Sean S. Cunningham will always be primarily remembered for directing the original Friday the 13th, but he has taken the helm of some other movies that are worth checking out, like 1985’s The New Kids and the subject of the latest entry in our Black Sheep video series, DeepStar Six (get it Here).

Released in 1989 and often compared to its fellow ’89 release Leviathan (which has also gotten the Black Sheep treatment), DeepStar Six was scripted Geoff Miller and Lewis Abernathy – which is interesting because movies like Leviathan and DeepStar Six exist because James Cameron’s The Abyss was coming out the same year, and Abernathy and Cameron are pals. Since 2021, Giancarlo Esposito has held the distinction of being the most-recognized Black performer in the history of the Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy category. After coming up short on all of his past nominations for “Breaking Bad” (2012), “Better Call Saul” (2019-2020) and “The Mandalorian” (2021), he now has a shot at finally triumphing on his potential third “Better Call Saul” bid. This would not only finally make the six-season AMC drama an Emmy-winning show, but would also make Esposito his category’s first Black winner.

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.

Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

As Primetime Emmy anomalies go, the 1982 Best Drama Supporting Actor lineup stands out as one of the most noteworthy. For the first and only time in any category, every nominee was a cast member on the same program, namely the police procedural “Hill Street Blues.” The five contenders – Taurean Blaque, Michael Conrad, Charles Haid, Michael Warren, and Bruce Weitz – ranged in age from 36 to 56, with their characters varying in rank from officer to sergeant. Conrad, the eldest, was ultimately chosen as the victor for the second year in a row.

“Hill Street Blues” also achieved its second of four consecutive Best Drama Series victories in 1982, along with wins for Best Actor (Daniel J. Travanti) and Best Writing. “Elvis” director Baz Luhrmann and singer Doja Cat late on Thursday paid tribute to Shonka Dukureh, a performer and blues singer in the film who was found dead in her apartment on Thursday.

“A special light went out today and all of the Elvis movie family are heartbroken by the loss of Shonka Dukureh,” Luhrmann wrote on his Instagram. “From the moment she came into our world, Shonka brought joy, spirit and of course her voice and her music. Whenever she was on set, on stage or even just in the room, everyone always felt uplifted.”

“American Pickers” star Frank Fritz has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke.

Fritz’s former co-star Mike Wolfe announced the news on Instagram.

“I have been very private in the past year in regards to Franks [sic] life and the journey he’s been on,” Wolfe wrote. “There has been lots of opinions in regards to mine and Frank’s friendship and the show but now is not the time to set the record straight. Now is the time to pray for my friend.”

“Frank has suffered a stroke and is in the hospital. Please keep him in your hearts and thoughts,” Wolfe continued. “Frank I pray more than anything that you make it through this okay. I love you buddy.”

As TMZ reported, Fritz stepped away from the History channel show about a year ago to deal with health problems.

Taurean Blacque, best known for his role on the hit 1980s NBC drama “Hill Street Blues,” died Thursday at the age of 82, his son Rodney Middleton announced on Facebook.

In his post, Middleton shared photos of his father in character as Washington, with his trademark newsboy cap and toothpick-bearing grin. He wrote in the caption, “Thank you all for your prayers, calls and texts to me and my family. My father pass[ed] away today At 2:52 pm est.”

Blacque was one of the few regulars who stayed with the Steven Bochco and Michael Kozoll series for its entire run. In 1982, he earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. It was a landmark year for “Hill Street Blues,” which also saw nominations for Michael Conrad, Michael Warren, Bruce Weitz, Charles Haid in the supporting category, with Conrad taking homing the Emmy for his role as Sgt.

For all seven seasons of the popular NBC cop show, Blacque starred alongside Michael Warren, Daniel J. Travanti, Charles Haid, Michael Conrad and Bruce Weitz in “Hill Street Blues.” The show ran from 1981-1987 and garnered Blacque an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series in 1982. In fact, the category that year was owned by “Hill Street Blues,” which saw all five nominees coming from the show created by Steven Bochco and Michael Kozoll. The other four nominees were Warren, Haid, Conrad and Weitz.

Blacque’s character of Detective Neal Washington was a respected yet stern veteran cop known from his trademark toothpick and cap.

Taurean Blacque, who portrayed the streetwise Det. Neal Washington on all seven seasons of the acclaimed NBC cop show Hill Street Blues, died Thursday in Atlanta following a brief illness, his family announced. He was 82.

