Kiernan Shipka knows “The Last Showgirl” brings the first of many flowers for formerly overlooked Hollywood icon Pamela Anderson.
Shipka, who co-stars in the acclaimed indie feature, told IndieWire while promoting Jordan Weiss’ directorial debut rom-com “Sweethearts” that Anderson’s performance in “The Last Showgirl” “changed” her as an actress.
“Pamela Anderson is so incredible and wonderful in this film, and just I can’t wait for everyone to see her,” Shipka said. “It’s really a performance that changed me as a performer, and I’m just really lucky to be a part of it.”
Shipka added that her fellow showgirls Brenda Song and Jamie Lee Curtis are also “amazing” onscreen.
“The Last Showgirl” stars Anderson as Shelly, an aging Las Vegas dancer who finds herself at an unexpected crossroads when the show that has employed her for three decades suddenly closes. Shipka, Song, and Curtis are her fellow dancers.

Pamela Anderson in The Last Showgirl – Image courtesy of Roadside Attractions Throughout much of her career, Pamela Anderson wasn’t exactly best known for being a great actress. But, following the film festival rollout of her new film, The Last Showgirl, a funny thing has happened: The former “Baywatch babe” has been getting rave reviews for her performance in Gia Coppola’s movie. Speaking at the San Sebastian Film Festival, Anderson said that, once she read the script, she knew it was going to give her a chance to show a whole new side of her persona. Exclusive: Pamela Anderson says she has “danced between shame and beating myself up” — and she’s still here.
She has opened so many eyes with her stunning breakthrough performance, at age 57, playing Shelly, a veteran hoofer forced to hang up her heels in Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl. I think it’s one of the best screen performances of the year.
The breakthrough has been a long time coming. Even though Anderson cares not to dwell too much on her past, she embraces it for her art and has poured it into the role of Shelly.
“I wouldn’t change one thing about my life or I wouldn’t be here,” she declares.
“I’ve danced between shame and beating myself up about so many things or wondering what life would’ve been if I didn’t experience the things I did, even as a child, there’s so much,...

If you had any doubt that the awards season was in full swing, Sunday night’s 15th Annual Governors Awards ceremony answered it.
If you are, or in any way think you might have a shot at an Oscar nomination this year, and were in Los Angeles, it is most likely I might have run into you last night at Ovation’s Ray Dolby Ballroom where this jam packed ceremony saluting this year’s honorary Oscar recipients took place. In fact, just the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ PR team’s tip sheet was two pages of 207 single spaced names who were expected to attend (and by my count did) show up, not just to honor the deserving winners of the evening, but also perhaps to be in this place which is packed with Oscar voters who might be reminded to see your movie, if they haven’t done so already.

Pamela Anderson returns to the screen in The Last Showgirl, and the trailer for the film has landed. Right here.
Pamela Anderson will always be indelibly intertwined with Baywatch, the campy drama in which she starred for five series between between 1992 and 1997, returning for a cameo in the 2017 feature film.
But she also ventured into other films too. She starred in cult superhero film Barb Wire in 1996, and she also had a memorable cameo in Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat. In fact, she was one of the few actors in on the gag where the titular character attempts to marry her by ensconcing her in a sack and carrying her out of her book signing.
She has made only sporadic appearances onscreen in recent years though, but now Pamela Anderson is getting awards buzz for her leading performance in The Last Showgirl.

For Pamela Anderson, Gia Coppola’s drama The Last Showgirl was an opportunity she’d been awaiting for her entire life.
“It was such a relief to … be able to do a real film,” said the star, who rose to fame in Playboy and on Baywatch, in a sit-down Saturday at Deadline’s Contenders Los Angeles. “I mean, this is the first script I ever read that was a good one. No one was giving me scripts like this. … So I just poured everything I could into it because I thought, ‘What if this is the only film I ever get to do?'”
Written by Kate Gersten, whose way into the world of showgirls was a play about those working at the Las Vegas revue Jubilee!, The Last Showgirl follows Shelley (Anderson), a seasoned Vegas performer who faces an existential crisis when her show abruptly closes after a 30-year run.

While many “Deadpool & Wolverine” quips have become fan favorites, like Gambit’s “I’m boutta’ make a name for myself here,” star and screenwriter Ryan Reynolds has a more sentimental take on which lines were his favorite to write.
“The thing I’m probably most proud of was the Wolverine speech in the van where he just tears Deadpool a new one,” said Reynolds. “To me, it’s one of the most beautiful scenes in the movie because you see what a raw, visceral, powerhouse of an actor Hugh Jackman is. But you also see the roles reversed. You see a character who is never verbose, who is a Clint Eastwood archetype, suddenly going, ‘Oh yeah, man? Well, I can talk too.'”
Reynolds was one of the 25 people honored at Hamilton’s 13th annual Behind the Camera Awards, presented by Variety, which celebrates and recognizes the work of below-the-line filmmakers.

