Am I Racist?, the controversial documentary that satirizes Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, failed to make the Oscar shortlist of nonfiction features today, despite earning more money at the box office than any other documentary this year, by far.
The film directed by Justin Folk features conservative author and podcaster Matt Walsh going undercover to infiltrate Dei seminars, dinners and the like. It scooped up more than $12 million at the domestic box office, but that wasn’t enough to sway the minds of Academy Documentary Branch members, who determine the shortlist (as well as the eventual five Oscar nominees).
Film participant Amanda Zurawksi and executive producer Hilary Clinton speak after the world premiere of ‘Zurawski v Texas’ at Telluride Film Festival
It may come as cold comfort to the Am I Racist? team, but films with an overt take on American politics were all spurned by the doc branch. Those include Zurawaski v Texas,...

Six directors of standout 2024 documentaries gathered in late November for THR’s annual Documentary Roundtable.
Two were veteran American documentary filmmakers: R.J. Cutler, who helmed Netflix’s Martha, a portrait of Martha Stewart that explores the price of pursuing perfection, and Disney’s Elton John: Never Too Late, which contrasts the rise to stardom with the farewell tour of the singer-songwriter (David Furnish co-directed the latter); and Matt Tyrnauer, director of Greenwich Films’ Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid, a profile of James Carville, the legendary Democratic strategist. Another was Swiss-born Ian Bonhôte, whose third doc, which he directed with Peter Ettedgui, is Warner Bros.’ Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, in which the life, work and tragic accident of the titular beloved movie star is examined 20 years after his death.
The other three were there on behalf of their first feature-length docs: Carla Gutiérrez, a veteran film editor, who helmed Amazon/MGM’s Frida,...

Exclusive: Director Matt Tyrnauer is doing a rapid update of his new documentary Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid to reflect Donald Trump’s win in the presidential election. Deadline has learned the filmmaker quickly assembled a crew to shoot a new interview with the famed Democratic political consultant to include as a coda to the film.
“The election wasn’t decided when we finished the film just a few weeks ago,” Tyrnauer explains. “We now know the outcome and I felt that I wanted to put a period at the end of the sentence.”
The recut version is now streaming on Max. “There was a reshuffling of a few elements that are almost invisible,” Tyrnauer says. “Then we give the outcome the election, and then James gives what is almost like his homily — or, battle cry is maybe a better term — which is we’re an opposition party… And that...

Prime Video took over a soundstage in Los Angeles Tuesday for its first live election special — but despite the expansive space and technology on display, the telecast’s opening hours didn’t feel much different than the multitude of other election night options.
Election Night Live began with anchor Brian Williams reciting a voiceover addressed to the founding fathers, noting what they established for the nation (along with the fact that many of them were slaveholders) while asking for “the strength and wisdom to see our way through this.”
The special originated from a Volume stage (the same kind of high-tech facility used on shows like The Mandalorian). Most of the time, a series of images from across the country was projected behind Williams, with a huge, swooping “Live News Alert” banner taking over the screens when there was a result to report.

Brian Williams is back on the news beat.
The former NBC News and MSNBC anchor is hosting Election Night Live, Prime Video’s first crack at live coverage of a breaking-news event. Originating from Amazon’s Culver City studio, the multi-hour, ad-supported special kicked off at 2 p.m. Pt — watch the cold open above and a trailer for the special below.
Recalling his stint as host of MSNBC’s The 11th Hour, Williams remains the jocular, sorta folksy wordsmith as he riffed about the sheer size of the studio — noting that people there are “getting their steps in — and revived catchphrases including how coverage will continue “on the other side” of a commercial break. At one point, he name-checked his former colleague, MSNBC’s Map Maven Steve Kornacki.

