For acclaimed Indian actor R. Madhavan, making his directorial debut, “Rocketry: The Nambi Effect,” literally required an understanding of rocket science.
In addition to directing, Madhavan plays the role of Indian scientist, Nambi Narayanan, a former Indian Space Research Organization scientist and aerospace engineer known for developing efficient liquid fuel engines and who became embroiled in a spy scandal.
The director attached to the project had to drop out at the last minute due to scheduling conflicts and Madhavan who had a deep understanding of the script having written it himself after conversations with Narayanan had to take up the mantle.
“At that point of time to get somebody to understand rocket science or liquid fuel engine or what rocketry is or what a specific impulse is, or what escape velocity is and how it has to be depicted, a ready director of that caliber in the industry was next to impossible,...

Indian actor and filmmaker R Madhavan’s directorial debut Rocketry: The Nambi Effect will receive its world premiere in Cannes on May 19 as part of the celebration of India as the official country of honor at the Cannes Market this year. Check out some exclusive new photos above and below.
The film is not part of the festival’s Official Selection, but kicks off a tradition that the market will continue as it designates countries of honor during future editions. This being the 75th Cannes, Rocketry notably coincides with 75 years of Indian independence. India’s Ministry of Culture selected the film for its red carpet premiere in Cannes.
The biographical drama was shot simultaneously in multiple languages including Hindi, Tamil and English, with the English version showing in Cannes. The theatrical release is set for July 1 and will also feature Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada versions.
Madhavan plays the role of the eponymous Nambi Narayanan, a former Indian Space Research Organization scientist and aerospace engineer. Madhavan also wrote and produces the film.
The big scale production was shot in India, France, Canada, Georgia, Serbia and Russia. It features an ensemble cast including Downton Abbey’s Phyllis Logan, Vincent Riotta (House Of Gucci) and Ron Donachie (Game Of Thrones), alongside Madhavan, Simran, Rajit Kapur, Ravi Raghavendra, Misha Ghoshal, Gulshan Grover, Karthik Kumar and Dinesh Prabhakar, with special appearances from Shah Rukh Khan and Suriya.
Rocketry traces the life of Narayanan, renowned for developing the Vikas Engine — one of the most efficient, liquid fuel engines in the world that continues to be a workhorse at the Isro in almost every launch with the unique distinction of never having failed. However, the former Isro scientist and aerospace engineer was ultimately embroiled in a spy scandal. The film unveils the truth behind the mystery as it unravels in an interview by Shah Rukh Khan (in English and Hindi) and Suriya Sivakumar (in Tamil) on a TV program.
Speaking about Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’s world premiere during Cannes, Madhavan tells Deadline, “I feel very honored and privileged to be attending Cannes for the very first time and yet very nervous deep in my guts. But then, I keep reminding myself that all I ever wanted was to really tell a story, a story that possessed me and I just wanted to put it out there.”
Rocketry: The Nambi Effect is produced by TriColour Films, Varghese Moolan Pictures and 27th Investments. The film is being distributed by UFO Moviez in India, with Red Giants distributing in the south. Yash Raj Films and Phars Film Co have international rights.

This week's Game of Thrones really brought the bloodshed with a violent riot, a few assassinations and a very public beheading making up most of the episode's action.
Let's sharpen our blades and jump into the fray, shall we?
The episode kicks off with the fall of Winterfell (the Winterfall?) to Theon Grejoy - Old Monk Dude (Maester Luwin, aka The Bad Guy from Being Human, aka Donald Sumpter) manages to get a raven out the window (no, that's not a euphemism) before he's taken by the Greyjoy soldiers (again, not a euphemism).
Theon (Alfie Allen) wakes up Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) to tell his former Bff that he's home and oh by the way he's taken the city by force and now he's in charge. Bran initially receives his former manny's news with his best Btchplz face:
... but Theon convinces him that he has, indeed, stolen his house, and...

