JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray has made it clear that he’s a big fan of the 1994 sci-fi action film No Escape, so when he had the chance to speak with legendary producer Gale Anne Hurd recently, he couldn’t let the opportunity to talk to her about the movie go by – and as it turns out, by mentioning No Escape, he opened the door to also discussing how director Martin Campbell got the job to direct the James Bond film GoldenEye, the 1991 made-for-hbo horror noir Cast a Deadly Spell, and the possibility of a Cast a Deadly Spell TV series!
When Bumbray told Hurd that he’s a big fan of No Escape, she confirmed that she loves the movie as well and said, “It was actually my second collaboration with (director) Martin Campbell; the first one was an HBO movie called Cast a Deadly Spell. … I’ve just worked with some amazing people.

Michael McGrath, the veteran stage actor who received a Tony Award for his performance in the musical Nice Work If You Can Get It, has died. He was 65.
McGrath died unexpectedly in his sleep Thursday at his home in Bloomfield, New Jersey, his publicist told The Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death has been determined.
A regular in Broadway and off-Broadway musicals and musical comedy productions, McGrath had starring turns in Plaza Suite, Tootsie, Memphis, Born Yesterday and Wonderful Town. He was also the first actor to play Patsy, King Arthur’s long-suffering sidekick, in Spamalot, which earned him his first Tony nomination.
“Very saddened to hear that Michael McGrath, our first and most beloved Patsy in Spamalot, has passed away,” Idle wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Warm hugs to all the Spamalot family and very happy memories of a lovely man.”
McGrath was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Sept.

The Pretty Little Liars franchise is coming to an end for now. Freeform has opted not to renew Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists for a second season.
There were high expectations for the spinoff from Freeform’s biggest hit, Pretty Little Liars, which starred PLL alums Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish reprising their roles and hailed from the same auspices as the original series, writer/executive producer I. Marlene King, Alloy Entertainment and Warner Horizon Scripted Television.
But the new series, based on the popular book series The Perfectionists written by Pll author Sara Shepard, could not come close to the blockbuster ratings success and social media popularity of Pll. Its first season averaged 260,000 Live+same viewers and a 0.12 rating in adults 18-49. Judging by the cancellation decision by Freeform, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists likely did not make up for the modest live viewing with substantial DVR and streaming bumps.

I don’t think I’ve ever loved a perfect show. I find it impossible to connect with ‘prestige’ dramas, and have always gravitated towards messy, flawed shows over The Sopranos and The Wires of the world. Pretty Little Liars is one of those shows, sometimes at its best and worst within the same scene, and a story whose constantly conflicting genres have angered fans and critics time and time again.
But it’s finished now, and I’ve seen as many lists of stupid stuff that went down as I have think-pieces about how it changed television forever without anyone really noticing. I agree with both, and I also have...

Who killed Charlotte? The answer is finally revealed in the penultimate episode of Pretty Little Liars, which also features Aria talking to the dead body in her trunk, Spencer and Caleb entering an underground tunnel via a pie restaurant and a literal gas leak to explain stray plot points. If the best and worst of seven seasons of Pretty Little Liars could be distilled down into one episode, that episode would probably look a lot like "Farewell My Lovely."
This episode is the series' bow for writer and director Joseph Dougherty, and it manages to include some great bits of dialogue that really speak to the snappy lines usually found in his episodes. Unfortunately, the episode also has a whole lot of work to do, and at times it feels like it's buckling under the strain of all that exposition.

Melding together genres seldom works. It’s a delicate balancing act; tone is key, and when either (or both) are off the whole thing can come crashing down. By 1991, HBO was already offering up original programming and decided to create a whole new sub genre – horror noir. The result was Cast a Deadly Spell, a very entertaining and perfectly concocted mixture of 1940s detective story and supernatural terror. And when the balance is right, like it is here, the results are sublime.

In that regard, they were largely disappointed — creator I. One thing it means for certain is that the Liars are going to do their best Orange is the New Black impression, which, oddly enough actually provides a more meaningful use of the term, because the Liars will be styling it up.

Don’t miss this season finale, which is clearly going to have people talking for quite a while.
I’m not saying I know the details of the secrets and/or reveals that will be coming, but it’s going to be one that will have fans reeling.

There was no order in this courtroom.
Tuesday's episode of Pretty Little Liars saw the start of Alison's (Sasha Pieterse) trial for Mona's (Janel Parrish) murder, but we didn't really learn anything new the proceedings. Instead, the state's team tried to drum up melodrama and air dirty laundry, painting Ali as a manipulative, soulless ringleader who took high school cattiness way too far.
Yeah, that's an accurate portrait – and that's exactly what Big "A" was counting on.

While most fans of Pretty Little Liars know Keegan Allen as Toby Canavaugh, who has spent much of his time on the fringe of A’s cohort, there’s a side of him they may not be familiar. And that’s his life behind the lens, as a photographer and author of his new book, life.love.beauty.

His new book -- available Feb. 3, 2015 (St. Martin’s Press) -- is actually a photo journal, which the actor has been working on since he was 10 years old. And like the title suggests, it’s an exploration of life, love, and beauty that permeates in so many different ways. “I wanted it to be an experience that everyone could kind of be a part of,” Allen tells ETonline. “Half the book is what it is right now and the other half is the interaction with everyone that's...

