Blanquiazul, from director Luis Castro Serrano, is the first Peruvian wide release of 2015. It's also a documentary, a genre which has been largely neglected by local directors (and distributors), save for Javier Corcuera, whose Sigo Siendo, about our country's musicians, got a well-received, rare theatrical release in 2013.Founded in 1901, Alianza Lima is one of the most popular soccer teams in the national league. Its rabid fanbase has stuck it out with the squad through highs and lows, and this movie is intended as a simple, moving tribute to those people who put on the official colors of blue and white every week and head out to the stadium to cheer on the players.Even though the national team hasn't been to a World Cup...

The Vancouver International Film Festival is my baby. In its 29th year, this is the event I look forward to every year. The lists I've kept through the year come out and I eagerly look through the list of titles in search of those little gems and every year Viff responds with a huge assortment of titles. This year's festival is no different.
Some of the titles we're most eagerly anticipating include Tsumetai Nettaigyo’s Cold Fish (trailer), Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (trailer, review), Jo Sung-Hee’s apocalyptic road movie End of Animal, Carl Bessai’s Repeaters (trailer) and Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats (trailer, review).
There's loads more so be sure to check the titles (so far) after the break. Many more to be announced in the coming days.

- edro Almodóvar and Guillermo del Toro you can both breathe a sign of relief. Spanish cinema is rejuvenated. The split-screen/drama that was premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at last year's Cannes (I'm guilty for having fallen asleep to this one: victim of watching one too many films and not necessarily the film itself) has walked away from Spain's equivalent to the Oscar with top honors: Best Film and Best Director. Jaime Rosales' La Soledad (Solitary Fragments) (two parallel urban stories highlighting the fragility and simplicity of human existence) beat out the heavy favorite The Orphanage (the Picturehouse-released pic that investigates the power the dead have over the living, especially over children in the most imaginative and vulnerable stages).
