2 Celebs Fought Over Vanessa Kirby Before She Dated Paul Rabil: Her Dating Life Rumor Explained
Image
Vanessa Kirby is well into her pregnancy, as she and boyfriend Paul Rabil get ready to welcome their first child into the world. However, before she met the retired professional lacrosse player, Kirby was linked to multiple actors at different times, including Douglas Booth and Christian Cooke.

In fact, there was a time when the two actors were rumored to be in a feud with each other over Kirby. Cooke and Kirby were stated to be together from 2009-2011. After they went their separate ways for whatever reason, Kirby began her romantic relationship with Douglas Booth, with whom she starred in the 2011 drama, ‘Great Expectations.’ They reportedly dated from 2012-13.

During this time, both Cooke and Booth were cast in Carlo Carlei’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’, with the latter playing the Romeo to Hailee Steinfeld‘s Juliet. Cooke played the role of Romeo’s loyal friend, Mercutio. Given their link to Kirby,...

10 Best Hailee Steinfeld Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
In 2010, the world was introduced to a new star who would soon become unavoidable in Hollywood: Hailee Steinfeld. Though she had made her screen debut a year earlier with the short film "She's A Fox," after her breakthrough role in "True Grit" in 2010, she has gone on to become one of the biggest young stars in the entertainment industry across film, television, and music -- and she's not even 30 years old. It helps that Steinfeld grew up in Los Angeles, but it wasn't long until her undeniable talent was recognized by her future collaborators.

In the 15 years since her feature-length debut in "True Grit," Steinfeld has gone from an up-and-comer to an established name in the industry, as evidenced by her appearance in Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" as second in billing only to Michael B. Jordan. In that span of time, she's taken on plenty of coveted roles in showbiz,...

Italy’s Publispei Set Sights On International Markets As It Unveils ‘Flowers Over The Inferno’ At Ittv in Los Angeles
Image
Publispei is one of the oldest TV and film production companies in Italy and creator of some of the country’s most beloved, long-running series such as Un Medico In Famiglia and I Cesaroni.

Until now, the company’s renown has been confined to Italy but company president Verdiana Bixio wants to change this and expand its international footprint.

The Rome-based producer is in Los Angeles this week for the Italian TV Forum&Festival (Ittv) where she will present Publispei’s upcoming high-end crime show Flowers Over The Inferno on Tuesday (November 8).

The presentation will be part of a larger Rai Fiction Ittv showcase of upcoming dramas, moderated by Michele Zatta, Commissioning Editor International Co-Productions at the Italian state broadcaster.

“It marks a change for me to present a series first in Los Angeles rather than in Italy,” says Bixio.

“The move to be more international is a necessity in...

‘Rosaline’ Review: Kaitlyn Dever Grounds Fanciful Spin on ‘Romeo and Juliet’
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Before Romeo fell for Juliet, he lusted after her cousin, Rosaline. He exalted her beauty to his friends (“The all-seeing sun / ne’er saw her match since first the world begun”) and bemoaned her rejection (“She hath forsworn to love, and in that vow / Do I live dead that live to tell it now”). To hoist the lovelorn Montague heir out of the depths of his dramatic doting, Romeo’s cousins encourage him to sneak into a Capulet supper. There he meets Juliet, and so begins their epic romance.

There have been attempts to nudge Rosaline out of the margins, to flesh a person out of a ghostly image. In some adaptations of Shakespeare’s tragedy, like Carlo Carlei’s Romeo & Juliet (2013), she gets more than a passing mention. In others, her presence is the point. Rosaline, which premieres on Hulu on Oct.

Ron Howard at an event for Return to Mayberry (1986)
Ron Howard Will Direct Robert Downey Jr. in 'Pinocchio'
Ron Howard at an event for Return to Mayberry (1986)
For the past four years, Robert Downey Jr. has been trying to get a new live-action version of Pinocchio off the ground, with the actor set to star as Geppetto and produce through his Team Downey company. Today, the project is moving forward once again, with The Tracking Board reporting that Ron Howard is now attached to direct. The filmamker replaces Paul Thomas Anderson, who stepped away from Pinocchio back in November.

We first reported on this project back in January 2012, when Robert Downey Jr. signed on to portray Geppetto and produce. Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller had originally been tasked with writing the script, with Michael Mitnick (The Giver), Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Paul Thomas Anderson also working on drafts of the script. The site reports that Ron Howard is expected to have a say in who the next writer will be.

