‘Stargate’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: James Spader, Kurt Russell, Jaye Davidson, Viveca Lindfors, Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital, Leon Rippy, John Diehl, Carlos Lauchu, Djimon Hounsou, French Stewart | Written by Dean Devlin, Roland Emmerich | Directed by Roland Emmerich

Roland Emmerich’s Stargate remains one of the most intriguing sci-fi films of the 1990s: a bold blend of ancient alien mythology, military adventure, and speculative science fiction that spawned a long-running TV franchise. While the original 1994 theatrical release was a solid success, the later Director’s Cut – also included on this new Blu-ray from Final Cut Entertainment – adds layers of narrative depth and thematic cohesion that give the film a slightly richer texture, even if it doesn’t entirely solve the film’s tonal inconsistencies.

The story follows Egyptologist Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader), a brilliant yet discredited academic who is recruited by the U.S. military to help decipher a mysterious circular artefact discovered in Giza – the Stargate.

Netflix Sets Theatrical Release Date for Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones' 97% Rotten Tomatoes Drama

Joel Edgerton was last seen playing a variety of Jason Dessens in the first season of Dark Matter on Apple TV+, but the next project from the star just took a major step forward. Not only has Netflix debuted a new image of Edgerton in Train Dreams, which can be found below, but the streamer has also announced that the film will play in select theaters starting November 21. This is an interesting step for Netflix, a studio that usually sends most of its movies straight to streaming, but it could signify a changing of the tide in the months and years to come.

Image
This post contains spoilers from Dark Winds season 3 episode 8, “Béésh Lii” (Iron Horse).

The season finale of Dark Winds wastes no time catching up with the fraud Dr. Reynolds (John Diehl). By this time, of course, Teddi no longer trusts him. Not only is he a crooked researcher, he’s a self-made murderer. Try as she might to render herself free from the man, he overpowers her even with his aged strength. In a flash Teddi’s head is brutally bashed against the hotel room table, instantly killing her.

Gordo (A. Martinez) and Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) find the blood-riddled vehicle of Dr. Reynolds. And much to their surprise, they find Teddi Issacs dead in the trunk.

As AMC’s riveting, tense — and heartbreaking — third season of the supernaturally-tinged Southwestern crime thriller Dark Winds comes to an end this week, ’70s Navajo Tribal Police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (the Emmy-deserving Zahn McClarnon) continues to be pushed to his limits. The dedicated lawman has barely survived grave injuries while spending this entire season searching for missing Navajo teen George Bowlegs (Bodhi Okuma Linton). (The boy’s been running for his life after his best friend Ernesto Cata was murdered due to a secret they discovered at the archaeological site at which they worked .) Most painful for the long-married cop, however: His beloved longtime wife, Emma (Deanna Allison), has left him. A very spiritual traditional Navajo who can’t abide lies, Emma was shocked and disappointed when her guilt-wracked husband finally admitted to her that he had abandoned B.J. Vines (John Diehl), the tycoon responsible for their son’s demise some years earlier,...

Image
This week's episode of AMC's hit period drama Dark Winds takes a hallucinatory journey into the troubled mind of Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon). As a drugged dart sends him on a surreal journey through his past and present, the show's creators used a variety of inspirations to craft the episode's striking visuals. Variety discussed the episode's cinematic inspirations with episode director Erica Tremblay.

The episode sees Leaphorn confronted with his professional and personal crises, which have come to a head this season, and also unearths a long-buried trauma; witnessing the sexual abuse of his cousin at the hands of a priest during their time at boarding school. Those memories are conveyed in a phantasmagorical sequence whose influences were carefully chosen to reflect Leaphorn's state of mind. Says Tremblay, "I watched a lot of anime, such as Perfect Blue. The Comic Masterpiece That Currently Sits at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from wrongheaded to the correct opinion.

When “Madhouse,” a comedy about a happily married couple besieged by out of control house guests, was released in early 1990, it met with immediate hostility from critics. How hostile were they? So hostile that “Madhouse” is currently in the select group of movies sitting uncomfortably at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, not a single positive review to its name.

The irony is that not only is “Madhouse” not bad, it’s great. And not only great, but all-time great, a comedy so flawless in its construction and so precise in its timing that it ranks alongside the best work of Howard Hawks,...

