The longevity of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" has been fascinating to behold. Beginning on Minnesota public access television in 1988, Joel Hodgson's watch-bad-movies-with-sarcastic-buddies cult TV series has deeply entrenched itself into the collected Jungian lore of every Gen-Xer worth their weight in flannel. For much of its life, "MST3K" lived either on Ktma in Minneapolis or, when it became more successful, running at midnight on Comedy Central.
Throughout, the show famously included the phrase "Keep circulating the tapes" in its credits. That was an acknowledgement from the show's producers that world-of-mouth and shared VHS recordings of "MST3K" were responsible for its modest cultural foothold. Fans would call friends, mail them cassettes, and implore that the cult grow. In 2008, when "MST3K" was finally made widely available through DVD box sets, Dr. Forrester/Crow T. Robot actor Trace Beaulieu said in an Av Club interview to "Keep circulating some of the tapes.

"Mystery Science Theater 3000" officially ended its run in 1999, but never really went away.
The "watching bad movies with several funny friends" premise was simply too good to leave behind, and every cast member on the show participated in "MST3K"-like projects for years thereafter. The show's creator, Joel Hodgson, teamed up with Mary Jo Pehl, Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, and J. Elvis Weinstein to create "Cinematic Titanic," a riffing show wherein the cast was seen in silhouette, like on "MST3K," and were beholden to an evil, ill-defined corporate entity. Meanwhile, Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy formed "The Film Crew" wherein the...

Fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 are certainly familiar with RiffTrax, where MST3K alumni Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett pick on cheesy movies by creating play along audio files and occasionally taking their show on the road, doing live events that are beamed to theaters all around the country.

The latest RiffTrax Live Kickstarter is in full effect with three movies on the menu, including an MST3K classic.
Watching RiffTrax tends to be a pretty great time, but nothing beats a good ol’ edition of RiffTrax Live. This tradition has lasted a good ten years, starting with Plan 9 From Outer Space back in 2009. Every year, Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett watch some bad movies (or a bunch of bizarre shorts) in front of an audience and the whole thing is broadcast to hundreds of different movie theaters via Fathom Events.
Why, you can read more about it in my Complete History of RiffTrax Live!
The thing about these events is that they’re usually preceded with a big Kickstarter campaign to fund the shows. Originally, back in 2013, they tried to do a Kickstarter to fund a RiffTrax Live for Twilight (one of...

In the not too distant past — November 24th, 1988, A.D. — a moderately successful stand-up comedian named Joel Hodgson slipped on a jumpsuit. He then spent a few hours on a Minneapolis Uhf station making fun of the terrible movies Invaders from the Deep and Revenge of the Mysterions from Mars, alongside a couple of handmade robot puppets. Only a handful of lucky Minnesotans were watching Ktma that Thanksgiving night, exactly 30 years ago. They all saw the birth of a pop culture phenomenon: a charmingly cheap-looking show that, no joke, changed television.

Since 2009, the guys from MST3K have given us many theatrical get-togethers featuring so many bad movies as RiffTrax.
In 1996, Universal Pictures released Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie. While it’s gone on to find love in the aftermath, the whole situation was handled badly in many ways and it ended up being a box office dud. The idea was solid, though. If MST3K worked so well on TV and gathered such a fanbase, it would probably be an extra great experience to enjoy its style in a movie theater surrounded by other laughing fans.
Ten years later, long after MST3K seemed gone for good, Mike Nelson created his own take on bad movie riffing called RiffTrax. It gained steam thanks to the help of his old running buddies Kevin Murphy, Bill Corbett, as well as celebrity guests like Neil Patrick Harris and Joel McHale.

It's always a good time to check out RiffTrax, but with Halloween being here, there are certain targets that need to be seen.
As we all know, October is the time to watch scary movies. More often than not, that means having to watch really bad scary movies. If you’re going to watch some really bad movies, then you might as well have it accompanied by professional jokes from professional comedy professionals. Enter RiffTrax, the long-running website that stars Mystery Science Theater 3000 mainstays Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy. Having been around for over a decade, those guys have tackled all sorts of movies about killers and creeps and disco-dancing Draculas.
Here are thirteen targets that I highly suggest checking out. I’m going with all VOD movies because that’s how I roll. Also know that there’s a good chunk of these available on Amazon Prime.

