Short films are always a great way to spot some emerging new talent, and they’re often bloody good watches in their own right. If you’re looking for somewhere to start in the medium, you could do much worse than the upcoming list.

Founded in 2020 and with the first awards event taking place in 2021, 2023 marks the third consecutive year of the British Short Film Awards, and they’ve announced all their winners across 26 categories.

FX has released the first trailer for the fifth and final season of “Better Things,” its original comedy series created by, executive produced by and starring Pamela Adlon.

Adlon stars as Sam, a working actress raising three daughters in Los Angeles attempting to navigate her life and find fulfillment. Mikey Madison, Hannah Alligood and Olivia Edward portray Sam’s daughter, who are each struggling to come of age, while Celia Imrie portrays Sam’s mother, who deals with increasingly difficult mental and physical health issues. Adlon heavily based the series on her own experiences as an actor raising three daughters.

Yang will play the head of an internationally renowned Chinese tech company based in the UK.

Gerard Johnson, writer-director of the serial-killer flick Tony and the corrupt-cop thriller Hyena, both set in London, travels 300 miles north to continue his run of blackly comic dramas. Muscle takes place in Newcastle (not that you’d know it from the cockney accents), where Simon (Cavan Clerkin) has a soul-crushing sales job and a moribund relationship. Not likely. Every depressing detail, from Simon’s ill-fitting work shirts to the concrete car parks he walks past on his commute, underline what a colourless existence this is. Gerard Johnson’s feature, which is filmed entirely in black and white, is set in a testosterone-fueled world of hardcore gyms. It follows Simon (Cavan Clerkin), a directionless and unhappy office worker whose life is gradually taken over by domineering personal trainer Terry (Craig Fairbrass).

“Apart from the documentary ‘Pumping Iron,’ real gym culture has never been tackled in film before,” Johnson said. “I want to change that with this original character study. The movie, which is “dripping in sweat, tears, and testosterone,” according to WestEnd, centers on Simon, an unhappy, unambitious office worker whose life is gradually taken over by Terry, his new, very hands-on personal trainer. Terry soon reveals himself to be more committed — and more dangerous — than Simon could have imagined.

EastEnders' Ronnie Mitchell is to get a blast from the past when her first love Joel Reynolds turns up in Albert Square. Star of BBC Three's Pulling, Cavan Clerkin will take on the role of Ronnie's (Samantha Womack) old flame and father to her now-dead daughter Danielle Jones (Lauren Crace).
