- Bharathan was born on November 14, 1947 in Vadakkancheri, Trichur, Kerala, British India. He was a director and art director, known for Thevar Magan (1992), Prayanam (1975) and Thakara (1979). He was married to K.P.A.C. Lalitha. He died on July 29, 1998 in Madras, Tamil Nadu, India.

- Nephew of famous director P.N. Menon, who was also Bharathan's inspiration to enter the world of cinema.
- Noted south Indian film director, having directed over 50 Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu films. His films have been especially noted for their artistic quality, and admirers of his inimitable style refer to his directorial seal as the 'Bharathan touch'.
- Son, Siddharth, with actress wife K.P.A.C. Lalitha, is also a part of the Malayalam film industry: he is an actor.
- Won the Kerala State Award for Best Art Director in 1975, 1979-1982, and 1984. He won an award for Second Best Film for Chamaram (1980) and for Ormakkayi (1982), for which he also received the Best Director Award. He won the award for Best Film for Marmaram (1983), and directed the films _Oru Minnaminuginte Nurungu Vettam (1987)_ and Venkalam (1993), which were awarded the Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value.
- Friends and admirers bade a tearful farewell to Bharathan when his embalmed body was taken to his hometown Vadakkanchery, Thrissur, for cremation.
