Gore Verbinski’s The Ring led the first wave of early 2000s horror remakes that partially defined the era’s landscape alongside Saw torture-porners and other reactionary post-9/11 subgenres. Granted, remakes have always been a foundational pillar that keeps horror reinventing itself decade after decade — but the 2000s were different. Production companies like Platinum Dunes and Dark Castle Entertainment fixated on updating horror favorites from iconic slashers to Vincent Price oldies, banking on nostalgia as an added profitability measure. It’s curious though, because 2003’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and others get referenced when conversations think back to what started The Great 2000s Remake Avalanche — The Ring somewhat forgotten in these terms.
That could be because The Ring is based on Hideo Nakata’s Japanese adaptation Ringu (aka Ring), an international ghost story less popular with domestic audiences whose first introduction to Koji Suzuki’s 1991 novel was Verbinski’s Americanization.

BroadLight Capital, the investment firm founded by entertainment attorney Kevin Yorn, talent manager Rick Yorn and investment banker David Dorfman is launching a $225 million debut fund targeting growth stage consumer and tech companies.
The Yorn brothers’ entertainment advisory firms, Lbi Entertainment and Yorn Levine, represent major names in film, television, sports and music. The broad relationships across media and entertainment can “help CEOs solve endemic issues around customer acquisition and engagement,” said the firm, which was founded in 2021. Its investments so far include Zapp, a London based commerce delivery platform; MoonPay, a crypto payment infrastructure company; and Merama, a Latin American e-commerce platform.
“BroadLight is a natural extension of the client-focused businesses that my brother Rick and I have each led for the past thirty years,” said Kevin Yorn. “We have introduced hundreds of high growth businesses and their founders to our network that extends beyond the global entertainment business and reaches entrepreneurs,...

Child stars are a significant part of Hollywood. But sometimes, these young actors hit it big at an early age and then seem to vanish shortly after. One of example is David Dorfman from The Ring.
Horror movie fans will remember Dorfman as the creepy and iconic Aidan Keller in the horror movie The Ring. As the eerie boy who predicted people’s deaths, the young actor stood out in the movie franchise. However, many people do not know was a child prodigy who went to college at 13. Today, Dorfman is working for the government and leading a life far removed from Hollywood’s limelight.
David Dorfman from ‘The Ring’ was a prolific child actor
Did you know that David Dorfman, the creepy kid in The Ring and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre went to college at 13, graduated UCLA with a perfect Gpa, got a J.D. from Harvard, and now works at the U.

The sequel to The Ring has been pushed back until 2016.
Rings, the third full entry in the psychological horror franchise, was initially scheduled for November 13, but has now been delayed, according to Variety.
The movie stars Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe and Big Bang Theory actor Johnny Galecki, and is set 13 years after the events of The Ring.
David Dorfman, Aimee Teegarden, Laura Wiggins and Zach Roerig also feature.
From Paramount Pictures and directed by F Javier Gutiérrez, the movie originally went by the name The Ring 3D.
Back in 2005, a short film in the same horror series was also called Rings.
Taking place just before the events of The Ring Two, it followed a young guy (Final Destination 3's Ryan Merriman) who struggles to cope with visions of Samara and tries to pass the curse on to someone else before his seven days are up.

It turns out at least one character from the original two "The Ring" films will be appearing in the upcoming sequel/relaunch "Rings" at Paramount Pictures.
ShockTillYouDrop.com reports that Aidan Keller, played by David Dorfman in both previous films, will return in the new entry with the character now an adult.
There's no word yet if Dorfman might reprise the role. Alex Roe, Matilda Lutz and Aimee Teegarden star in the new film which is currently in production in Atlanta ahead of a release in November.

That "creepy kid" from "The Ring" is all grown up ... and has quite the impressive resume these days!As part of our ongoing 13 Days of Horror, we're checking in with some of the stars of our favorite freaky flicks and today, it's all about David Dorfman.Dorfman, who starred alongside Naomi Watts in the American remake of "The Ring" 12 years ago, chatted with toofab’s Candice Brock about working with the actress, getting typecast in bizarre roles and what he’s been up to since the movie. See what he and Samara herself (actress Daveigh Chase) look like now in the gallery above.David was only 9-years-old when the horror flick was released -- but does it feel like a lifetime ago for the former actor? "Amazingly it doesn’t, I’ve been keeping pretty busy and I guess times just sort of flown by. I guess the fact that...

Taking on a classic is a gutsy move, even for an award-winning filmmaker. And when director Kimberly Peirce signed on to re-imagine Stephen King's horror classic "Carrie," about a teenage girl with telekinetic powers hellbent on revenge, she knew she had some sky-high expectations to meet.
"I'd make a joke and say, 'I didn't give a f*ck,' but of course I felt pressure!" she told us recently while doing press for "Carrie." "But I think pressure is good."
All that pressure had Peirce thinking long and hard about what it would mean to sign on to a project of this scale, with its history and existing fan base. Having made just one film, 2008's "Stop-Loss," since her 1999 directorial debut, "Boys Don't Cry," it's clear, as a filmmaker, she doesn't make decisions lightly.
"I walked into this feeling a huge responsibility, much like I did with 'Boys Don't Cry...

