Save for a 1992 guest spot on the Og Quantum Leap and voicing herself in a 1993 episode of The Simpsons, Brooke Shields — best known at the time for the ’80s films The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love, plus Calvin Klein ads — had yet to break out on television through the mid-1990s.

It’s Musicals Week at IndieWire. With “Wicked” about to sparkle over theaters, we’re celebrating the best of the movie-musical genre.
With all due respect to my colleagues, I feel crazy talking about movie musicals at work.
Every year since I’ve been a full time entertainment reporter, Disney has released an underwhelming live-action version of one of its delightful animated musicals. I witnessed the hype and joy surrounding Jon M. Chu’s “In the Heights” and tepid reception for Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” and continue to live in uncertainty about whether or not there will be a third “Mamma Mia!” film (please!). These days, it seems like every movie musical is anticipated with more than a healthy dose of fear, in case it struggles to recapture the magic of on-screen song-and-dance that was once so easy for this industry.
The reason I feel crazy is that...

Officers of the judicial system with a soft spot for our favorite superheroes will always hold a special place in our hearts. Two names that fall into this category are The Flash’s Joe West and Arrow’s Quentin Lance. Both officers stuck their necks out for Barry Allen (The Flash) and Oliver Queen (Green Arrow), two vigilantes in the Arrowverse, and helped them in their quests to bring justice to the world.
Jesse L. Martin as Joe West in The Flash | Credits: The CW
Unfortunately, getting tangled up in the twisted and morally grey world of vigilantes did not work out the same way for both characters. While Joe West was let off the hook, Quentin Lance faced a harsh punishment – a demotion despite having climbed the ranks to become the Captain of the Star City Police Department. Why the discrimination? Well, the answer is pretty simple, actually.

Procedural TV shows that delve into the paranormal offer a unique blend of mystery, comedy, and drama. Angel, Grimm, and Supernatural successfully intertwine supernatural elements with procedural crime-solving. Shows like Penny Dreadful, Twin Peaks, and Fringe have unique and captivating storylines that set them apart.
Procedural TV shows are widely popular, but procedural shows that deal with the paranormal add a whole extra layer that makes them even more unique and interesting. Procedural TV shows typically have a set formula which each episode tends to follow, and they may or may not have a loose story that runs underneath. With this format, it allows a series to be enjoyed by audiences who can drop in on any episode and still enjoy what's happening, although watching the series as a whole will likely add context and enhance the experience.

After an episode such as this, it's a severe disappointment that this is likely the first of the final ten episodes of Magnum P.I.
Most characters got their time in the sun on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 11.
And it set up things splendidly for the final stretch, should that indeed be the case.
That begins with Thomas and Juliet. After all, they've been an intriguing couple during the first half of Magnum P.I. Season 5, ever since they stopped fighting their feelings for each other.
It was simple to tell something was amiss with Higgins when she was the one who showed up late for a client meeting. Usually, it's Thomas who gets distracted along the way.
Magnum got suspicious because this was out of character for her, and she was incredibly secretive. Juliet always has played things close to the vest. It's the ex-spy in her. But this was next-level caginess.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 11 “Hit and Run.”] Heading into the second half of Magnum P.I.‘s final season, fans have a couple important questions: Is the show really going to end? And could there be a baby in Higgins (Perdita Weeks) and Magnum’s (Jay Hernandez) future? The midseason premiere answers the second. As the promos have shown, Higgins is late to join Magnum for a client meeting — and, also, late, as she stresses after trying to be vague. “It’s probably a false alarm, but over-the-counter pregnancy tests just aren’t reliable, so I’m going to pop by my physician’s to get a blood test,” she explains. Magnum stumbles over his answer — “That’s great, great that you’re getting tested, not great that you’re not pregnant not that being pregnant wouldn’t be great.” — and fortunately for him, the case interrupts. In the finale of the 2012 television series The River, a character says what everyone else is thinking: “It’s never gonna let us go.” This foreboding last line is, of course, in reference to the show’s sinuous and uncanny namesake. From there the audience is left to wonder what happened to the crew of the Magus as they drifted toward imminent danger.
This wasn’t the first time a TV show visited the Amazon; a short-lived 1999 drama created by author Peter Benchley beat Oren Peli and Michael R. Perry’s series to the punch. However, The River was a mix of adventure and horror. In place of a plane crashing and the survivors struggling to survive their dilemma are characters who deliberately enter the unknown. Snoop Dogg, Jennifer Hudson and Will.i.am joined the cast of Exodus Film Group’s animated feature “Pierre the Pigeon-Hawk.”
Directed by John D. Eraklis, the New York City-set animated comedy follows Pierre (Will.i.am) who was born out of forbidden love between a hawk (Whoopi Goldberg) and a pigeon (Howie Mandel). Rejected by both communities, he sets out on an adventure to find himself and makes some new friends along the way. His journey of self-discovery propels Pierre to promote the need for diversity, inclusion and community.
Pierre’s new friends include Ophelia, an Owl played by Hudson whose genius is outweighed by her madness. She’s part of a band of unlikely friends who have recently escaped from the Central Park Zoo. Also in the group are a pair of rag tag city squirrels: Scratch (Snoop Dogg) and Sniff (Keenan Thompson).