The project is expected to be a family-oriented movie,...

Ferrari (2003)
Michael Mann's 'Enzo Ferrari' lands at Paramount and wins a crazy development race
Ferrari (2003)
Will Michael Mann succeed where David Cronenberg and so many others have merely crashed and burned previously? We'll find out if he manages to cross the finish line (I'll stop now, I swear) with "Enzo Ferrari," a film that Michael Mann has been trying to make for almost twenty years now. There was a point where David Cronenberg spent several years trying to make a film called "Red Cars," which would have dealt with the life of Enzo Ferrari dung the 1961 racing season, and it was primarily meant to be told from the perspective of Phil Hill, a driver working for the millionaire and struggling to hold up against the demands of winning a championship.   Cronenberg eventually found himself at odds with the Ferrari family, with threats of legal action, and he took all of that research and energy and put it into a book that published some remarkable rare...

The Latest Take on "Romeo and Juliet" Feels Rather Generic
For Shakespeare lovers who prefer their film adaptations to be more straightforward like Kenneth Branagh’s Much Ado About Nothing and less showy like Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, Carlo Carlei’s recent re-adaptation of the latter should fit squarely within their comfort zone, though perhaps a bit too squarely. Taking very few risks and aspiring to be nothing more than a beautifully filmed but plain rendition, Romeo and Juliet delivers great performances but in a way that feels quite bland when compared to the long list of films that have taken us down this road many, many, many times before. Baz Luhrmann had the right idea: if you’re going to take the time to commit yet another version of Romeo and Juliet to the screen, you need to do something to make it stand out from the tens of times it’s been done before. Carlei’s take...

Screenwriter Julian Fellowes Talks Romeo & Juliet, Adapting Shakespeare, Downton Abbey Season Four (and Five), Gilded Age, and More
Romeo & Juliet is the timeless story of star-crossed lovers from warring families. The families of Montague and Capulet will use any excuse to publicly fight in the streets of Verona, so when Romeo (Douglas Booth) falls for Juliet (Hailee Steinfeld), it quickly receives the wrath of both of their families, when all they want to do is be together forever. Written by Julian Fellowes and directed by Carlo Carlei, the film also stars Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Natascha McElhone, Ed Westwick, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Lesley Manville. At the film’s press day, screenwriter Julian Fellowes (who is also the creator/writer of the hit drama series Downton Abbey) spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about why he was excited to tackle Romeo & Juliet for the big screen, how he worked exclusively from the play itself, and watching actors Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld bring it to life. Box-Office: "Gravity" Soars, "Machete" Dies
It was a great weekend at the box-office for Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks, but not for anyone else.

Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" held onto the top spot for the second weekend in a row with a whopping $44.3 million, dropping a mere 20% from its record-breaking debut last weekend. After just ten days, it has managed a $123.4 million domestic gross and a $68 million overseas gross.

The Tom Hanks-led "Captain Phillips" opened to strong reviews and a very healthy $26 million - that's better than several of Hanks' last few movies, and better than the opening of "Argo" ($19.5M) in the same release slot last year.

Not faring so well was Robert Rodriguez's sequel "Machete Kills," the heavily promoted action comedy which landed in fourth place with a mere $3.8 million - making it one of the worst wide opening releases of the year (think "Paranoia" bad). Reviews were terrible, but as...

Weekend Box Office: 'Gravity' Holds at #1 and 'Captain Phillips' Opens Strong
Wow, what a hold for Gravity, dropping only 20.7% from its October record opening weekend and bringing in $44.2 million. As BoxOfficeMojo.com tweets, this is a second weekend bigger than Inception ($42.7M), Skyfall ($41.1M) and The Blind Side ($40.1M). What I'm most curious about when I look at this result, however, is to wonder what exactly people are taking away from the film. How many see Gravity as an auteur's visionc How many see it as a space thrillerc How many see it as a popcorn featurec I can only assume it's a movie many audience members take away a different impression of what they just saw... which I can only assume is the reason for its success outside of the fact it's a very solid movie. However, that's not the end of the success to be found at the box office. This same time last year, Argo was opening to $19.4 million.

