Keanu Reeves' Dark Satire 'The Entertainment System Is Down' Takes Flight
Image
In some exciting news for Keanu Reeves fans, principal photography has commenced for Ruben Östlund's next film, The Entertainment System Is Down. Much like his previous work, Triangle of Sadness, the movie is set to be a dark satirical film with an impressive ensemble cast. The movie stars the John Wick actor alongside Kirsten Dunst, and Daniel Brühl, and filming is set to start in Budapest and last 70 days, concluding sometime around May (via Deadline). Given that the director's previous film was awarded the Palme d'Or in 2022, there is plenty of hype surrounding the movie.

The Entertainment System Is Down centers around passengers on a flight who are informed that, as the title implies, the in-flight entertainment system is no longer working. Now lacking any distractions over a long flight, the passengers are forced to confront boredom, and perhaps even some personal reflection, as the social dynamics of a...

Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down begins production
Ruben Östlund
Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down – a dark satire starring Kirsten Dunst, Keanu Reeves and Daniel Brühl – has now started filming.

Here’s a project that has sounded rather enticing, ever since it was first announced in April of last year. Ruben Östlund, the filmmaker behind Force Majeure and Triangle Of Sadness has assembled an exciting cast for what looks to be a story examining the darker impulses of human nature.

A24 is backing The Entertainment System Is Down, and the boutique studio is really backing Östlund in what we’re hoping retains the filmmaker’s arthouse sensibilities while also appealing to a broader audience. As well as footing the bill for an incredible ensemble of acting talent, A24 has also backed the purchase of a retired Boeing 747 for the film, which is presumably sitting on a studio backlot somewhere in Budapest as Östlund uses it to make his movie.

10 Best British Spy TV Shows
Image
Britain's television landscape has often been linked with gritty characters, compelling storylines, and complex dramas, with no genre embodying those traits quite like an iconic British spy series. The British fiction's fascination with spies and espionage can be traced back to Ian Fleming's iconic James Bond character from 1953, which garnered worldwide attention and acclaim. Though other countries produce quality works in the genre, the British versions tend to have a biting dialogue mixed with intricate, layered narratives that create some of the most intense, thrilling shows of all time.

Uniquely British spy series from older generations, such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, shows the complexity of the genre and the underlying tension and psychological pressures that agents must endure on their missions. Modern series like the beloved Killing Eve show a different layer to the genre, with a more quirky and comical tone that is still punctuated with moments...

Breaking Baz: Gary Oldman, ‘Slow Horses’ Star & Oscar Winner, Will Return To British Stage After 4-Decade Absence In 2025
Image
Exclusive: Slow Horses star Gary Oldman is stepping back on stage in April 2025 for the first time after an absence of nearly four decades to star in Samuel Beckett’s celebrated one-man play Krapp’s Last Tape for a limited season at the British theatre where the actor began his professional career in 1979.

Oldman, who won an Oscar for Darkest Hour, is in London shooting season 6 of the acclaimed Apple TV+ spy drama Slow Horses. He will play Beckett’s famous old-timer, struggling to listen to a tape he recorded 39 years ago, at York Theatre Royal in North Yorkshire from April 14 through May 17.

There are no plans to transfer the production to London’s West End or Broadway, Douglas Urbanski, the actor’s longtime business partner and manager, told me when I tracked him down in the early hours of Wednesday in London.

In performing Beckett’s 1958 classic, Oldman retraces...

The Big Bang Theory’s Kunal Nayyar will star in Gurinder Chadha’s next film, Christmas Karma. It’s due out this December.

News has emerged about Gurinder Chadha’s next project, confirmed to be an adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

Titled Christmas Karma, the film will star Kunal Nayyar as Scrooge. He’ll be joined by an ensemble cast that includes Eva Longoria, Boy George, Billy Porter, Hugh Bonneville, Leo Suter, Charithra Chandran, Pixie Lott, Danny Dyer, Bilal Hasna, Allan Corduner, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Rufus Jones, Eve, and Nitin Ganatra.

Family Filmmaker & Star On The Real Horror Of Family Drama And Autobiographical Storytelling [SXSW]
Image
Family is a chilling horror drama about an 11-year-old girl who calls out for help, but brings terror into her home. Ben Finkel's personal experience inspired the movie, crafting an emotional journey through illness and possession. Cameron Dawson Gray's performance as the lead brought depth to the film, blending drama and horror seamlessly.