Hello! While Vulture’s intrepid Pretty Little Liars power-ranker Jessica Goldstein is on Parks and Rec vacation, I will be filling in as your interim Pll recapper. The grading system for best Liar belongs to her, so while she’s on that Leslie Knope beat, I will instead compose the Pretty Little Liars Aggro-List. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the show’s executive producer Joseph Dougherty revealed that the rest of the winter season will feature “the most aggressive storytelling [the show has] ever done.” Of course, we know he means that the stakes will be higher, but then again, we’ve never known these girls to be timid. Each week until Jessica’s return, I’ll be cataloguing the episode’s five most aggressive moments — from bizarre hookups to A’s latest antics. In “Fresh Meat,” Ali has been moved to Chester Women’s Correctional Facility, but the only...

We are two weeks away from the Pretty Little Liars season-five summer finale with producers already teasing a #FatalFinale. And considering that, at this time last year, fans found out about Ezra’s pretty little secret and everything changed, there’s no telling what the writers have in store for us this year.

Just 99 episodes ago, Pretty Little Liars fans were introduced to the world of Alison Dilaurentis and the four Liars she left behind when she “died.” Five seasons later, we’ve followed those Liars through journeys of love, loss, betrayal, and lots of confusion, all of which peaked when Alison came back from the dead in season four.
However, Ali’s transition back to life in Rosewood has been anything but smooth. Aria accidentally killed Shana, someone murdered Mrs. D, and we still have no idea who’s in Alison’s grave. So with a number of mysteries left to solve,...

It’s almost time to re-enter Rosewood, a place where cyberbullies reign, high schoolers come back from the dead, and more than one member of the Dilaurentis family has been dragged to a grave. And after the Pretty Little Liars season 4 finale left us with a wounded Ezra and a potentially dead Mrs. D, season 5 will pick up right where we left off: On the way to the hospital and full of questions. So what now?
First things first, EW paid a visit to the Pll set to try and get some of those questions answered before the emotional trauma of another season begins.

The "Pretty Little Liars" producers have said it over and over again, but the Season 4 finale, "A is for Answers," really is going to lay rest to a lot of the questions lingering regarding Alison Dilaurentis' disappearance -- and reappearance.
What will we learn? "Not everything," producer Oliver Goldstick tells Zap2it on the red carpet at the show's Paleyfest panel. "We've got to leave something for Season 5," he jokes, "but you'll get some very nice answers you've waited a long time for. You've waited 95 episodes to hear what happened that night and you'll get some real definitive answers."
But, as creator I. Marlene King points out, "As 'Pll' does so well, answers bring up new questions."
For starters: Once we learn the identity of the person who buried Ali -- who is not the one who hit Ali -- we're going to wonder a lot about said person's motivations.

In addition to two sneak peek clips from next week's episode, titled "Free Fall," Zap2it has a few spoilers for the end of Season 4b, "Pretty Little Liars" fans.
In the clips below, Hanna and Emily are nervous about revealing what they know (or think they know) about Mr. Fitz to Aria, and an ABC Family source tells us in "Free Fall," there's a bit of a hitch in that regard: "Hanna and Emily take a step back and say, 'Maybe it's not as black and white as Spencer says it is.'"
Ep Joseph Dougherty adds that it has to do with "Spencer's problem with her Adderall."
Here are a few more juicy tidbits about the final few Season 4 episodes, courtesy of Dougherty and costume designer Mandi Line:
"There's a fashion event that happens in [episode] 23." -- Dougherty"Lucy you'll see is very Madonna circa '87. You have Aria rock 'n' roll,...

Gangsters, gumshoes and gunshots galore? Best. Drug-induced. Hallucination. Ever.
With the evidence against Ezra (Ian Harding) piling up, and the amount of pills in Spencer’s (Troian Bellisario) tummy at an all-time high, there was only one place left for the residents of Rosewood to go from here: a black-and-white movie! Yes, the Feb. 11 episode of Pretty Little Liars shifted into a full-on tribute to film noir — and a beautiful one at that.
‘Pretty Little Liars’: 5 Game-Changing Reveals
While I wasn’t sure totally which parts were actually happening, and which parts were merely part of Spencer’s hallucination — for example, I’m pretty sure Hanna (Ashley Benson) doesn’t work for the phone company – here were the biggest moments from the episode that I think happened:
1. Ezra told Toby (Keegan Allen) that, not only is Alison (Sasha Pieterse) alive, but Spencer knows where to find her.

The "Pretty Little Liars" film noir episode may have viewers wondering what exactly was real within the the canon of the show, since the transporting back to the 1940s took place in Spencer's sleep-deprived, Adderall-fueled brain. Executive producer Joseph Dougherty clears things up for Zap2it -- sort of.
"What is real and what's not real and what counts and doesn't count -- I've been getting that a lot on Twitter," says Dougherty, with Zap2it specifically wondering about the Paige-Emily romance, since a steamy on-screen scene between them has not been shown before on "Liars." Dougherty says while it may not have been real-real, it was emotionally real.
"I think every moment that's in there is emotionally real. In my mind, Paige and Emily have been together that way, we've just not seen it before," says Dougherty. "These are two characters who I don't think we've ever seen in that kind of romantic situation,...

"Pretty Little Liars" film noir episode airs Tuesday (Feb. 11), which will transport viewers back in time to the gritty mystery movies of the 1940s. Executive producer Joseph Dougherty, who wrote and directed the episode, tells Zap2it that he never intended this to be a send-up of those films. This is the real deal.
"It was never meant to be a parody, we always wanted it to look and feel as if it was real -- and for the most part, it's very scrupulously what it would have looked like [back then]," says Dougherty. "I actually wrote that in the script, 'This is not a parody, this is the genuine article.' I wanted to make it real ... [and I said] for this to work, it's going to have to be as beautiful as possible."
That doesn't mean, however, that there aren't references to classic film noir movies, which sometimes even surprised the writer. "I'm...