You could hear a pin drop at the Soho House Screening Room as outspoken political gadfly James Carville and filmmaker Matt Tyrnauer talked about their new movie, “Carville: Winning is Everything, Stupid.”
The film barely finished in time for the Telluride Film Festival, as Tyrnauer had to reshoot the entire ending after President Joseph Biden self-destructed at the first presidential debate. The documentary filmmakers at the packed screening were hanging on Carville’s words because he had predicted that if Biden stayed in the race, he would lose, which turned out to be prescient when he finally dropped out and his VP Kamala Harris took over. Carville knew Biden’s weakness from May polling data, and now the room wanted to know what he thought was happening in the week before the election.
But the film, picked up by CNN Films, rolled out late in terms of reaching election voters and awards voters.

Wow, November got here fast. This year’s election cycle seemed shorter than usual. The presidential candidates were all but a foregone conclusion, until they weren’t. Now with election season finally here, things continue to be tense. Are smooth transitions between administrations a thing of the past, or has the fever from last cycle broken?
Despite the strange reality we live in now, politics have always been fertile ground for nerve-fraying anxiety. Whether that’s the paranoia of being under the all-seeing eye of the Nsa today, the tragedy of the assassinations in the 60s, or the scandals of the 70s, politics have never been for the faint of heart. Struggles for power rarely are.

Turn on Amazon’s Prime Video on Election Night, and you will see the streaming giant do something it has never done before: live coverage of a breaking news event.
Brian Williams, the former NBC News and MSNBC anchor who will host Election Night Live, has described the special as the first “new product introduction in the Election Night space since color television.”
In an interview with Deadline, Williams wouldn’t go into specifics but promised a reveal of “our own exclusive IP.” A set built on a Culver City soundstage will be “all LED,” and he will be mobile “between different areas of the studio where analysts and journalists and a historian or two and our data folks are working.”

Channel 4 is gearing up for its first live U.S. election program in 32 years.
“There’s about a million moving parts,” Ian Rumsey, ITN’s managing director of content, tells The Hollywood Reporter about Tuesday’s overnight coverage. “And this election really matters, not just in the U.S., but in the U.K. and around the world.”
On Nov. 5, Democrat Kamala Harris will go head-to-head in the polls with Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump in what most analysts are agreeing is one of the tightest races in decades. The two trade the minimal less-than-a-point-lead in those key battleground states constantly, and Channel 4, partnering with CNN, sees it as ripe soil for an exhilarating live studio show.
Adult film actress Stormy Daniels, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen (who reportedly paid Daniels hush money to stay quiet about her affair with the businessman-turned-politician), ex-U.K. prime minister Boris Johnson...

There’s no shortage of conviction as James Carville scans the political landscape in the revealing documentary Carville: Winning is Everything, Stupid. Legendary Democratic strategist and commentator Carville fearlessly speaks his mind on the challenges facing his party as the 2024 election approaches.
Interweaving Carville’s analysis with moments from his storied career, director Matt Tyrnauer explores what makes this “Raging Cajun” tick while capturing a decisive time for American democracy.
A mastermind of President Clinton’s Watershed 1992 campaign, Carville understands the intricacies of electoral politics like few others. Yet his roots lie in a small Louisiana town, where memories of racial injustice still burn bright. Carville’s rise from humble beginnings makes his fierce determination all the more compelling. Through it all, an unlikely marriage to Republican consultant Mary Matalin has persisted against odds.
As the documentary progresses alongside election season, Carville’s doubts grow regarding Joe Biden’s candidacy.

Working for Saturday Night Live doesn’t exactly seem like the best job for someone who deals with severe anxiety. Even aside from the fact that it requires putting on a live show for millions of viewers, there’s also the intense competition, the sleepless writing sessions and Lorne Michaels’ legendary mind games.
But one of SNL’s all-time greats, Bill Hader, has been very candid about the fact that he struggles with anxiety, and even experienced panic attacks during sketches.
Hader once described how he clung to Vanessa Bayer’s arm during an on-air panic attack, and suffered a similar episode while impersonating Julian Assange in a 2010 sketch. According to Hader, he “started shaking” and kept trying to hide his face with a wine glass.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is generally credited for orchestrating President Joe Biden’s exit from the 2024 presidential race. But there was someone equally if not more responsible for that titanic political development: James Carville.