One of the best trends in recent horror cinema continues with Family, which just premiered at South By Southwest. Written and directed by Ben Finkel in his feature debut, the horror drama centers on Johanna, an 11-year-old girl who has just moved across the country with her parents as her father undergoes medical treatment to deal with his declining condition. When the lonely protagonist calls out into the universe for a good spirit to bring her family better tidings, she inadvertently invites a more terrifying entity into her home.

‘Family’ SXSW Review – Arthouse Horror Movie About Grief and Fear Induces Visceral Chills
Image
The attention-grabbing opening scene in writer/director Benjamin Finkel’s Family effectively establishes the film’s peculiar, esoteric, yet bone-chilling tone. Evoking Relic or Ari Aster’s Hereditary, the cold open sees preteen protagonist Johanna (Cameron Dawson Gray) banging on the locked doors of a synagogue, pleading to be let in, only for her mother, Naomi (Ruth Wilson), to stalk across the lawn, drag her out into it, then stab her. Without any explanation or context, Family cuts to a less volatile time, unfurling a strange, unwieldy slice of arthouse horror that’s heightened by Finkel’s knack for viscerally disturbing horror and imagery.

The eleven-year-old Johanna, an only child homeschooled by her mom, has recently been uprooted to mom’s creaky old childhood home for closer access to medical care for her father, Harry (Ben Chaplin), who’s slowly deteriorating from cancer. Things are stable enough to start, but...

‘Family’ Review: Violence Against Children Is Front-and-Center in Disturbing Horror Film
Image
Once a taboo broken only by the boldest of directors, violence against children has become increasingly common in horror films. Credit (or blame) for this phenomenon — at least in its more recent incarnations — goes to “Hereditary,” a movie that boldly broke the once-sacred familial contract. There’s bound to be diminishing returns when other filmmakers start taking inspiration from such transgressions, however. Six years later, that brings us to “Family,” premiering at the 2024 edition of SXSW.

Directed by first-timer Benjamin Finkel, the film treads similar thematic territory to Aster’s film, but inverted, with a sci-fi/horror twist. “Family” begins with a quick, disturbing cold open, as 11-year-old Johanna (Cameron Dawson Gray) desperately bangs on the window of a building we later learn is the temple where her grandfather (Allan Corduner) serves as a rabbi. Then her mother (Ruth Wilson) comes up behind her, grabs her by her ankle, and...

‘The Offering’ Review

Stars: Allan Corduner, Paul Kaye, Nick Blood, Emm Wiseman, Jonathan Yunger | Written by Hank Hoffman | Directed by Oliver Park

In the wake of a young Jewish girl’s disappearance, the son of a Hasidic funeral director returns home with his pregnant wife in hopes of reconciling with his father. Little do they know that directly beneath them in the family morgue, an ancient evil with sinister plans for the unborn child lurks inside a mysterious corpse.

Alright January, you’re really scaring me now. First we got a truly great horror film in the form of Gerard Johnstone’s M3gan and now we have a decently enjoyable paranormal/supernatural horror film in the form of Oliver Park‘s The Offering, which surprised me considerably.

Usually, January is filled with the most embarrassingly bad horror movies imaginable, but for some reason, this year is an exception. While it doesn’t do anything crazy or new,...

Microbudget Horror ‘Skinamarink’ Creeps Onto 600+ Screens – Specialty Preview
Image
Shudder and IFC Midnight are launching microbudget Skinamarink on a not-so-micro 629 screens, giving the viral horror pic a major push after a well-received premiere back at Fantasia-fest that just kept snowballing with strong reviews and social media love.

“I was over the moon. For a horror filmmaker in Canada, [Fantasia] is like getting a Cannes screening,” says first-time filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball about the leadup to this weekend’s buzzy specialty opening. He shot the 15k feature at his parents’ home in Edmonton, Canada.

In it, two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished. “I’d had a nightmare when I was little. I was in my parents’ house, my parents were missing, and there was a monster. And lots of people have shared this exact same dream,” Ball tells Deadline.

