If it had been released just two years ago, “Bonhoeffer” might have come across as simply the latest in a long line of respectable but predictable period dramas about brave Germans who dared to stand up to the Nazi regime. Today, however, the movie feels more like an uncomfortably timely cautionary tale with unsettling echoes of current events.
Not just because it reminds us that, in the late 1930s, Hitler’s sympathizers distributed a Nazified version of the Bible that depicted Jesus as a pure-bred Aryan — and demanded loyalty to Der Fuhrer in one of two extra commandments added to the original text. (Sales were huge.) Written and directed by Todd Komarnicki, a filmmaker arguably known best as the scripter for “Sully” from Clint Eastwood (who gets a special thanks shout-out in the closing credits hwew), “Bonhoeffer” illustrates the relative ease with which Hitler gained the acceptance and eventual fealty...

"We are determined to persevere till the very end." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a new history documentary series called Churchill at War, streaming in December on Netflix. While this sounds like another History Channel presentation, it's actually a bit more complex and engaging. This fascinating 4-part series examines Winston Churchill's pivotal role in World War II and the formative events that made him an ideal leader for the era. Brought to life with his own words, the series explores Churchill's wartime strategy and the legacy that follows. It's executive produced by filmmakers Ron Howard & Brian Grazer by their company Imagine Documentaries, which has been making tons of interesting docs. Of course, most people know about Churchill already and he's a character in many movies, but this one dives even deeper into his WWII legacy. The big difference in this doc is that it features recreation scenes,...

Historical dramas — in particular those centered on fearless feats of resistance against authoritarian regimes — often seek to be warnings. The oft-quoted Winston Churchill line — “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it” — may ring simply too facile. Yet in watching a film like Jiří Mádl’s handsomely mounted period drama “Waves,” one cannot help but see in its story, and in the history it’s retelling, an urgent plea about the pressing need for a free press. But within its thriller-like trappings is also a complicated meditation on how such a demand rests on the shoulders of men and women who are human, and therefore fallible.
“Waves” opens with an unequivocal historical truth: “The Soviet Union keeps Eastern European countries under its control,” a voice informs viewers as images of Joseph Stalin, the U.S.S.R. and the aforementioned countries and peoples (including those of...

“The Diplomat” Season 2 is the bastard lovechild of “The West Wing,” Armando Iannucci’s British political satires and his American “Veep.” Whip-smart, psychologically insightful and sexy without sleaze, the series created by Debora Cahn is only getting better as it speeds into its second lap on Netflix this Halloween. The streamer has already greenlit a third season, signaling an awareness of the show’s quality and that audiences are tuning in.
Season 1 left the idealistic Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) hanging by a thread or, actually, a lit fuse. Her rickety marriage to master gamesman and former Ambassador Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) was unraveling. The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till 2021). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.)
The award for Best Makeup was introduced in 1981, following an outcry over the lack of recognition for Christopher Tucker‘s groundbreaking work on “The Elephant Man” (1980). Hairstylists began sharing the award with makeup artists in 1993 when “Mrs. Doubtfire” won.

If you’ve ever wondered if celebrities truly love the limelight or if they’re just like us—hopelessly tangled in their knots of absurd drama? Well, you’re about to find out. As Winston Churchill once poetically stated, “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on”, and this seems all too fitting when unraveling the latest headlines involving Liam Payne and his ex-girlfriend Maya Henry. What’s the buzz about?

Let’s face it, Henry’s recent jaw-dropping claims have cast a long shadow over the former One Direction star. Is Payne’s career about to hit a brick wall in response to his ex-girlfriend’s allegations, or is there room to turn over a new leaf?

Principal photography has wrapped on “Think of England,” a satirical WWII drama from BAFTA-nominated writer/director Richard Hawkins.
The newly-announced film is set in the run up to the Allied invasion of France, when two British film projects are commission at the very highest level. For one, Winston Churchill himself insists that Laurence Olivier immediately embark upon a lavish production of Shakespeare’s “Henry V,” securing for him a state-of-the-art, 3-strip Technicolour camera and all of the available film stock.

A quarter century after winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Girl, Interrupted,” Angelina Jolie is hoping to pick up the Best Actress trophy for her performance in “Maria.” In terms of Oscar history, she’d join Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange, Cate Blanchett, and Renée Zellweger, who all won for featured performances before prevailing again for star turns.
Jolie’s role, that of real-life opera singer Maria Callas, has already been proven to be awards-worthy and won Jane Seymour an Emmy nearly four decades ago. This English rose featured in the 1988 TV movie “Onassis: The Richest Man in the World,” opposite Raul Julia as Aristotle Onassis and Anthony Quinn as his father, Socrates. This remains her only Emmy win from five nominations.

