Shaboozey Defends Megan Moroney After “Hateful Comments” Following Ama’s Side-Eye: “Let’s Not Twist The Message”
Image
Shaboozey is clarifying his viral reaction at the 2025 American Music Awards and noting it had nothing to do with his co-presenter Megan Moroney.

The country star presented the Favorite Country Duo or Group category at the AMAs in Las Vegas on Monday night alongside Moroney.

Reading off the teleprompter, Moroney said the award they were going to present had been awarded to The Carter Family, “who basically invented country music.” This remark prompted a side-eye from Shaboozey, which turned him into an instant meme.

Following the viral AMAs moment, Shaboozey took to Moroney’s latest Instagram post to clear up that the shade was not to her, as she didn’t write the script she read at the award show.

“Just want to clear something up: my reaction at the AMAs had nothing to do with Megan Moroney!” Shaboozey wrote. “She’s an incredibly talented, hard-working artist who’s doing amazing things for country music,...

Here’s Why Shaboozey Side-Eyed That ‘Carter Family Invented Country Music’ Line at the AMAs
Image
Over the past few years, an array of musicians, historians, researchers, and critics have helped upend the history of country music. They’ve brought overdue attention to the myriad, yet long-ignored contributions of Black musicians to country’s origins, stressing the way record company owners overlooked Black artists for recording sessions, or slapped bogus genre terms on the songs they did record (“race records”) to differentiate them from the similar tunes recorded by white artists.

With all this knowledge far more well-known now than it ever has been, it was...

Shaboozey’s Reaction to Megan Moroney Saying the Carter Family Invented Country Music at AMAs Goes Viral
Image
Fans were quick to clock Shaboozey’s reaction to Megan Moroney saying the Carter Family invented country music while presenting at the 2025 American Music Awards Monday night.

The awkward moment happened when the two singers were presenting the award for favorite country duo or group, which ultimately went to Dan + Shay.

“Country music has been an important part of Ama history. The very first year of this show, the award for favorite male country artist went to the great Charlie Pride,” Shaboozey read from the teleprompter first.

Moroney was up next, reading, “That same year, favorite female artist went to Lynn Anderson, and this award [favorite country duo or group] went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music.”

It was that last line that seemingly caught the “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” singer by surprise, as he appeared to give her a side eye before pausing to process what she said and letting...

Amas 2025: Shaboozey Goes Viral For Reaction To Megan Moroney Saying The Carter Family Invented Country Music
Image
Shaboozey became a meme following a viral moment at the 2025 American Music Awards.

The country star took the stage in Las Vegas next to fellow artist Megan Moroney to present the Favorite Country Duo or Group category.

Shaboozey started by remembering that country music has been a part of the AMAs’ history, recalling that the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to Charley Pride.

Things got awkward when Moroney took a turn reading off the teleprompter, saying, “That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson, and this award [Favorite Country Duo or Group] went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music.”

Shaboozey paused to process Moroney’s words and let out a laugh before continuing to present the nominees in the category, which was ultimately won by the duo Dan and Shay.

Update: Shaboozey Defends Megan Moroney After “Hateful Comments” Following Ama’s Side-Eye: “Let’s Not Twist The Message...

Travis Tritt, 62, Shocks Fans With New Look
Image
Travis Tritt is still as popular now as he was in the late 1990s but his career path took a turn as country music evolved with new artists. In a recent interview, the singer spoke out about why he was labeled as an outlaw in the music industry and why he’s not in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Plus, some fans thought the singer was unrecognizable at a recent concert.

Travis Tritt Addresses Country Music Hall Of Fame Snub

Travis Tritt is one of many well-deserving artists who aren’t in the Country Music Hall of Fame. The Nashville tourist spot recently unveiled a Dolly Parton exhibit about her life and career. While Travis Tritt isn’t on Dolly Parton’s legendary level (who is?) he’s still one of the most successful country artists.

The singer recently sat down with the Drifting Cowboys podcast. He opened up...

Kenny Chesney To Release Book Later This Year

Kenny Chesney fans are anxiously awaiting new music from the popular singer. He released his 20th studio album, “Born” in 2024. But it seems his focus has shifted away from music for the moment.

It was announced earlier this year that his next release isn’t an album, but a book. Heart Life Music will be available in bookstores in the first week of November. The book will track his career from humble beginnings in a small town in Tennessee to a chart-topping musician in Nashville. But he wants to be clear: this isn’t his memoir.

