherwise I'd have just been doing that.
"People will always go, 'Do some more, do some more' - but I never ever wanted to do just one thing."
Skinner appeared as Angelos on the live circuit for seven years, before playing the character on BBC Two's anarchic quiz Shooting Stars from 2009 to 2011.
"Then there was another five years after Shooting Stars of doing it on television, going on tour and all the rest of it. By the end of that cycle,...

BBC Two launched a new comedy double-bill tonight, with Danny Baker's '70s-set Cradle To Grave giving way to the thoroughly modern Boy Meets Girl.
Written by Simon Carlyle, Elliot Kerrigan and Andrew Mettam, Boy Meets Girl is the first British sitcom to feature a transgender character - played by a transgender actor - in the lead.
The six-part series charts the romance between Judy (Rebecca Root) and Leo (Harry Hepple) - and the difficulties they come up against as others come to terms with their relationship.
Kristian Smith - BBC Commissioning Editor - described the show as a "heart-warming romantic comedy" that also promotes "affirming messages of humanity and acceptance."
Digital Spy wants to know what you thought of Boy Meets Girl - was the show a breath of fresh air? Did you fall head over heels for Judy and Leo?

Surprised by Peter Kay's 'Gor blimey!' Cockney accent in BBC Two's Cradle to Grave? Series creator Danny Baker says you'll get used to it.
Speaking at a press screening, Baker said that "authenticity" isn't all that important in terms of how a TV character speaks.
"It's a shock when Peter Kay don't talk like Peter Kay - and it takes a bit to get over that," he acknowledged.
"But after a while, hopefully, he's that character - that's who he is, that's how he walks, that how he talks."
Cradle to Grave is based on Baker's youth, with Kay playing the young Danny's hot-tempered father Fred.
"I grew up with Harry Corbett in Steptoe and Son, what part of London was that?" Baker asked. "James Bolam in The Likely Lads - that ain't Geordie! But that's how that character speaks."

You couldn't get much more '90s than Tfi Friday. Even if you watched an episode of Friends while wearing a fisherman's hat with Shed Seven playing 'Chasing Rainbows' at the same time in your living room, it still wouldn't be as '90s as Chris Evans stood at a bar, shouting "Wiiiiiilll" in between bursts of 'The Riverboat Song'.
So when Chris Evans revealed over the Bank Holiday that Channel 4 had approached him to revive the show to mark its 20th anniversary next year (it isn't actually 20 until 2016, but let's not quibble over small details), there were understandably a few groans from people who thought the rowdy entertainment show should be left in the decade of Cool Britannia, Hooch and Kula Shaker.
But we disagree, for the five following reasons:
1. Tfi was live. Tfi was unpredictable.
Well, it was normally live. It was until Shaun Ryder...

It's game show heaven on television right now. Not only do we have all sorts of new formats making their way to screen, but some old favourites are getting a second lease of life, too - from Fifteen to One (airing daily on Channel 4) to the second series of the revived Catchphrase (Sundays on ITV.) But it got us thinking - what other game shows would we like to see return to our living rooms?
Well, we asked that very question to Fifteen to One's Sandi Toksvig and Catchphrase's Stephen Mulhern - and then had a bit of office debate about our own favourites...
You Bet! - Stephen Mulhern (Host, Catchphrase)
"This is an easy question: You Bet! It was one of my favourite TV shows and Matthew Kelly was one of my favourite presenters. I love it.
"I can give you some great examples that still amaze me to this day.

Things I find more grating than country music. The One Show. The music of Michael Buble. Louis Walsh. And that's probably about it. To be brutally honest, I haven't been much looking forward to Nashville, a new critically-hyped Us drama which centres around the world or rhinestones, Stetsons and boot-tapping darn' tootin' tunes.
However, if you're like me and you'd rather have a shave with a cheese grater than listen to an album of 'I miss my man' jaunty ditties, don't rule out this latest slice of soapy drama. There's plenty working in its favour and *whisper it* even the music wasn't that bad.
I'd watch nearly anything with Connie 'y'all' Britton in it and the Friday Night Lights alum was the main hook for me as ageing country singer Rayna Jaymes. Even when navigating some of the pilot episode's worst lines and clichés, she brought some likeability to the...

We’ve put a spotlight on some of the UK Christmas telly specials you won’t want to miss this festive season…
You know that pub conversation we’ve all had, the one about what you’d show an alien race on the brink of wiping out planet Earth to convince them we are essentially a well-meaning, productive, and often beautiful species that deserves to live? No contest: a Christmas issue of the Radio Times.
In 1969, an astronaut walked on the moon and someone thought up the Christmas Radio Times, both of them landmarks of brilliant stuff achieved by humans. They must have been thinner then - not astronauts, copies of the Radio Times - back when there were fewer TV channels than there are now Shrek films.
Between the covers of that hefty double edition sits the industry and imagination of generations. It...

Yes it was only a matter of time before a quintessentially English property sought out a quintessential Englishman, and that vacancy now seems to have been filled by Twitter addict and Qi Quiz-master, Stephen Fry. The actor and presenter, who last appeared on the big screen voicing the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland, has been cast in the role of Sherlock Holmes‘ older brother in Sherlock Holmes 2.
Speaking to Danny Baker on BBC Radio 5 Live this past Saturday, Fry seemed thrilled to bits to be featuring alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in Guy Ritchie’s sequel:
I’m playing Mycroft in the sequel to the Sherlock Holmes film Guy Ritchie directed with Robert Downey Jr., and that sort of part is fun, but just once in a while to play a genuine all round sort of lead figure with complexity and tragedy and wit and all...
