La Termita Films, the production label of double San Sebastian Golden Shell winners Isaki Lacuesta and Isa Campo, has struck a production alliance with Accidental Films, the newly formed label founded by Sara Gonzalo, managing director over 2011-24 of production powerhouse Bambu Producciones.
The alliance catches Lacuesta and Campo at new career highs, Lacuesta having directed Berlin competition player “One Year, One Night” and “Saturn Return,” a Spanish Film and Direction winner at March’s Malaga Festival; Campo co-wrote Iciar Bollain’s anticipated “I’m Nevenka,” which world premieres in San Sebastian main competition this weekend.
Gonzalo served as general manager at Bambú when it moved into ever larger industrial propositions from 2011-13’s “Grand Hotel” to “Velvet” (2013-15), “Cable Girls” (2017-20) and “Fariña” (2018), driving an acceptance in international of original Spanish series without the need to be dubbed into neutral Spanish in Latin America.

Cannes — Televisió de Cataunya (Tvc), best known abroad for its biggest linear channel, TV3, will re-launch on Oct. 30 as 3Cat, the name also of its new AVOD platform, bowing as the driver of the most far-reaching digital makeover of any TV operator in Spain.
Also incorporating Catalunya Radio, the Catalan-language 3Cat reflects a larger pivot in Europe where broadcasters are starting to look at their VOD platforms as either SVOD profit centers, or at least as a very key part of their business. This is the case of state-owned networks as they seek to reach out to catch an ever larger part of the audience which doesn’t watch TV on TV, so still fulfilling their public service remit.
This trend can be seen in and outside Spain, with France Télevisions and the BBC moving their Ott offer front and enter when it comes to acquisitions.

“Modestly speaking, we’ve tried to create a culture at Movistar Plus+ which attracts talent. We have a lot of respect for what creators want to tell and believe in them,” Domingo Corral, Movistar Plus+ director of fiction and entertainment, has said.
One case in point is Berto Romero, whose latest series, “The Other Side” (“El otro lado”), world premieres at Spain’s San Sebastian Festival on Sunday.
Romero broke out with star turns on Andreu Buenafuente’s “Buenafuente” and “Leit Motiv,” two late-night mainstays on Movistar Plus+ produced by El Terrat, owned by The Mediapro Studio from 2019. Over 2018-19, his first fiction series, the Terrat-produced “Look What You’ve Done,” a fresh comedic take on the tribulations of parenting, ran for three seasons on Movistar Plus+. Now “The Other Side” weighs in as a step-up in ambition for Romero.
The comedy remains. In early scenes, Nacho Nieto (Romero), once...

In a milestone move, HBO Max will bow on June 18 in Spain and Latin America a weekly Max Original TV format version of “Nadie Sabe Nada” (“Nobody Knows Anything”), a hit comedy improv format starring Andreu Buenafuente and Berto Romero, two of Spain’s best known and admired figures on its late-night talk show scene.
HBO Max has previously announced the adaptation of the reality dating competition and Max Original “FBoy Island” in Spain, Netherlands and Sweden. But “Nadie Sabe Nada” will be its first Spanish Max Original entertainment show to premiere in Spain.
Buenafuente broke out in Spain bowing in 2005 on broadcast network Antena 3 the David Letterman-ish “Buenafuente,” a late night talk show which gently-ribbed some of Spain’s still sacred cows after 28 years of democracy.
“Nadie Sabe Nada” maintains Buenafuente’s hallmark bemusement and keen sense of irony, but simply has Buenafuente and Romero sitting at...

Madrid — Javier Fesser’s “Champions” won best picture at the 33rd Spanish Academy Goya Awards, having seemed to have been locked out of major awards.
“Champions” entered the ceremony as most probably the favorite in one of the most open fields in recent years, given the diversity of best picture contenders in artistic and industry terms.
But, produced by Morena Films, Películas Oendelton and Movistar +, “Champions” had already been selected by the Academy as Spain’s Oscar entry and had proven a blockbuster hit on home turf for Upi Spain, earning €18.5 million ($21.1 million). Selling near worldwide, the comedy turns on an off-the-rails Spanish coach sentenced to train a basketball team of special-needs players.
Before director Javier Fesser climbed onto the stage on Saturday night to take best picture, however, the film had won just two of 10 nominations, for breakthrough actor (Jesús Vidal) and song (Coque Malla’s “Este es...

The Spanish public station Tve’s telecast of the 2010 Goya Awards ceremony on Sunday night reached the Goyas’ largest TV audience ever. On average, approximately 4.65 million people watched Daniel Monzón’s prison drama Cell 211 win eight trophies; more than 14.7 million people — or about one third of the Spanish population — watched at least part of the awards ceremony hosted by entertainer Andreu Buenafuente. The previous Goya telecast record holder was the 2005 ceremony, when 3.72 million people watched the show. That year, Pedro Almodóvar’s Bad Education lost most of the top awards to Alejandro Amenábar’s The Sea Inside. Amenábar was also in the running this year for the historical drama Agora, but [...]...