How playing Ronnie Spector could earn Zendaya her first Oscar nomination
Image
As it turns out, Zendaya would never let go of playing Ronnie Spector. Five years after it was announced that the Emmy Award-winning Euphoria star would embody the Ronettes lead singer in a feature film, Deadline reported on Wednesday that the A24 project had secured a new director in Oscar winner Barry Jenkins. Dave Kajganich, a frequent Luca Guadagnino collaborator, is now writing the screenplay after Pulitzer Prize winner Jackie Sibblies Drury was initially mentioned as a possible screenwriter in 2020 when the project was first announced.

Deadline offered no timeline for the Spector film, but it’s safe to assume it’ll be a while. Jenkins was recently attached to direct a science-fiction movie for Universal with Glen Powell in a lead role. At the same time, Zendaya is seemingly constantly busy and now filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. However, whenever the project comes to fruition and lands an actual release date,...

‘A Complete Unknown’ recreated an iconic Bob Dylan costume design fit for the film’s finale: ‘A great rock archetype that still echoes to this day’
Image
Receiving a single Oscar nomination would be an incredible personal achievement. But the four nominations A Complete Unknown costume designer Arianne Phillips has earned over her career extend “beyond my wildest 8-year-old dreams,” she tells Gold Derby in the final days of this year’s awards campaign.

Her bid this year for Best Costume Design is a full-circle moment. Phillips received her first nomination for James Mangold’s Walk the Line, a character-driven musical biography about Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. Now, she’s back in competition at the Oscars for the Bob Dylan film A Complete Unknown, another Magnold feature about a legendary musician. To further add to the symmetry, Johnny Cash is a supporting character.

“This nomination resonates in a way that is similar to probably my first nomination,” Phillips says. “Plus, it was a year of great costumed movies – very vivid costume movies, big costume movies.

With ‘A Complete Unknown,’ James Mangold Makes Movie — and Music — Magic Again
Image
Some directors are good with music. James Mangold is one of them. Back in 2006, “Walk the Line” scored five Oscar nods and won Best Actress for Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash. (Joaquin as Johnny Cash lost to Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Capote”). A hard-drinking Johnny Cash (Boyd Holbrook) makes a memorable appearance in “A Complete Unknown” (in theaters December 25 from Searchlight), Mangold’s latest music movie, this time focused on the four-year origin myth of Bob Dylan, from his arrival in New York at age 19 in 1961 to his going electric at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.

Mangold is returning to his bent for more personal filmmaking (Best Picture Oscar nominee “Ford v Ferrari”) after tackling 2023 franchise entry “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” for Steven Spielberg. The writer/director spoke to me on Zoom during his global press tour for “A Complete Unknown,” which has earned upbeat reviews,...

‘A Complete Unknown’ Review: Timothée Chalamet Astonishes As Young Bob Dylan In James Mangold’s Thrilling Musical Drama
Image
“How does it feel? To be without a home? Like a complete unknown? Like a rolling stone?”

I don’t know how many times I have heard that lyric and that song but never really gave it a whole lot of thought until I saw James Mangold’s very rich story of four years in the life of a young Bob Dylan in the early 1960s. That lyric is where this anti-biopic, A Complete Unknown, gets its title, and also takes a stab at defining who Dylan (played magnificently by a note-perfect Timothée Chalamet) was as he tried to find his way after travelling from home in Minnesota to New York City in 1961. He turned up at age 19, a budding genius who didn’t know it then, but by mid-decade would make seismic changes in the music landscape while trying to figure out just who the artist as a young man really is.

Golden Globes Close Calls Decided: ‘Anora,’ The Apprentice,’ ‘Heretic,’ ‘A Real Pain,’ Others Stake Claims As Dramas or Musical/Comedies (Exclusive)
Image
Filmmakers and distributors of awards-hopefuls have until Nov. 4 to submit their category preference — drama versus musical or comedy — to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification that it finds egregiously inaccurate.

Some of this year’s cases are inarguable — for instance, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, in which characters spontaneously burst into song, is clearly a musical (if not a comedy), and A24’s The Brutalist, in which an immigrant faces all sorts of harrowing hurdles, is clearly a drama. There are, however, also plenty of close-calls, about which many have made assumptions, but, in most cases, not confirmed.

The Hollywood Reporter has been working the phones and can now report which way almost every contender is breaking. This intel is, of course, subject to change prior to Nov. 4, and to being overturned by the Globes thereafter — but it is current as of this writing.

Image
New York, early 1960s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. As he forms his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement and, refusing to be defined, makes a controversial choice that culturally reverberates worldwide. Timothée Chalamet stars and sings as Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, the electric true story behind the rise of one of the most iconic singer-songwriters in history.

Here’s a look at the brand new trailer.

Wow – he sounds just like Dylan, especially with the singing.

