When a third Tron movie finally got the greenlight, there was one big question that fans asked above all others. Not whether any legacy characters would return, nor what the latest evolution of the Grid would be. No, the most important question was: who’ll do the soundtrack? That’s because Tron: Legacy featured a legendary score courtesy of Daft Punk, one that electrified the film’s highlights, picking up the baton from synth pioneer Wendy Carlos and her work on the original Tron. But since Daft Punk have gone their separate ways in the intervening years, who could possibly step up next? The answer turned out to be perfect: Nine Inch Nails. Not a Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score; one specifically from their industrial alter-egos.

The ask first came from Tom MacDougall, President of Walt Disney Music, in the wake of Reznor and Ross’s work on Pixar’s Soul.

The cast and crew of the forthcoming live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch are celebrating its upcoming release at the El Capitan Theatre on Saturday (May 17) in Hollywood!

Lilo & Stitch is the story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family. Maia Kealoha plays Lilo, while Chris Sanders voices Stitch. The live-action reimagining of Disney’s 2002 animated classic opens exclusively in movie theaters on May 23 in Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, Cinemark Xd, 4Dx, and premium screens everywhere.

The Guild of Music Supervisors Awards revealed its 2025 winners Sunday night (Feb. 23). The 15th annual ceremony was held at The Wiltern in L.A.’s Koreatown and honors the year’s best work in songs and scores for screen.

Sunday’s ceremony began with a video about January’s deadly wildfires, in which guild president Lindsay Wolfington lost her home. She thanked the community for rallying behind her during opening remarks with vp Heather Guibert.

The opening remarks didn’t shy away from addressing the Academy’s decision to “move away” from best original song live performances at the 2025 Oscars. “We are proud that our awards for best song written and or recorded for film and for television, acknowledges the collaborative efforts of the songwriters, the performers, and of course the music,” Guibert told the crowd.

Twisters and The Idea of You are the most nominated films for the 2025 Guild of Music Supervisors Awards, the nominees for which were unveiled Friday.

Twisters’ Rachel Levy earned a nod for best music supervision among major budget films, while Frankie Pine with the romantic comedy The Idea of You received a nomination for best music supervision in a mid-budget film. And in the best film song competition, the Twisters action thriller got a nod for “Out of Oklahoma,” while The Idea of You will contend in the category with the title song “The Idea of You”.

Music supervisors Steve Schnur, Raphaella Lima, Codie Childs, Mike Ladman and Mara Tacham received the most individual nominations with three each, and Netflix earned the most nominations among major studios with 13 in all.

With the film opening in theaters on December 20, The Walt Disney Studios has revealed new Mufasa: The Lion King posters and a “Music of Mufasa” featurette.

Walt Disney Records will release the songs only and deluxe versions of Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King original motion picture soundtrack. The soundtrack is available to pre-add and pre-order now.

The original songs were written by Grammy, Tony and Emmy Award winner and Kennedy Center Honor recipient Lin-Manuel Miranda, and produced by Grammy Award winner Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda, with additional music and performances by Lebo M.

The winners of the 13th annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards were revealed Sunday night at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.

Anton Monsted won best music supervision for a film budgeted over $25 million for Elvis, while Lauren Marie Mikus and Bruce Gilbert won the award for a film budgeted $25 million or under for Everything Everywhere All at Once. The latter film also won best song written and/or record for a film for “This Is a Life.” Rob Lowry took home two awards for his work on Cha Cha Real Smooth and Do Revenge.

On the television side, Nora Felder won for best music supervision for a television drama for the fourth season of Stranger Things, while Kier Lehman won in the comedy/musical category for Insecure season five. “Perfect Day” from Better Call Saul season six won best song written and/or recorded for TV.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Elvis lead the nominees for the 2023 Music Supervisors Guild Awards.

Each film earned three nominations in the same categories: best music supervision for film budgeted over 25 million, best song written and/or recorded for a film and best music supervision in a trailer – film.

Mandi Collier took home two awards for her work on Sylie’s Love and Zola while the Oscar-nominated original song “Dos Oruguitas” from Encanto by Lin-Manuel Miranda won for Best Song Written and/or Recorded for a Film.

Legendary songwriter and record producer Diane Warren was presented with this year’s Icon Award and music supervisor Mitchell Leib took home the Legacy Award.

Tonight’s presenters included Hollywood luminaries such as Javier Bardem, Jessica Chastain, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo, Ryan Tedder, Marlon Wayans, Dave Burd aka Lil Dicky, Rickey Minor, Rufus Wainwright and more.

The “Encanto” song “Dos Oruguitas” and the music supervision of “Zola,” “Sylvie’s Love,” “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” and “tick, tick…Boom!” have been honored at the 12th annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Saturday evening.

The music supervisors of “Zola,” “Sylvie’s Love,” “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” and “tick, tick…Boom!” won for the best supervision of a film at four different budget levels. Songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Dos Oruguitas” from “Encanto” won in the Best Song Written and/or Recorded for a Film category, the only GMA category that corresponds to an Oscar music category.

Over the six years in which the guild has been giving out that award, the winner has gone on to take the Oscar only twice, with “City of Stars” from “La La Land” and “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born.

“Turning Red,” Pixar’s latest animated adventure, posed some pretty big musical challenges: it’s about a 13-year-old girl, obsessed with a boy band, whose Chinese ancestry literally looms large as she turns into a giant panda when her emotions spin out of control.

