Director Leigh Whannell gave the classic Universal Monsters a shot of modern life in 2020 with his thrilling new take on "The Invisible Man." In the aftermath of that success, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse set about reinventing another monster in the form of the Wolfman. Originally, Oscar-nominee Ryan Gosling ("Barbie") was set to star in "Wolf Man" that had director Cory Finley ("Bad Education") flirting with the director's chair before Derek Cianfrance ("Blue Valentine") came on board. Things changed a lot along the way, with Whannell ultimately settling into the director's chair. But why did Gosling drop out?
Gosling is still credited on "Wolf Man" as a producer, for what it's worth. Yet, he doesn't appear on screen. Instead, Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, the ill-fated man who becomes a werewolf. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend timed to the film's release, Whannell explained that the film didn't change a lot once Abbott took over.

Horror fans were very excited when it was announced that Leigh Whannell had stepped in to replace the departing Derek Cianfrance as director on Universal/Blumhouse's Wolf Man reboot, since the filmmaker had previously delivered his own take on another classic Universal Monster which proved to be a big critical and commercial hit.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Whannell is going to be able to repeat The Invisible Man's success.
Wolf Man arrived in theaters on Friday amid mostly negative reviews (it currently sits at 54% on Rotten Tomatoes), and the movie has now come in well below its already modest opening weekend box office estimates.
The downbeat werewolf flick was on track for a $17M-$21M bow, but only managed to take in $10.6M over three days (analysts believe it'll hit $12M by Monday).

Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man is now in theaters, and the Universal Monster reboot may be facing an uphill struggle after failing to take a big enough bite out of the box office over the weekend.
We're still waiting on international numbers, but the movie only managed to take in $4.45M on Friday (including Thursday previews) in North America, and is now on track for a $17M-$21M debut. This wouldn't exactly be a disaster for a film with a reported $25 million budget, but audiences really don't seem to be too fussed about this one.
Wolf Man has earned a C- CinemaScore, which is disappointing even for an R-rated horror movie. It's also dropped down to a "rotten" 54% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Again, overseas takings may be a lot better (and that relatively low budget has to be taken into consideration), but as things stand, Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King looks set to claim the No.

When Universal Pictures’ attempt at a Marvel-style “Dark Universe” flopped, Blumhouse stepped in with its own take on classic movie monsters. One of their biggest hits was The Invisible Man, which earned rave reviews and pulled in $144.5 million worldwide on just a $7 million budget.
Director Leigh Whannell, after working on The Invisible Man, shifted his focus to Wolf Man. For years, there’s been talk about a sequel focusing on Elisabeth Moss’s character, the “Invisible Woman.”
Jason Blum and James Wan have hinted that they’re open to continuing the story. However, Whannell recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s not interested in directing a sequel.
Whannell explained that crafting an ending is one of the hardest parts of screenwriting, mentioning his admiration for movies like Se7en, which he recently saw in IMAX.

When Universal Pictures' plan for an McU-style "Dark Universe" fell apart, Blumhouse wasted no time putting its own spin on those iconic movie monsters. The Invisible Man was among the first and received rave reviews before grossing $144.5 million worldwide on a mere $7 million budget.
While filmmaker Leigh Whannell has since moved on to Wolf Man, there's been chatter for years about him helming a sequel revolving around Elisabeth Moss' "Invisible Woman."
The movie ended by teasing a vigilante-style follow-up and both Jason Blum and James Wan have left the door open to it becoming a reality in previous interviews.
Unfortunately, Whannell doesn't seem overly interested and closed the door on stepping behind the camera for The Invisible Woman while talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via FearHQ.com).

Wolf Man is now playing in theaters in most major markets worldwide, and we're delving into the horror reboot's intense final act while touching on how this latest take on the classic Universal Monster differs from other versions of the terrifying tale.
Spoilers follow.
The movie begins with an overprotective (borderline abusive) father taking his young son hunting in the dense Oregon woods. After an encounter with an unseen creature, the man becomes obsessed with tracking the monster down.
We then jump forward 30 years, as Blake Lovell (Christopher Abbott) receives a letter informing him that his estranged father has legally been declared dead after going missing in the woods years earlier. Blake convinces his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth) to accompany him to his dad's secluded house to pack up his belongings.