10 Best Dark Winds Characters (So Far)
Image
Dark Winds takes place in the early 1970s in the Four Corners area of America, primarily on the Navajo Nation Reservation in New Mexico. The series features a mainly Indigenous American cast led by Zahn McClarnon as Joe Leaphorn, a lieutenant of the Navajo Tribal Police. Beside Joe are Bernadette "Bern" Manuelito and Jim Chee, who help Joe investigate mysterious deaths and disappearances. The AMC series has a small, tight-knit cast but nonetheless features supporting actors and guest stars who add more complexity than what Joe, Bern and Jim already have.

The first two seasons of Dark Winds feature characters from all walks of life, even those who have only ever lived in the same town. From clear antagonists to nuanced heroes, it's difficult to say that Dark Winds has a black-and-white worldview. There may be clear "good guys" and "bad guys," but this is a gray world in which Joe is battling demons.

AMC's native-led Western crime drama thriller, Dark Winds, will be premiering its third season on Sunday, March 9. The show has, since its premiere, set a very high bar for itself, and its upcoming season will look to utilize and maintain the headwind. Dark Winds is raising the stakes with its long-awaited third season as the AMC hit once again picks up the story of Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) as he tackles a new mystery alongside Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon). But old actions continue to haunt the leading man after he left businessman B.J. Vines (John Diehl) for dead in the desert at the end of Season 2. ‘Dark Winds’ Season 3 Trailer: Zahn McClarnon Haunted by Avenging Monster
Image
Navajo police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, played by Zahn McClarnon, is haunted by a bogeyman from his childhood in the third season teaser trailer for AMC’s Dark Winds, which dropped on Friday.

Leaphorn appears badgered by his demons after leaving B.J. Vines (John Diehl) in the desert to freeze to death during the second season of the noir thriller. “When I was a boy, when I went to school, we were taught that the monsters walked the Earth. When you kill a man, he’s bound to you. I’ve accepted it. And I am prepared to go on living with it, every day,” Leaphorn reveals in the third season trailer.

That’s followed by Tribal Police officer Jimmy Chee (Kiowa Gordon) appearing to try, without success, to get a severely wounded Leaphorn on the phone as his partner confronts a monster trying to stalk and kill him.

The third season,...

Netflix's Rebel Ridge and Miami Vice Share One Small Connection

Quick Links Miami Vice Is One of the Most Iconic Crime Series of All Time Rebel Ridge Is a New Netflix Action Thriller Don Johnson's Rebel Ridge Character and Miami Vice Connection

Actors returning to similar roles (even sometimes being typecast) is not particularly rare. Michael Cera has played countless bad-in-their-skin teenagers, Michelle Rodriguez has rarely strayed from being a tough cookie kind of lady, and Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, and Vin Diesel are always unstoppable tough guys.

But that's rarer when the actor returns to his role after 40 years. This was the case for Don Johnson, who returned from the legendary series Miami Vice to play a cop in the new Netflix film Rebel Ridge. And he brought a little something with him.

Don Johnson 'Has a Plan' to Revive His Influential '80s Cop Show
Image
When it comes to television in the 1980s, perhaps no other series defined the decade more than Miami Vice. Produced by Michael Mann, each episode felt like a 60-minute MTV music video, complete with pastel pinks and blues, sex appeal, and a synthesized theme that could have been composed by Depeche Mode. At the center of it all were Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, who portrayed James "Sonny" Crockett and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs respectively. Now, 34 years after its final episode aired on NBC, Johnson says he has a plan to bring back the influential crime drama, but admits that it would be a difficult undertaking.

Sitting down with Collider to discuss a variety of topics, the conversation turned to Miami Vice, and how, with all the sequels, reboots, and remakes that Hollywood seems to be so fond of, there has yet to be a new version of the series to hit the airwaves.

Exclusive: Roland Emmerich says Stargate franchise rights issues are too complicated to deal with
Image
Back in 1994, writer/director Roland Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin brought us the sci-fi adventure film Stargate, a box office hit that launched a franchise, being followed by multiple TV shows, books, comic books, video games, and direct-to-video features. The most popular of those follow-ups was the TV series Stargate Sg-1, which ran for ten seasons and then wrapped up with the aforementioned Dtv movies. It’s been a while since we got any new Stargate to watch, though – and not for lack of trying. Back in 2014, it was announced that Emmerich and Devlin would be rebooting the franchise with a new trilogy of films, starting the story over again from the beginning and tell it to its completion. Then developed the idea for a couple of years, but then it all fell apart. Last year, we learned that Stargate is one of the properties Amazon is looking to revive now that they required MGM,...

