Starring Penelope Cruz and Emile Hirsch, the Italian-made picture "Twice Born" isn't on everyone's radar just yet, perhaps because it's an internationally produced picture. But that may be about to change, as the film is debuting at the Toronto Film Festival later this week. Actor-director Sergio Castellitto ("Don't Move") directs Cruz and Hirsch in what Tiff describes as a "vivid, full-throttle melodrama about an ill-starred romance set against the backdrop of the siege of Sarajevo." Co-starring Jane Birkin and Luca De Filippo, and set against the Balkan Wars that tore apart the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, "Twice Born" centers on single mother Gemma (Cruz) who returns with her teen son to present-day Sarajevo where her son's father died during the Bosnian conflict of the 1990s. Evidently Cruz's role is a two-parter as it takes place in the present as well as in a lot of flashbacks....

The trailer is now online for Sergio Castellitto’s melodrama “Twice Born” starring Penelope Cruz, Emile Hirsch, Adnan Haskovic, Saadet Aksoy, Pietro Castellitto, Luca De Filippo, Jane Birkin, and Sergio Castellitto.
Set against the Balkan Wars that tore apart the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Twice Born stars Penelope Cruz as Gemma, a woman with a past of considerable complexity. Summoned to Sarajevo by a phone call from an old friend, she catches a plane with her teenaged son to visit an exhibition of photographs taken by an ex-lover. This return to Bosnia triggers a flood of memories as Gemma remembers the passionate times she spent with Diego (Emile Hirsch), a young and exuberant American photographer, just before the Winter Olympics in 1984. Theirs was a magical love, perfect in every respect, until her desire for a child steered their relationship in an unexpected direction. When civil war breaks out, their...

One of the Tiff premieres that doesn’t seem to be getting as much buzz as others is Twice Born, a romance-war drama that sees Penelope Cruz re-team with her Don’t Move director Sergio Castellitto, with Into the Wild and Speed Racer star Emile Hirsch coming along.
The first teaser trailer has arrived today, forgoing subtitles and just showing us some captivating imagery from the film that takes place in Sarajevo. The story is from Castellitto’s wife Margaret Mazzantini, who adapted her own novel and one can see the trailer below for the film also starring Jane Birkin, Adnan Haskovic, Pietro Castellitto, Saadet Aksoy and Luca De Filippo.
Synopsis:
Gemma leaves her comfortable apartment in Rome to visit Sarajevo with her son, Pietro. An exhibit commemorating the siege will include photographs by Pietro’s father, Diego.
Sixteen years earlier, Gemma escaped the war-torn city with Pietro while Diego remained behind and later died.

Penelope Cruz and Emilie Hirsh, after disappointing in their most recent blockbusters (On Stranger Tides and The Darkest Hour, respectively), are returning to the indie realm for their next project. Cruz is re-teaming with her Don’t Move director Sergio Castellitto for the romance-war drama Twice Born and we’ve got the first images today from Wild Bunch (via Ion Cinema).
Set in the war-torn Sarajevo, the story is from Castellitto’s wife Margaret Mazzantini, who adapted her own novel. I’ll be interested to see if the flashback mechanic is pulled off, but for now we’ve got the stills above and below, with a synopsis, for the film also starring Jane Birkin, Adnan Haskovic, Pietro Castellitto, Saadet Aksoy and Luca De Filippo.

After their collaboration nearly ten years ago on the romantic drama "Don't Move," it was revealed last year that Penelope Cruz and Italian actor-director Sergio Castellitto were set to reunite once again on a new project. As was the case with their first teaming, Cruz and Castellitto have turned to the helmer's wife, writer-actress Margaret Mazzantini, for inspiration with an adaptation her romantic war-drama "Venuto Al Mondo" that'll also feature Emile Hirsch, in a surprising piece of casting.
Little had been heard from the project since these announcements but now, thanks to Wild Bunch (via Ion Cinema), a host of images have been unveiled providing our first look at Cruz and Hirsch for the story of a woman who returns to Sarajevo with her son in tow and revisits the tumultuous past she shared with his late father. Interestingly, it looks like Hirsch will in fact play Cruz's late husband...
