The feature directorial debut of actress and comedian Nina Conti, “Sunlight,” reimagines Monkey, one of the characters she performs in her ventriloquist act, as the human-sized alter ego of a woman on the run from a toxic relationship. In addition to wearing multiple hats behind the scenes of the film, Conti wears two costumes, playing both the woman and the monkey.
“The monkey is much easier,” she tells Variety.
Principal photography took place in Albuquerque, N.M., just a few dozen miles from the Santa Fe International Film Festival, where the film screened on Oct. 19 with Conti and executive producer Christopher Guest in attendance. Speaking in the El Dorado Hotel lobby right after the screening, she exuded a joyful relief that “Sunlight” was well-received by festival attendees; the film’s completion and current festival run marks the payoff to a journey that began more than 20 years ago when she first...

We’re introduced to Roy at his lowest point, alone in a motel room with nothing left to live for. But fate has other plans when a surprise visitor bursts through the door – or should I say, bursts through wearing a full-body monkey costume. Under the flashy fur lies Jane, a woman fleeing her past who saves Roy from ending his life. With her bold personality and wild ideas, Monkey whisks our depressed protagonist away on an outrageous road trip that will challenge everything he thought he knew.
Played by comedian Nina Conti in her directorial debut, Monkey is as freewheeling and fiery as the simian persona Conti has brought to stages worldwide. Joining her is Shenoah Allen as the straight-laced Roy, thrown for a loop by this bizarre stranger with grand schemes of starting a business.

“This really is my first everything,” admits Arthur Conti. “Everything is so new to me.”
The young British actor isn’t exaggerating. When we meet at Soho House in London, he’s sporting the sort of wide-eyed expression of someone trying to come to terms with a couple of life-changing weeks that might be difficult to put into words.
For starters, Conti recently got back from the Venice Film Festival opening night world premiere of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” alongside director Tim Burton and fellow castmembers Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe.
“And also Sigourney Weaver’s there, and Isabelle Huppert and Taylor Russell and all these people watching me on a very big screen… and then there’s all this clapping … it’s hard to believe,” he says.
The disbelief is understandable. Because not only did Venice mark Conti’s “first ever film festival,...

“Cinema is in a very bad way – I think it’s lost its place,” Brian Cox told the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) during a surprise appearance in the festival’s industry programme.
“I think it has lost its place, partly because of the grandiose element between Marvel and DC and all of that, and it’s beginning to implode. You’re losing the plot, I think. Television has really stolen the march, when you get incredible things like Ripley, like Succession,” said Cox.

“There are so many people who talk bollocks about film,” actor Brian Cox furiously concluded this afternoon at the Edinburgh Film Festival.
The veteran Scottish actor, now best known for his leading role in HBO’s Succession, was the surprise addition to an industry talk at the revamped Scottish fest where he characteristically shared his piece about the biz.
During the well-attended talk, chaired by Edinburgh TV Festival director Rowan Woods, Cox said he believes cinema is currently “in a very bad way” and has largely been overtaken by the work being created on television.
“Television is doing what cinema used to do,” Cox said. “Cinema has lost its place partly because of all the grandiose elements like Marvel and DC. It’s beginning to implode, so you’re kind of losing the plot. And television has really stolen the mark. Look at incredible things like Ripley and Succession. There are so many.

Brian Cox thinks cinema is “in a very bad way,” with the Marvel and DC Universes partly to blame.
The legendary actor of stage and screen — who most recently garnered critical acclaim for his award-winning role in HBO’s Succession — spoke at an Edinburgh International Film Festival panel on Saturday. When asked about the recent critical success of globally popular TV shows, Cox cited the latest MCU installment Deadpool & Wolverine as a great example of cinematic “party time.”
“What’s happened is that television is doing what cinema used to do,” Cox told the audience of television’s originality. “I think cinema is in a very bad way. I think it’s lost its place because of, partly, the grandiose element between Marvel, DC and all of that. And I think it’s beginning to implode, actually. You’re kind of losing the plot.”

All official communications from the 2024 Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) organizers have described this year’s edition as “revamped” or “revitalized” — a pointed note to signpost that new management is at the helm. The declaration is perhaps odd for an event that has often trumpeted its heritage, self-styling as the world’s “oldest continuously running film festival.” For the past two years, however, Edinburgh has been at the center of a significant period of turbulence within the Scottish film industry.
All the chaos can be traced back to the finances of Scotland’s Centre for the Moving Image (Cmi), which collapsed in 2022. At the time, a statement from Cmi executives said a “perfect storm” of rising costs and falling admissions numbers due to the pandemic had been exacerbated by the current cost of living crisis. As part of the Cmi’s closure, operations at Eiff were shut down. The Belmont Filmhouse in Aberdeen,...