Among all the elements in Oppenheimer, Gary Oldman’s role as the 33rd US President was a huge surprise for the fans. The Harry Potter star’s appearance as the late Harry S. It was Adolf Hitler’s name that became synonymous with evil, but his Italian counterpart — Benito Mussolini, named for a Mexican revolutionary leader by his staunchly Socialist father — was arguably the more enduring brand. Any populist politician today owes a good deal to the Mussolini playbook, brought to explosive life in an extraordinary Italian-language series by British director Joe Wright.
M. Son of the Century sticks to the facts of the great dictator’s life, which are extraordinary enough, but stretches those facts into surreal shapes until we feel we’re in some parallel historical universe. Wright’s brassy style — unlike anything he has done before — owes something to Fellini, but a whole lot more to its subject. Because Benito Mussolini, apart from anything else, definitely knew how to put on a show.

You might be surprised to learn that the slang term quisling which means a traitor who collaborates with an enemy force occupying their country is taken from Vidkun Quisling — a Norwegian fascist and Nazi collaborator who served as the Minister President of Norway from 1942 to 1945 in a Nazi puppet state. It was Winston Churchill who immortalized the term. Unafraid to confront the painful chapters of his nation’s history, veteran Norwegian filmmaker Erik Poppe shines a light on the why — how did the man make such moral decisions and how was he held accountable for his actions.…...

British director Joe Wright, who helmed Winston Churchill drama “Darkest Hour,” is at the Venice Film Festival with another historical piece, high-end TV drama “M. Son of the Century.” The series chronicles Benito Mussolini’s rise to power and is particularly timely as populist leaders are sprouting up all over the world.
Based on Italian author Antonio Scurati’s eponymous bestselling novel which traces the birth of Fascism in Italy, “M” reconstructs Mussolini’s ascent with an innovative approach. Luca Marinelli plays the despotic leader during the period between 1919, when he founded the fascist party in Italy, and 1925 when – having gained power with the 1922 March on Rome – Mussolini made an infamous speech in the Italian Chamber of Deputies declaring himself a dictator.
“M” is produced by Sky Studios and Lorenzo Mieli for Fremantle-owned The Apartment Pictures in collaboration with Pathé and Small Forward. The show, which was largely shot at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios,...

Filmmaker Joe Wright takes a 180 in the portrayal of World War II prime ministers, pivoting from the wise and measured Winston Churchill in 2017’s Darkest Hour (which delivered a Best Actor Oscar win to Gary Oldman) to the spontaneous, hot blooded and short-fused Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini in the Fremantle/Apartment/Sky/Pathe series M. Son of the Century, which made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival today. While the Lido gets to see the series’ full eight hours that Wright directed and executive produced, TIFF will be treated to the first two episodes.
We spoke with Wright while he was editing the punk-rock stylized series. He originally shot M. from October 2022-April 2023; the show carrying all the filmmaker’s tonal sensibilities, i.e., deep amber colors, flickering shadows, fierce pacing which we’ve seen in his award-winning features Darkest Hour, Atonement, Anna Karenina and more.

Is it wrong to say something good came out of fascism? Probably. And it should be noted that Venice International Film Festival’s founder, Guiseppe Volpi, though a leading figure within Italy’s National Fascist Party, did ultimately oppose Benito Mussolini‘s government and the country’s alliance with Germany and Adolf Hitler. Nonetheless, his legacy is tainted as a result of this association, even with his and his family’s massive contributions to cinema.
The Venice International Film Festival began in 1932 as a result of Italy’s growing appreciation and interest in film. The Floating City had already played host to an arts festival known as Venice Biennale since 1893, so this film section was tied in and quickly overshadowed all other showcases. The actual event is held on the island of Lido rather than in the city’s central hub. This location was chosen in order to increase tourism...

In recent years, Labor Day weekend’s reputation as a box office dead zone has been upended by strong showings from films like “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “The Equalizer 3.” Unfortunately, for 2024, standard perception prevails with a predictably lackluster showing.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) opens next week to a projected $100 million+ debut, starting what looks like an improved rest of the year compared to the final four months in 2023. For now, it’s tread water time, with the late summer’s best doing best (and in some cases holding extremely well).
The weekend’s total of $86 million was down only $6 million from last year despite the boost from the Denzel Washington sequel ($35 million). Key was the sustained strength of previously top titles. Still #1 “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney) fell only 17 percent ($15 million), now about $600 million. Two Universal hits already on PVOD did even better. #5 “Twisters” actually...

