2024 is nearly over and while we saw the release of many brilliant films that were also hit at the box office, many movies flew under the radar of people’s view. While some movies like Dune: Part Two and Inside Out 2 were extremely popular at the box office and amongst critics, other great movies like The Fall Guy and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga were not as lucky. So, we thought of compiling a list consisting of the best movies that were released in 2024 that you might not have seen yet.

Agent Smith is the best bad guy in The Matrix and one of the most iconic sci-fi movie villains ever, but he isn't always played by the same actor. Although Smith is in every Matrix movie, he gradually transforms as the series progresses. The character creates a common thread throughout the franchise and serves as the nemesis to Keanu Reeves' Thomas "Neo" Anderson and the other Matrix escapees. Not every actor who inherits the job adds something new to Agent Smith, as the man who originated the role did such a great job that he is often deemed worthy of imitation.
Agent Smith is a sentient computer program, otherwise known as a Program in The Matrix, but he eventually becomes a Virus. This category of characters is largely restricted to the digital world, but Smith goes far beyond being a traditional Program. Although Smith begins the saga as a loyal servant to the Matrix,...

From prophesied saviors to sentient computer programs, The Matrix is filled with interesting characters of various descriptions, but the sci-fi franchise wasted one of its best figures by confining them to the saga's worst entry. Certain characters feature only briefly in the Matrix but leave a lasting impact, whereas others make their mark by featuring heavily as main characters. The figure in question is an odd blend of those two categories, and their return in other The Matrix movies further down the line could have been incredibly rewarding.
The ending of the original Matrix trilogy brought the initial era of the beloved sci-fi franchise to its conclusion. Although it's not one of the most consistent movie trilogies of all time, it still manages to tell an epic post-apocalyptic tale about the resilience of the human spirit. The 2021 legacy sequel, The Matrix Resurrections, didn't do particularly well at the box office or with critics.

Earlier this year, the acclaimed horror movie Late Night with the Devil became a hit at the box office. After its subsequent release on Shudder, the film is now finding even more success upon being made available to stream on Hulu.
Per Screen Rant, Late Night with the Devil is currently ranked at No. 4 on Hulu's Top 15 Movies list. It's currently falling behind The Beast Within, Don't Turn Out the Lights, and Road Diary. However, it's sitting above the horror flick Smile, which now has a sequel that's playing in theaters. Finding a new audience on Hulu will become just the latest achievement for Late Night with the Devil.

Late Night With the Devil became one of the highest rated movies of the year when it debuted in March 2024, and now it has followed up success in cinemas and on Shudder by topping the Hulu chart. Horror movies often struggle to get a good reception from the majority of critics, but the David Dastmalchian-led supernatural offering managed to secure a near-perfect Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, which even surpassed its strong audience reactions.
Late Night with the Devil is set in 1977, and follows charismatic TV talk show host Jack Delroy (Dastmalchian), who finds all manner of disturbing events descending on his studio when an evil presence takes over one of his guests. What is first believed to be a hoax soon turns into a very real and terrifying ordeal for those in the studio and watching at home.

The controversy surrounding AI in filmmaking is increasing, leading to backlash from audiences who feel deceived by AI-generated content. As technology advances, the blurred line between AI-generated and human-created content raises ethical concerns in the film industry. Despite the convenience and cost-saving benefits AI offers, filmmakers are finding that audiences are not accepting of AI-generated elements in movies.
The leaps in technological resources in Hollywood are typically well-received. Industrial Light & Magic revolutionized the industry with their methods to accomplish state-of-the-art special effects. When visual effects were advanced enough, they even got a special category, which is still active at the Academy Awards. Technology isn't usually seen as a threat to auteurs and their craftsmanship, but there's still a place for discussion regarding films that feel like "too much filling but no substance." There's a limit, and when some films cross it, which has happened in 2024, the reception isn't very positive.

David Dastmalchian was raised in a religious household where “everything was ‘the Devil’s work’” and he was constantly told not to open myself up to anything evil that could come in. “Fast-forward to me as a grown-up and I’m telling my wife not to order a cursed Ouija board off the Internet,” the actor notes. He’s also hosted seances, been published in “Fangoria,” penned the graphic novel series “Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter” for Dark Horse Comics and served as the brand ambassador for a line of caskets.
And, of course, starred in the hottest horror movie of the year as the lead in “Late Night With the Devil.” The indie feature from brothers Cameron and Colin Cairns was released by IFC in theaters, where it’s already made a robust $10 million. And as of today, it’s available to stream on the horror network Shudder.