Film Review: New ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is Almost Passable if You Haven’t Seen It, Unnecessary if You Have
Chicago – When I walked out of my screening for 2013’s “Romeo and Juliet” with Hailee Steinfeld (Oscar nominated for “True Grit”) and London’s Douglas Booth (previously unknown to the U.S.), I had to remember that not everyone’s seen this story in one way or another.

Rating: 2.0/5.0

So, I immediately polled four teenage girls. Batting away their butterflies and seeing through the hearts glossing over their eyes, they unanimously loved it, thought Booth was so very dreamy and went home with a new outlook on love – probably that love conquers all. For their modern-day version, they’d probably even give up texting for 12 whole days if it meant they couldn’t be with their boy crush.

Read Adam Fendelman’s full review of “Romeo and Juliet”.

But back to my reality and like most other humans on planet Earth, I’ve seen this William Shakespeare tragedy told mostly...

The Fifth Estate, Le Week-end, Machete Kills: this week's new films
The Fifth Estate | Le Week-end | Machete Kills | Not Another Happy Ending | Baggage Claim | Romeo & Juliet | Nobody's Daughter Haewon

The Fifth Estate (15)

(Bill Condon, 2013, Us/Bel) Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl, David Thewlis, Laura Linney, Peter Capaldi. 128 mins

Cumberbatch was seemingly born to play Julian Assange, though this pacy hot-button-issue thriller struggles to make the Wikileaks story into another Social Network. There are some questionable cinematic flourishes (ooh, cyberspace!), but at the core is the bromance between Brühl's wide-eyed German techie (Daniel Berg) and the enigmatic Aussie – partners in a morally hazardous social justice crusade that climaxes with, er, the Guardian.

Le Week-end (15)

(Roger Michell, 2013, UK) Jim Broadbent, Lindsay Duncan, Jeff Goldblum. 93 mins

Before Midnight for seniors, as a 60-something couple's Parisian second honeymoon gives rise to bickering, regrets, and fears for the future, but youthful romantic comedy too. There's wit and wisdom in the writing and the seasoned performers are very good company.

Natascha McElhone, Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Laura Morante, Hailee Steinfeld, and Douglas Booth in Romeo & Juliet (2013)
Ebiri: Romeo and Juliet Is Undercut by Its Romeo and Juliet
Natascha McElhone, Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Laura Morante, Hailee Steinfeld, and Douglas Booth in Romeo & Juliet (2013)
Modernizing Shakespeare has become so endemic in recent years that the Medieval knights who come charging out of the gates in the opening shots of the new Romeo and Juliet have an aura of brazenness about them. This version, they seem to promise us, as director Carlo Carlei’s camera races around them, will be fearlessly, defiantly traditional. In other words, when a character yells, “Put up your sword” this time around, he won’t be pulling out a gun. Madness!Still, there’s only so much the new film can do, and we know all the key beats already: “In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,” Montague hunk Romeo (Douglas Booth) crashes a costume ball thrown by his family’s mortal rivals the Capulets and falls for their prize beauty, Juliet (Hailee Steinfeld). One fateful balcony encounter later, the two swoon for each other and, unbeknownst to their families,...

Review: Romeo and Juliet
Plot: Romeo and Juliet, two teenagers at opposite sides of forever dueling families, fall in love at first sight. It doesn't end well. Review: Carlo Carlei's Romeo & Juliet is a lovely looking film that lacks the fiery passion inherent in William Shakespeare's play, and has completely miscast the two lead roles. It's also altered the lines of the play in order to appeal to a younder crowd; in fact, by the looks of all the hunky dudes on display and the treacly, PG-13 romance that...

Romeo and Juliet Review
Following on from the immense critical acclaim of television series Downton Abbey, writer Julian Fellowes has been granted the creative licence to write pretty much whatever he wants, knowing fully well someone out there will commission it. Well, he’s audaciously tackled Shakespeare with his latest project, teaming up with director Carlo Carlei to adapt Romeo and Juliet. However it’s this very temerity in rewriting one of the Bard’s most defining plays, that provides this adaption with with its one – and only – unique aspect.

The plot synopsis speaks for itself really, with Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld taking on the eponymous leading roles. Meanwhile, Damien Lewis plays Lord Capulet, Kodi Smit-McPhee takes on Benvolio, while Paul Giamatti plays Friar Laurence, in this tragic love story of two people hopelessly falling in love, yet under immense social pressure to remain apart, given the intense rivalry between the two conflicting families they have spawned from.