The RiffTrax gang of Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett are back again, this time taking on Replica, an as-yet-unreleased film from the writer/director of Birdemic: Shock And Terror, James Nguyen. The former Mystery Science Theater 3000 jokesters and director Ngyuen talked exclusively with The A.V. Club about Replica, intentional camp, and why filmmakers let these guys put their films through the wringer.
“There’s probably been some release for everything we’ve done,” Nelson says on the unprecedented move of taking on a film that’s never been released to the public. “We had a strong suspicion that Replica would be good. We heard from Mr. Ngyuen that, unlike his other films, this one was more of an immature vision and that made us lick our chops. ‘Wait a minute, there’s a film that’s worse than Birdemic?’”

The RiffTrax gang will be back in theaters this December, thanks to Fathom Events. Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy will be putting poor Dropo through the wringer once again as they rebroadcast their 2013 riff on the Mystery Science Theater 3000 favorite Santa Claus Conquers The Martians. In an A.V. Right on the heels of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 reunion held in Minneapolis last month, the RiffTrax gang is back with two new shows. First, Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett will be taking on 1961’s kaiju klassic Mothra in a previously-announced live event on August 18. And then, just in time for Halloween, the RiffTrax team will be revisiting Herk Harvey’s Carnival Of Souls, a low-budget schlocker from 1962 that influenced the films of George Romero and David Lynch. The RiffTrax event will mark the first time the full-color restored version of Carnival Of Souls will be shown on the big screen.

The big announcement was made at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday - Netflix will be streaming the Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt-led Mystery Science Theater 3000 revival. Creator Joel Hodgson launched a Kickstarter campaign back in 2015 which eventually gained over $5.7 million in funding from fans (just beating the previous record by the Veronica Mars film). Pretty quickly they rounded up a cast which included Day as Kinga, Oswalt as TV's Son of TV's Frank, Hampton Yount as Crow T. Robot, Baron Vaughn as Tom Servo, and Jonah Ray as host. Hodgson followed up the Netflix announcement on his Twitter by adding that Kevin Murphy, Mary Jo Pehl, and Bill Corbett would also be appearing as themselves in the next MST3K and that he would also have a cameo. "Elliott Kalan, the Emmy-winning former head writer of The Daily Show, will serve as the head writer on MST3K," reports The Hollywood Reporter,...

2016-07-24T12:06:19-07:00New 'Mystery Science Theater' Coming to Netflix
Netflix announced this weekend that it will air a revival of the comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000. The announcement was greeted happily by most fans, but it caused mixed emotions in some who see the series' deal with Netflix as unnecessary after a recent Kickstarter campaign had already provided funding for a revival of the show.
No details were available about Netflix's version of the series, but series creator Joel Hodgson had already raised $5.7 million in a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund a 14-episode revival season.
The new incarnation of the show is set to star Patton Oswalt, Felicia Day and Jonah Ray, along with original cast members Mary Jo Pehl, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy. Hodgson will produce and write the series, with help from Community's Dan Harmon and Joel McHale.

In December, after the movie-mocking cult TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000 raised an astounding $5.7 million in a Kickstarter campaign to produce new episodes, creator Joel Hodgson told Rolling Stone he hoped to have some news regarding the revival in time for Comic-Con. On Saturday at the San Diego event, Netflix announced that the 14 new episodes of MST3K would head to the streaming service "in the not-too-distant future."
Hodgson is back on board overseeing all facts of the revival, with comedian Jonah Ray and actress Felicia Day also cast in the series.

Netflix is reviving yet another cult favorite. New episodes of”Mystery Science Theater 3000,” in which a captive man and his robot friends offer live commentary on amusingly bad B movies, will head to the streaming service in the “not too distant future,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. Patton Oswalt is attached to star as Son of TV’s Frank.

