That’s the film that convinced a young, impressionable Shane Black that Christmas could be a suitably dramatic, sometimes ironic, sometimes sincere and heartfelt, backdrop for a thriller. “In it, Christmas played a huge part. It was set against the backdrop of people shopping, Christmas carols are blaring, there’s snow,” says Black, talking exclusively to Empire. “And even the pause at the end where Redford walks outside with the hitman, and the guy says, ‘Can I give you a ride?’ This is a guy who was about to kill him, or someone else. And it really felt appropriate to me that Christmas was the backdrop for that. It struck a spark, to take a holiday and make it not just a backdrop but a character itself.”

Back in 1983 Jim Wynorski shot his first film, The Lost Empire, which has itself been "lost" for several years. Finally, on April 22nd it's getting its long-awaited home video release on DVD.

In 1983 a young director stepped behind the camera for the first time and began to shoot a film which he thought might be both his first and his last. An ardent fan of "B" cinema, Jim Wynorski decided to cram this film with everything he loved.

John Sayles, known for both writing and directing films like “Silver City”, “Sunshine State” and “Lone Star”, has been tapped to pen the small-screen HBO series adaptation, based on the best-selling autobiography “Scar Tissue” by Anthony Kiedis, frontman of the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers.