Pamela Anderson, the iconic bombshell and former Playboy model, gets a career resurgence in The Last Showgirl. At first look, it seems like a film tailored specifically for the actress, and it’s no surprise because she is actually the top choice for the lead role.

In the movie, she plays a veteran performer in Las Vegas who finds out her show closes abruptly after a successful 30-year run. It’s a story of finding life and purpose in middle age and reconnecting with the important people in our lives.

Apart from Pamela Anderson, Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl also features Jamie Lee Curtis, who portrays the role of a waitress and former showgirl. The actress, also an Academy Award recipient, did not forget to show off her transformation when she attended their first table read.

Sneak Peek footage from “The Last Showgirl” dramatic feature, directed by Gia Coppola, starring Pam Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka and Billie Lourd, opening January 10, 2025 in theaters:
“…for over thirty years, ‘Shelley’ (Anderson) has been a sleazy Las Vegas showgirl, the feather and crystal–adorned centrepiece of the last remaining traditional bimbo floor show. The stage and the women she shares it with are her loving, bickering, sequin-clad family.
“But when stage manager ‘Eddie’ announces the show will close permanently in two weeks, Shelley and her co-workers must make decisions for their future.
“The future looks different when you are a bagged-out 50 year old rather than a vibrant 20, and your sole job skill is dancing.

Toward the end of The Last Showgirl, Pamela Anderson stands alone and exposed on a stage, while, for perhaps the millionth time in her life, a man appraises and assesses her. Anderson’s character Shelly is auditioning for a Vegas show, trying to hold onto a job she has loved her whole life. But as she blinks under the bright spotlights, the director, played by Jason Schwartzman, tells her, “What you sold was young and sexy. You aren’t either anymore.”
This may be fiction, but, says Anderson, “I could feel it in my body.” The script told her to yell at that director, “I’m 50!” But in that moment, Anderson decided to insert her real age into the line: “I’m 57 and I’m beautiful, you son of a bitch!” As that scene played at the Toronto Film Festival premiere, from the darkness of the theater came calls of,...

Pamela Anderson had no idea that another pop culture icon, Beyoncé, would pay tribute to her. Anderson, who’s been earning raves in her role as a veteran Vegas performer in the upcoming film “The Last Showgirl,” told Variety that Beyoncé’s “Beywatch” video (in which she channels Anderson) — and the attention that ensued — was completely unexpected. “I had no idea she was going to do that,” Anderson says. “I saw it at the same time everybody else did.”

The 2023 documentary “Pamela, A Love Story” showcased Pamela Anderson’s career in a new light, highlighting her talent that shone through the frequently unfair setbacks that she faced. The project found its way to Gia Coppola, who was inspired to cast Anderson in her latest directorial effort, “The Last Showgirl.”
“I could see this artist that was so creative and so knowledgeable of art and philosophy and just the way she approached life,” Coppola said of Anderson at a recent Q&a promoting the film. “And how vulnerable she was, not really wearing makeup in the documentary, so I could see that this was a person who was fearless. I just really wanted to collaborate with her. I could see her hunger to kind of express her talents in a dramatic way.”

What happens if you stay in Vegas? That’s the question at the center of Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl,” which has debuted its first trailer from Roadside Attractions. Set against the backdrop of Sin City, the film sees Pamela Anderson starring as Shelley, a veteran showgirl who finds herself at a crossroads with her stage production on its last legs.
Kiernan Shipka, Brenda Song, Billie Lourd, Dave Bautista and Jamie Lee Curtis also star. Curtis plays a waitress and confidante to Anderson’s character, delivering a performance that Peter Debruge, Variety’s chief film critic, described as a “force-of-nature.” Bautista plays Shelley’s manager and ex-lover, who breaks the news about the end of her career. Shipka and Song play two colleague showgirls moving on to greener pastures. Lourd plays Anderson’s daughter, Hannah.

When filmmaker Gia Coppola set about casting the lead of her third film, “The Last Showgirl,” finding her titular Las Vegas showgirl initially posed quite a conundrum. Coppola’s film follows Shelly, a longtime performer whose entire life is thrown into disarray when her show, the last of its kind on The Strip, is set to close. It’s a deeply felt character study about a singular woman, a part that required old-school glamour and hard-won smarts.
“I couldn’t really envision who was right for the role of Shelly. I kind of would think of Marilyn Monroe or actors that were no longer present, no one else really felt right,” Coppola said during a Sunday evening post-screening Q&a in New York City.
And then she found the 2023 Netflix documentary “Pamela, a Love Story,” which reorients our understanding of Pamela Anderson. The Ryan White film sets the record straight on...

