Few franchises have gone as far off the rails as the Howling franchise did, and it did so very quickly, going to one of the best werewolf movies ever made with director Joe Dante’s The Howling to director Philippe Mora’s oddball follow-up Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf. Still, Howling II does have it charms and its fans, so Vinegar Syndrome have given the film a 4K release – and they’ve brought it to 4K with a ton of bonus features! Copies are available to order on the Vinegar Syndrome website and go for the price of $37.99.
Directed by Philippe Mora from a screenplay by Robert Sarno and Gary Brandner, Howling II has the following synopsis: Ben is mourning the recent death of his sister, Karen, whom he believes to have been killed in a savage wolf attack. At her funeral, Ben is approached by the mysterious Stefan,...

Joe Dante's 1981 werewolf flick "The Howling" boasts one of the most impressive werewolf transformation scenes in the genre's history. A vicious serial killer named Eddie Quist (Robert Picardo) confront's the film's protagonist, Karen (Dee Wallace), an investigative reporter recovering from a previous attack at a woods-bound therapy camp. Lit through the slits in Venetian blinds, Quist's face extends and mutates, his mouth ripping into a terrifying wolf grin, his eyes bulging. Karen witnesses the entire transformation and is, naturally, terrified. Quist was already known for his penchant for murder, but learning that he is a werewolf makes him that much more monstrous. The effects were provided by the amazing Rob Bottin.
"The Howling," while a corker of a monster movie, is also a clever satire of then-modern therapy. A certain kind of "touchy-feely" language had come into vogue in the late '70s and early '80s, and...

Mark Alan Miller and his creative team at Encyclopocalypse have been bringing horror books to life with compelling audio versions, and now the company is expanding with the launch of a publishing imprint for original content and movie novelizations, including Fright Night and Re-Animator:
Press Release: Los Angeles, CA- Saturn and Rondo award-winning producer and writer Mark Alan Miller, best known for Nightbreed: The Director's Cut and Boom! Studios’ Hellraiser comics, is adding a new title to his already expansive resume: publisher.
Miller announced this week that his company Encyclopocalypse, which specializes in audio adaptations of notable works of horror literature, will be expanding into publishing books itself under a new expansion that will encompass both paperback and e-books.
The move came about partially as a result of Encyclopcoalyse acquiring the audio rights to John Skipp and Craig Spector’s novelization of Fright Night, the classic 1985 horror comedy starring Roddy McDowell and Chris Sarandon.

The Howling (1981) deserves its cult status as, arguably, one of the best werewolf films ever made. Screenwriter John Sayles rewrote Terence H. Andy Muschietti, the director of Stephen King adaptations It and It: Chapter Two, has been tapped by Netflix to helm a remake of classic ‘80s werewolf movie The Howling, after having previously stated it to be a project he’d love to be involved with.
The story follows a TV news anchor who develops amnesia resulting from the trauma of acting as bait in a police sting to capture the serial killer stalking her. She’s sent along with her husband to recuperate at a secluded rural resort, only for it to transpire that the isolation hides a number of werewolves who will stop at nothing to maintain their secret. The film is considered one of the greatest werewolf movies ever made, and alongside An American Werewolf in London is certainly the best that the ‘80s produced.
The original film was ostensibly based on the novel of the same name by horror author Gary Brandner,...

Titling a film is no trivial matter, especially from a marketing perspective. As history has proven, there have been numerous films made which have little more to offer than a cracking title. A really sharp one can help sell the poorest product, conversely a stellar piece of movie-making can be undermined by something uninspired. When you're trying to make your movie stand out in a marketplace awash with alternatives, an attention-grabbing title is a crucial consideration and you'll probably be aiming for something that harbours intrigue, allure, and is capable of fostering curiosity and anticipation. When it was first unleashed theatrically in 1985, Howling II: Stirba – Werewolf Bitch was certainly an attention-grabber. Whether the film itself turned out to be good, bad or indifferent, as enticing titles go the suffix Stirba – Werewolf Bitch sure did the job, sending out a premium come and see me you know you...

With Run The Series, The A.V. Club examines film franchises, studying how they change and evolve with each new installment.
Horror franchises come in two varieties: those based on existing properties (typically novels) and original creations (even if they’re not all that original in and of themselves). One that falls into the former category is the series that sprung from Gary Brandner’s The Howling, published in 1977 and billed as “A blood-chilling novel in the shocking tradition of Salem’s Lot” and “a terrifying tale of the occult” on the cover of its first paperback edition. Strange to think that a property that has become synonymous with werewolves, spawning eight movies in 35 years, was coy about their existence at the outset. But this was not the case when Brandner’s bestial creatures made the leap to the silver screen in 1981.