What Is The Sad Song In The Dark Winds Season 2 Finale? Its Meaning Explained
Image
The sad song playing during Leaphorn's belt buckle scene in the Dark Winds season 2 finale adds even more weight to an already-poignant moment. The track, "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" by Bob Dylan, perfectly captures Leaphorn's feelings of love and longing for his late son. Leaphorn's decision to make Vines go on his own version of "The Long Walk" mirrors the song's references to long stretches of time and emphasizes the emotional tone of Dark Winds season 2.

In the Dark Winds season 2 finale, a fittingly sad song plays while Leaphorn works on his late son's belt buckle. The melancholy tune carries a great deal of meaning for the key finale moment, lending even more weight to an already-poignant scene. Based on Tony Hillerman's Leaphorn & Chee novels, Dark Winds is a neo-noir Western that centers on the Navajo police officers of the source material: Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim...

‘Dark Winds’ Director Breaks Down Joe Leaphorn’s Moral Dilemma & Shares Season 3 Hopes
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Dark Winds, Season 2, Episode 6, “Hózhó náhásdlįį.”] Dark Winds‘ second season has come to a close but there are plenty of loose threads yet to be woven for Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and friends following the finale episode. Discovering that their two investigations overlap, Leaphorn and Chee (Kiowa Gordon) connect the dots, tying the mine explosion that killed Leaphorn’s son directly to B.J. Vines (John Diehl). Despite being arrested, B.J. is quickly released due to his wealth and standing in the community. As a result, Leaphorn shows up at the man’s home, and at gunpoint gets him into his truck where they drive out into the desert. Once there, Joe gets B.J. to step out into the cold and unforgiving landscape. Instead of shooting the man, he tells him to walk, noting its similarity to The Long Walk experienced by the Navajo. Ultimately, B.J. dies...

Dark Winds Season 2 Ending Explained: Who’s Behind the Bombings?
Image
This article contains spoilers for Dark Winds season 2.

The acclaimed AMC+ neo-noir series Dark Winds, created by Graham Roland and based on the Leaphorn & Chee novel series by Tony Hillerman, has just wrapped its second season. Going deeper, darker, and more violent than its inaugural season, Dark Winds places protagonist Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) on a more personal and grueling gauntlet that leads him to journey through his own heart of darkness. This isn’t to say that the second season is an introspective story, the season kicks off with a literal bang, but it does strike particularly closer to home for Leaphorn.

Drawing elements from Hillerman’s 1980 novel People of Darkness, the second season starts out with its two leads investigating different cases before inevitably bringing them back together. Introducing a new set of supporting characters, including a genuinely menacing antagonist in Colton Wolf (Nicholas Logan), things are deadlier...

‘Dark Winds’ Season 2 Is a Powerful Indictment of American Racism
Image
Early in the new season of Dark Winds, a wealthy woman hires Jim Chee to help recover a lockbox that was stolen from her home. A skeptical Chee says that the job sounds simple, “Except nothing ever is.”

You definitely cannot call Dark Winds Season Two simple. It features a pair of mysteries that inevitably connect in complicated ways that can at times require intense concentration to follow. Just as importantly, the series is even more ambitious in its depiction of life, death, and policing on a Navajo reservation in the early Seventies.

Dark Winds Season 2 Review
Image
There is no show like Dark Winds. Anywhere. But that’s not the only reason you should be watching AMC’s sublime and well executed cop show. This is some of the finest storytelling you will find on the small screen, with some of the most interesting characters in intriguing situations in a setting that often feels otherworldly. In season two, Dark Winds spares no time getting things rolling. There is a new villain, new dilemmas, new characters, and an unrelenting film noir thrill permeating the show’s DNA.

Based on Tony Hillerman’s best-selling novel People of Darkness, the series is set in 1971 on a remote area of the Navajo Nation with Monument Valley providing a lush, scenic backdrop. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon of Westworld and Reservation Dogs) returns, of course, this time facing a bigger problem that hits too close to home. Leaphorn runs the Tribal Police,...

Mikey (1992)

Director Dennis Dimster-Denk’s Mikey had the tagline “Remember, Jason and Freddy were kids once too”, and the movie does its best to make sure the titular creepy kid (played by Brian Bonsall) is just as deadly as any adult slasher. Mikey does some really nasty stuff in this movie and racks up an impressive body count… and Dimster-Denk certainly wasn’t afraid of pushing the envelope. The movie begins with the murder of a five-year-old and proceeds to show Mikey obsessively creeping...