James Mangold has directed two biopic movies. Walk The Link (2005), the story of Johnny Cash starring Joaquin Phoenix as Cash and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash. The...

The Highwaymen: The Fights and Friendship of Country’s Great Supergroup
Image
This story was originally published May 20, 2016, on rollingstone.com.

When the Highwaymen recorded “Desperados Waiting for a Train,” written by visionary songwriter Guy Clark, who died in 2016, the supergroup of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson landed on their most poignant song. While Jimmy Webb’s “Highwayman” may have been the foursome’s signature, Clark’s “Desperados,” released on their 1985 debut album, dovetailed with their own outlaw legacy: that of aging icons who indulged the young guns their bravado while still beating them on the draw. Timothe Chalamet's New Biopic Is The Perfect Follow-Up To This 82% Rotten Tomatoes Hit
Image
Timothe Chalamet stars in A Complete Unknown, directed by James Mangold. The film explores the life of Bob Dylan, following Mangold's success with Walk the Line. A Complete Unknown may focus on Dylan's shift to electric instruments, bringing a fresh perspective to music biopics.

Timothe Chalamet brings his enormous talent to James Mangold's biopic, A Complete Unknown. Mangold has a unique ability to sell the story of American music legends. Walk the Line earned Reese Witherspoon an Oscar for her portrayal of country icon June Carter Cash and Joaquin Phoenix a Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of the legendary Johnny Cash. A Complete Unknown continues Mangold's exploration into the lives of music legends as he takes on the life of Bob Dylan.

A Complete Unknown marks Mangold's first time directing a musical biopic since Walk the Line. However, much of Mangold's work delves into an understanding of Americana legend.

The Studio That Rejected ‘Walk the Line’ Spent Way More on ‘Walk Hard’
Image
The trailer just dropped for A Complete Unknown, Hollywood’s latest attempt to turn your parents’ record collection into box-office gold. The upcoming film stars Timothée Chalamet as the legendary Bob Dylan, chronicling the young troubadour’s early years as he bums around the ‘60s New York folk circuit and (spoiler alert?) eventually freaks everybody out by playing an electric guitar.

Pfft, call us when there’s a movie about the making of Dylan’s Christmas album.

A Complete Unknown marks a return to the music biopic genre for director James Mangold, who previously helmed the Oscar-winning Walk the Line, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash, Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash and Robert Patrick as the T-1000, after he killed Johnny Cash’s father and took his place.

While Walk the Line was a critical and financial success, it was also painfully formulaic. And its structural triteness was...

New Johnny Cash Album ‘Songwriter’ Asks, What If the Man in Black Never Met Rick Rubin?
Image
On the cover of American Recordings, Johnny Cash’s stunning 1994 comeback album, the Man in Black stands squarely between Sin and Redemption — literally, since that’s what he named the black-and-white dogs that flank him as he glares into your soul. At the time, he also felt between sin and redemption metaphorically and the album was a leap of faith. The new archival compilation, Songwriter, which contains demos Cash recorded in 1993 mere months before American Recordings, presents an alternate history of the period when absolution still felt unattainable, and many...

Johnny Cash’s Unheard 1993 Album Songwriter Gets Release Date
Image
An unreleased Johnny Cash album will finally see the light of day, thanks to his son John Carter Cash and a team of world-class country musicians. Titled Songwriter, the project was recorded in 1993, and will be released on June 28th via Mercury Nashville/UMe.

Songwriter features 11 songs written solely by Cash over the course of his then-40-year-long career. He made the album at Lsi Studios in Nashville during a period when he was between contracts, and it ultimately ended up shelved until his son, John Carter, and producer David “Fergie” Ferguson sought to finish it with a group of musicians who played with Cash, including Marty Stuart, Pete Abbott, the late Dave Roe, and others.

Today, ahead of the album’s release, Cash’s estate shared the single “Well Alright,” a classic story-telling song with an even-more-classic country arrangement, even down to the tinny lead guitar, train-shuffle beat, and folksy,...

The Grammy winner took the stage under a lone spotlight as she delivered the cathartic lyrics: “If it’s too hard to admit/If it’s a memory that won’t quit/If it makes you want to cry all night long/Put it in the song.” The track’s rich melody and devastating chorus — “All the pain and all the hurt,...

Carlene Carter Embraces Beyoncé’s Entrance Into Country Music
Image
Carlene Carter issued a statement Friday welcoming Beyoncé to the family upon release of her new album, Cowboy Carter.

Carter is the daughter of country royalty in mother June Carter Cash, and is a star in her own right.