You take a major risk while trying to be as topical as possible when you make a documentary about a contemporary issue: The situation you originally set out to examine can change in heartbeat — too late for you to do much more than make a passing reference to that change in your movie’s final moments. Meanwhile, the audience already knows about that development before sitting down to watch what you’ve constructed.
Consider the case of “Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid,” a revealing and fascinating documentary portrait of James Carville, the Louisiana-born Democratic political operative whose uninhibited self-assurance, aggressive proselytizing and profanely funny pronouncements have earned him the nickname of “The Raging Cajun.”
For much of his film’s running time, director Matt Tyrnauer observes Carville as he follows with ever-increasing anxiety the 2024 Presidential race, fearing the worst as early polls indicate incumbent Joe Biden will be thumped by ex-President Donald Trump.

Theaters are brimming over with an army of well-reviewed and buzzy indie films. But, in an unusual state of affairs, pretty much all of them are in wide release, meaning Terrifier 3, Piece by Piece, Saturday Night and The Apprentice, as well as animated My Hero Academia: You’re Next. Limited openings are few — a trio of quality documentaries, A24’s We Live In Time, a couple of Academy runs and a faith-based Mormon film on Brigham Young’s ascendance. There also are a half-dozen Indian films in limited to moderate release.

America’s Burning sets an ambitious goal: to comprehensively examine the many fault lines splitting American society. Directed by David Smick, it draws on interviews with political strategists, historians, activists, and others to probe issues like economic inequality, polarization, and declining faith in democracy. However, while raising important points, it may leave some wishing for deeper dives into specific troubles and a broader range of viewpoints.
Smick draws our attention to serious issues like the hollowing out of the middle class and rising levels of animosity. Figures like political veteran James Carville and historian Niall Ferguson offer insight. But some topics that could each fill their own documentary, like the rise of toxic behavior online, are only brushed over. And though the analysts raise valid concerns, their views skew somewhat centrist. Broader representation may have offered counterpoints and shed more light.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed into law two bills supported by SAG-AFTRA granting individuals greater control over the use of their voice and likeness.
The Guild sponsored both bills and has been a leading Hollywood advocate of AI guardrails. It secured some measure of protections for performers during contract renewal negotiations with Hollywood studios, streamers and networks last year, following months-long strike action and fiery rhetoric from both sides.
Tuesday’s signing ceremony at SAG-AFTRA’s Los Angeles headquarters enacted Ab 2602, which requires informed consent by performers prior to specified use of digital replicas of their voice or likeness in place of actual services.

Adam Kinzinger had turned down more than a dozen requests to make a documentary. Then the director of Hot Tub Time Machine walked in.
The Illinois Republican congressman who famously — and largely solitarily — turned on Donald Trump after Jan. 6 was reluctant to participate in a movie that focused on his fading hopes to retain his seat. But Steve Pink, the aforesaid auteur of the jacuzzi, wanted to get more personal than that.
“Everyone else was interested in re-election,” Kinzinger said in an interview with THR as the Toronto International Film Festival was set to start Thursday. “But when I talked to Steve and the team their interest was in the human element — what’s the cost to you and your future kid?”
That conversation was more than two years ago. Now the resulting film, The Last Republican, could make an impact on more than just Kinzinger when it premieres at TIFF 2024 on Saturday.

In keeping with annual tradition, The Hollywood Reporter’s executive editor (awards) Scott Feinberg and senior editor (film) Rebecca Keegan huddled at the end of this year’s Telluride Film Festival to discuss their Labor Day weekend in the Rockies. Hillary Clinton encouraged a film festival audience in Telluride, Colorado, to “get back to a time when your government is not determining what your choices for your family would be, which is just so Handmaid’s Tale.”
Clinton was in Telluride on Saturday for the premiere of Zurawski v Texas, a documentary she produced about a group of women who sued the state of Texas in 2023 after they were denied abortions when their health was at risk. The film, which was directed by Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault and is seeking distribution, screened to a sold-out and often sobbing audience at the festival’s 650-seat Palm Theater.

