This article contains spoilers for Homicide: Los Angeles episode 1.
Phil Spector was a music legend and Los Angeles celebrity royalty. He revolutionized rock and roll with his “Wall of Sound” production, and went on to finalize The Beatles’ Let It Be. This means nothing to investigators on Homicide: Los Angeles. On Feb. 3, 2003, the body of Lana Clarkson, a 40-year-old actress and VIP Hostess of The House of Blues, was found dead in a chair in Spector’s foyer.
Netflix’s five-episode true crime docuseries fully covers the prosecutorial pursuit in one installment. Here’s what was condensed in discovery.
Lana Clarkson Was a Successful Actress
In the June 2003 article “Inside the Undoing of Phil Spector,” Spector told Esquire Clarkson “kissed the gun” before shooting herself. At trial, Spector’s attorneys claimed a depressed Clarkson used the 38-caliber pistol in his foyer. In spite of the Spector PR team’s smear campaign,...

The Osbournes dug up a blast from the past on the latest episode of their podcast, playing and discussing Sharon Osbourne’s forgotten disco song “You Can Strike Oil in Hollywood.” The 1978 tune was recorded under the group name The Sheikettes.
The latest episode of The Osbournes Podcast features the family answering fan questions, with the first being whether they had “found Sharon’s secret disco band song yet.” An excited Jack and Kelly both exclaimed, “Yes, we have!”
Jack then quipped to Ozzy, “You are not the only singer in this family. Who knew Kelly and I came from such greatness when it comes to music?” He then played the song from his phone, revealing a cheesy tune that begins with the classic “Arabian riff” (also known as the “snake charmer song”) before settling into a disco meets doo-wop vibe.
Afterward, Sharon explained, “This is why we did it.

Spector, the new, four-part documentary premiering on Showtime on November 4th, is unique among music docs: It’s part true-crime narrative, part monumentally lurid Behind the Music. Directed by Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott, it takes us through the well-documented story of how Phil Spector went from iconic and contentious record producer to convicted murderer.
The tale is still both familiar and queasy. After he’d made booming, cathartic pop symphonies like the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby,” the Crystals’ “Then He Kissed Me” and the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve...

Child actors often grown up to become veteran actors, but Thora Birch was always different: She wanted to be the one who had the answers. Birch made her mark in “Hocus Pocus,” “American Beauty,” and “Ghost World,” but she had her eye on being the person who told the actors what to do. After producing indie films “Petunia” and “The Competition,” she’s now got that opportunity as the director of Lifetime movie “The Gabby Petito Story,” in which she also takes a role as Gabby’s mom, Nichole.
The daughter of pornographic performers, Birch started acting at four and snagged major commercials before turning to films with “Purple People Eater” at age six. Her three-decade career also includes a recurring role on “The Walking Dead” and starring in the sci-fi podcast “Overleaper.”
Along the way she’s earned BAFTA, Emmy, and Golden Globe nominations and she’s worked with...

When it comes to iconic movie themes, Rocky's "Flying High Now" definitely ranks up there with some of the best. If it weren't for the work of Carol Connors and Bill Conti, however, it may have never existed! Originally, Rocky's training sequence had some cheesy ass song about punching someone on a Sunday...it essentially sounded like some type of folktale song. You'll hear Connors sing part of it in the video below, and you'll also learn the interesting story of how one of cinema's most iconic themes came to be:...

Director Ryan Coogler’s Creed was released November 25, 2015 – nearly forty years after the original Rocky film debuted – and was an instant winner at the box office. Creed brought in $1.4 million from the Tuesday screenings, an industry record for Tuesday pre-shows for the Thanksgiving weekend. Ticket sales were $29.6 million for the three-day weekend.
It’s a terrific, perfect movie, with wonderful performances by Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson and especially Sylvester Stallone. (Review)
Creed focuses on the relationship between the late Apollo Creed’s son, Adonis Creed (Jordan), and the retired former boxing champion Rocky Balboa (Stallone). After meeting in Philadelphia, Rocky agrees to train Adonis, despite his own declining health.
The original Rocky (1976) film won the 1977 Academy Award for ‘Best Motion Picture’. Rocky composer Bill Conti, along with Carol Connors, were nominated for ‘Best Music: Original Song’ for “Gonna Fly Now.”
The early screenings had people cheering and clapping. This true crowd pleaser,...

