Isla Fisher is known for bringing her all to comedy roles, but the actress is now crediting her former co-star Kirsten Dunst for teaching her an invaluable trick of the trade: how to act drunk.
Fisher and Dunst co-starred together in 2012 film “Bachelorette,” which was directed by Leslye Headland and adapted from Headland’s off-Broadway show. The dark comedy had an all-star ensemble cast that included Lizzy Caplan, Rebel Wilson, James Marsden, Adam Scott, and Ann Dowd. And while Fisher had famously already played an unhinged character in “Wedding Crashers,” her “Bachelorette” role of an aging alcoholic former high school popular girl had a different level of nuance.
Fisher said during “The Drew Barrymore Show” while promoting “Dog Man” and “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” that it was Dunst who helped her embody the layers of the character. When asked by host Drew Barrymore which former co-star she learned the most from,...

The Hereditary ending is open to interpretation and leaves a lot of open-ended questions surrounding the demon Paimon. In Hereditary, Annie Graham is an artist whose mother has just passed away, and though her son Peter and husband Steve appear to be mostly indifferent towards her death, Annie's daughter Charlie seems especially troubled. This kicks off a brief exploration into Charlie's peculiar tendencies — clipping off the head of a dead bird, crafting abnormal creatures out of scraps — before a series of seemingly insignificant events leads to her untimely death.
From there, Hereditary edges suddenly into the supernatural, introducing séances, ghosts, and the occult. However, whether the specters that appear to be haunting their home are real or just heightened projections of grief, there is very clearly something malevolent inhabiting this despair-stricken Graham family. Whether the "Hail, Paimon" conclusion of Hereditary feels especially satisfying depends on whichever interpretation of horror the audience feels inclined to follow.

Netflix’s Terminator Zero anime is arguably the best Terminator project since the James Cameron movies, and there are plenty of things Terminator 7 can learn from it. While James Cameron has confirmed that he is working on a secret Terminator project, the status of Terminator 7 is unclear. However, assuming that a new Terminator film does happen eventually, it will have big shoes to fill after how well-received Terminator Zero was. With an 86% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, Terminator Zero is the franchise’s highest-rated movie or show since Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Terminator Zero takes place mostly two years after the events of Terminator 2, although it also includes scenes set in the near future. The anime series can be considered one of the many Terminator timelines and is not too worried about how it intersects with the movies. Instead, Terminator Zero tells a somewhat self-contained story that perfectly fits into that world.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the TV show The Handmaid's Tale.Emily, the quietly defiant Handmaid brought to life by Alexis Bledel in The Handmaid's Tale TV series, is a character who resonates deeply with audiences. Unlike her book counterpart, the nameless Ofglen, the show granted her a distinct identity, making her a pivotal figure in the resistance. Her journey, marked by both resilience and heartbreak, culminated in a seemingly triumphant escape to Canada.
However, Emily's sudden disappearance in season 5 left a gaping hole in the narrative. While the show hints at her return to Gilead to continue the fight, this sudden departure feels unsatisfying for a character who has endured so much. The series is one of the biggest TV shows returning to screens in 2025 and expectations are high. Now The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 holds the potential to rectify this by providing Emily with a more fulfilling conclusion,...

Compliance (2012) directed by Craig Zobel, features an ensemble cast led by Dreama Walker as Becky, Ann Dowd as Sandra, Pat Healy as Daniels, Philip Ettinger as Kevin, Ashlie Atkinson as Marti, and Stephen Payne as Harold. Compliance starts like any other thriller, slow and measured but when it picks up, it transforms into something entirely unexpected. The concept of prank calling in cinema isn’t new, but this film handles it in a way that becomes the true highlight of the story. Everything whether it’s the cast, the theme, or the storyline is restrained and purposeful, delivering a film that spans just 90 minutes. The film follows the story of Becky, an innocent and naive employee who becomes victim of a prank call.
The movie opens with the employees, led by Sandra, gathering for a morning meeting before the store opens. It’s going to be a busy day because it’s the weekend,...