Hammer horror fans are in for a treat, as respective collections of five William Castle films and five Hammer horror movies are coming out on Blu-ray in August, and The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant has been set to come out on Blu-ray.
The William Castle and Hammer horror collections will respectively come out on DVD August 18th from Mill Creek. The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant, meanwhile, is slated for release later this year by Kino Lorber. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for further updates.
From Mill Creek: "Iconic horror director William Castle created a simple, but winning formula for his films: a little comedy, a lot of scares, a preposterous gimmick, and a clear sense that fright films should be fun. This even meant Castle would, like Alfred Hitchcock, appear in his trailers and even the movies themselves. The brainchild of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" alumnus Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy (aka Tom Servo) and Bill Corbett (aka Crow T. Robot), Rifftrax skewers cult classic films with hilarious live commentary. The crew hit the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday evening for their first-ever New York performance, where the Rifftrax gang unleashed their signature comedic chops on Tommy Wiseau's "The Room." Before taking the stage for a packed house, the trio thanked "Bobby D" (Robert De Niro) for inviting them to the festival, and riffed on a short safety film from the 1950s. If you weren't able to catch the performance at Tribeca, don't worry, Rifftrax will be doing four other live shows this year, including "The Room," that will be broadcast into movie theaters nationwide. You can find more information on the Rifftrax Live website. Before the hilarious event, Indiewire sat down with the trio to look back on "MST3K" and dig into.

The Tribeca Film Festival has always featured macabre offerings for horror hounds to enjoy, and this year is no exception. A poignant zombie drama starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Abigail Breslin (which was originally scheduled to premiere at last year's Tiff), a mutated wasps creature feature co-starring Lance Henriksen and Clifton Collins Jr., and Adrián García Bogliano's darkly humorous kidnapping tale are just a few films on the onscreen scare slate for the 14th Annual Tribeca Film Festival.

When Ian Ziering’s character Fin raised his chainsaw and leaped at the jaws of a flying shark in Syfy’s Sharknado, it no doubt caused all kinds of comments in both viewers’ homes and on their Twitter accounts. But perhaps a few people watching the intentional B-movie wondered what side-splitting remarks the guys from Mystery Science Theater 3000 would have made during that scene and throughout the entire film. Well, wonder no more: a live recording of Sharknado commentary from three former members of MST3K will take place in just two weeks, and further commemorating the shark-filled cyclone flick is a Sharknado Pop! vinyl figure from Funko.

As if the new Godzilla didn’t already dance on the grave of the disastrous 1998 American reboot, the Rifftrax crew is coming to a theater near you to kick the corpse. The ’98 Godzilla will be getting the Rifftrax Live treatment this August all because you made it possible.

Bill Corbett of RiffTrax would like you to know that he and his colleagues do not dislike nature. Even if the RiffTrax crew will be bringing their hilarious commentary to a handful of National Geographic specials on Tuesday (April 1), it all comes from a place of love.
And let's face it -- some parts of nature are as weird as any of the bad movies usually spoofed by RiffTrax and by "Mystery Science Theater 3000" before it.
Zap2it spoke to Corbett about this new RiffTrax project, "Total Riff Off," and it's definitely something you do not want to miss.
Zap2i: How did this partnership with National Geographic happen, and what are you planning to do to them?
Bill Corbett: We're taking some of the programming that they already had. We left that sort of up to them -- they gave us a bunch of stuff that we could choose from.

RiffTrax is taking over the National Geographic channel, and it's looking to be kind of incredible. With Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett providing a joke track to documentaries about shellfish, bats and birds, how could it not be?
The "Mystery Science Theater 3000"-style takeover begins at 8 p.m. Et on April 1 with "Killer Shrimp N'Friends." "Demon Bat" follows at 9 p.m., and "Guy and a Goose" finishes off the RiffTrax marathon at 10 p.m.
While jokes and footage from the three full-length documentaries have not yet been released, you can get a sense of what's to come in the koala video above.
Warning: Koalas are horrible, disgusting, diseased creatures that are very much Nsfw.

Robot (Bill Corbett) made snide, droll and almost always dead-on comments as the movie played in the background. They've continued to crack wise on their web site, Rifftrax.com, since leaving the...