Late Night with the Devil has earned about $666K at the box office for Sunday, a number that's especially bizarre given the horror movie's plot.
An indie horror flick starring David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad), Late Night with the Devil arrived in theaters following high praise from Stephen King and a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score with its early reviews. For the weekend box office, the film landed in the No. 6 spot, but what's most peculiar is the total it pulled in on Sunday. Per Variety, Late Night with the Devil made $2.8 million for the weekend, with $666,666 of that earned on Sunday. It's a record-breaking haul for the film, which sets the new record as the best opening weekend for an IFC Films release, surpassing the $826.7K haul pulled in by Watcher in 2022.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Dan Baker on Wbgr-fm on March 22nd, 2024, reviewing “Shirley,” featuring Regina King as 1960s/70s Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. Streaming on Netflix since March 22nd.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Ms. King portrayed Congresswoman Chisholm as she launches an impossible dream of running for the Democratic nomination for president in 1972. Behind Ms. Chisholm was her husband Conrad (Michael Cherrie), her advisors Arthur Hardwick (Terrence Howard) and Mac Holder (Lance Reddick), as well as colleagues Congressman Walter Fauntroy (André Holland) and future politico and congresswoman, Barbara Lee (Christina Jackson). The result of her run are obviously known, but it’s the insider process that is the guts of this impossible dream.
”Late Night with the Devil” is in select theaters on March 22nd. See local listings. Featuring David Dastmalchian, Rhys Auteri, Ian Bliss, Laura Gordon and Ingrid Torelli. Co-written and directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes.

David Dastmalchian shines in a lead role, adding depth and charm to an eerie tale of a haunted TV variety show. The '70s aesthetic is nailed down flawlessly, with a twisty and emotional ending that leaves viewers questioning reality. The portrayal of psychic powers and cult-like rituals adds to the creepiness, anchored by engrossing performances.
There's something comforting in the fact that, despite living in an era where technology exists to make movies look as clean and slick as possible, one of the most popular and enduring subgenres in the horror pantheon is the found footage flick. There's just something about grainy, out of focus, and decidedly frenetic storytelling that pushes all the right buttons, both in terms of creepiness and nostalgia.

Review: I’ve always had a fondness for late-night talk shows and their host. While I’m more of a Letterman and Conan guy, the shadow of Carson looms largely over anyone in that space. So the concept of Late Night With The Devil immediately appeals to me. They would always have a slew of guests, ranging in their celebrity status, all with the purpose of popping a rating. But what if one of those guests were actually able to prove the existence of the supernatural? The possibilities are endless.

Being an avid fan of “old school” horror, I try to keep an open mind to the newer films, even the “sub-genres”. One of those is the “found footage” chiller that probably established itself with its biggest hit The Blair Witch Project. It opened the floodgates for jittery, shakey phony home video slightly “tweaked” via software trickery. The multiplexes are so bombarded that I almost dread a new one. Oh, but an Aussie filmmaking duo has come up with a new “twist’ that keys right into another bit of nostalgia: classic TV not from the “golden age’ of the 50s, but the often “schlocky” stuff of the 70s. Plus it’s not from daytime or prime time (8 to 11 Pm Est). I mean what kid 47 years ago wouldn’t try to sneak downstairs to the massive 19-inch console TV, sit close to the screen so you can keep the volume low...

Warning: The following article fully spoils the plot of “Late Night With the Devil.” Read on if you dare.
In “Late Night With the Devil,” David Dastmalchian plays ’70s late night host Jack Delroy, who tries to salvage his show’s falling ratings with a desperate stunt: Getting a possessed teenager to channel the devil on live TV.
In the found-footage movie, we see the doomed broadcast and “never before seen” behind-the-scenes shots as things begin to deteriorate onstage and off.
On Halloween night, he invites Lilly D’Abo (Ingrid Torelli), a girl who was rescued from a satanic cult, and her medium and handler June Ross-Mitchell (Laura Gordon), along with a psychic and a skeptic.

