The American Cinema Editors (Ace) announced the nominees for the 75th Annual Ace Eddie Awards, representing the best editing in films, television, and documentaries in 2024. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Civil War will be competing alongside awards season favorites Conclave, Dune: Part Two, and Emilia Perez in the best drama film category. Wicked and The Substance compete in the comedy film category, along with Anora, Challengers, and A Real Pain.

Wicked‘s director Jon M. Chu will be recognized with the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, an honorary award given to a filmmaker who “exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film.” Maysie Hoy and Paul Hirsch will receive Career Achievement Awards during the 2025 Ace Eddie Awards ceremony.

The American Cinema Editors’ Eddie Awards have announced their nominations in 14 categories honoring film, television, and documentaries. The winners will be announced live during the awards ceremony to be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at UCLA’s Royce Hall.

In addition to these competitive awards, “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu is set to receive the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, recognizing a filmmaker “who exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film.” Meanwhile, film editors Maysie Hoy and Paul Hirsch will receive Career Achievement Awards “for their outstanding contributions to film editing.”

“Civil War,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Emilia Pérez” and “Furiosa” have been nominated for Best Edited Feature Film (Drama) by the American Cinema Editors, which announced the nominees for the 75th annual Ace Eddie Awards on Wednesday.

The contenders for Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) are “Anora,” “Challengers,” “A Real Pain,” “The Substance” and “Wicked.” Both “Anora” and “The Substance” were edited or co-edited by their directors, Sean Baker and Coralie Fargeat.

In the drama category, the most surprising omission is “The Brutalist,” the epic drama which was passed over in favor of spring and summer action pictures “Civil War” and “Furiosa.” Also missing from the final cut was award hopefuls such as “Gladiator II,” “September 5,” “Nosferatu,” and “Nickel Boys.” Nominated editors Margaret Sixel (“Furiosa”) and Joe Walker (“Dune: Part Two”) both won Oscars for their work in the previous franchise installments (“Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Dune.”)

Ron Howard’s Jim Henson Idea Man led all comers in the documentary categories as the nominations for the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced, racking up eight altogether, three more than the next most-nominated doc.

Among its nominations are Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program for Howard, recognition for writer Mark Monroe, cinematographers Igor Martinovic and Vanja Cernjul, picture editors Sierra Neal and Paul Crowder, the film’s sound editing and sound mixing teams, as well as David Fleming’s score.

The Blue Angels happens to be a pretty cool title for a movie title. You are not at fault if you expect it to be some sort of thrilling thing. Well, “Blue Angels” is what the United States Navy flight demonstration squadron is popularly known as. In popular culture, it is, of course, the Top Gun films that have introduced us to them. Interestingly, Glen Powell, who rose to fame thanks to Top Gun: Maverick (2022), is one of the producers of the latest The Blue Angels movie. Powell also starred in another Blue Angels-inspired movie, Devotion (2023), following his Top Gun success. The Blue Angels is a documentary, though, about the real thing. Now I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but The Blue Angels turns out to be somewhat underwhelming—just saying.

Amazon Studios has landed worldwide rights to the U.S. naval aviation documentary “The Blue Angels,” which is backed by production companies of J.J. Abrams and “Top Gun: Maverick” star Glen Powell.

The film, shot with Imax cameras, chronicles a year in the cockpit with one of the world’s top aviator teams, the Navy and Marine Corps flight squadron, through their intense training and aerial touring show. The Blue Angels uses Imax cameras to follow a year in the life of the Blue Angels from training through their touring show season.
