- Pina Bausch was born on July 27, 1940 in Solingen, Germany. She was a director and actress, known for Talk to Her (2002), Cafe Müller (1985) and Die Klage der Kaiserin (1990). She died on June 30, 2009 in Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
- German dancer, choreographer, and director.
- She and her company were nominated for the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 2000 (1999 season) for the conception of Viktor at the Sadler's Wells Theatre.
- Had a son, Salomon Bausch, with her companion since 1981, Ronald Kay.
- She was influenced by Kurt Jooss, an icon of German expressionist dance with whom she studied. She was also influenced by the ballets of Antony Tudor whom she met at Juilliard.
- Early in her career, she became known for having her company dance on dirt, leaves, or in ankle-deep water.
- When I first began choreographing, I never thought of it as choreography but as expressing feelings. Though every piece is different, they are all trying to get at certain things that are difficult to put into words. In the work, everything belongs to everything else - the music, the set, the movement and whatever is said. I don't know where one thing stops and another begins, and I don't need to analyze it. It would limit the work if I were too analytical. [N.Y. Times, Sept. 29, 1985]
- I'm not interested in how people move, but what moves them.