Late Night with the Devil is the most fun that I have had with a horror film in a hot minute. It really finds that space in the Venn diagram that encompasses popcorn horror, clever writing, and an innovative story. I love discovering movies like this. I would file Deadstream, The House of the Devil and Saint Maud on the same shelf. Not because they are similar in premise or tone, but more because of the experience I had watching them. It’s so fun to go into an indie horror film and discover something new. A story that hasn’t been told that isn’t part of a bigger franchise. I love higher budget, more mainstream horror, but it’s films like this that give us more of an opportunity to experience something unexpected. I love that.

The Cairnes defended their use of AI in Late Night With the Devil, explaining that the images were further edited before appearing on screen. Starring David Dastmalchian, the film adds a unique spin on the found footage horror genre with a 1970s talk show gone wrong. Despite early positive reviews, the film has faced backlash for its use of AI, sparking debates on technology's role in Hollywood.
The debate over the use of AI in Hollywood was a hot button issue among horror fans on X (formerly Twitter) recently after it was revealed that the new IFC Films movie Late Night With the Devil starring David Dastmalchian utilized artificial intelligence to create three still images seen in the production. Now, the directors of the movie, Cameron and Colin Cairnes, are setting the record straight with a statement issued to Variety that clarifies just how much AI was used, and how.

The Devil has always thrived in chaos, and so there’s no better or more natural place for him to appear than on live TV. That goes double for the live TV of the early ’70s, when an “anything goes” attitude ruled the airwaves, the horrors of the Vietnam War beamed into a hundred million American homes every night, and the devotional trust that people still placed in news anchors and talk show hosts was starting to grow poisoned by the cynical pursuit for higher ratings.
In that light, it was only going to be a matter of time before “Night Owls with Jack Delroy” turned into hell on earth, especially after Jack’s non-smoker of a wife died of terminal lung cancer and the widowed host became more determined than ever to catch up with Johnny Carson. Jack would make any sacrifice necessary to win his midnight time slot,...

By taking the tricks and tropes associated with films about occult goings-on and applies them in the context of a 1970s talk show, Australian writer-directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes have conjured up a horror flick that’s devilishly fun. Late Night with the Devil sets the scene with a montage, authoritatively narrated by Michael Ironside. Day after day, news programs report on the Watergate scandal, the Manson family, and other offenses as if on loop. Perhaps that’s why there’s such an appetite for the likes of Johnny Carson—well-groomed, quick-witted men who who almost nightly offer a sense of order and familiarity to an increasingly anxious populous, a feeling that maybe things will be alright after all.

Ahead of the acclaimed horror flick’s arrival later this month, check out the full-length trailer for Late Night With The Devil.
There are plenty of reasons why we’re fully on board for the upcoming horror flick, Late Night With The Devil.
It has a retro 1970s feel that looks incredible. It also has the wonderful David Dastmalchian (who often appears in smaller but memorable roles) getting a leading role. Then there’s the festival buzz which has been very strong indeed. Oh, and there’s also the fact that horror hasn’t really found its feet yet here in 2024.
Whilst it wasn’t terrible, Night Swim didn’t have anywhere near the same impact that Blumhouse’s traditional year-opening horror has in the past, and we feel like we’re waiting for the first truly rousing chiller of the year to get the cinematic scares up and running.

A film that is truly transfixing from its very first frame to the moment its eerie end credits roll, Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes' Late Night with the Devil was one of my favorite screenings at last year's Overlook Film Festival. Taking place during a late-night talk show one fateful (and frightful) Halloween in 1977, Late Night with the Devil features a powerfully poignant performance by the always-great David Dastmalchian, and ahead of the film's theatrical release on March 22nd via IFC Films and its April 19th streaming release on Shudder, we have a look at the movie's chilling trailer and fiery poster that warns you to "not adjust your set."

