It’s always intriguing to see an artist push at the tropes but there’s equal risk in the venture. Is the director confident to thread together ambitious, restless ideas within the folds of the Western and reframe them on exciting, bold terms? Therein lies the key.

The film hobbles pace by misreading the temperature of a crafty slow-burn. The psychological depth is missing, depriving the film of the complexity that underpins its atmospheric shifts toward horror and unease. Neither is the fascist-ruled setting of Spain in the 90s congruous to establishing a sense of the world the character inhabits. The film is also emotionally one-note.

Questions of power and responsibility, individuals and systems, civilised values and evolutionary pressures haunt F Javier Gutiérrez’s moody thriller. A festival hit since granted a well-deserved cinematic release, it sets up the ostensibly simple story of a man whose surrender to temptation costs him everything he loves, only to expand into something richer and more complex as additional layers of wrongdoing are revealed and nature itself seems to express its offence at the misdeeds of its human offspring.

That man is Eladio (Victor Clavijo), a hard-working groundskeeper who lives with his wife Marcia (Ruth Díaz), ten-year-old son Floren (Moisés Ruiz) and dog Yulen on the estate of the wealthy Don Francisco (Pedro Casablanc), a figure whom we initially see only in shadow. One day Eladio is approached by another prosperous man, Don Carlos (Manuel Morón), who offers him money to expand the number of hunting stands on the land from ten.

Fathom Events and Warner Bros.’ DC Studios are blasting off documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, a favorite from Sundance, and Music Box has the festival’s Grand Jury Prize-winner In The Summers among a handful of solid new release including The Featherweight about boxer Willie Pep, and Who’s Afraid Of Nathan Law? a doc following the heroic Hong Kong student activist.

DC, HBO Documentary Films and CNN Films acquired Super/Man out of the festival. It will debut in cinemas across the U.S. on Saturday with an encore presentation Sept. 25, Reeve’s birthday. Reeve’s definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman over four films set the benchmark for the superhero cinematic universes that dominate cinema today. Film Movement has snapped up North American rights to folk horror film “The Wait” (La Espera) from Spanish filmmaker F. Javier Gutierrez, best known for “Before the Fall” and “Rings,” following its North American premiere at Fantastic Fest. Film Movement is eyeing an autumn digital and cable release.

The film is set deep in the Andalusian countryside, where Eladio works as the groundskeeper of a hunting estate owned by the powerful Don Francisco. After taking a bribe from a veteran hunter, Eladio’s normal life falls apart, plunging him into the depths of guilt, hatred and revenge.

“The Wait,” which played at numerous film festivals including Sitges, Shanghai, Vancouver and Oldenburg, is “powerful and devastating,” according to Fotogramas, and “takes viewers along on a macabre descent into hell,” said Screen Zealots. It is “superbly directed,” Horror Fuel said, with an “impressive performance” from Victor Clavijo, according to Starburst.

“Undercover” is based on the real-life story of Aranzazu Berradre Marín, the pseudonym for the only police officer in Spanish history to infiltrate the terrorist organisation Eta successfully. The Basque nationalist separatist group killed over 829 people between 1968 and 2010 and injured over 22,000 until its dissolution in 2018.

The film, written by Echevarría and Amèlia Mora, takes place over the eight-year period when Marín was infiltrated and focuses on the mind-shattering fear of discovery that permeated her days during the mission.

Writer/director F. Javier Gutiérrez returned to his native Spain to make his third film La Espera, or, in English, The Wait. It’s a title that refers not just to the passage of time but to the ten hunting stands on the estate of Don Francisco. They are watched over by Eladio, who lives on the remote property with his wife Marcia, and their son, Floren (Moisés Ruiz).

At the start of the 1973 hunting season, he’s told by Don Carlos, Don Francisco’s right-hand man, to surreptitiously add three more. At first, he refuses, saying that would crowd the hunting parties and be unsafe due to the risk of crossfires. Eventually, he relents, a decision he soon regrets when Floren is killed in a freak accident leading to Marcia’s suicide.

Screamfest Horror Film Festival today announced its first-wave lineup of competitive features and shorts for its 23rd edition.

Javier Gutiérrez describes his latest feature as a “slow-burn supernatural neo-western set in Spain in the 1970s.” That’s certainly an apt summary, but one that also underscores the movie’s main problem: It’s trying to be too many things at once, and by doing so amounts to less than the sum of its parts.

