“Hacks,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Black Cake” and Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” were among the big winners on Thursday as Humanitas revealed its 2024 Humanitas Prize recipients. The ceremony, held at Avalon Hollywood, revealed honors in nine juried categories, including TV, film and documentary fields.

“We actually got something friends,” “Origin” filmmaker Ava DuVernay said in accepting the award for drama feature — which had been previously snubbed through last year’s Oscars season. “We went through that whole awards gauntlet, and then this popped up in the summer, and I thought, ‘wow, they’re kind of off kilter for the award season!’ Because they don’t care about that… they’re doing something different. This award show that is about doing something with this medium that matters. Yes, entertainment matters, but we have such a powerful voice, such a powerful platform. So I commend everyone that’s trying to say something.”

Humanitas has announced nominations for the 2024 Humanitas Prize in nine juried categories, including TV, film and documentary fields. Noms in the comedy field include “Hacks,” “The Simpsons,” “Girls5eva” and “Act Your Age,” while drama entrants include “The Crown,” “The Morning Show,” “Station 19” and “Black Cake.”

In 1972, an Uruguay rugby team takes off in two engine prop plane to fiy from Montevideo in Uruguay to Santiago, Chile. While over the Andes mountains in western Argentina, the inexperienced pilot reads his instruments wrong and hits a mountain ridge, shearing the wings and tail off. The fuselage with the passengers then slid down a glacier to rest in a snowy expanse in the middle of Andes nowhere. Of the 45 passengers and crew aboard, 12 died immediately and several others succumbed thereafter in the harsh conditions. It came down to 16 souls. They survived 60 days before two of them climbed a mountain to rescuers.

Premiering at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, Society of the Snow is Director J.A. Bayona’s take on the story of the infamous 1972 Uruguayan Air Force flight that crashed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes Mountains. Chartering a rugby team to Chile, only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash. Finding themselves in one of the world’s toughest environments, they are forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.

Based on the book “La Sociedad de la Nieve” by Pablo Vierci, the film utilizes Vierci’s strong ties to the remaining survivors of the crash, many of whom he knew from childhood. The filmmakers recorded more than 100 hours of interviews with all of the living survivors and the actors had access to them & their families as well.

With a reported budget of around 60-70 million, Bayona spared no expense to bring the highest level of authenticity to the project.

The lore of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which fell out of the sky and crashed into the South American Andes in 1972, typically summons grisly images of cannibalism and gangrene. The 72 days that a Uruguayan rugby team en route to Chile endured, snow-drifted and hungry, have been dramatized elsewhere, including the 1993 survival drama “Alive,” starring a mostly white and Anglicized cast. Now, after a moment under the tentpole sun with the ill-conceived “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona returns to the style of more personal and human disasters with “Society of the Snow.” Shot in Spanish with Uruguayan accents, this muscular and often brutal depiction is chiseled with authenticity, but it’s too psychologically schematic to make much in the way of an emotional impact.

Netflix has dropped a teaser for J.A. Bayona’s highly anticipated survival thriller “Society of the Snow,” which will represent Spain in the Oscars international feature film race. The film world premiered on closing night of the Venice Film Festival and is playing this week at the Lumiere Film Festival in Lyon.

Venice International Film Festival has announced which film will be closing the event in September.

La Sociedad de la nieve (‘Society of the Snow’), a story of survival in extreme conditions, will be screened on Saturday 9 September in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema at the Lido di Venezia – the screening to be held after the Festival’s awards are handed out.

The film is directed by J.A. Bayona and tells the story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 which, in 1972, had been chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, and crashed in the heart of the Andes.

Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they had to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.

The cast of the film includes Enzo Vogrincic, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Esteban Kukuriczka and Tomas Wolf.

The Venice Film Festival will close with the world premiere of J. A. Bayona’s Netflix survival thriller La Sociedad De La Nieve (Society Of The Snow).

The latest film from The Orphanage and The Impossible director charts the iconic true story of a 1970s rugby team whose plane crashes on a glacier in the Andes. Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Intruders has perhaps one twist too many. Actually, it has a couple of twists piled on top of one central twist concerning two children in different countries being menaced by what seems to be a supernatural presence. Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques' screenplay does something strange by the end: it actually removes the stakes of everything that came before with its trio of revelations that at first test and then demolish any credulity the movie had built up by that point. There is a disappointing thought that emerges after watching Intruders: that is it? The script from Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques sets up a fairly limp fish, which is mediocre through the second and third acts. The acting from Clive Owen and Carice van Houten is much better than the script. However, the film is hampered by a partially fleshed out story that is mostly lacking in terror. Casariego and Marques do manage to create some interest with their dual storytelling style. The film begins with Juan (Izán Corchero) and a mysterious figure. This figure wants to steal Juan's face as he feels he has no identity of his own.

The horror genre is primarily about facing ones fears, even if those manifestations are the faceless shapes of masked murderers or deformed nightmares. Jason, Freddy, and Mike Myers all represent a frightening idea and, in the movies, they prey on those that fear them the most.

In Intruders, the antagonist is a hooded menace called Hollowface, a generic Grim Reaper phantasm that lurks in the shadows and slinks through open windows to steal the faces of children. For anyone ten and under, Hollowface is the bogeyman. The closet creature that preys on those foolish few who believe in and, more importantly, fear him. However, by limiting Hollowface’s targets, the danger is similarly inhibited, and it may be difficult for adults to feel afraid of this latest thing that goes bump in the night.

Despite the kid-centered fears, the primary perspective is that of John Farrow (Clive Owen), a middle-aged construction engineer in London.

How do you make the most of a ghost story in the age of post-meta horror films? If you're Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, you run with the idea of a fairy tale until you've copied and pasted so many tropes that "Intruders" emerges as a messy puddle.

Pint-sized author Juan (Izán Corecho) is reading his latest horror story to his mother (Pilar López de Ayala) before she tucks him in, chiding him that his story has no ending, a helpful bit of foreshadowing. Juan climbs out onto a scaffold to find his cat when a cloaked figure seems to slide up to building and into his window. Inside, Juan's mother is choked by the creature until he intervenes and escapes back out the window with the specter on his heels. After a short walk off an even shorter platform, the figure falls over and Juan is left crying in his mother's arms.

Intruders is about two children living in different countries are visited nightly by a faceless being who wants to take possession of them. In the clip for Intruders a school girls tells us about a monster that has no face and needs a face to steal so he will have one. Filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) helms this movie. The trailer that recently released shows that Mia is an aspiring writer. Her voice over makes for an interesting set up which creates a potentially sinister tone for the film. Her British accent helps add to the ambience, and hopefully this movie will not be another Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. This film seems to have influences from M. Night Shyamalan's Signs as well.

Thankfully the MPAA rating of R is the right step for at least suggesting the chills are indeed...
