The 10 Most Underrated Movies Of 2024, Ranked
Image
There's no such thing as a "bad" year for movies -- not if you watch enough of them. That statement might come across like a hackneyed cliché every time film fans trot that out and lob it into the ether like a self-righteous grenade ... but it's still true!

Okay, we won't put lipstick on a pig: the state of the industry these days feels, to put a fine point on it, dire. Blockbusters have bullied out smaller and more original offerings on their way to ruling the roost, though even that's no guarantee anymore with the way budgets keep skyrocketing. Streaming platforms have become a last, desperate haven for passion projects from our best and brightest filmmakers ... but that only makes it easier for the Powers That Be to take movies like Clint Eastwood's "Juror #2" and sentence them to a digital death penalty. And unless they're dealing with names like Christopher Nolan,...

Image
“Hacks,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Black Cake” and Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” were among the big winners on Thursday as Humanitas revealed its 2024 Humanitas Prize recipients. The ceremony, held at Avalon Hollywood, revealed honors in nine juried categories, including TV, film and documentary fields.

“We actually got something friends,” “Origin” filmmaker Ava DuVernay said in accepting the award for drama feature — which had been previously snubbed through last year’s Oscars season. “We went through that whole awards gauntlet, and then this popped up in the summer, and I thought, ‘wow, they’re kind of off kilter for the award season!’ Because they don’t care about that… they’re doing something different. This award show that is about doing something with this medium that matters. Yes, entertainment matters, but we have such a powerful voice, such a powerful platform. So I commend everyone that’s trying to say something.”

Max’s “Hacks” Season 3 episode “Yes,...

On-Air Film Review: Staying Alive in ‘Society of the Snow’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on January 4th, 2023, reviewing “Society of the Snow,” the third film version of one of the great survival stories in history, as it occurred in the Andes Mountain. Currently on Netflix.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

In 1972, an Uruguay rugby team takes off in two engine prop plane to fiy from Montevideo in Uruguay to Santiago, Chile. While over the Andes mountains in western Argentina, the inexperienced pilot reads his instruments wrong and hits a mountain ridge, shearing the wings and tail off. The fuselage with the passengers then slid down a glacier to rest in a snowy expanse in the middle of Andes nowhere. Of the 45 passengers and crew aboard, 12 died immediately and several others succumbed thereafter in the harsh conditions. It came down to 16 souls. They survived 60 days before two of them climbed a mountain to rescuers.

‘Society of the Snow’ Movie Review: Should You Watch on Netflix?
Image
Picture: Netflix

Premiering at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, Society of the Snow is Director J.A. Bayona’s take on the story of the infamous 1972 Uruguayan Air Force flight that crashed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes Mountains. Chartering a rugby team to Chile, only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash. Finding themselves in one of the world’s toughest environments, they are forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.

Based on the book “La Sociedad de la Nieve” by Pablo Vierci, the film utilizes Vierci’s strong ties to the remaining survivors of the crash, many of whom he knew from childhood. The filmmakers recorded more than 100 hours of interviews with all of the living survivors and the actors had access to them & their families as well.

With a reported budget of around 60-70 million, Bayona spared no expense to bring the highest level of authenticity to the project.

‘Society of the Snow’ Review: J. A. Bayona’s Disaster Drama Is as Harrowing as the Uruguayan Plane Crash That Inspired It
Image
The lore of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which fell out of the sky and crashed into the South American Andes in 1972, typically summons grisly images of cannibalism and gangrene. The 72 days that a Uruguayan rugby team en route to Chile endured, snow-drifted and hungry, have been dramatized elsewhere, including the 1993 survival drama “Alive,” starring a mostly white and Anglicized cast. Now, after a moment under the tentpole sun with the ill-conceived “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona returns to the style of more personal and human disasters with “Society of the Snow.” Shot in Spanish with Uruguayan accents, this muscular and often brutal depiction is chiseled with authenticity, but it’s too psychologically schematic to make much in the way of an emotional impact.

That’s not to say Bayona and his team haven’t devised some seriously impressive filmmaking: “Society of the Snow” was filmed in Spain...