It demanded a trio of world-class talents: Grammy winners Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell for the songs and Oscar, Emmy and Grammy winner Ludwig Göransson to compose the score.

That such high-profile talents were available and eager to contribute to “Turning Red” says a lot about the music-friendly reputation of Pixar, which has won five music Oscars (including last year’s “Soul”) and 11 more nominations for either song or score since the original “Toy Story” in 1995.

Tom MacDougall, president of Walt Disney Music, conferred with director Domee Shi — whose personal coming-of-age, mother-daughter conflict story inspired “Turning Red” — and reached out to all of them in 2019, before production on the film began.

Films up for awards include “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” “Frozen II,” “Aladdin,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Hustlers” and “Wild Rose,” among others.

Television shows nominated include “Euphoria”; “Pose,” supervised by the dynamo trio of Amanda Krieg Thomas, Alexis Martin Woodall and Ryan Murphy; and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” an Emmy winner in the music supervision category, although the Gms lists only Robin Urdang, where the Television academy awarded showrunners Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino.

Beyonce, Regina Spektor and Mary Steenburgen are among the songwriters who have been nominated by the Guild of Music Supervisors, which announced its annual awards for film, television and videogame music and music supervision on Thursday.

Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the 15 tracks that have been shortlisted for the Best Original Song Oscar this year. And while there were a handful of head-scratching omissions (from heavyweights like Céline Dion’s “Ashes” to soul-stirring dark horses like the title track from “Hearts Beat Loud”), the songs that are still in contention represent one of the strongest fields in recent memory. The remaining tunes represent a wide variety of musical styles, running the gamut from country to hip hop, from a Disney ballad to a smirking parody of Disney ballads, and from superhero epics to “A Star Is Born.”

Here are the 15 tracks that are still in the running for Best Original Song, ranked from worst to best.

Academy Awards officials released a short list of contenders for Best Original Song on Monday. It was the first time ever that the composers branch has whittled a massive number of entries down to just 15 tunes and announced those names to the public. Top stars are among the songwriters eligible to win an Oscar, including Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton, Troye Sivan, Kendrick Lamar and more.

On Ralph Breaks the Internet, Disney’s follow-up to 2012’s Wreck It Ralph, Alan Menken enjoyed the privilege of being sought after for the legacy he’s built, and a singular musical quality only he could provide. As the eight-time Oscar winner notes, he has become a genre unto himself at this point. “It certainly beats a stick in the eye,” the legendary composer laughs. “It’s nice in that you know that your work is really valued.” The force behind such Disney animated classics as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin—alongside lyricist Howard Ashman, who passed away in 1991—Menken knows a thing or two about Disney princesses, and the songs through which they share their worlds. So, when Phil Johnston and Rich Moore set out on their sequel, with the need for a princess song that was both classical and hilariously subversive, they knew who to call.

Director and lyricist Phil Johnston will participate in TheWrap’s third annual songwriters panel on Monday night at the Dolby Screening Room Hollywood Vine.

Some of the funniest moments in “Ralph Breaks the Internet” come when Wreck-It Ralph’s pint-sized sidekick, Vanellope von Schweetz, encounters a room full of Disney princesses and discovers her own inner princess. She does so in song, “A Place Called Slaughter Race,” that is both an ode to a gritty video game in which she feels at home and a spot-on parody of the kind of longing princess songs that Alan Menken wrote for Disney animated classics like “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Tangled.”

So even though Henry Jackman wrote the score to the film, directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston turned to Menken to write the song, with lyrics by Johnston and Tom MacDougall. Johnston and Menken discussed the process in separate interviews.

Just a heads up -- in case you can't get to Walt Disney's D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA from August 14-16 -- heaps of new Lucasfilm, Pixar, Marvel and Disney movie intel will be coming out of the event, so put yourself on standby for cool previews.

Disney just shared a press release with the 2015 schedule. You'll see it's noted that "a bevy of special guests will be on hand to offer a look at an unparalleled slate that includes Alice Through the Looking Glass, The Jungle Book, Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens-and much, much more." Also, "Filmmakers will unveil never-before-seen footage from Pixar's upcoming The Good Dinosaur and Finding Dory and Disney Animation's Zootopia and Moana." Walt Disney Studios offers an exclusive look at its upcoming projects from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm at D23 Expo 2015, taking place August 14-16 at the Anaheim Convention Center. The Studio will unveil its animation and live-action film slates via two huge Hall D23 presentations featuring surprise guests and many unforgettable moments. The seemingly-endless reign of "Frozen" continued Sunday night, with the flick picking up two statuettes at the 57th Grammy Awards.

The hit Disney animated musical collected a trophy for "Let It Go," which won in the best song written for visual media category. Co-writers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez also snagged an Oscar for the track at the 2014 Academy Awards.

The "Frozen" soundtrack was also cited as the best compilation soundtrack for visual media. Lopez and Anderson-Lopez shared that award with producers Tom MacDougall and Chris Montan.

There weren't any "Frozen"-centric performances during the broadcast ceremony -- both of the movie's awards were handed out at a pre-telecast event -- but Taylor Swift wore a dress that looked a lot like Elsa's, so at least the film was represented in spirit.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 271 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures.

Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2014.

“This year’s class of invitees represents some of the most talented, creative and passionate filmmakers working in our industry today,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “Their contributions to film have entertained audiences around the world, and we are proud to welcome them to the Academy.”

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.