Tár review: Cate Blanchett is at her best in a nuanced take on #MeToo and cancel culture
Image
Cate Blanchett swallows Tár whole and spits out bullets in return. The role, of a fictional classical conductor somersaulting into her own downfall, was written by director Todd Field solely with her in mind. It’s a performance that functions as a total culmination, the crystallised form of all the women Blanchett’s played in the past – from Elizabeth I to Lilith in Nightmare Alley – who act like they have total control but may actually be hollow on the inside. Sometimes, all that’s needed is a single shot of those ice-blue eyes. A little tension in the muscles and they take on a self-satisfied feeling of mastery over their subject.

It’s not required that we sympathise with Blanchett’s Lydia Tàr. Her talent is plain – she’s a protégée of Leonard Bernstein and is one of the few winners of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award – but she’s also cruel,...

The Offering (2022)
Out of nightmare by Jennie Kermode
The Offering (2022)
The Offering

A portrait of a troubled family facing more than one kind of crisis, Oliver Park’s The Offering mixes Jewish mysticism, horror, and the social difficulties which arise when a young Jewish man leaves the Hasidic community to take a gentile wife. He (Nick Blood) longs to reconcile with his father, Saul (Allan Corduner), but the situation is further complicated by his urgent need for money, which has him considering the potential value of the family home and the mortuary business beneath it. It’s his pregnant wife Claire (Emily Wiseman) who actually gets close to his father, as each of them strives to adapt to make room for the other – but when the body of a man with a dark secret is brought in to the mortuary, a threat emerges which changes everything.

Beautifully crafted performances, stunning set design and great attention to detail all round make this one.

‘The Offering’ Review: Jewish Mysticism Gets the Reverse ‘Exorcism’ Treatment
Image
From the moment that God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son,” the idea of shedding one’s own blood in pursuit of spiritual cleansing never entirely left our collective subconscious. Dead children, hungry divinities, and humans asked to make impossible sacrifices are ideas that appear again and again in our best horror movies. So it’s only fitting that they’re finally being explored in a film about the original Abrahamic religion.

Just like the darkest parts of Christian mythology have been the stuff of Hollywood nightmares for as long as there have been movies, director Oliver Park’s reverse-exorcism thriller “The Offering” puts Judaism in the spotlight.

Arthur (Nick Blood) is a handsome young realtor raised in a strict Hasidic environment but who drifted away from the community after he married a gentile and his father refused to attend the wedding. But with his wife Claire (Emily Wiseman...

‘The Offering’ Review: An Age-Old Demon Invades a Jewish Funeral Home in a Diverting But Obvious Horror
Image
Despite 2019’s “The Vigil” making a modest splash amongst genre fans, the annals of Jewish horror movies remain pretty thin. Adding a page to those ranks is The Offering,” which actually has considerable overlap with that recent predecessor — it, too, is about a shape-shifting demon who preys on the living after the death of its latest host, whose corpse is on the premises awaiting burial.

English helmer Oliver Park’s debut feature is the slicker, somewhat showier affair of the two. But while diverting enough, it lacks that predecessor’s atmospheric dread and psychological plausibility, resulting in a jump-scare-riddled contraption ultimately more cheesy than frightening. Neon division Decal is opening the Bulgaria-shot U.S. production in 20+ U.S.markets on Jan. 13, simultaneous with its release on digital platforms.

Introductory onscreen text informs us of “one terrifying female demon” present in “myths of the Near East and Europe” at least as...

Sam Mendes Casts Johnny Flynn, Tuppence Middleton & Mark Gatiss As Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor & John Gielgud In Hot New Play
Image
Exclusive: Sam Mendes has picked Johnny Flynn, Tuppence Middleton and Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss to portray legendary stars Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and John Gielgud in The Motive and the Cue, a mouth-watering new play by Jack Thorne that explores how acting giants Burton and Gielgud staged Hamlet on Broadway in 1964.

Burton, newly wed to Taylor after their affair on the set of epic film Cleopatra, signed on to play the Danish prince in a fabled production directed by Gielgud in New York.

On opening night in April, 1964, scores of police hemmed in crowds who were as eager to catch a glimpse of Taylor entering the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre as they were to see her husband as the depressed Dane.

(Original Caption) Welsh actor, Richard Burton (left), listens intently as he takes direction from director, John Gielgud, during rehearsal of Burton’s Broadway-bound production of “Hamlet,...