‘Society of the Snow’ Trailer: Spain’s International Oscar Entry Tells the ‘Alive’ Story from New Perspective
Image
Director J.A. Bayona makes his screenwriting debut with Spanish film “Society of the Snow,” based on the devastating true story of an Uruguayan rugby team that was stranded in the wilderness for months after a harrowing plane crash. The story behind the plane crash was previously dramatized in Frank Marshall’s 1993 narrative feature “Alive,” which starred Ethan Hawke.

The Netflix film, which Spain has already chosen as its entry for this year’s Best International Film Oscar, follows the passengers of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, who were on their way to Chile before crashing in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the initial accident; the survivors were then trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, and had to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.

Oscars: Spain Selects J.A. Bayona’s Netflix Drama ‘Society Of The Snow’ For Best International Film Race
Image
Spain has selected J.A. Bayona’s latest film, Society of the Snow, which debuted last month at the Venice Film Festival, as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2024 Oscars.

The announcement marks the first time a Netflix-backed film has been selected by Spain and the second time J.A. Bayona has made the cut following his 2007 film The Orphanage.

Society of the Snow closed this year’s Venice Film Festival. Based on the book of the same name by Pablo Vierci, first published in 2008, the film charts the story of the 45 people who, on October 13, 1972, boarded Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 from Montevideo to Chile. There were five crew members on board and 40 passengers, including 19 members of the Old Christians Club rugby team. Tragedy struck when the pilot began his descent too early, crashing into the Andes and killing 12 immediately. The survivors clung to the belief that help was coming,...

‘Society of the Snow’ Review: J.A. Bayona Blends Visceral Action With Existential Despair in Overlong but Affecting Survival Thriller
Image
The 1972 disaster in which Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 went down in a remote part of the Andes while carrying a rugby team, their friends and family members to a match in Chile has been the subject of numerous books, documentaries and two dramatic features — the 1976 Mexploitation quickie, Survive!, which fell short of its exclamation point; and Frank Marshall’s 1993 Hollywood version, Alive, a middling entry in Ethan Hawke’s early screen career.

While it’s a fictionalized, gender-switched reinvention only loosely inspired by Flight 571, Showtime’s Yellowjackets has paradoxically made a bigger cultural splash than either of those films, with its genre mashup of horror, mystery and mordant humor.

Spanish director J.A. Bayona, who established his disaster/survival movie bona fides with the tsunami thriller The Impossible, now weighs in with the Netflix feature, Society of the Snow (La Sociedad de la Nieve), reclaiming the real-life tragedy and story of human resilience — and,...

‘Society Of The Snow’ Review: J.A. Bayona’s Thrilling Account Of 1972 Uruguayan Rugby Team Airplane Crash Closes Venice Film Festival
Image
The story of the harrowing 1972 crash of the airplane carrying members of the Uruguay Rugby team in the remote snowy mountains of Argentina has been told cinematically a few times before. There was a rather crass version released in America as Survive! in 1976, and later a notable take on the story from director Frank Marshall called Alive through Disney Studios and starring Ethan Hawke and others in 1993.

But now with Netflix’s Society of the Snow, director J.A. Bayona, who has previously found compelling stories depicting the will to survive in unspeakable human disasters, has made his own version of events of the half-century old story. The director of the 2012 The Impossible about tourists and locals caught in a killer tsunami in Thailand has taken a different approach here and based this stunning account on Pablo Vierci’s novel about it that was written 36 years after the actual crash. Bayona...

Society of the Snow Trailer Reveals Rugby Team's Desperate Battle for Survival
Image
Society of the Snow is a true-story adaptation inspired by the 1972 Andes Mountains plane crash, focusing on the survivors' battle for existence. The teaser trailer for the film emphasizes the human element of the story and the passengers' struggle for survival in harsh conditions. Director J.A. Bayona aims to create a powerful and optimistic experience that showcases the strength and resilience of human beings when faced with adversity.

Yellowjackets (2021)
Move over “Yellowjackets,” there’s a new survival thriller involving a plane crash and cannibalism in the works. THR reports today that J.A. The true events that the survival thriller will be based on puts the emphasis on “extreme measures.” The chartered Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed into the Andes mountains on October 13, 1972 and resulted in grisly deaths and injuries. Blu-ray Review: Keep Intruders Out of Your Home
Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Intruders has perhaps one twist too many. Actually, it has a couple of twists piled on top of one central twist concerning two children in different countries being menaced by what seems to be a supernatural presence. Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques' screenplay does something strange by the end: it actually removes the stakes of everything that came before with its trio of revelations that at first test and then demolish any credulity the movie had built up by that point. I'll try not to spoil Intruders, although it takes a while before Fresnadillo's film takes any kind of shape that's worth describing. We're initially introduced to Juan (Izán Corchero) a young Spanish boy who, on one rainy night, comes under...