“I’ve caught wind of some negativity over the release of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, her new country album,” Carter said. “As a Carter Girl myself and coming from a long line of Carter Girls, I’m moved to ask why anyone would treat a Carter this way? She is an incredibly talented and creative woman who obviously wanted to do this because she likes country music, In my book, she’s one of us Carter women and we have always pushed the boundaries by trying whatever music we felt in our hearts and taking spirit-driven risks.”

The Carter family had some of the earliest country recordings, dating to the 1920s and Mother Maybelle Carter.

Reese Witherspoon movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
A New Orleans native who was raised in Tennessee, Reese Witherspoon is the very definition of good things coming in petite 5-foot-1 packages. She made her film debut at age 14 in 1991’s “The Man in the Moon,” a bittersweet Southern coming-of-age tale of first love and loss. From then on, she was pegged as a young actress to watch. She would soon gravitate towards edgier fare such as the underwhelming 1994 comedy “S.F.W.” and 1996’s “Freeway,” a rancid take on a Little Red Riding Hood on the run. She then scored a signature role as the rabidly ruthless high-school over-achiever Tracy Flick in 1999’s political satire “Election.” That was followed by her first major box-office hit, 2001’s “Legally Blonde,” as a perky Harvard student with a penchant for pink, feathered pens and cute Chihuahuas.

Ever since, Witherspoon has proven to be a incredibly likable and laudable presence on the big screen and,...

Lykke Li Releases Haunting Cover of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire”: Stream

Lykke Li has released a haunting cover of Johnny Cash’s classic song, “Ring of Fire.”

Li’s first new release since 2022’s Eyeye, the single arrives as part of the soundtrack for the new Netflix film, Damsel, due on March 8th. Speaking in a new interview with Variety, Li explained that she wanted to honor the song’s distinct vibe while leaning into its emotionality. In the end, a spur-of-the-moment performance spawned the sound she was looking for.

“I sat down at the piano and the first thing that came out of my mouth was what I recorded,” she said. “To be honest, the only version I’ve ever heard in my whole life is the Johnny Cash version, so I had no real history. I just went into it pretty blank… You can feel that energy on the recording, so it’s a very important process for me...

Johnny Cash in The Johnny Cash Show (1969)
‘I want her to be known as her own artist’: who was the real June Carter Cash?
Johnny Cash in The Johnny Cash Show (1969)
A new documentary aims to add depth to the story of the singer-songwriter who was often just referred to as the wife of Johnny Cash

Crazy was most famously sung by Patsy Cline but written by Willie Nelson. I Will Always Love You was most famously sung by Whitney Houston but written by Dolly Parton. Ring of Fire, a love song reeking of sulphur and damnation, took off when Johnny Cash sang it on his 1963 album Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash.

But it was written by his wife, June Carter Cash, a singer, songwriter, musician, actor and author who spent much of her career in his shadow. “I feel aggrieved on her behalf,” says Kristen Vaurio, 46, director of a new documentary, June, which shines a light on one of music’s hidden figures.

June Carter Cash
June review – country music legend who was much more than Johnny Cash’s wife
June Carter Cash
Documentary on June Carter Cash who was born into music royalty and a tough, funny trailblazer star – and the co-writer of Ring of Fire

The title is “June” – no surname. Which is surely director Kristen Vaurio making a point, since her documentary about June Carter Cash makes a convincing case that the country singer has for too long been under-appreciated and overshadowed by her husband Johnny. The stereotype of June is that she was the wifey-for-lifey who saved Cash from his demons, but the woman who emerges here is tough and funny, blazing a trail for herself as an artist. As Reese Witherspoon, who portrayed her in the movie Walk the Line, points out – still indignant – it was June who wrote Ring of Fire (with Merle Kilgore), one of Cash’s most famous songs.

Carter was born into country music royalty, the Carter family, and was touring by her teens.

Want to win Best Actress at the Oscars? Then play a real-life person
Image
Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress last year for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a dazzling fictional tale of a woman trying to save the multiverse. However, when we think of typical Best Actress winners, we do think of performers portraying real-life people. Sally Field in “Norma Rae” comes to mind, so, too, do Julia Roberts in “Erin Brockovich,” Sandra Bullock in “The Blind Side,” and Meryl Streep in “The Iron Lady.”

But is this an old-fashioned way of thinking? Or is it still a relevant metric with which to measure to potential Best Actress winners. Lily Gladstone portrays a real person in “Killers of the Flower Moon” but Emma Stone is the Oscar favorite for “Poor Things,” in which she plays a fictional character. So, let’s take a look a closer look at this category and what sort of roles Best Actress winners typically win for. Below is a...