‘Armageddon Time’: Read The Screenplay For James Gray’s Personal Drama About Family And The Pursuit Of The American Dream
Image
Editors note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will factor in this year’s movie awards races.

Writer-director James Gray went back to the personal for Armageddon Time, the autobiographical story that pulls from Gray’s own upbringing in a multi-generational Jewish-American family in the Flushing, Queens neighborhood of New York City.

The Focus Features film confronts issues of race and class against the backdrop of Ronald Reagan’s impending election as president in 1980. It had its world premiere in May at the Cannes Film Festival and hit theaters in late October.

Succession star and Emmy winner Jeremy Strong (a fellow New Yorker) stars in Armageddon Time as Irving Graff, essentially Gray’s real-life father. The plot centers on the Graffs taking their son Paul (Banks Repeta) from public school to a private one supported by Fred Trump, Donald Trump’s father...

James Gray And Jeremy Strong Say ‘Armageddon Time’ Is About “The Comingling Of Love And Violence” – Contenders L.A.
Image
Armageddon Time director James Gray’s got a tip for aspiring filmmakers: If you want to look good as a director, work with gifted actors, like Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong.

“I’m a big fan of great actors because what they do is tend to make you look considerably more capable than you actually are,” Gray joked during a panel for his Focus Features film at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards-season event. “You write a line and you sit at home and you have the computer and the yellow legal pad and the thing and you go, ‘Uh, is that a good line? I don’t know if it’s a good line.’ And then you go on the set and all of a sudden you say, ‘He made it work.’ ”

Yes, "Armageddon Time"'s Fred and Maryanne Trump Scene Really Happened
Image
Director James Gray based his new movie "Armageddon Time" on a true story about his youth growing up in Queens in 1980 in a Jewish family. In the new film, Paul (Banks Repeta) is a teenage boy who dreams of being an artist in a family that mostly doesn't understand him. When he gets in trouble at public school alongside his friend Johnny (Jaylin Webb), who's black, his parents (played by Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway) transfer him to an elite private school. As Paul's school tries to indoctrinate him into an upper class, capitalist mindset, his grandfather (Anthony Hopkins) tries to remind him to be a good person. All of this takes place with Ronald Reagan's election looming in the backdrop. The movie's title even comes from a Reagan quote: "We might be the generation that sees Armageddon" the then-presidential candidate said during a 1979 interview. Armageddon in the New...

Armageddon Time's True Story & Trump Connections: How Much Is Real
Image
Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Armageddon Time

Armageddon Time has an interesting backstory. Written and directed by James Gray, the film stars Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, Anthony Hopkins, and more in a star-studded line-up. The film takes its inspiration from Gray’s own life, but there are elements of the film that are only based in truth.

One of the Armageddon Time’s biggest surprises is the appearance of Fred Trump, Donald Trump’s father, and Maryanne Trump, his sister. John Diehl and Jessica Chastain’s roles, respectively, are minor, but effective. With the story following 12-year-old Paul Graff (Banks Repeta), his friend Johnny (Jaylin Webb), and the layers of systemic oppression, the film’s ending leaves audiences with a lot to think about. But how much of Armageddon Time is real, and what are the Trump connections? Here is a guide to the film’s true story and inspirations.

‘Armageddon Time’ Trailer: Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong Star in James Gray’s Semi-Autobiographical Drama
Image
James Gray is reminiscing about his childhood in Queens in the first trailer for his semi-autobiographical film “Armageddon Time.”

Inspired by the director’s upbringing in 1980s Queens, the film loosely follows Gray’s experiences as a student at the Kew-Forest School in New York City — where Donald Trump also attended. Starring newcomer Banks Repeta as Paul Graff, “Armageddon Time” also includes Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway as Paul’s parents Irving and Esther, and Anthony Hopkins as his grandfather. Additional cast members include Jaylin Webb, Ryan Sell, Tovah Feldshuh and John Diehl as Fred Trump.

In May, Hathaway and Gray broke into tears as the film received a seven-minute standing ovation following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Viewers were also surprised to see Jessica Chastain appear in a small cameo as Donald Trump’s sister, Maryanne.

Chastain told Variety in June that she agreed to play the...