Romeo & Juliet review: Douglas Booth, Hailee Steinfeld are star-crossed
Carlo Carlei in Flight of the Innocent (1992)
Director: Carlo Carlei; Screenwriter: Julian Fellowes; Starring: Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Damian Lewis, Ed Westwick, Paul Giamatti; Running time: 118 mins; Certificate: PG

There are two major problems when it comes to bringing Romeo and Juliet to the big screen. Firstly, the story is so well known and the text so sacrosanct that drastically changing it up is out of the question. Secondly, Baz Luhrmann's mid-'90s take was so energetic and invigorating, how do you move Shakespeare's great tragedy on from that and still keep it feeling fresh? The last film to have a go at this was 2011's entertaining Gnomeo & Juliet, an animation with a cast of garden gnomes backed by classic Elton John tunes (yes, really!).

This 2013 live-action edition appears to have all the right ingredients, with Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes on adaptation duties and fast-rising stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld leading a cast that...

Wherefore art thou... Gnomeo?: A history of 'Romeo and Juliet' movies
Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting in Romeo and Juliet (1968)
With the release of Carlo Carlei's Romeo and Juliet, we at Digital Spy decided to take a look back at the other adaptations of William Shakespeare's famous tragedy.

The 2013 incarnation hits today (October 11) and stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld as the star-crossed lovers, alongside Damian Lewis, Stellan Skarsgard and Paul Giamatti, with the screenplay written by Downtown Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.

There have been plenty of adaptations from over the years, so here we pick out the best of the bunch...

West Side Story (1961)

Perhaps not the most blatant adaptation of Shakespeare's play, but the inspiration is clearly abundant in directors Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins's Oscar-winning musical from 1961. The story revolves around two youngsters - Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer - from rival gangs who fall in love (sound familiar?) that fuels the feud between members of the White Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.

Romeo And Juliet Review
One of the key elements of Shakespeare’s plays is that no matter how many times you see an adaptation of one of his works, you can derive something new from it. That’s certainly true of Carlo Carlei’s version of Romeo and Juliet. Given that the tale has been recreated countless times, the idea of a straightforward adaptation is refreshing. The story, like many of Shakespeare’s works, has been done to death, but his vivid language is seldom short of breathtaking and thus, never tiring.

There’s also a lovely score by Abel Korzeniowski, stunning costumes by Carlo Poggioli, and production designer Tonino Zera’s utilization of the still breathtaking sites of Verona and Mantua (where some of the project was shot). Unfortunately, there’s also a lot to be desired.

The film can’t compete with Franco Zeffirelli’s masterful 1968 interpretation or Baz Luhrmann’s imaginative...

Romeo And Juliet – The Review
So much updating of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has been done over the years that some of the subtleties that made the story such a classic may have gotten lost in the shuffle (the first film version in 1936 starred 34-year-old Norma Shearer and 43-year-old Leslie Howard as the 15-years old doomed lovers!). That is why the newest take from Italian director Carlo Carlei is such a pleasure. He seems to have a great, classical, purist understanding of the material, and though Romeo And Juliet is pared down, Carlei has the skill to make his version as cinematic as possible while respecting the source. The plot is well known, loaded with tragedy that could always have been so easily averted. It takes place in 16th century renaissance Italy. Romeo Montague (Douglas Booth) and Juliet Capulet (Hailee Steinfeld) fall in love, despite the fact that their families are bitter enemies. Their...

Press Conference Interview With The Cast, Writer And Director Of Romeo And Juliet
William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has been resurrected for another film adaptation in an effort to introduce the classic play to a new generation. But unlike the previous version directed by Baz Luhrmann, which modernized Shakespeare’s work and added a boisterous soundtrack to it, this effort, directed by Italian filmmaker Carlo Carlei, brings the play back to its more traditional, romantic version.

At a recent press conference for Romeo and Juliet, held in Los Angeles, we had the chance to hear Douglas Booth, Hailee Steinfeld, Carlo Carlei and writer Julian Fellowes chat about the film. Among the many things they discussed were how the actors wrapped their heads around the dialogue, how Booth and Steinfeld kept the chemistry going on set, what challenges the adaptation presented and more.

