Despite her Alzheimer's in 2001 Mills arranged for their wedding vows to be renewed at a family ceremony in their local church at Denham.

Due to the advanced stage of her illness, she was unable to attend the funeral of her husband of 64 years, Sir John, on 27 April 2005.

In the later years of her life, she suffered from Alzheimer's disease.