Special mention: Häxan
Directed by Benjamin Christensen
Denmark / Sweden, 1922
Genre: Documentary
Häxan (a.k.a The Witches or Witchcraft Through The Ages) is a 1922 silent documentary about the history of witchcraft, told in a variety of styles, from illustrated slideshows to dramatized reenactments of alleged real-life events. Written and directed by Benjamin Christensen, and based partly on Christensen’s study of the Malleus Maleficarum, Häxan is a fine examination of how superstition and the misunderstanding of mental illness could lead to the hysteria of the witch-hunts. At the time, it was the most expensive Scandinavian film ever made, costing nearly 2 million Swedish krona. Although it won acclaim in Denmark and Sweden, the film was banned in the United States and heavily censored in other countries for what were considered, at that time, graphic depictions of torture, nudity, and sexual perversion. Depending on which version you’re watching, the commentary is...

From The Craft and The Birds to The Fugitive and She's All That, the many film reboots and remakes currently in the works...
Over the years that Den Of Geek has been going, we've regularly been charting the assortment of reboots and remakes that are making their way through the Hollywood system. This, then, is the current state of play. We've removed a bunch of projects that seem utterly dead - the once mooted remakes of Videodrome and Timecrimes, for instance - but we'll keep this list up to date as and when we hear of more.
Without further ado, here's what's coming up...
Akira

As much as I hate to admit it now, I didn’t always love Howling II. But over the years, as I’ve revisited this cult classic time and time (and time) again, mostly due to Christopher Lee and his badass punk rock attitude in the film, I’ve grown to appreciate Phillippe Mora’s wonderfully surrealistic take on lycanthropes that feels like a modernized twist on the classic Hammer films I grew up loving. And while it may not be a flawless effort by any means, I can’t help but adore a film that gave us Sybil Danning as Queen of the Werewolves, put Lee in a New Wave night club (complete with zany sunglasses and leather jacket) and also gave the modern lycan mythology a bit of an unexpected twist.

I unabashedly love Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf and, on July 14, the patron saints of classic cult film- Scream Factory- are resurrecting Philippe Mora’s sequel on Blu-ray. In honor of its release, I was fortunate to be able to speak with Mora about his experiences working on the film, collaborating with both Sybil Danning and the legendary Christopher Lee, and how the latter had quite a lifetime of experiences even before he became one of the greatest actors to grace the silver screen.
Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me, Philippe- I am a huge fan of Howling II and I even have an original one-sheet hanging in my kitchen.

It never ends. If a talented filmmaker assembles an awesome movie you can bet some big wig in a Hollywood office is concocting a plan to remake that movie. Knowing this it shouldnt surprise too many to learn that Joe Dantes game changing werewolf flick The Howling is going to be remade. Emaji Entertainment is planning to bring a contemporary rendition of the film which is based on a novel written by the great Gary Brandner to the masses soon. This time around it looks as though the picture wont be limited by a low financial ceiling. This one is going to be a big budget retelling.

1981 werewolf movie The Howling has been picked up for a remake...
And we thought this week was going to be light on remake stories. As it turns out though, one's snuck in right at the end: it looks as if Joe Dante's 1981 werewolf movie The Howling is being added to the remake list.
The rights to the film have been picked up by Emaju Entertainment. Based on the novels of Gary Brandner, The Howling was a sizeable success at the start of the 80s, notable in particular for its excellent werewolf transformation sequence. It was followed by many sequels, most recently 2011's The Howling: Reborn.
It looks like it's very early days for the new The Howling, with no news at the moment as to who's going to be writing, directing or starring in the new version. We'd be surprised, sadly, if Dante himself is involved.

From 1981’s An American Werewolf in London to 1985’s Silver Bullet, moviegoers had a good number of films featuring full moon howlers to enjoy. Not to be forgotten are The Howling movies (loosely based on the late Gary Brandner’s book series) that began in ’81 and continued with ’85’s Howling II, and Scream Factory has announced they will release Howling II on Blu-ray for the first time this summer.

From random films with altered names to unrelated storylines, we take a look at 15 incredibly tenuous horror and sci-fi film sequels...
The profit-driven nature of filmmaking usually means that, if a movie's a hit, sequels follow. And it's sometimes the case that, particularly in the realm of low-budget sci-fi and horror, those sequels are trotted out in a rush, or don't have anything to do with the film they're following.
This isn't to say that the sequels on this list are necessarily bad - it's a proper mixed bag of the great, the mediocre and the downright awful - but in each instance, these sequels have only vague links to their predecessors, or worse still, they're entirely different films rebranded to fit an existing franchise.
Our list is by no means definitive - rather, we've chosen a collection of films that we find the most memorable.

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

Halloween is nigh, and that means horror movies aplenty, not that we need any more of an excuse to dust off the classics of our favorite genre. But Beyond Fest, an event taking place in La throughout this October, is making that experience interactive, bringing together some of the finest filmmakers, the best movies, and even infusing screenings with live music from the likes of Umberto, Goblin, and Alan Howarth.
Perhaps the day I was most looking forward to was this past Saturday’s “Full Moon” double feature, serving up perhaps the two best werewolf movies of all-time, right after one another. Kicking off the evening is 1981′s The Howling, followed by the movie that it (and every werewolf movie) is indebted to: Universal’s The Wolf Man, with Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, and Bela Lugosi. That right there is reason enough to make the trek to the movie theater…...