There is one problem with the lively new James Carville documentary, Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid, premiering at Telluride: For much of the film, Carville worries about the dangers of having Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate.
Obviously, the movie (which was acquired by CNN Films) was conceived and filmed before Biden dropped out of the race. During the last year, long before the June debate with Trump, Carville was deeply concerned that Biden’s presence on the ballot could cost the Democrats the election. That all changed on July 21st, when Biden dropped out. But by then, the film was close to completion. A brief end title reports the news of Harris’ ascension, yet the film still seems skewed.
Nevertheless, it provides some great background on Carville and certainly convinces us that he is one of the most colorful figures on the scene today — and still making noise.

Matt Tyrnauer’s Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid, one of the buzziest documentaries set to premiere at this weekend’s Telluride Film Festival, has been acquired by CNN Films for television and SVOD. The 51st Telluride Film Festival gets underway Friday with a number of world and North American premieres highlighting an impressive lineup of movies, many of them Oscar hopefuls. Telluride keeps its selections close to vest and only just announced the entire lineup Thursday morning as much of the industry is on a plane heading to the mountains, though pundits pretty much already had figured out the lineup. Bill Maher has realized he’s behind on current internet slang, namely “Brat Summer,” after being on a month-long hiatus from Real Time.
While chatting with CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins on Friday’s episode, the host attempted to understand the viral phenomenon — which started after Charli Xcx dropped her latest studio album titled Brat in June — that’s taken over social media in recent months.
“What do you think about this? Somehow, Kamala got to be ‘brat,’” Maher asked Collins, to which she joked, “Are you jealous?”
After Maher clarified that he’s “not” jealous, he proceeded to ask his guest if she thought it was a “smart move” for Kamala Harris’ campaign to embrace the label — one that he’s clearly confused by — which has inspired TikTok dances, memes and fashion trends.

George Clooney has endorsed Kamala Harris’ presidential bid, while offering praise to President Joe Biden for “saving democracy once again.”
In a statement, Clooney said, “President Biden has shown what true leadership is. He’s saving democracy once again. We’re all so excited to do whatever we can to support Vice President Harris in her historic quest.”
Clooney published an op ed earlier this month calling on Biden to drop out of the race, citing the president’s debate performance as well as an appearance at a fundraiser in Los Angeles on June 15. Clooney was one of the co-hosts of the event.

Exclusive: Abramorama has acquired North American theatrical distribution rights to the Michael Douglas-narrated documentary America’s Burning, directed by bestselling writer David Smick and produced by Ian Michaels. The film will hit theaters July 12.
America’s Burning follows the U.S. economy’s journey over time as the country has been a massive wealth-creating machine, but only half of the country has access to the markets. Capitalism has, as James Carville put it, become “a racket” — the ultimate corporate insider’s club, a system centrally controlled by the well-connected few. The middle class is shrinking, and the American Dream’s promise of social mobility for all who work hard is dying. However, America has an impressive history of resilience, and the film shows why our best days could still lie ahead. Watch a trailer below.

Rob Reiner has shared the first trailer for his upcoming documentary taking on the rise of Christian nationalism.
In God & Country, religious leaders and scholars, journalists and historians sound off about the threat of a movement that infuses Christian dogma with far-right politics. At the same time, the documentary seems to strive to make a distinction between the positive aspects of Christianity and the political-fueled variety.
“Christian Nationalism is not only a danger to our Country, it’s a danger to Christianity itself,” tweeted Reiner (A Few Good Men), who is a producer on the project and whose trailer (below) got him trending on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Friday.
The trailer mixes footage of right-wing marches and the riots of Jan. 6 with various interviews. “This is not a movement about Christian values, this is about Christian power,” says one interviewee, while another notes, “Christianity at its best is...

