Measuring end-of-life anxiety with an open heart if not the most disciplined head, science-fiction-tinged drama Omni Loop serves up a couple nice moments for its lead performers, but otherwise relies on a viewer’s offscreen feelings about mortality to supply its punch. The result, pleasant enough but frustratingly bland, exists in a soupy,...

After starring in five films and eleven TV series last year, Ayo Edebiri’s 2024 is just slightly less crazy. Following up The Bear and Inside Out 2 this summer, she’ll next be seen in Omni Loop, a sci-fi feature that premiered at SXSW earlier this year. Now set for a September 20 theatrical and digital release from Magnolia Pictures, the first trailer has arrived.
Written and directed by Bernardo Britto, the film follows a quantum physicist (Mary-Louise Parker) who finds herself stuck in a time loop, with a black hole growing in her chest and only a week to live. When she meets a gifted student (Edebiri), they team up to save her life – and to unlock the mysteries of time travel.
Also starring Hannah Pearl Utt, Chris Witaske, Carlos Jacott, Harris Yulin, Steven Maier, and Eddie Cahill, see the trailer and poster below.

“Groundhog Day,” but make it about an inescapable terminal illness. In writer/director Bernardo Britto’s “Omni Loop,” Mary-Louise Parker plays a quantum physicist who learns she has only a week to live. Except she learns that many times over, and as she says in the trailer, “This has happened before. Many times.” IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer for “Omni Loop,” which premiered at SXSW and will hit theaters from Magnolia this fall, below.
Here’s the official synopsis: “A quantum physicist (Mary-Louise Parker) finds herself stuck in a time loop, with a black hole growing in her chest and only a week to live. When she meets a gifted student (Ayo Edebiri), they team up to save her life — and to unlock the mysteries of time travel.”

If you could choose to be in a Groundhog Day scenario with any two actors, who would you choose? You could certainly do a lot worse than Mary-Louise Parker and Ayo Edebiri, the stars of the new time travel dramedy Omni Loop. To lean into millennial parlance, this is a...

History repeats itself in this ingenious but surprisingly heartfelt sci-fi, which takes the premise of Groundhog Day and fashions from it a poignant statement about life and mortality. Refreshingly for the genre, it focuses on a middle-aged woman — a scientist-slash-physicist, even — whose 55th birthday and final breath will occur within the same week. But though there is an element of resistance to the latter, Omni Loop is unusual in that it isn’t simply about breaking the cycle; Bernardo Britto’s film is about facing the inevitable, gently phasing out the genre elements to reach an understated but emotional climax.

For 10 years, Friends‘ annual Thanksgiving episodes were a beloved tradition for fans of the NBC sitcom. And even after the series ended in 2004, fans have continued to rewatch these holiday installments on DVDs, syndication and streaming.
While the series skipped a proper Thanksgiving episode in season two (despite the Mockolate treats Courteney Cox’s Monica prepares, the main storyline revolves around the love triangle between Rachel Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel, David Schwimmer’s Ross and Lauren Tom’s Julie), the other nine seasons brought memorable moments ranging from Rachel’s beef-filled trifle to an action-packed yet comedic touch football game to a guest appearance from Aniston’s then real-life husband Brad Pitt, who played her high school nemesis.
These mostly standalone episodes also advanced the plot (Monica and Chandler, played by the late Matthew Perry, found out they were getting a baby and Chandler declared his love for Monica) and...

Ten years ago, actor Sean Hayes and playwright David Adjmi were working together to develop a play based on the life of Oscar Levant, the actor, pianist and notorious wit of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Now Hayes is preparing to bring Good Night, Oscar to Broadway next spring. The play is written by Doug Wright.
Exactly how, why and when Hayes and Adjmi split up their partnership on the project is being disputed by both sides in an unusually public way. Adjmi wrote a long Facebook post detailing his perspective earlier this week, as publicity for Good Night, Oscar is just beginning to emerge. Theater twitter took note, as did The New York Times.
In response, Hayes, Wright and their producer Beth Williams have released their own extensive statement, obtained by Deadline. The two accounts of exactly how Levant came into Hayes’ life are notably different.

