June Callwood was a pioneering Canadian journalist who participated in the promotion of many causes, including child poverty, aboriginal rights, homelessness, free speech, racism, reproductive freedom, capital punishment and prison reform. She was involved in the organization and development of a number of assistance agencies in and around the city of Toronto, including Casey's, an AIDS hospice named in honor of her youngest child, who was killed by a drunk driver; Jessie's, for teen parents; Nellie's, for abused and homeless women; Maggie's, for prostitutes; and Digger House, for teenagers at risk, living on the streets and getting into trouble with the law.