The reboot of the classic Universal Monsters property The Wolf Man from Blumhouse Productions and The Invisible Man (2020) director Leigh Whannell is now in theatres – and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray wasn’t very impressed with it, giving it a 6/10 review that you can read Here and describing it as “well-acted, but not very scary.” Now, we want to know, what did you think of Wolf Man? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
The leads of this version of Wolf Man are Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, both of whom were in the 2011 film Martha Marcy May Marlene. Abbott is taking on the role of a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator. Garner is playing his wife. Sam Jaeger is also in the cast, along with child actress Matilda Firth, playing a character named Ginger: “Female, 10 years old, white. Blake and Charlotte’s daughter.

Universal and Blumhouse’s “Wolf Man” howls into theaters on Friday.
Co-written and directed by Leigh Whannell, who also made 2020’s update of “The Invisible Man,” this “Wolf Man” follows a young family, who encounter something horrifying in the woods and attempt to survive the night.
But is “Wolf Man” part of a larger cinematic universe? Let’s break it down.
Is “Wolf Man” part of a Universal Monsters universe?
It is not. At least not in the way that you’re imagining.
What does that mean?
A few years ago, Universal got very ambitious about what they referred to as the Dark Universe – a series of interconnected movies, much like Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe, that would feature Universal’s line-up of big screen beasts.
The first movie out of the gate was 2017’s “The Mummy,” a very expensive action movie starring Tom Cruise that underperformed at the box office.

It’s been an agonizing five-year wait for Leigh Whannell’s follow-up to his near-universally acclaimed The Invisible Man.
The Elisabeth Moss-led sci-fi thriller was the last hit movie before Covid forever altered the entertainment industry and world alike, having grossed nearly $140 million against a $7 million budget. Whannell’s victory lap may have been cut short as the U.S. population retreated inside during his film’s third week of release, but between The Invisible Man and his 2018 cult gem Upgrade, the Australian native officially reinvented himself as a must-see genre specialist, shedding his long-established identity as “one of the Saw guys” and “one half of Wan/Whannell.”
As the pandemic became more and more prolonged, Whannell and his co-writer/wife Corbett Tuck decided to channel their collectively challenging experience into Wolf Man, which is now another modern reimagining of a classic Universal monster à la The Invisible Man.

After the low-key success of 2020’s reboot of The Invisible Man, hampered by theater closures during the pandemic but critically acclaimed, Universal and Blumhouse decided to take another whack at a proud member of the studio’s storied classic monsters franchise that also includes Frankenstein and Dracula. In this case, it’s 1941’s chilling The Wolf Man, in which Lon Chaney Jr. played the memorable title character.
Creating a whole new story for a contemporary setting, director and co-writer (with Corbett Tuck) Leigh Whannell is back after so skillfully reimagining The Invisible Man as a female-centric horror tale of domestic abuse, among other issues. That movie for my money was one of the most impressive of all recent horror movies because it not only took a legendary figure of terror but made it pertinent in all kinds of unexpected ways for audiences, particularly with a powerful lead performance by Elisabeth Moss.

Blumhouse’s trailer for The Woman in the Yard opens with a child’s voice-over. “When the sun is bright and the wind is still, she comes to you like a sudden chill,” says the child, adding, “Draped in black from head to toe, how she got there, you’ll never know.” And apparently, whatever you do, you shouldn’t let this terrifying presence inside your house.

The highly anticipated horror film Wolf Man, directed by Leigh Whannell, is set to hit theaters on January 17, 2025, marking the seventh installment in Universal’s Wolf Man franchise.
Starring Christopher Abbott as the lead character Blake, the film explores a chilling transformation that redefines the classic werewolf narrative. A recently released clip offers audiences the most detailed glimpse yet of this reimagined monster.
The story follows Blake, a family man who moves from San Francisco to rural Oregon with his wife Charlotte (played by Emmy winner Julia Garner) and their daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth). They relocate to Blake’s childhood home after inheriting the property, left vacant following his father’s mysterious disappearance.
The suspense begins when, on a moonlit night, the family is attacked by a werewolf. Although they manage to barricade themselves inside, Blake is clawed during the encounter, setting off his horrifying transformation.

