Samuel Barclay was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Born to parents George Barclay and Henrietta Black Sommerville and brother to Georgina Barclay and Elizabeth Bell Barclay. He was the husband to Betty Georgina Barclay and loving father to Sarah Georgina Barclay. He started his career with the BBC in July 1941 at the age of 14 as an Office Boy. After working is way up becoming a Clerk, he applied internally to be trained as a Technician; as a Camera Man then to a Lighting Camera Man and finally to a Lighting Director.