One of the bright spots this past film year was the success of Disney’s Frozen. On the strength of it’s more modern princesses and an infectious score, the film set box office records and has garnered two Oscar nominations, Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Let It Go”, its infectious hit. In honor of Frozen’s nomination, we figured it was time to take a look at the history of animated movies in Original Song.
The history of animated films picking up nominations and wins in Best Original Song is a tale as old as time (see what I did there?). Since the 1930s, animated films have won this award 13 times and over 50 nominations, which you can see below. This is an even greater feat when you think about the consideration that animated films get when lists of musicals are made (they...

Four decades after the pornographic film "Deep Throat," we need not one, but two biopics on the star of the movie, Linda Lovelace. (The first stars Amanda Seyfried. The other which may never happen -- stars Malin Akerman.) These dueling projects are just one measure of how big a deal "Deep Throat" remains 40 years after it went into wide release, on June 30, 1972. Other measures include the multi-billions in profits earned each year by a porn-film production industry that scarcely existed before "Deep Throat," the level of household-name fame the film's title earned amid the Watergate scandal, the countless courtroom challenges over whether porn merits First Amendment protections, and the still-ongoing debate over whether porn is good or bad for women -- a debate embodied by the life story of Lovelace herself, still the most famous/infamous porn star who ever lived. And then there's the snickering or prickly reaction you...

Birch is dropped from Susanna Lo's thriller biopic of Manson follower Sandra Good.
Director Susanna Lo tells us that Birch's father/manager, Jack Birch, has caused a ruckus in the production and Thora will pay the price by getting ousted from the much-coveted role of Sandra Good in the film Manson Girls (Lindsay Lohan was once slated to star in the movie, but I think we all know what happened with that). Heather Matarazzo is still on board to play Sadie Atkins.
"Thora is a great actress," says Lo, "but there have been several problems with her father/manager that make it too difficult to work things out in an ensemble cast situation where everything needs to be balanced and fair to the whole cast. You can quote me on that. On Wednesday, January 5, you will see a fresh Breakdown go out recasting the role of Sandra Good, which...

We’ve always wondered why Thora Birch’s career went nowhere after American Beauty and Ghost World—could her parents/managers be to blame? The 28-year-old actress was booted from the upcoming off-Broadway revival of Dracula last week after another actor accused her dadager, former porn star Jack Birch, of threatening him physically. The reason for their confrontation? Jack thought the guy was giving Thora too many back rubs, even though they were part of the scene. “I can’t have one of my actors in a situation where he is physically threatened by the father of anyone,” director Paul Alexander told the New York Times, who also accused Papa of inspecting the sets and spying through stage windows. “It was odd to have Jack Birch around so much, but that it hadn’t really been a problem until Thursday.” Jack Birch, who starred in Deep Throat with wife/co-manager...

The New York Times' Arts Beat blog has a strange new story this morning. Thora Birch, the star of "American Beauty" and "Ghost World" was fired from an Off-Broadway production of "Dracula" just days before the show's first performance. Though Birch's camp was initially told that the play's director, Paul Alexander, wasn't pleased with Birch's performance, he told the Times that her dismissal was actual the fault of Birch's father and manager, Jack Birch, who "threatened another actor during a rehearsal" for touching his daughter:
"According to Mr. Alexander, who was told of the incident afterward by the actor, Mr. Birch asked the actor why he was rubbing Ms. Birch's back during [a] scene. The actor - who none of the sides would name - said that he had been directed to do so as part of the scene. Mr. Birch objected, saying that the backrub was unnecessary, and told the actor to stop.

While doing a casual perusal of recent red carpet photos, we happened upon some pictures from the Taste Of Beverly Hills Wine & Food Festival Opening Night. Sounds pretty boring, right? Wrong: Meet Carol Connors. This seemingly regular old lady with possibly the most fantastic purse I’ve ever seen is not just some random old billionairess about to leave her entire fortune to her three cats. Though I’m sure she is that as well. Carol is also a songwriter! “What could this woman possibly have written on her Swarovski crystal purse?” you’re asking? How about the Theme Song To Rocky? Seriously. I love her. So much so, please look at what my Facebook profile is looking like at this very moment: And as though your weekends have not already been made, look who else was there/is alive!! Monty Hall!! The only game show host who has a problem named after him!