Todd Field’s Return With Tár, Cannes Winner ‘Triangle Of Sadness’ Lead Busy Arthouse Weekend – Specialty Preview
Image
Today Focus Features opens Tár, the strikingly original return of Todd Field, in four locations in NY and LA. The film premiered at Venice winning star Cate Blanchett Best Actress as musician and conductor Lydia Tár. Early this week, it seemed to mesmerize a sold-out Alice Tully Hall at the New York Film Festival.

A 97 with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Deadline’s review here called Field’s first film since Little Children 16 years ago, a “daring and quite comprehensive immersion in a rarified world [that] features a lead performance the likes of which doesn’t come along very often.” Field wrote the part for Blanchett but at an NYFF Q&a he said he waited to send her the script until it was done and Focus chairman Peter Kujawski “asked me, ‘Who do you have in mind?’ I said I was still thinking about it. Because I was superstitious. That she would say no.

The Offering - Jennie Kermode - 17925
Actor, Oliver Park, preparing for a crucial scene ...
The need to adapt to a changing world and the need to stay connected to ancient things collide in Oliver Park’s chilling second feature film, which screened at Fantastic Fest 2022. Rooted in the challenges of combining an ancient way of life with modern values, it’s also a story about the many kinds of love which exist within families, and how sometimes the most sympathetic of motives are what lead us astray.

Art (Nick Blood) hasn’t been to see his father Saul (Allan Corduner) for several years. Though one suspects that the reasons why they have found themselves at odds run deeper, the ostensible cause of it is Claire (Emily Wiseman), the gentile woman whom Art has chosen to marry. She is now pregnant and keen to find a way of bringing the family back together. Art, however, has another motive for returning, stemming from a crisis which he has.

Image
Focus Features’ fascinating new trailer for TÁR feels like an “For Your Consideration” reel promoting two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett for Best Actress. Blanchett’s sure to be busy this upcoming awards season; she’s already earned the Best Actress award at the 2022 Venice Film Festival for her performance as composer/conductor Lydia Tár.

RogerEbert.com’s Tomris Laffly calls it “a film of rare elegance and sophistication,” and Entertainment Weekly’s Leah Greenblatt describes Blanchett’s work as feeling “less like a performance than a full-body possession.”

The cast also includes Noémie Merlant, Nina Hoss, Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover, Allan Corduner, and Mark Strong. Todd Field, Alexandra Milchan, and Scott Lambert served as producers.

TÁR opens in select theaters on October 7, 2022 followed by a nationwide release on October 28th.

Fantastic Fest 2022: ‘The Offering’ Review
Image
Stars: Nick Blood, Allan Corduner, Emily Wiseman, Paul Kaye, Daniel Ben Zenou | Written by Hank Hoffman | Directed by Oliver Park

Originally shot as Abyzou, The Offering begins with the camera slowly moving through rooms filled with candles and symbols. A rooster jumps into view, only to have its throat cut as part of a ritual. But this isn’t some voodoo ceremony or satanic offering, this is Hasidic mysticism. And, like so many other forms of magic, it doesn’t end well for the practitioner.

Art has come home, hoping to reconcile with his much more Orthodox father Saul. His wife Claire. has come along as well, although being told “Art may love you, but you’ll never be family” has made her less than enthusiastic about the trip. They hope the prospect of a grandchild will soften his attitude. We soon find out that the old man has indeed softened his opinions about Claire.

Fantastic Fest 2022 Review: The Offering’s Thoughtful Interpretation of Jewish Folklore Makes it a Frightening, Memorable Addition to the Haunted House Subgenre
Image
There are countless horror movies dealing with various kinds of demons and possession, but not very many that take the time to explore and showcase ancient Jewish lore and demonology. The first movie that comes to mind is 2019’s The Vigil, a terrifying and consummate film about a young man in Brooklyn’s Hasidic Borough who agrees to fulfill the duties of a shomer, which in Judaism is someone who watches over a deceased person until burial. Written by Hank Hoffman and Jonathan Yunger and directed by Oliver Park, The Offering is also set in Brooklyn’s Hasidic community and takes a deep dive into Kabbalah lore and demonology. The Offering is Park’s feature film directorial debut and premiered at this year’s Fantastic Fest. The Offering skillfully blends traditional Jewish lore with the haunted house subgenre and the result is a genuinely scary experience.