Fox has picked up a second season of its popular summer drama series Fantasy Island.
The renewal announced today follows strong ratings for the contemporary version of the classic 1977-84 series, from writer-producers Liz Craft and Sarah Fain. This past summer, the reboot starring Roselyn Sanchez and Kiara Barnes ranked as the No. 1 new scripted program among adults 18-49 and was Fox’s most streamed new drama series since 9-1-1: Lone Star in January 2020.
Fantasy Island takes place at a luxury resort, where literally any fantasy requested by guests is fulfilled, although they rarely turn out as expected. Delving into the “what if” questions — both big and small — that keep us awake at night, each episode will tell emotional, provocative stories about people who arrive with dreams and desires.

From a human resources standpoint, Conviction‘s Hayes Morrison is kind of a nightmare. In her first five days on the job, Hayley Atwell’s character called her co-worker a “moron,” day-drank in her office and pretended to do coke in front of her boss.

ABC clearly loves Hayley Atwell, though not enough to keep Agent Carter on the air. So after giving Peggy her walking papers in May, ABC has Atwell fronting this fall’s Conviction, a snappy, Scandal-esque legal drama (premiering Monday at 10/9c). But is it worthy of Atwell’s considerable talents, or your time? The jury, as they say, is still out.
When we meet Hayes Morrison (Atwell), she’s stretching and dancing in a jail cell. She’s been there before, you see: She’s the wild-child daughter of a powerful political family — her mom’s a U.S.

Important note: I’m a complete fanatic for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and everything even remotely related to it. That’s why I was simultaneously distraught when ABC canceled my favorite McU cable network show, Marvel’s Agent Carter, and elated when it kept the divine Hayley Atwell around for one of its new crime shows Conviction, which is a notch above Betrayal and a step below Notorious as far as generically meaningless titles go. Alas, it’s a near tragedy to discover that Atwell’s role in the series, which she at least prevents from being a complete waste of time with one or two moments of charm, could essentially be played by anyone and elicit the same result.
Unlike the coterie of incarcerated innocents at the center of the show, Conviction does no one participating one iota of good: everyone is...

ABC is at this point so enamored with the idea of television that weaves in melodrama and struggles under the weight of dragging along its own gimmick that it can’t leave an interesting premise alone.
Such are the problems you have to hope drift to the sidelines as Conviction maneuvers through further episodes.
The heart of the show revolves around a new investigative unit in New York City – the Conviction Integrity Unit – that gets five days per case to go over convictions to see if they can find any innocent people who are sitting behind bars. The team consists of a prosecutor, a star defense attorney, a crack investigator, and a specialist in forensics and all things science related.
It’s not a bad premise, and it gives us a chance to explore police drama from a fresh perspective and stay on top of headlines and/or the relevant niche of the zeitgeist.

A version of this interview with Hayley Atwell and Eddie Cahill first appeared in the print edition of TheWrap Magazine’s Fall TV Issue. In ABC’s “Conviction,” 34-year-old Hayley Atwell (Marvel’s “Agent Carter“) plays Hayes Morrison, a former First Daughter who is found with cocaine and strong-armed by a Da (Eddie Cahill, 38) into heading New York’s Conviction Integrity Unit in this ABC drama. What makes this show special? Hayley Atwell: This is a fast-paced legal procedural, but at the center of it is a woman who is pretty blurry around the edges. She’s very close to pushing the self-destruct button.

Well, unfortunately, it happened. ABC has officially cancelled Marvel’s Agent Carter after two fantastic seasons. In my opinion, they cancelled the wrong Marvel series. Agent Carter was far superior to anything that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been doing, and it’s sad that such a great series has prematurely come to an end. For some strange reason, people just stopped watching! I guess fans should have seen this coming. After all, they literally buried Agent Carter in Captain America: Civil War. Oh well, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will go on.
I guess there’s kind of a silver lining to this news, though, and that is that Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell is set to star in a new series for ABC called Conviction, which just got a green light for the 2017-2017 season.
