US composer Elliot Goldenthal will receive a lifetime achievement award at the upcoming 24th World Soundtrack Awards (Wsa), Film Fest Gent’s annual film music awards ceremony.

Goldenthal is most renowned for his Oscar, Golden Globe and Wsa-winning score for Frida, as well as scoring Interview With The Vampire, Heat, Batman Forever, Michael Collins, Titus and Across The Universe across his accomplished career.

He will be presented with his award on October 16 at the Wsa ceremony and concert in Ghent, in which a selection of Goldenthal’s work will be performed by the Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Dirk Brossé.

Volker Bertelmann has won the film composer of the year at the 23rd World Soundtrack Awards (Wsa), which took place tonight (October 21), at the closing night of Film Fest Gent.

Bertelmann was nominated for his scores for War Sailor, All Quiet On The Western Front and Memory Of Water. Other nominees in this category included Carter Burwell for The Banshees of Inisherin, Catherine Called Birdy and To Catch A Killer and Hildur Guðnadóttir for Women Talking and Tár.

The ‘Wolfwalkers’ composer will recieve lifetime achievement award.

French composer Bruno Coulais is to receive a lifetime achievement award at the 2022 World Soundtrack Awards, which are presented at Film Fest Ghent on October 22.

Coulais’ music for screen ranges from 2001 French hit The Crimson Rivers through to documentary epic Winged Migration and acclaimed animation Wolfwalkers.

His first score was for filmmaker François Reichenbach, who asked him to provide music for the 1979 short documentary México Mágico.

1996 was a turning point in his career after he created the score for nature documentary Microcosmos, winning Coulais his first of three César Awards

The World Soundtrack Awards has named award-winning composer Max Richter as the guest of honour for its upcoming edition in October.

The German-born, UK composer is known for writing scores spanning both film and TV from period feature Mary Queen Of Scots and Oscar-nominated animation Waltz With Bashir to HBO’s The Leftovers and BBC drama Taboo. He has also recorded nearly a dozen solo albums.

Eleni Karaindrou set to perform with the Brussels Philharmonic.

Greek composer Eleni Karaindrou is set to receive the lifetime achievement award at the 21st World Soundtrack Awards.

The ceremony is the traditional closing night event of the Film Fest Ghent (October 12-23) and is scheduled to take place as a physical event this year. It will be held at the opera house in Ghent for the first time.

Karaindrou is best known for her long-time collaboration with Greek director Theo Angelopoulos. The pair have worked together on eight films including Palme d’Or winner Eternity And A Day and Oscar nominee The Weeping Meadow.

Lady Gaga, Post Malone and Kris Bowers are among the contenders for the 2019 World Soundtrack Awards.

Other composers nominated for awards include Nicholas Britell (“If Beale Street Could Talk”), Alan Silvestri (“Avengers: Endgame”) and John Powell (“How to Train Your Dragon: Hidden World”) as well as Daniel Pemberton (“Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse”) and Benjamin Wallfisch (“Hellboy”). Bowers is in the running for TV Composer of the Year for his latest work on Ava Duvernay’s “When They See Us” which earned the composer his first Emmy nomination. Other works of Bowers recognized include “Black Monday,” “For The People,” and “Warriors of Liberty City.”

Along with Grammy award-winning song “Shallow,” Post Malone’s “Sunflower,”which appears on the soundtrack for “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse,” is nominated for best original song written for a film.

American composer Marco Beltrami will be the guest of honor at the World Soundtrack Awards, part of the Ghent Film Festival, on Oct. 18 in Belgium.

Beltrami, a two-time Oscar nominee (for “3:10 to Yuma” and “The Hurt Locker”), recently scored the horror hit “A Quiet Place” and the Oscar winner for Best Documentary “Free Solo.” Music from both will be performed in a concert by the Brussels Philharmonic.

Festival music director Dirk Brossé, who will conduct, called Beltrami “an all-around composer whose music moves within the most diverse musical styles and genres. Dedicating considerable attention to melody and obsessed by rhythms, Marco offers a rich palette of both acoustic and electronic colors.”

The World Soundtrack Awards will celebrate its 15th anniversary by feteing one of the most brilliant film composers of his generation, also known for his scores of Back To The Future and Forrest Gump.

French composer Francis Lai is to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 14th World Soundtrack Awards which take place during the 41st Gent Film Festival, which will this year focus on France.

Born in Nice in 1932, Lai’s composing credits include Claude Lelouch’s Oscar winning A man And A Woman (1966). Lai went on to collaborate with Lelouch on numerous films. In 1970 Lai scored his biggest international hit with the soundtrack to Love Story.

A selection of his work will be performed by the Brussels Philharmonic and conducted by Dirk Brossé at the World Soundtrack Awards, which take place on October 25 in the Belgium city of Gent.

Mychael Danna and Adele win prizes at the World Soundtrack Awards 2013.

The World Soundtrack Academy has revealed the winners of the World Soundtrack Awards 2013, the closing event of the 40th Film Fest Gent.

Mychael Danna received two awards for Life of Pi including Film Composer of the Year and Best Original Film Score of the Year.

Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film was named as Skyfall, performed by Adele.

Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin were awarded the Discovery of the Year for the music they wrote for Beasts of the Southern Wild.

The Public Choice Award went to Rahman Altin for The Butterfly’s Dream (Kelebeğin Rüyası).

The Ghent Film Festival has announced a new CD in their ‘For the Record’ series. A couple of days ago Star Wars: A Musical Journey premiered and became an instant hit. This concert features some of John Williams best-known music slightly re-arranged for concert purposes, played against the colorful images of the Star Wars pictures. Here's my lightning quick interview with conductor Dirk Brossé who conducted several Elliot Goldenthal scores and held the baton on Hans Zimmer's only concert in Ghent. He talks about getting the commission, working with John Williams and the problem with click tracks:

To be honest, as far as film music is concerned, this was one of the most beautiful days in my life, when I got the phone call from John Williams' office if I was interested in conducting the Star Wars: A Musical Journey concert.