The Spanish filmmaker’s debut from 2008, Before the Fall, tried to combine a disaster flick with a home-invasion flick, yielding similarly sketchy results. In both cases, Gutiérrez showcases a keen sense of style but an inability, despite all the genre-jumping, to make something that feels truly original. The first set of exclusive photos from “Hernan,” the much-anticipated conquistador mega series starring Oscar Jaenada, is out.

The entire series drops on Amazon Prime Video Spain and Latin America on Nov. 21. Talks are still underway in other territories where Amazon Prime is present. The History Channel Latin America will air two episodes a week from Friday Nov. 22 across the region.

In Mexico, Mexican free-to-air broadcaster channel Azteca 7 will air two episodes a week from Sunday Nov. 24.

Touted as the most expensive Hispanic series ever made, ‘Hernan’ is produced by Mexico’s Dopamine, a Salinas Group unit, in collaboration with Spain’s Onza Entertainment.

The eight-episode series marks the 500th Anniversary of Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes’ arrival in Mexico. Set in 1519, the ambitious series turns on the conquest of Mexico by Cortés and his troops, with each episode featuring a key character’s perspective of this tumultuous time in Mexico and Spain’s history.

In the wake of its streaming rights acquisition by Amazon Prime, epic series “Hernan” has sold to Mexican broadcaster Azteca and pan-regional pay TV network, The History Channel, which have jointly acquired the series for their respective platforms.

Produced by Mexico’s Dopamine, a Salinas Group unit, and Spain’s Onza Entertainment, the eight-episode mega-series marks the 500th Anniversary of Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes’ arrival in Mexico. It is expected to bow later this year via the various outlets. Azteca seemed a likely platform for the series as it is also owned by the Salinas Group.

Amazon Prime has picked up Spanish and Latin American streaming rights to “Hernan,” the much-anticipated Spanish conquistador series produced by Spain’s Onza Entertainment and Mexico’s Dopamine, a Salinas Group company.

The Ott giant plans to bow the eight-episode series later this year, in time to mark the 500th anniversary of the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes’ arrival in Mexico.

Set in 1519, the ambitious series turns on the conquest of Mexico by Cortés and his troops, and will be narrated by the protagonists of this momentous time in Mexico and Spain’s history, from Moctezuma to Alvarado, Olid to Malintzin.

Spanish actor Oscar Jaenada, known for his roles in “Cantinflas” and “Luis Miguel: The Series,” plays the conquistador.

Jaenada leads a cast from Mexico and Spain including Víctor Clavijo (Captain Cristóbal de Olid), Michel Brown (Captain Alvarado), Dagoberto Gama (Moctezuma), Jorge Guerrero (Xiconténcatl), Almagro San Miguel (Captain Sandoval), Ishbel Bautista...

So many names have been tossed around over the years for The Crow reboot, but news started to pick up over the last few weeks. You may have heard rumors of Tom Hiddleston and Alexander Skarsgard, but someone else is going to be playing Eric Draven. According to Deadline, Luke Evans is currently in negotiations to start in Relativity’s remake of The Crow.

Evans was previously seen in The Raven and Immortals, and recently signed on for Universal’s new Dracula movie. Before he appears in Dracula, we’ll see him as the villain in Fast & Furious 6 this summer. Apparently, Evans has been the first choice for the role, but his busy schedule was causing conflicts. In order to accommodate his schedule, the movie will not begin filming until next year.

Back in January, 2012, Relativity Media announced that F. Javier Gutiérre would direct the movie and Jesse Wigutow would write the script.

With The Crow legal dispute between The Weinstein Co. and Relativity Media resolved, the two movie studios can move forward with its production. Today the two studios announced that F. Javier Gutierrez will direct the movie and use a script that will be penned by Jesse Wigutow.

The Crow will be based on James O’Barr’s 1989 comic book of the same name, and Stephen Norrington will pen its script. The film will continue to focus on a musician who dies while unsuccessfully trying to save his fiancée’s life from an attack. One year later, he is resurrected from the dead and is bent on revenge on those who took his and his fiancée’s life.

Yesterday we reported that The Crow reboot was moving forward. Relativity Media decided to play nice and dropped it's lawsuit against The Weinstein Company. Comingsoon is reporting that it has found a director in F. Javier Gutiérrez (Before the Fall) and a writer in Jesse Wigutow. The original film was not even that great, and does not warrant a reboot in my opinion. This seems like a waste of time to me. What are your thoughts? Just one day after it was announced that Relativity Media and The Weinstein Company settled their lawsuit over distribution of The Crow reboot, a new director and writer are officially on board.