Check out the interview below and enjoy!

Regarding the sword fighting in the movie, did you have to learn to...

Romeo and Juliet – review
If only someone would pop a Luhrmann-style cap in the ass of this conservative Shakespeare adaptation

The Italian director Carlo Carlei creates a very stately and conservative new version of Romeo and Juliet, with sun-dappled settings in Verona and Mantua remiscent of Branagh's Much Ado from the 1990s, but here with very trad doublet-and-hose costumes; the screenplay adaptation is by Julian Fellowes, who cheekily tweaks the script with a bit of invented heritage Bardspeak of his own. Hailee Steinfeld (from the Coens' True Grit) plays Juliet and Douglas Booth (Pip from the recent TV Great Expectations) is Romeo. Damian Lewis and Natascha McElhone are Lord and Lady Capulet; Lesley Manville rather steals the show as a quivering, quavering nurse, and the same goes for Paul Giamatti as a sorrowing Friar Laurence. It has a sort of soapy reliability, but compare it to the blazing passion of Baz Luhrmann's modern-day...

'Romeo & Juliet' Family Review: 5 Things Every Parent Should Know About the Hailee Steinfeld Adaptation
Are all Shakespearean adaptations alike? That is the question, and the answer is quite obviously "No." Not all of the Bard's plays are appropriate for younger viewers, but "Romeo and Juliet" is usually a student's introduction to Shakespeare's tragedies, because what could be more compelling to teens than a story about doomed star-crossed lovers? Enter this new adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet," directed by Italian filmmaker Carlo Carlei and adapted by Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes. It stars Douglas Booth, a swoon-worthy Brit, as Romeo and rising American actress Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet. There's no need to give a synopsis of the story, but it's notable that the filmmakers want to make this adaptation accessible to teen audiences -- the official hashtag is #forbiddenlove -- instead of older audiences who are firmly attached to the previous cinematic adaptations or reinterpretations of the play .

Here are five issues to consider before taking...

Review: Romeo & Juliet, I Pray Thee Know This Movie Loves Close-Ups
If every generation gets the Romeo & Juliet it deserves, then this generation is doomed to relive the past in a reverential and utterly unremarkable series of close-ups. Adapted without distinction by Julian Fellowes and directed without distraction by Carlo Carlei, the 2013 movie edition of William Shakespeare's tragedy features Hailee Steinfeld (15 years old at the time of filming) and Douglas Booth (19 or 20) as the young lovers, and even there the casting is mismatched. Perhaps if Kodi Smit-McPhee (15) had starred as Romeo opposite Steinfeld's Juliet, the story of two teenagers caught up in smoldering adolescent passion would have played better, and possibly would have elicited greater empathy for the characters. As it is, however, Smit-McPhee is relegated to playing Benvolio, Romeo's...

‘Romeo and Juliet’ Review: It’s Just Teen Hormones, Dude
Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth in Romeo & Juliet (2013)
As the first English language adaptation of Shakespeare’s iconic play since 2000’s “Romeo Must Die,” and the first to offer a straightforward take since Zeffirelli’s 1968 version, Carlo Carlei’s “Romeo and Juliet” is a sobering reminder that impetuous and hormonally charged teenagers were a thing long before they started trading photos of their genitals with Snapchat. Adapted with unironic earnestness by Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”), this new version stars Douglas Booth (“Lol”) and Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit”) as the star-crossed lovers, whose doomed romance seems more a byproduct of adolescent impatience than the enduring allure of true love.

Trailer: Romeo and Juliet for the Millennials
You know the story, sorry, the most dangerous love story ever told, and yet that hasn't stopped Hollywood, and the world of performing arts in general, from telling and retelling one of Shakespeare's most enduring tales.

Though Baz Lurhmann's pop art bonanza remains the most famous version of Romeo and Juliet for those of us who came of age in the '90s, this take on the star-crossed lovers, directed by Italian Carlo Carlei, takes a more straightforward approach and with strong leads in Hailee Steinfeld and the pillow-lipped Douglas Booth and a screenplay from "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes, it's got some ace pedigree as it begins its journey to theatres October 11.

With supporting work from Ed Westwick - what a perfect pouty dandy he makes - Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Stellan Skarsgard and Kodi Smit-McPhee, this 2013 version of violent passions that led to violent ends is ready to...