"How could you let it happen, Jack?" IFC Films has revealed the full official trailer for acclaimed indie horror thriller Late Night with the Devil, made by the Australian filmmakers Cameron & Colin Cairnes. This first premiered at last year's SXSW Film Festival, playing at tons of other festivals around the world. Tune in this spring. A live television broadcast back in 1977 goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation's living rooms. Presented as found footage. Set in the 1970s, the film follows charismatic late-night host Jack Delroy (portrayed by the great iconoclast David Dastmalchian), who, in an effort to boost the ratings of his once hugely popular "Night Owls", has invited an eerie tableau of guests for his Hail Mary of an occult-focused Halloween broadcast. Dastmalchian stars as the host, joined by Laura Gordon, Ingrid Torelli, Ian Bliss, Fayssal Bazzi, and Rhys Auteri. All the reviews and buzz for this...

Imagine flipping through the channels to land on a 1970s late-night talk show. The charismatic host flashes a winning smile, the audience is buzzing with anticipation, and there’s an electric promise of groundbreaking television in the air. This is the seductive setting of Late Night With The Devil, where what starts as an ambitious attempt to boost ratings by hosting a live séance spirals into an unforeseen horror showcase.
Starring the ever-versatile David Dastmalchian, this horror flick promises a blend of nostalgia and nightmare, setting it apart in the crowded field of supernatural cinema.
Plot: When the Spotlight Turns Sinister
Late Night With The Devil takes us on a time warp to an era where the glow of the television was the main source of light in the dark of night. The film follows a live broadcast that takes a terrifying turn when a séance, intended as a ratings booster,...

One of my favorite experiences at last year's Overlook Film Festival was witnessing a screening of Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes' Late Night with the Devil. A film that will transfix you from its very first frame to the moment its eerie end credits roll, Late Night with the Devil is a must-see movie bolstered by a powerful performance from the always-great David Dastmalchian.
If you missed Late Night with the Devil on the festival circuit, you'll be able to see it soon when it comes to theaters on March 22nd, followed by a streaming release on Shudder beginning April 19th, and a new teaser trailer offers a ghoulish glimpse into the film's depiction of a late-night talk show that takes a demonic turn one fateful (and frightful) Halloween in 1977.
Synopsis: October 31, 1977. Johnny Carson rival Jack Delroy hosts a syndicated late night talk show ‘Night Owls’ that has long been...

"Tune in, freak out." IFC Films has uneveiled the first short teaser trailer for acclaimed indie horror thriller Late Night with the Devil, made by the Australian filmmakers Cameron & Colin Cairnes. This originally premiered at last year's SXSW Film Festival, playing at tons of other festivals around the world last year. A live television broadcast back in 1977 goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation's living rooms. Presented in a found footage style. IFC has this film set to open in March, so keep an eye out for it soon. Dastmalchian stars as the host, joined by Laura Gordon, Ingrid Torelli,...

Recasting Agent Smith in "The Matrix Resurrections" was a risky move that didn't live up to the iconic status of their predecessors. The franchise had already proven that recasting Agent Smith wasn't impossible. In "The Matrix Resurrections," Jonathan Groff's version of Agent Smith didn't capture the intensity or seriousness of Hugo Weaving's performance. He felt like a lesser, less threatening version of the iconic character. Actor Ian Bliss's portrayal of Bane as a twisted real-world version of Agent Smith in "The Matrix Revolutions" was a lot of fun and successfully recreated the campy seriousness of Weaving's original performance.
The Matrix franchise infamously recast Agent Smith in The Matrix Resurrections, but the series actually already did this trick much better 18 years earlier. Recasting iconic characters is always a risky move, as the new performances risk not living up to the legendary status of their predecessors. Agent Smith's recast...

The Matrix sequels introduced several fascinating new characters that added depth to the franchise's ensemble. Memorable characters like The Analyst, Bane, and The Trainman were introduced in the sequels, showcasing their unique traits and contributions to the story. Persephone, The Architect, and Bugs are standout characters who brought intriguing layers and compelling performances to the Matrix universe.
The Matrix sequels are considered to be drastically inferior to the classic original movie, and that’s an astute assessment, but they introduced some fascinating new characters into the franchise’s ensemble. The most iconic Matrix characters were introduced in the first film. Neo is the messianic figure destined to save humanity from the Machines; Trinity is one of the most badass female action heroes in movie history; Morpheus is the wise, noble warrior who introduced Neo (and the audience) to the truth about the universe; and Agent Smith is an unforgettable villain...
