The American Cinema Editors’ Eddie Awards have announced their nominations in 14 categories honoring film, television, and documentaries. The winners will be announced live during the awards ceremony to be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
In addition to these competitive awards, “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu is set to receive the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, recognizing a filmmaker “who exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film.” Meanwhile, film editors Maysie Hoy and Paul Hirsch will receive Career Achievement Awards “for their outstanding contributions to film editing.”
Some noteworthy Oscar contenders who made the cut at these awards include “Anora,” “Conclave,” “Wicked,” and “Emilia Pérez.” But despite having separate categories for dramas and comedies, a few major awards hopefuls were left out. “The Brutalist,” as of this writing Gold Derby’s Oscar frontrunner for Best Film Editing, was snubbed, as were “Sing Sing,...

MGM+ has unveiled Beyond: UFOs and the Unknown, a new four-episode series premiering on October 27, 2024, at 10 p.m. Et/Pt.
Following revelations in 2017 of a secret government program studying UFOs buried deep within the Pentagon, many scientists, academics, and government officials stopped wondering whether UFOs were real and started asking: “What are they?”
This journey led them far beyond machines in the sky, taking them down a rabbit hole of alien encounters, near-death experiences, remote viewing, and other seemingly unrelated paranormal phenomena. Using the most sophisticated techniques and searching for only credible evidence, they discovered frightening, perplexing, and eye-opening realities buried just beneath the surface of everyday life.
The answers they brought back promise not only to rewrite our conception of UFOs but to change everything we thought we knew about human consciousness, the afterlife, and our place in the universe.

The Blue Angels happens to be a pretty cool title for a movie title. You are not at fault if you expect it to be some sort of thrilling thing. Well, “Blue Angels” is what the United States Navy flight demonstration squadron is popularly known as. In popular culture, it is, of course, the Top Gun films that have introduced us to them. Interestingly, Glen Powell, who rose to fame thanks to Top Gun: Maverick (2022), is one of the producers of the latest The Blue Angels movie. Powell also starred in another Blue Angels-inspired movie, Devotion (2023), following his Top Gun success. The Blue Angels is a documentary, though, about the real thing. Now I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but The Blue Angels turns out to be somewhat underwhelming—just saying.

At the age of 13, Glen Powell started his brush with acting. However, he truly received his seal of mass approval with the 2022 flick Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise. Portraying Lt. Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin, the movie opened up a plethora of opportunities for him while also pushing his career to an all-time high.
These admissions come from no other than the actor himself, who recognizes the undeniable importance of the Mission Impossible star in his life at a time when he stars in the Blue Angels documentary.

Taking himself to a new height by acting as a producer for his latest venture, Powell opened up on how it all became a possibility only after his role in the acclaimed action-adventure. MGM/Imax’s The Blue Angels lands a hefty $1.3 million on just 255 domestic Imax screens from limited showtimes in the large format exhibitor’s exclusive theatrical engagement. The Paul Crowder film, with Glen Powell and Bad Robot as producers, follows the Navy’s famed demonstration flying squadron. It also “ushers in a new era for IMAX Documentaries, or Docu-busters,” the company said. It’s no. 9 at the domestic box office
It’s got a weeklong run before hitting Prime Video. The feature-length version for Imax multiplex locations will be followed later by a 45-minute, traditional Imax documentary version for Imax institutional locations.

Chronicling the eponymous Navy flight squadron across a season of demonstrations, “The Blue Angels” easily ranks near the top of the many Hollywood films to be considered “military propaganda” for their glowing depiction of the activities of U.S. men and women in uniform.
Whether or not that’s a good thing may come down to one’s feelings about the U.S. military. But in selecting for its subject an organization that performs a service that is itself public relations — and notably involves no battlefield operations — Paul Crowder’s Imax documentary feels both more honest than most in its intentions and more effective in highlighting that organization’s excellence.
Framed by the sun-up-to-sundown schedule maintained by the pilots themselves, “The Blue Angels” examines the precision, resilience and especially teamwork that goes into performing a series of dizzying, extremely dangerous aerial maneuvers. Less a celebration of the U.S. Navy’s Mavericks than its Top Guns,...

Glen Powell is a worker. He’s currently on an early 2000s Colin Ferrell/Samuel L. Jackson/Morgan Freeman run where he’s seemingly in everything. The breakout star of Top Gun: Maverick, who has two movies coming out this summer — Hit Man and Twisters — was also recently reported to join Margaret Qualley and Ed Harris in the thriller Huntington for writer/director John Patton Ford. Plus, he has stated that he and his Anyone But You co-star Sydney Sweeney are currently looking for more projects to star in after they capitalized on their on-set romance speculation.
The Hollywood Reporter is now confirming that Powell is in talks to star in the next movie from sci-fi blockbuster director J.J. Abrams. According to THR, no deal has yet to be made and there is no word on what the plot will be. However, it is also reported that this film will...

Disney+ has set a May 31, 2024 premiere date for Jim Henson Idea Man, a documentary directed by two-time Oscar winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind). “If there was going to be a definitive documentary about Jim Henson, we had hoped it would be in the hands of an accomplished filmmaker. “It was sort of anarchy on the outside, but underneath it, there was always a smart idea—a witty point to make, an observation about the world,” said Howard while discussing his impression of Jim Henson’s life with Vanity Fair. “To see that evolve through the medium of puppetry and television, and then on into movies, was so interesting to me. The Blue Angels, a feature documentary from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and Imax about the storied U.S. Navy and Marine Corps flight squadron from the cockpit, has landed at Amazon Studios.
The documentary, also from Glen Powell’s Barnstorm Productions, Zipper Bros Films and Dolphin Entertainment, has not yet set its release plans after Amazon Studios picked up the worldwide rights. But The Blue Angels will screen in Imax theaters at some point, while the doc is also expected to get play on Amazon’s Prime Video.
The Blue Angels uses Imax cameras to follow a year in the life of the Blue Angels from training through their touring show season. Imax got its start in making films for museums, science centers and other institutional partners before the Canadian-based company branched out into digitally remastering and screening Hollywood tentpoles on its large format screens after they were often shot using its proprietary cameras.