With her third film, “The Last Showgirl,” filmmaker Gia Coppola takes audiences inside the inner workings (and inner feelings) of the talented showgirls who populate a long-running Las Vegas show that is unexpectedly closing after a decades-long run. Starring Pamela Anderson in a revelatory lead role as the last showgirl in question, the film was shot on location in just 18 days, and is filled with attention to detail (and a little magic) that brings us inside this special world.
For the film’s stars, that also included wearing real showgirl costumes, learning the ropes from real showgirls, and steeping themselves in some key “dos and don’ts.”
“The costumes were museum pieces by Bob Mackie, they hadn’t been outside the theater in 30 years, so it was a real honor to wear them,” Anderson said during a Sunday evening post-screening Q&a in New York City. “Some of the costumes still...

As Pamela Anderson makes her long-overdue onscreen comeback, Gia Coppola is comparing the actress to another blonde bombshell.
The Last Showgirl director was inspired by performers like Anderson and Marilyn Monroe when helming the Kate Gersten-penned film, which premieres Dec. 13 in theaters, after seeing the former’s 2023 Netflix documentary Pamela, a Love Story.
“It was all these actresses from the past I would dream about: Wouldn’t this be an interesting role for Marilyn Monroe?” Coppola told Entertainment Weekly of casting the movie.
In The Last Showgirl, Anderson stars as Shelley, a Vegas dancer who finds herself at a frightening crossroads when her show is cancelled after a 38-year run and she is told she’s too old to join a new show. Meanwhile, she tries to reconnect with her daughter Hannah (Billie Lourd), while maintaining the other relationships in her life and plotting her future.

The show Baywatch has become a staple in pop culture and has received widespread popularity around the world. The series is known for its ensemble cast of actors, bright red swimsuits, running scenes, and ridiculous storylines. Though it was initially canceled after the first season, its syndicated run made it the most-watched TV show in the world.
The highlight of the series is its ensemble cast of actors who have become prominent stars now. From David Hasselhoff to Yasmine Bleeth, many actors had their breakthrough with Baywatch. They have gone on to do a diverse range of work since the end of the series in 2001.
1. David Hasselhoff – Mitch Buchannon David Hasselhoff in Baywatch | Credits: NBC
Probably the most well-known (behind Pamela Anderson) of the cast, David Hasselhoff played the lead, Captain Buchannon, in Baywatch. The actor appeared in the most number of episodes in the series, starring in over 206 episodes.

As we get closer to the end of 2024 and various critics and voting bodies collate their year-end lists and ballots, the question of what is eligible for such selection often crops up. It’s become common practice for distributors to give a quiet, one-week awards-qualifying run divorced from the standard promotion a theatrical rollout will earn, instead saving that for a window early the following year.
To help keep better track of these releases, we’ve started a feature detailing films designated in this category. Pamela Anderson on the role of Shelley in The Last Showgirl: 'I just relate to the character so much and I really worked on it drawing from personal experience' Photo: Courtesy of San Sebastian Film Festival/Jorge Fuembuena With Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl, Pamela Anderson becomes the latest older star to have the opportunity to reframe herself and show her acting mettle at the movies. In a role that puts you in mind of Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler, the former Baywatch star plays Shelley, a dancer who is facing major life choices as the Vegas show she has performed in for decades is marked for closure. In addition to facing up to life away from the stage, Shelley, whose friend Annette (Jamie Lee Curtis) is also facing up to ageing, is trying to reconnect with her adult daughter Hannah (Billie Lourd).

After spending months talking about his long-nurtured dream project, Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola embraced the chance to depart from promo tour talking points.
Calling Megaloplis “a great adventure,” Coppola affirmed with a smile in accepting his DGA Honor on Thursday night, “I decided tonight I wouldn’t say anything I’ve been saying.”
After being given the award by his granddaughter, Gia, Coppola said he was delighted to spin yarns about “how the Director’s Guild was founded.” While he didn’t do so in linear fashion, the 85-year-old filmmaker had the audience in the palm of his hand as he recounted giants of cinema and his personal touchstones, paying tribute to masters like Billy Wilder, King Vidor and Samuel Goldwyn.
When he met Jean Renoir, Coppola recalled, the French filmmaker gave him a “beautiful smile” and shook his hand “like he was welcoming me to this profession that he loved so much.