From 1989-90, Blacque played Henry Marshall opposite Vivica A. Fox and others as an original castmember on the NBC daytime soap opera Generations, the first serial to include — from the start — a Black family as part of the main storyline. His character owned ice cream parlors in Chicago.

In 1982, Blacque received a supporting actor Emmy nomination for his work as the toothpick-dependent Washington on Hill Street but lost out to co-star Michael Conrad. Amazingly, the other three nominees — Charles Haid, Michael Warren and Bruce Weitz — also came from the 1981-87 series, created by Steven Bochco and Michael Kozoll.

Emmy voters certainly didn’t spread the wealth around with the 2022 nominations. Five of the seven supporting actress in a limited series or TV movie went to HBO’s “The White Lotus.” Four of the six guest actor in a drama series noms were nabbed by HBO’s “Succession.” And HBO Max’s “Hacks” scored four of the six guest actress in a comedy series nominations.

But multiple nominations in one category isn’t anything new in the Emmy universe. In fact, Emmy history was made 40 years ago when NBC’s landmark police procedural drama “Hill Street Blues” earned all five nominations for supporting actor in a drama series. Michael Conrad won his second consecutive Emmy as Sgt. Phil Esterhaus, who would end the morning roll call meetings with “Let’s be careful out there.” Conrad faced competition from the series’ Taurean Blacque, Charles Haid, Michael Warren and Bruce Weitz.

It was a night of record-making firsts and honoring legends from Hollywood’s Golden Era. John Forsythe and Marlo Thomas hosted the 34th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1982 — before cable TV and streaming services took over and network TV still ruled the small screen. The thrills are kinder & gentler, with plenty of hair-raising stunts but less gunplay and gore. McQueen’s eccentric bounty hunter collects toys and can barely drive a car, but he always gets his man. Kathryn Harrold is good; Eli Wallach, LeVar Burton, Ben Johnson, Richard Venture and Tracey Walter are along for the ride (and stay out of Steve’s spotlight). Steve’s in charge — he tailors everything to highlight his quirky star characterization, and the guiding principle is ‘low key.’

This big, expensive and well-produced action-suspense Sci-fi epic mostly delivers on its promise to be Aliens at the bottom of the sea. At heart it’s a 1950s pulse-pounder with a bigger monster, a zillion times the budget and a script that does everything but make us care. We appreciate the likable characters but it’s too easy to predict who will ‘get it’ next. The realism factor is not bad at all, although the undersea explorer video training sessions should have given ‘how not to crack up under stress’ more emphasis. And can’t anybody properly mind those pesky nuclear bombs?

While it may not be Friday, there is still plenty to celebrate this Tuesday the 13th, as we prepare to head back to Camp Crystal Lake with Scream Factory’s impressive Friday the 13th Collection, which brings together all the films from the original franchise, as well as the remake and Freddy vs. Jason as well. Scream Factory also put together a Blu-ray release of one of the most seminal films from my childhood this week—Terror in the Aisles—and they even are giving Motel Hell the Steelbook treatment on Tuesday as well.

1939: Primetime radio soap opera Those We Love was canceled and taken off the air by NBC's Blue Network. It was the story of the Marshall family of Westbridge, Connecticut, and featured Universal starlet Nan Grey. It was canceled so abruptly the story was left in limbo which outraged fans.

"Modern Family" was greedy at last year's Emmy Awards, claiming half of the nominations in the Best Comedy Supporting Actor category for Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and eventual winner Eric Stonestreet. All three are eligible again, as is their co-star Ed O'Neill, who has never been nominated. If all four contend, it would be the most ever for one show in this category. "Cheers" held three slots in both 1985 (Nicolas Colosanto, John Ratzenberger, George Wendt) and 1988 (Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrelson, Wendt) but none of them prevailed. This was actually produced in 2008, but is only now getting a release on DVD, so it’s been sitting around for a couple of years for whatever reason. It was never released in theatres. It’s called The Stick Up Kids – a title that’s new to me. Has anyone laid eyes on it previously? I’m guessing it played at a festival or two.

The story goes… Four friends who grew up together on the streets of Harlem will do whatever it takes – from armed robberies to elaborate con games, to get what they want. But for how long? One slumlord is determined to take over the neighborhood, and he’s not about to let some kids get in his way. The crew’s only hope to survive? A scam that’s more twisted and dangerous than anything they’ve pulled off yet.

From the trailer below, it doesn’t look too shabby.
