Gilmore Girls had a little of everything. It had comedy, drama, romance. Gilmore Girls even introduced the band Hep Alien. Sebastian Bach played Gil, the band’s guitarist. John Cabrera played bassist Brian Fuller, but that’s not the role in which Cabrera originally thought Gilmore Girls would cast him.

It's quite a feat to stand out in an immense cast of talented young men in HBO's "The Pacific," but newcomer Rami Malek did just that as real-life Louisiana Pfc. Merriell "Snafu" Shelton. In the 10-part miniseries, which ends May 16, Malek steals the show with his authentic portrayal of a lost soldier faced with the brutality of war. Malek plays the kind of morally ambiguous soldier who looks after his fellow Marines as easily as he tosses pebbles into a corpse's hollowed head. It earned him major respect from his boss, executive producer Tom Hanks."I remember when I came home from 'The Pacific,' he gave me a hug and he said, 'I can't wait until I'm in a movie with you.' I was laughing and I was astonished, and when he said that, I was like, 'Yeah, we'll see if that ever happens,' " Malek says...

Reality-check time: As Los Angeles acting teacher Doug Warhit reminds us, most pilots don't go beyond the pilot stage. Of those that do, most are canceled within the first four weeks. So there's no need to get your knickers in a twist. As with any other audition, focus on the work."If you're getting an opportunity to read for a pilot, you must already have strong acting chops," says Warhit, author of "The Actor's Audition Checklist" and other books. Consider this an opportunity to do what you do best: act.But bear in mind, a pilot audition is slightly different from an ordinary TV audition. For one thing, you can't watch the show to get a sense of its style and tone. You need to do a different kind of homework. "You have the breakdown and the script—it's not a big mystery," says actor and former casting director Mara Casey.

Casting director Jami Rudofsky has one word of advice for the auditioning actor: relax. "Don't be nervous," she says with a laugh. "I'm a totally regular person. I'm there to help you get the job." Rudofsky can also empathize with the jittery performers sitting across from her: She was once an aspiring actor, studying theatre at UCLA. "About halfway through, I realized that it wasn't the path I wanted to take," she says. "I didn't like auditioning. I knew I wasn't going to be successful as an actress, but I really loved acting, so I wanted to find something that was like it." An internship with CD Vicki Rosenberg (Bones, Joan of Arcadia) set Rudofsky on a new career track. She fell in love with the casting process, started working in the industry the day after graduation, and hasn't looked back. These days she has nearly a decade and a half of casting experience,...