One of Arrow’s most prominent characters that lasted a majority of the series was Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne), father of Laurel (Katie Cassidy) and Sara (Caity Lotz) as well as a member of Team Arrow. While he began as someone who was against what the Arrow (Stephen Amell) was doing to eventually trying to take him down, Quentin would eventually find his place within the series as a permanent ally once he knew about the real identities of the vigilantes he was trying to take down. While he was primarily Laurel and Sara’s father, he was pretty much the dad of the series in so many ways. Being the more experienced and wiser member of the team, Quentin always helped ground the heroes when they needed it the most.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the “Arrow” series finale.
In the aftermath of Oliver Queen’s (Stephen Amell) death, the CW’s “Arrow” ended with a relatively happy ending.
The post-“Crisis” world revealed that Oliver’s death had indeed been a spark that saved his city, which was now crime-free. Additionally, nearly everyone whom Oliver lost over the years — including his mother Moira (Susanna Thompson), best friend Tommy (Colin Donnell), and foe-turned-friend Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne) — was revived. An exception to the rule was Oliver’s father, Robert (Jamey Sheridan), about whom the Queen family speculated that only things that didn’t change the titular hero could be undone.
Undoing, to a degree, past key emotional moments was a delicate line to toe, the “Arrow” team admits.

The end has come for Arrow. After eight seasons, the CW drama ended tonight and if you didn't cry a little, you might need to get your tear ducts checked. It was basically everything you could want if you've been watching the show for eight seasons now, starting with the comforting fact that the city finally did get saved. After Oliver died in Crisis on Infinite Earths and rebooted the universe, Star City returned as a crime-free place that no longer really needed a Team Arrow to protect it. The reboot also brought quite a few loved ones back to life, including Moira Queen (Susanna Thompson), Tommy Merlyn (Colin Donnell), Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne), and even Oliver's poor half-sister Emiko...

As the CW’s “Arrow” prepares to sign off after eight seasons, the writers had a difficult balance to strike in the final episode: acknowledging the changes that have come to Earth Prime in the aftermath of the timeline-changing “Crisis on Infinite Earths” arc, wrapping up the characters from the mothership series and also leaving enough of the characters unharmed that the future-set backdoor spinoff could potentially move forward.

Another episode of Arrow season 8, another welcome return of a familiar face. This time, Paul Blackthorne is returning as Quentin Lance. A regular on the series for the first six years of its run, the Star City cop ultimately sacrificed his own life for the Earth-2 doppelganger of his dead daughter when he took a bullet meant for Laurel. Now, however, he’s back as if he never died in the first place. And only Oliver Queen knows something is up.
As this preview teases, episode 8×06 “Reset” sees the Emerald Archer finding himself in a slightly different alternate reality in which Quentin managed to survive his gunshot wound and is still alive in 2019. No one else thinks this is odd though, which leads our hero to suspect that this is another one of the Monitor’s cosmic tests.

If any character could be described as being the Jim Gordon to Oliver Queen’s Batman, I’d say that honor went to Quentin Lance. During Arrow‘s earlier seasons, the two shared a rocky relationship as vigilante and policeman, yet were allies more often than not. Later on, Ollie gave Lance a job in the mayor’s office once the latter’s career as a cop took a dive, thereby showing us the good outweighed the bad in their storied history.
Okay, it wasn’t entirely like the Batman-Gordon dynamic, but you can probably see why I drew the parallel. That said, it came as a heartbreaking experience to all when Quentin died in the sixth season finale. Fortunately, we recently learned that actor Paul Blackthorne is coming back for another tour soon enough.
Before we get any further into this conversation though, let’s take a look at...

NBC is closing the loop on its new spring-summer 2019 scripted series by cancelling freshman drama The InBetween.
The news is not surprising. The InBetween, starring Harriet Dyer, did not debut until after the end of the 2018-19 broadcast season. It was the lowest-rated NBC summer 2019 series in Live+Same Day ratings, something for which delayed viewing bumps could not compensate.
The InBetween‘s core creative team already has moved on to another project. In a competitive situation with multiple networks bidding, CBS in September landed with penalty Queens, a police drama from The InBetween creator/executive producer Moira Kirland, executive producer Matt Gross and studio Universal TV, where Gross is under an overall deal.
The InBetween joins NBC’s new midseason 2019 series, comedy Abby’s and dramas The Village and The Enemy Within, which also were canceled after one season.
The InBetween centered on Cassie Bedford (Dyer), who was born with a rare ability.