Intruders and Missing the Mark: A Movie Review
*full disclosure: a Blu-Ray screener of this film was provided by Millenium Entertainment. **here be some minor spoilers. Director: Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Writers: Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques. Cast: Clive Owen, Carice van Houten, Daniel Brühl, Pilar López de Ayala and Ella Purnell. There is a disappointing thought that emerges after watching Intruders: that is it? The script from Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques sets up a fairly limp fish, which is mediocre through the second and third acts. The acting from Clive Owen and Carice van Houten is much better than the script. However, the film is hampered by a partially fleshed out story that is mostly lacking in terror. Casariego and Marques do manage to create some interest with their dual storytelling style. The film begins with Juan (Izán Corchero) and a mysterious figure. This figure wants to steal Juan's face as he feels he has no identity of his own.

SXSW: Intruders
The horror genre is primarily about facing ones fears, even if those manifestations are the faceless shapes of masked murderers or deformed nightmares. Jason, Freddy, and Mike Myers all represent a frightening idea and, in the movies, they prey on those that fear them the most.

In Intruders, the antagonist is a hooded menace called Hollowface, a generic Grim Reaper phantasm that lurks in the shadows and slinks through open windows to steal the faces of children. For anyone ten and under, Hollowface is the bogeyman. The closet creature that preys on those foolish few who believe in and, more importantly, fear him. However, by limiting Hollowface’s targets, the danger is similarly inhibited, and it may be difficult for adults to feel afraid of this latest thing that goes bump in the night.

Despite the kid-centered fears, the primary perspective is that of John Farrow (Clive Owen), a middle-aged construction engineer in London.

SXSW '12 Review: 'Intruders' A Mish-Mash Of Horror Tropes In An Undercooked Procedural
How do you make the most of a ghost story in the age of post-meta horror films? If you're Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, you run with the idea of a fairy tale until you've copied and pasted so many tropes that "Intruders" emerges as a messy puddle.

Pint-sized author Juan (Izán Corecho) is reading his latest horror story to his mother (Pilar López de Ayala) before she tucks him in, chiding him that his story has no ending, a helpful bit of foreshadowing. Juan climbs out onto a scaffold to find his cat when a cloaked figure seems to slide up to building and into his window. Inside, Juan's mother is choked by the creature until he intervenes and escapes back out the window with the specter on his heels. After a short walk off an even shorter platform, the figure falls over and Juan is left crying in his mother's arms.

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Intruders to Play at SXSW '12 and Distribution News
Faceless minions are not what the movie Intruders is about. Instead, it is about a supernatural force bent on possessing two children who live quite literally worlds apart. This dark shadowy entity is after 13-year old Mia (Ella Purnell) and her father, John Farrow (Clive Owen), can do very little to help save her ... or can he?

Filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) helms this movie. The trailer that recently released shows that Mia is an aspiring writer. Her voice over makes for an interesting set up which creates a potentially sinister tone for the film. Her British accent helps add to the ambience, and hopefully this movie will not be another Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. This film seems to have influences from M. Night Shyamalan's Signs as well.

Thankfully the MPAA rating of R is the right step for at least suggesting the chills are indeed...

Watch: Clive Owen Searches For Hollow Face In New Trailer For 'Intruders'
When Juan Carlos Fresnadillo burst onto the scene with his Spanish-language feature “Intacto” in 2001, many took notice, including director Danny Boyle who would pass the torch of the undead along to the young helmer for the second installment of the “28 Days Later” franchise. Paying respects to Boyle’s work, while also acting as a perfectly capable standalone film, 2007’s “28 Weeks Later” surpassed many audience’s expectations. With so much momentum in his career, it was odd to watch the hype surrounding Fresnadillo dissipate, and that was certainly not helped by Bradley Cooper-starring remake of “The Crow” stalling before it ever really got off the ground. But never fear, Fresnadillo is back with “Intruders,” starring Clive Owen, Carice Van Houten, and Daniel Bruhl in what is seemingly an update of the boogeyman mythos. With a script by Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques,...