Los Angeles — "Beasts of the Southern Wild" star Quvenzhane Wallis is an actress of talent, poise and maturity well beyond her years.
She was only 5 years old when she auditioned and 6 when she played the part of Hushpuppy, a little girl of fierce strength and resourcefulness living with her daddy in a squalid slab of Louisiana swampland known as The Bathtub. She was just a regular kid from nearby Houma, La. – she'd never even acted before, and actually pretended to be a year older than she was to be considered.
Now, at only 9, Quvenzhane (Kuh-vahn-zuh-nay) is the youngest-ever actress nominee at the Academy Awards. Altogether, "Beasts" has four nominations at the Feb. 24 ceremony, including best picture.
While her presence is undeniable, Quvenzhane's nomination raises the question: How young is too young to compete for an Oscar, the film industry's highest honor, which has eluded performers with decades more experience and acclaim?...

The Original Ringu (1998)
Have you heard this urban legend about a videotape that kills you seven days after you watch it? No? Then may I introduce you to the world of Hideo Nakata’s Ringu and let you two get acquainted?
Keep in mind, there are a few crucial points to the films I want to cover so you might be in for a lengthy read.
This 1998 Japanese horror film (or as it is affectionately dubbed, J-Horror) is based on the thrilling ’91 novel by Koji Suzuki and follows reporter Reiko Asakawa (Nanako Matsushimi) as she is investigating the startling urban legend and the terrifying truth behind it.
Along the way she enlists the help of her ex-husband Ryuji Takayama (Hiroyuki Sanada) and the two embark on a quest to get to the very bottom of the supposedly deadly legend, uncovering a few horrifying revelations as they go.

Chicago – I have a certain begrudging affection for Gore Verbinski’s 2002 remake of Hideo Nakata’s 1998 thriller, “Ringu,” despite the fact that I know in my heart of hearts that it doesn’t really work. Verbinski’s film falters precisely when it should be at its scariest, and yet it still has enough memorably eerie moments to inspire at least a couple sleepless nights.
It kicked off a series of increasingly inept American remakes of Asian horror films, quickly turning their once frightening motifs into self-satirizing clichés. Many Hollywood filmmakers fail to conjure the sense of brooding unease that allows surrealistic imagery to work its spell. Inexplicable puddles of water, pale-faced victims and a vengeful apparition in a white robe are all expected tropes of the genre, and they were all put to exceedingly powerful use in “Ringu.” It’s the apparition’s face hidden behind a thick mat of...

It's Halloween season again, time for my my annual spooky-related list. Last year, I gave you the best of the best (See Top 13 Scary Flicks of All Time), now, I'm choosing the Top 13 Modern Scary Films (pretty much horror movies from the last decade).
I'm a horror buff so it's hard to choose, but the films that didn't make it to my Top 13 were put in my Runners-up category.
So, here it is, The Top 13 Modern Scary Films. Did your favorite appear on my list?
Top 13 Modern Horror Films
1) .Trick .r Treat. . This criminally-underseen 2007 Halloween anthology from writer/director Michael Dougherty brought fun back to the horror genre. From serial killers to vindictive ghosts, this film features four interwoven stories that occur on Halloween. Each vignette is more frightful and fun than the first. This is a Halloween treat you.ll want to see for decades to come.

Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures premiered a new webseries on FEARnet this week called "Zombie Roadkill. The six episode series stars "Sideways"' Thomas Haden Church, "The Ring"'s David Dorfman, and a cast of undead woodland creatures (I once had a squirrel chew his way through a wall into my attic, so I can relate). Before "Roadkill" began airing online, the cast came to Austin to show it to the Alamo Drafthouse faithful at Fantastic Fest 2010. Why? "I think everyone here's really happy and drunk," says series' director David Green.

Texas-born actor Thomas Haden Church returned to Austin this past March to lend his dry wit and charm as emcee of the Austin Film Society's annual Texas Film Hall of Fame Awards. Church first served as emcee in 2009, and personally I would love to see him become a long-running host. It's probably not that unlikely -- Church resides on his cattle ranch near Bandera, Texas.
I've been a fan of Church since his eccentric role in the 1990s television sitcom Wings, and enjoyed his conflicted portrayal of villain Flint Marko aka "Sandman" in Spider-Man 3. He recently appeared in the teen comedy Easy A, but can also be seen in Zombie Roadkill, a new FEARnet web series. The trailers and PSAs for the series are hysterical and had me jumping out of my seat. Check out my favorite PSA after the jump.

It was just the other night that I was watching some lame ass attempt at humor on the television when along came a crude effort to cash in on the zombie genre by mashing it up with Bambi. Ooooo-ooooh. Zombi. Very terrifying. Why doesn't someone do zombie woodland creatures right? And lo and behold someone is! And goshdarnit its got Thomas Hayden Church in it!
Zombie Roadkill follows a group of college kids driving on an unfamiliar winding road through a national park. The group is heading for a fun weekend away, but when they accidentally run over a "harmless" squirrel, everything takes a dark turn and they quickly discover that this is no ordinary road. In fact, the woods are alive with the undead: wronged woodland creatures that have been reanimated as vengeful, murderous zombies!