“Slow Horses” star Gary Oldman is the frontrunner to win Best Drama Actor at the upcoming Emmys. Oldman earned his first and only Oscar six years ago for his portrayal of World War II-era British prime minister Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” That win was sandwiched between two other lead bids for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2012) and “Mank” (2021). His sole Emmy nomination to date came in 2001 for his guest appearance in the two-part seventh season finale of “Friends”; he lost to Derek Jacobi (“Frasier”).
On Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” which is based on a series of novels by Mick Herron, Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, a particularly uncouth MI5 officer saddled with the responsibility of supervising a group of service rejects. This constitutes his very first regular role on a continuing series and his first live action TV performance at all in over two decades.

The Star Trek fans often greet each other by forming the letter ‘V’ with their fingers with a partition in the middle. The sign, referred to as the Vulcan salute was created by veteran actor Leonard Nimoy himself for his character.

Becoming an icon that rapidly gained popularity, billions of people know the Vulcan sign, and Star Trek fans often greet each other with the Vulcan salute. However, Nimoy revealed how he came up with that idea.

War movies are usually retrospective by nature. Even "Casablanca," the most famous World War 2 movie made during World War 2, was set in the recent past. The movie was released in November 1942, after the U.S. had joined the Allies, but it is set in December 1941, just before America entered the war.
As documented by author Richard Osborne in "Casablanca Companion: The Movie Classic and Its Place in History," the filming of "Casablanca" took place on a Warner Bros. lot across 59 days, from May 25 to August 3, 1942. The cast and crew didn't think they were making anything remarkable, but the hand of fate intervened.
In "Casablanca," the titular city is shown as a waystation for refugees, albeit a dangerous one because it is controlled by the Vichy French government. France had ruled portions of Morocco as a colony since 1912, so when France fell to the Nazis in June 1940, they got Morocco in the package.

July 29th marked forty-three years since Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s lavish royal nuptials at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Diana Was Only 20 Years Old When She Married Charles
The former couple, who were wed on July 29th, 1981, had what was, at the time, dubbed “The wedding of the century.” Many people thought Prince Charles and Diana had a storybook romance. Little did they know, not so much.
A young and radiant Lady Diana Spencer, who was just 20 years old at the time, married Prince Charles, who was 12 years older than her.
The wedding was seen globally by a television audience of 750 million in 74 countries. Truth be told, the ceremony almost didn’t happen. The night before the wedding, Charles admitted to Diana that “he didn’t love her.”
But Charles and Diana went through with the wedding. It is thought that Diana’s father, Earl Spencer, changed her mind about calling it off.

“Remember, gentlemen,” says Henry Cavill’s Gus March-Phillipps in The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare, “try to have fun.” It is an instructive line. This is a very silly kind of war film, an action comedy with only a tangential, Wikipedia-skim-read level of historical reality. It is extremely loosely based on the real Operation Postmaster, the daring off-books operation which saw a crack team of commandos steal enemy warships from the Germans.

After this week’s Evil, The Manager won’t have Leland Townsend to kick around anymore. And that’s because Leland framed him, poisoned him, stabbed him and then ate his heart during a shareholder presentation. How’s that for a corporate shake-up?
Episode 9 marks a definite escalation in Leland’s diabolical minion-ship, which I’m guessing will be very bad news for #TeamGood in the near future. But at the moment, they’re preoccupied by talking to dead people and making tinfoil hats. True story.

There’s a lot of talk about what it means to be an old man these days, but for John Lithgow, it’s a “rosy time” in his career to play old men like former FBI assistant director in FX’s The Old Man.
“It’s interesting. Over the last 10 years I’ve entered my old man chapter,” Lithgow said Wednesday at the Television Critics Tour in Pasadena. “It’s been very exciting. It’s the rosiest time in my character. I’m old enough to play all these old roles because they are great roles — Winston Churchill, Roger Ailes, Harold Harper. I’ve been leaping from one great role to another. The whole story is about old men, a very unusual series featuring old men. The only paradigm I can think of is grumpy old men, but that’s not us. Brendan Gleeson has joined the cast of the upcoming Spider-Man Noir series at Amazon, Variety has learned from sources.
This marks one of Gleeson’s first announced project since his Academy Award and Golden Globe nominated turn in “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Gleeson will star in the series opposite previously announced series lead Nicolas Cage as well as the recently cast Lamorne Morris. The show, now titled “Spider-Noir,” was formally ordered to series in May with Cage in the lead role. As previously reported, the show will debut domestically on MGM+’s linear channel and then globally on Amazon Prime Video.
Amazon declined to comment on Gleeson’s casting.
Per the official logline, the show “tells the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.

Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare had a short run in theaters in the United States. It only grossed about $26 million, and never played theaters outside of the U.S. In fact, the film, which is now on 4K Blu-ray in the States never got any kind of release at all internationally. What gives?
It all has to do with how the film was financed, with Prime Video having a deal for international rights across Europe, Latin America, Anz, Canada, South Africa, India, and pan-Asian PayTV. The film is now finally set for a Prime Video release, with it premiering on July 25th, more than three months after the movie played U.S theaters. Prime Video Canada and its international subsidiaries made the unheralded announcement on Twitter (X).
Reckless, unpopular, a little unhinged… sounds like the perfect team for the job. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare premieres July 25 on Prime Video.

Based upon recently declassified files of the British War Department and inspired by true events, Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is an action-comedy that tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming. The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly “ungentlemanly” fighting techniques. Ultimately their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British Sas and modern Black Ops warfare.

Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is heading straight to Prime Video in the UK with a July date now confirmed.
Well, it’s official. Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare won’t be heading to UK cinemas and will premiere on Prime Video at the tail end of July.
We already had a sneaking suspicion this might happen after the film premiered in US cinemas all the way back in April, with no UK release date in sight, but it’s still a tad disappointing. You can watch the film on a smaller screen from 25th July when it’ll be available on Prime Video.

June 6, 2024, marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion of the beaches of Normandy, France. Code-named Operation Overlord, it marked the largest amphibious invasion in military history and resulted in the defeat of German Nazi forces at Reims.
Some films portray the soldiers who set foot on the shores of Normandy, portrayed by actors including John Wayne, Tom Hanks, Mark Hamill, Lee Marvin, Matt Damon, Vin Diesel, Tom Sizemore, Ted Danson, Paul Giamatti and more. Others focus on Winston Churchill, who made the call for Britain to join the invasion. Two Churchill biopics, starring Brian Cox and Gary Oldman, came out in 2017 and depict the strenuous decision the prime minister made.

This article contains spoilers for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."
Wes Ball's "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" isn't a reboot of the beloved franchise, nor is it a direct sequel to the most recent trilogy, but instead a standalone sequel set hundreds of years after the time of Caesar, the evolved patriarchal leader played by Andy Serkis. Caesar in this series differs from the character played by Roddy McDowell in the original, as this version sees apes and humans as unlikely equals rather than inherently viewing the latter as subservient, and even lets fellow ape Koba fall to his death for ruining the chance for apes and humans to have peace.
Humans are being ravaged by the simian flu, a condition that allows the apes to flourish from an evolutionary standpoint but wipes out a majority of humanity. Those that survive due to genetic immunity splinter into small communities,...

Albert Finney had an acting legacy including triumphs on stage and television. He was primarily known worldwide for his career, which lasted over half a century, as a film actor, equally adept in lighthearted musicals and complex dramas.
Finney’s work has been heralded in all three media. He won London’s Olivier Award for “Orphans” on stage, and won an Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for his performance as Winston Churchill in TV’s “The Gathering Storm.” But it was in film that Finney was most honored. In 2000, Finney scored a rare double at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning Best Supporting Actor for his work in Steven Soderbergh‘s “Erin Brockovich,” and even though he had little more than a cameo part in Soderbergh’s “Traffic” later that year, the role was big enough for him to win a second SAG Award that night as part of the film’s ensemble cast.

Guy Ritchie has directed everything from low-budget hits like the crime caper "Snatch" to the $1 billion monster hit that was 2019's live-action "Aladdin" remake. But the director has also been behind some pretty big misfires, most notably 2017's "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword." Ritchie has been on a tear lately though, releasing three movies in theaters over the last 13 months. Unfortunately for the filmmaker and all involved, every single one of those movies has disappointed -- if not outright flopped -- at the box office.
This past weekend saw the release of "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" in theaters in the U.S. Released by Lionsgate, the World War II film took in just $8.9 million, placing fourth on the charts behind "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" ($9.5 million), which was in its fourth weekend. That's a relatively lousy start for a movie with a $60 million production budget. Granted, Lionsgate...