Jamie Lee Curtis knows a thing or two about sticky situations. Like the one she found herself in when she’d agreed to star in an odd little series about a maple syrup heist gone comically awry, but then had to back out due to scheduling conflicts.
Nonplussed, she solved the problem herself. Convinced she knew who should replace her, she cold-called Margo Martindale — famed for her Emmy-winning turns on Justified and The Americans — and convinced her to step in as syrup farmer-turned-criminal mastermind Ruth Landry on Amazon Prime’s The Sticky. And when the producers called Curtis needing someone to play the hit man, she sold them on the idea of not just a gender swap, but also a pretty severe makeover for the battle-scarred Beau.
Here, Curtis tells Gold Derby about why she wanted to do a sitcom, how her Oscar and Emmy wins have changed her career...

Blumhouse and Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man is set to hit theaters later this month, and tickets for the horror reboot are now officially on sale.
To accompany the announcement, we have some new posters, a TV spot and featurette giving us our best look yet at the other werewolf that Christopher Abbott's Blake will change into.
The new spot includes a (very) quick glimpse of the beast, but the featurette spotlights the full creature design via some concept maquettes. The video also features Whannell and the cast discussing this latest take on the classic Universal Monster.
It's entirely possible that what we've seen of the Wolf Man so far will not be the final form, as Blake could transform into a more lupine-looking creature towards the end of the movie.
See it. Fear it. Step into Leigh Whannell’s vision of #WolfManMovie. Only in theaters January 17. https://t.

Nikki Glaser hosted last night's Golden Globes ceremony, and after last year's Jo Koy debacle, the consensus seems to be that the often controversial stand-up comedian did an excellent job.
Glaser, who is known for her scathing celebrity roasts, did have to tone herself down somewhat for the awards show, but still managed to slip a few outrageous observations and acerbic barbs in during her opening monologue, and Joker: Folie à Deux found itself in the firing line.

Wolf Man director Leigh Whannell has teased one key difference about the titular monster because of the movie's use of "100% practical" effects. The upcoming Wolf Man reboot focuses on a family who take shelter in a farmhouse during a full moon, after they're attacked by a mysterious creature while on the road. As the couple and their daughter recover from the incident, the father, Blake (Christopher Abbott), begins to change, slowly transforming into the titular monster. The reboot was written by Whannell and Corbett Tuck, while being produced by Jason Blum and Ryan Gosling.
Speaking about the movie with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), Whannell revealed Wolf Man's titular monster will look different from previous incarnations because of the film's "100% practical" effects. The director confirmed the design will be different from the werewolf's classic look, but also revealed the version promoted at Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights also doesn't look like the movie's final version.

The Black Phone is a 2021 horror film directed by Scott Derrickson, based on a short story by Joe Hill. It stars Mason Thames as Finney, a boy kidnapped by a serial killer known as The Grabber (played by Ethan Hawke).
While trapped, Finney uses a mysterious black phone to communicate with the ghosts of The Grabber’s previous victims, who help him plan his escape. The film also features Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransone.
In October 2023, it was announced that ‘The Black Phone’ would have a sequel, originally planned for June 2025, but it has now been moved to October 2025. JustJared recently shared which cast members we can expect to return to the movie, and which new additions will be joining the production in so far undisclosed roles.

A sequel for The Black Phone is on the way!
The first movie, produced by Jason Blum‘s Blumhouse outlet, hit theaters in 2022 and picked up $161.4 million at the global box office.

A few weeks ago, Prime Video put out all six episodes of The Sticky, a terrific comedic/crime saga starring the great Margo Martindale as Ruth Landry, a Canadian maple syrup farmer who schemes to steal millions of dollars of maple syrup (it’s loosely based on an actual heist that took place in Quebec). Her co-stars in the show include Jamie Lee Curtis (who also produced the show with Jason Blum), as well as the great Chris Diamantopoulos, who’s been in loads of stuff over the years, including The Office, Silicon Valley, the movie version of The Three Stooges (he was Moe), Red One, and much more. He’s also the official voice of Mickey Mouse for Disney, a role which has netted him two Emmy nominations.

