Biography

In a March 2017 interview on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition Sunday, Jay Chandrasekhar said that it was not until he was 25 years old that he learned that his middle name, "Jambulingam," literally means "large penis." He only learned it when he was watching his own first short film with an Indian friend and his friend's mother, and when his full credit came on the screen, the friend's mother started laughing--and then told him why. Chandrasekhar then called his own mother to ask whether it was true. "And she goes, well, yeah, literally, sure. But it's meant to be a euphemism for power. And I said, you know, Mom, I mean, all these years growing up an Indian kid, it would have been helpful to have known that.".