The 'Mother of Dragons' was temporarily dethroned this week -- and she wasn't the only one! It wasn't a great week to be a member of House Stark -- except for little Arya (Maisie Williams), who managed to become Tywin Lannister's (Charles Dance) most trusted servant while simultaneously avoiding exposure during a surprise visit from Petyr Baelish (Aiden Gillen) on Game of Thrones' May 6 episode. Come to think of it, how the heck does "Littlefinger" Petyr move around Westeros so quickly? I feel like he's everywhere all the time. Meanwhile, the rest of the Starks were devastated to learn that Theon (Alfie Allen) had seized control of Winterfell; and to add insult to injury, he brutally murdered Rodrick Cassel (Ron Donachie) -- in front of Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright)! It's like the universe is determined to behead every last one of little Bran's father figures until he's completely traumatized. Speaking of Starks being traumatized,...

Yes it’s a new Game of Thrones poster and … ewwww. But hey, that show has never, ever pulled punches, and it looks like we are being prepared for more of the same. HBO has also provided us with a press release, which gives a quick thumbnail sketch of where we are in the story, perfect for newbies and for those of us who maybe don’t remember exactly where everything was left at the end of Season 1.
Gruesome, no? If you’re going to attend WonderCon this weekend, Game of Thrones will be at Booth #438, where you can get a pic of your own head on a spike (by an FX artist, folks) which will then be loaded onto the official Game of Thrones Facebook page.

The Screen Actors Guild has announced their list of nominations for the best performances of 2011. I have to point out that I'm surprised Tom Hardy and Joel Edgarton weren't nominated for their roles in Warrior, because they were pretty damn awesome in that film. I think they deserved a nom more than Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm a huge fan of DiCaprio but his performance in J. Edgar wasn't his best. Brad Pitt will end up taking home the award for Moneyball though. It was great to see Bridesmaids and The Help get a nomination for best ensemble cast. It will be interesting to see who takes home the award on this list, and how many of them will make their way to the Oscars.
Who would you like to see take home the award?

Nominations for the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are in, and Emma Stone is leading the way. Her summer sleeper hit, "The Help," nabbed the most movie nominations with four, followed by Oscar-fav "The Artist" with three and a handful of others with two ("Bridesmaids," "The Descendants," "Moneyball").
On the television side of things, "Modern Family" soared to the top of the pack with five nods, while "30 Rock" and "Dexter" each garnered two. HBO reeled in the most total noms with 11.

TV Review for Game of Thrones, Season 1, episode 9 – entitled Baelor - has premiered. Baelor was the finest episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones to date. Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D. B. Weiss and director Alan Taylor did a great job. Fantastic twists and turns (I haven’t read the books yet but I am working on it).
The witch/blood spell scene between Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) was like watching a movie: Excellent camera work and sound effects. Ser Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen) was right about the armor and the Dothraki not being used to fighting against it. It was the only reason he won.
Lord Walder Frey (David Bradley)’s scene was hilarious and perverted, his hand on his fifteen-year old wife’s ass as he receives Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley), surrounded by a multitude of children of various ages,...

Game of Thrones: Season 1, Episode 3: Lord Snow’s plot synopsis: “Arriving at King’s Landing after his long journey, Ned (Sean Bean) is shocked to learn of the Crown’s profligacy from his new advisors. At Castle Black, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) impresses Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) at the expense of greener recruits. Suspicious that the Lannisters had a hand in Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright)’s fall, Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) covertly follows her husband to King’s Landing, where she is intercepted by Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen), aka “Littlefinger,” a shrewd longtime ally and brothel owner. Cersei (Lena Headey) and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) ponder the implications of Bran’s recovery; Arya (Maisie Williams) studies swordsmanship. On the road to Vaes Dothrak, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) finds herself at odds with Viserys (Harry Lloyd).”

"Game of Thrones" new clips and photos from Episode 3 are courtesy of HBO. The mysteries of the North are experienced by Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) and Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), who dismisses the Walkers and the legendary horrors of the wood North of the Wall to Snow. Lady Catelyn's (Michelle Fairley) suspicions are further cemented, as her distrust of the Lannisters now turns into fear for Ned (Sean bean), Arya (Maisie Williams) and Sansa's (Sophie Turner) well-being, as Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) survived a brutal attack, the weapon used belonging to a Lannister.