Monster movies had seen their heyday come and go by the time Joe Dante made The Howling in 1981 and it seemed as if everyone had seen everything. However, Dante manages to create a unique entry in the werewolf movie canon with a murder mystery with supernatural creatures in it. The Howling still stands as one of the most inventive and fun horror films from the 1980′s and this stacked to the rafters Blu-ray from Scream Factory is a must have.
TV news journalist Karen White (Dee Wallace) reluctantly meets a known predator Eddie Quist (Robert Picardo) in an adult theater one night on a sting arranged with the local police. Things go from bad for worse for Karen when the evening ends in a seemingly fatal shoot out. 1981 was a pretty exciting year for fans of werewolf cinema. Not only did we get John Landis' masterful An American Werewolf in London and a decent adaptation of Whitley Streiber's novel Wolfen, but there was also Joe Dante's The Howling, which is a clever little werewolf flick with a sense of humor that still holds up pretty darn well after all these years. No, the special effects aren't quite as amazing as those found in the John Landis movie, and some of the film's social commentary is stuck firmly in the late 1970s, but given how seldom we get new werewolf flicks these days, there's always something to be said for an old one that can still deliver the goods.

Howling II: … Your Sister Is a Werewolf
Written by Robert Sarno, Gary Brandner
Directed by Philippe Mora
USA, 1985
If you couldn’t tell from the ridiculous title, Howling II: … Your Sister is a Werewolf is quite a bizarre film. Blending together the myths of Lycans and vampires to craft a profoundly confusing feature.
Starting off with a brief Christopher Lee intro then picking up immediately after the events of the first Howling. For those who are unfamiliar with that film let’s just summarize it as a female reporter, Karen White, who discovers a community of werewolves, gets bitten and then transforms on live TV to expose the world to the werewolf threat. It seems that somehow this broadcast was cutoff and covered up so the film takes place in a world still ignorant of the lycan existence. At the funeral of said reporter we are introduced to her brother...

Last week I reviewed The Wicked, a nasty little bit of throwback-style horror from the pen of James Newman. Whenever a book grabs me like The Wicked did – shakes me up and reminds me of why I spend so much time reading this crazy genre – I like to talk to the writer, get inside his or her head and find out what led them to make the choices they made in writing it. Luckily for me, Newman was more than willing to answer a few of my questions.
In the afterword to your novel The Wicked, you talk about the influence of the horror of the 1980s. Which novels and writers of that era influence you in general and The Wicked in particular?
Oh, man. How much time do you have?
Here's my Top Ten: The House Next Door by Anne Rivers-Siddons (that one was the first "adult" horror novel I ever read,...

We’ve all heard the crazy, everlasting love stories that go against all odds: Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella and Prince Charming, Beauty and the Beast, and so on ad nauseam. Most of those tales have happily ever after tacked onto the end, but sometimes, things just don’t pan out for the lovebirds. When it comes to impossible romance, it can’t get much worse than inter-species love in high school.
Will Kidman (Landon Liboiron Degrassi, Terra Nova) is your typical nerdy high school senior, with only one exception: his mom was brutally slain and he was stripped from the womb and left for dead. He grew up with an understandably overprotective father, a father that he’s about to leave when he goes off to college in a few months. There have been many portrayals of werewolves and other shapeshifting man/woman-beasts, in the media of film, but I can’t say there has been many memorable ones. With The Wolf Man (1941) Lon Chaney Jr. transformed into a werewolf at the full moon, and created one of the three most famous horror icons of the modern day. Werewolf fiction as since been an exceptionally diverse genre with ancient folkloric roots and manifold modern re-interpretations – from high shcool basketball players to American tourists hiking through the UK. Here is the list of my personal favourites.
#13- El aullido del diablo/ Howl of the Devil (1987)
Directed by: Paul Naschy
Paul Naschy, also known as Jacinto Molina Alvarez, was a Spanish movie actor, screenwriter, and director working primarily in horror films. His portrayals of numerous classic horror figures—the wolfman, the hunchback, Count Dracula, the mummy—have earned him recognition as the Spanish Lon Chaney.

The Howling: Reborn marks the eighth instalment in the series that all began with a little horror film, based on a novel by Gary Brandner and directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Hole), that showcased some fantastic make up work with some amusing tongue-in-cheek humour. Now, I’m no expert on the following entries into the franchise – I’ve only caught Howling III, and that just so happens to be one of the worst film’s I’ve ever seen - but a reboot of the series had me intrigued.
It had been a good while since I saw a terrific werewolf film – the last great one was 2002’s Dog Soldiers – so I decided to check this one out.