It takes many people to fill Richard Osman’s shoes, and not just because he wears a size 14. Back in April 2021, the TV presenter, producer and novelist announced that he was leaving his co-presenter role on Pointless to focus on his hugely successful Thursday Murder Club book series and other projects. Due to the ‘stars we see in the night sky are actually hundreds of years in the past’ nature of TV broadcast, by that point, Osman was already four months out of the job. 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown will return for a new series in May and, yep, Joey Essex will be back.
Host Jimmy Carr will be back on the show alongside team captains Sean Lock and Jon Richardson and Countdown stars Rachel Riley and Susie Dent.
Once again, Dent will be joined in Dictionary Corner by a host of celebrities including Johnny Vegas, Joe Lycett and Nina Conti. And then there's Joey Essex - who won't be in Dictionary Corner this time, but will be helping out Riley with the letters and numbers. So that's going to go well.
The former Towie star previously appeared on the show in September, when he vowed that he could handle the Countdown clock because he's "a good counter" and strangely got confused about whether or not he was on Countdown.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year (again), and as usual it’s getting to those last few weeks before the big day when creative ideas and planning make way for frantic grabs at whatever is left on the shelves after the Black Friday zombie hordes have cleared everything out.
But fear not: because the best of Christmas is watching movies, re-watching old TV specials and trying hard to forget that George Lucas ever decided that anyone wanted a Star Wars Christmas show, there’ll always be a helping hand round these parts for those who want it.
So if you’re buying for a difficult brother, a picky sister or just for the film, gaming or TV fan in your life, what follows is a compendium of the finest gift ideas for this year’s festivities, as usual there are massive opportunities to win most of what has been included…...

The Television Academy of Arts & Sciences released this year's Emmy ballots on Monday. Now that the ballots are out, it's time for our annual two-pronged experiment, in which Dan tries to predict the likeliest nominees in each major category, while I pretend that I'm an actually TV Academy member and pick the six nominees that would make me the happiest. We are, as always, playing by the Emmy rules, which means we can't argue for someone who didn't submit themselves (say, Alan Cumming for "The Good Wife"), can't move someone from lead to supporting or vice versa, and can't declare that "True Detective" is a miniseries and therefore clear more room in the drama categories. I'm also obviously limited by what I watched and what I haven't. I've only seen a couple of "Nurse Jackie" episodes so far this season, for instance, and the sample size wasn't enough for me...

Millions know him as part of C4's It Crowd or as the charming cop in Hollywood hit Bridesmaids. Now the versatile Irish actor is making his mark on the stage in Of Mice and Men

Is he a TV cameraman or a seedy showbiz journalist? No, it is Chris O'Dowd, one of the most bankable stars to attend the film festival that year, 2012.

Fox cut back on its order of Dads, which isn’t a good sign for the critically-reviled sitcom.
Sutton Foster has joined the cast of Darren Star‘s TV Land pilot Younger according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series follows a forty-something divorcee who succeeds in lying about her age while restarting her life.
Aw, I miss Bunheads. And not just for the hot marine biologist bartender.
In talking with Vulture, Scandal-creator Shonda Rhimes discusses last week’s shocking opening scene and how it reflects the mindset of the writers’ room. “I feel like we’re fighting against the very traditional idea that we see these people and we identify with them and therefore they must be good. On our show, we see these people and we identify with them — that doesn’t mean they’re good by any stretch of the imagination. Sometimes you love Cyrus, and he is a monster.

Comic and ventriloquist Nina Conti is shooting a game show pilot for BBC One, it has been revealed.
Audience tickets are available for the show, which has the title Speak For Yourself and follows a similar format to ITV's Mrs and Mrs. The main twist will be that Conti co-hosts the show with her two puppets Monket and Granny.
The description of the pilot claims that couples' relationships will be "put to the test" by the show.
"Nina, with the help of her cheekiest puppet characters, finds out what skeletons lurk in the cupboards of our two couples," reads the outline.
"The big questions are… how well do our couples know each other and how well do they work together? And which couple will win the big cash prize at the end of the show?"
Earlier this year Conti starred in HBO and BBC Two comedy Family Tree alongside Chris O'Dowd.

The Chadwick family are brought to life by largely improvised performances from an ensemble case of comedy greats including Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids, The Sapphires, The It Crowd) as protagonist Tom Chadwick, Tom Bennett (Midsummer Murders, Eastenders) as his best friend; BAFTA winner Nina Conti (For Your Consideration, Holby City) as his quirky sister Bea; and Michael McKean (Murder She Wrote, Homeland, The Adventures of Superman) as his British soap loving father. ★★★★★ From the pen of writer, actor and comedian Christopher Guest comes HBO's Family Tree, a mockumentary series that centre on one man's mission to find himself - one relative at a time. Fresh from his big screen success in Bridesmaids (2011) and The Sapphires (2012), Chris O'Dowd takes the lead as Tom Chadwick, a thirtysomething who finds purpose in a mysterious box of belongings inherited from a great aunt he had never met. The box sparks the beginning of a journey of self-discovery as Tom begins investigating his family lineage and uncovers a plethora of wild and wonderful characters along the way.
Beginning in London, Tom travels to his father's home with his sister Bea (Nina Conti) and her truth speaking, hand-puppet Monkey. When their father, Keith (Michael McKean) breaks the news of their aunties death, both siblings are thrilled to discover that they will receive some inheritance. What immediately appears to...