“Writing,” Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, screenwriter, and director David Mamet told Bill Maher on Friday’s Real Time, “is just making shit up.”
Mamet has made a successful career of that, creating such plays as Glengarry Glen Ross and Speed-the-Plow, and writing/directing such films as Heist, Wag the Dog and Hannibal, among others.
Now, he’s out with his newest book, a memoir and history called Everywhere an Oink Oink: An Embittered, Dyspeptic, and Accurate Report of Forty Years in Hollywood.
As one might expect from the title, it is loaded with caustic opinions on “the industry,” a term the abrasive Mamet loathes.
Maher brought up an anecdote where Mamet was once speaking to a class. One of the college students asked him, “What is the best thing I can do to increase my chances of working in television?”
Mamet had a ready solution. “Cut your d**k off and eat it.

Spoiler Alert: This article includes details of Sunday’s series finale of Showtime’s docuseries The Circus.
Showtime’s The Circus launched eight years ago with a title that suggested politics infused with a bit of crazy spectacle, but it ended tonight with anxiety, angst and even a sense of dread for what’s ahead.
The docuseries wrapped up after an eventful week: Donald Trump testifying in his civil trial, off-year elections that saw some unexpected Democratic wins and a Republican debate that may ultimately prove to be irrelevant.
But what stood out in the episode were a series of interviews from figures across the political spectrum, which has refracted quite a bit since The Circus debuted. The finale reflected the precarious state of politics, driven largely by the rise and endurance of Donald Trump and the reaction against him and his movement.

Former President Bill Clinton is launching a second season of his iHeart podcast Why Am I Telling You This? on Thursday, with singer-songwriter Jason Isbell as his first guest.
Among the topics in their wide-ranging conversation is that of Covid vaccine deniers and the challenge of changing their minds about taking the shots.
Isbell has been adamant about having a set of Covid protocols at his concerts that include proof of vaccinations or recent negative tests, something that drew scorn from some of his fans, with some performances canceled, yet praise from others.
In the new episode, which posted at midnight on Thursday, Isbell tells Clinton that performing with vaccine protocols in place “helps me do my job and be happy when I’m on stage and not be concerned and not be worried about people’s safety or about the kind of audience that I have, I just want...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains details of this morning’s Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony live on NBC.
A Chinese-hosted Winter Olympics in the Year of the Tiger should have been roaring. Instead, this morning’s Opening Ceremony alternated between boring and brutal.
Officially starting off with a solemn countdown video linking the Beijing Games and the recently launched Lunar New Year festival, the tone of spring rebirth, propaganda and imperial heritage was firmly established. While there were a few moments of beauty and grace, the privileged post given the goose-stepping People’s Liberation Army early on in the opening ceremony said it all.
It was a high-definition LED and fireworks-propelled troika of themes that remained mind-numbingly consistent amidst heightened international tensions and Chinese domestic repression. No wonder Vladimir Putin looked to be asleep in the stands at one point.
Pandemic or not, the historic return to Beijing’s Bird Nest stadium...

Brian Williams didn’t go gentle into that good night.
In a noticeable break from the journalistic demeanor he has projected for nearly three decades at NBC News and MSNBC, the veteran anchor used the final minutes of his tenure on MSNBC’s “11th Hour” to warn viewers of the frailty of American democracy and urged them to keep it safe — if they could.
“My biggest worry is for my country. I’m not a liberal or a conservative. I’m an institutionalist,” he told viewers as the clock neared midnight on the east coast and his five-year term on the show came to a close. “I believe in this place and in my love of country. I yield to no one, but the darkness at the edge of town has spread to the main roads and highways and neighborhoods. It’s now at the local bar and the bowling alley,...