The Mummy is on the cusp of another resurrection, and this time, it’s got a new boss in charge: Lee Cronin. Fresh off the horror rollercoaster of Evil Dead Rise, the director is now stepping into the dusty old shoes of an ancient curse, hoping to give the mummified franchise a much-needed jolt of life. After years of reboots, remakes, and re-whatevers, the classic terror is crawling back to theaters, with a release date set for April 17, 2026.

Well, it is Christmas time, so it makes sense that Blumhouse would give us a lovely gift to unwrap – a new The Mummy movie! After several big-screen iterations, including 1932’s version with Boris Karloff, the cult-classic Brendan Fraser-fronted adventure movies, and the slightly more ill-fated, Tom Cruise-starring, supposed Dark Universe-starting 2017 take, Universal’s mummified monster is back. At the helm will be writer and director Lee Cronin, the man behind 2023’s excellent Evil Dead Rise.
A Cronin project had been on the books for a while, announced earlier this year, but confirmation that it’s a new spin on The Mummy came today via an Instagram post from Cronin and Blumhouse. It reveals the script’s title page, with the caption ‘Something terrifying will be unleashed in 2026’.

Back in June, it was announced that Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin had signed on to write and direct a new genre project for Atomic Monster, Blumhouse Productions, and New Line Cinema… and now we know what that mysterious project is. Cronin confirmed, “This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. Fresh off last year’s Evil Dead Rise, it was announced earlier this year that director Lee Cronin will next be directing an untitled horror movie for Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster. Today, Cronin took to Instagram to reveal that feature is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy!
“This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening,” said writer/director Lee Cronin.
Cronin is writing and directing the film, produced by Atomic Monster, Blumhouse and Doppelgängers, for New Line. New Line Cinema will be releasing this one in theaters April 17, 2026.
“Collaborating with Jason, James and the wonderful teams from these two storied and massively successful organizations is what perfect nightmares are made of,” said Cronin previously. “Getting to return to New Line Cinema and my wonderful partners over there is the cherry on top.

A couple of leaked screenshots from The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man reboot have found their way online (via Reddit), and they reveal our first glimpse of the movie's other werewolf.
Our first look at what was assumed to be the titular Wolfman via an actor in a costume at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights was met with a lot of backlash, but the most recent trailer appeared to confirm that this will be the creature responsible for the initial attack, leaving Christopher Abbott's Blake to change into a different beast altogether.
Whannell addressed the negative response during an interview with NME.
“The marketing department for a movie is so huge,” he said, “it’s really impossible to keep tabs on every single thing. So when something comes out that maybe the internet decides they don’t like, the only thing I can think is: ‘Well,...

Exclusive: Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis is the top choice to star in the Murder, She Wrote movie coming together at Universal, Dish hears. No deal yet, but we here she’s looming likely to play the Jessica Fletcher role popularized by Angela Lansbury in the hit series that ran 12 seasons on CBS series.
Script is by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, the duo behind the Craig Gillespie-directed drama Dumb Money, about the GameStop short squeeze of 2021. Murder, She Wrote is being produced by Lord Miller and Amy Pascal.
Now, it’s early, but this makes a great deal of sense. Whodunits are hot, from the Knives Out trilogy with Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc, to the Hercule Poirot mysteries with Kenneth Branagh that began with Murder On The Orient Express. Just as hot is the career second wind of Curtis, who has come so much further than...

We just got our first look at M3GAN 2.0! Returning director Gerard Johnstone shared his thoughts on the sequel, saying, “It’s very ambitious. I felt the story needed to be bigger, with more scale and scope, but it’s still a tiny budget compared to Marvel movies.“
The first M3GAN movie was a massive hit, earning over $181 million worldwide on just a $12 million budget. Critics praised its mix of horror and humor, and Deadline Hollywood estimated the film’s net profit at $78.8 million after expenses and revenues.
Universal loved the success and announced a sequel in 2022. By 2023, M3GAN 2.0 was officially confirmed, with Akela Cooper writing the script and Allison Williams and Violet McGraw returning. The release date was moved from January 2025 to June 27, 2025.
While we wait for the trailer, we know Williams and McGraw are back, along with horror legends James Wan and Jason Blum producing. New cast members include Timm Sharp,...