In 2019, it was announced that Margaret Atwood's novel, The Testaments, would get its own television adaptation, yet this dystopian endeavor will struggle with the same problem that its predecessor did. Published 34 years after The Handmaid's Tale, The Testaments is a sequel to the iconic Atwood novel, and centers on three women: Aunt Lydia of the original Handmaid's Tale book, a woman living in Gilead, and a woman living in Canada. While the TV adaptation of the sequel is definitely exciting considering the success of Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, the series already faces a significant issue.
At this point, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale has successfully run for five seasons, and a sixth is set to premiere in 2025. With Elisabeth Moss in the leading role, the series has earned praise for its disturbing portrayal of Atwood's misogynistic Gilead. The show has a cumulative 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and has won various accolades.

Since 2012, when she broke onto Broadway with “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” Carrie Coon has shared the stage (theatrical and sound) with a formidable number of acting icons. In “The Post,” she stood opposite Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep (while being directed by some nerd named Steven Spielberg). Then there’s “Widows” with Viola Davis, “The Nest” next to Jude Law, two “Ghostbusters” movies alongside Bill Murray, and, this critic would argue, “The Leftovers,” across from the incomparable Ann Dowd. Soon, she’ll be traveling back to “The Gilded Age” where she’ll thrust and parry with none other than Christine Baranski and Audra McDonald.
There are plenty more Oscar, Emmy, and Tony winners to add to the list — and more to come in the years ahead — but for all the praise Coon heaps on her cherished co-stars, she said there were only two times when she was “scared to...

Last season of The Handmaid’s Tale started and ended with a look from star Elisabeth Moss.
The fifth season of Hulu’s hit dystopian series began with the smirk seen ’round the globe that pit June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) against Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski), and the season came surprisingly full circle when it ended with the same telling expression between the pair as they unexpectedly found themselves alone, yet together, on the same train of Gilead refugees hoping to make it to Vancouver and, eventually, Hawaii.
At the time of that November 2022 finale, Moss, also an executive producer and director on the Emmy-winning tale, told The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s actually a pretty positive ending for the show and the season, which we don’t usually do. It’s a cliffhanger, … but there’s something positive about it. Of course, of all the people that would be on the...

Women’s reproductive health is rarely depicted in movies, according to a new report from the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative.
A new research brief from Dr. Stacy L. Smith, who founded the Institute, looked at the 100 most popular movies of 2023 for portrayals related to pregnancy, miscarriage, infertility, contraception, abortion, menstruation, and overall reproductive health.
“For years we have provided data on how Hollywood marginalizes girls and women on screen,” said Dr. Smith in a statement shared with TheWrap. “This latest report offers further evidence that it is not only the presence of women themselves that is missing on screen, but of critical depictions related to their health and well-being.”
The results show that only 42% of films contained any depiction of reproductive health in 2023. There were 8 depictions of menstruation, most of them in
Kelly Fremon Craig’s “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret,” which was based on the classic book by Judy Blume.

With fans loving Terminator Zero, a bold new anime project coming to Netflix on August 29, 2024, veteran anime character designer and director Masashi Kud is uniting Japanese and American aesthetics for an exciting new series. Anime fans particularly recognize Kud for his longtime contributions to adored franchises like Bleach, Tower of God, and Hayate the Combat Butler. Still, as a director, he takes on additional responsibilities in adapting an American icon. With Terminator Zero having debuted at the end of August 2024 and Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War having debuted in the Fall, things aren't slowing down for Masashi Kud.
With projects dating back to 1996 with artwork for Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Masashi Kud's work has evolved as a crew member and eventual production leader for Terminator Zero. However, as a director for this beloved anime produced by Production I.G., Kud feels a strong responsibility for handling such beloved intellectual property as a professional and a fan.

Naomi Watts and a very big dog are heading to cinemas.
“The Friend,” a touching drama about a writer and editor whose literary mentor commits suicide and leaves her with his Great Dane to care for, has been acquired by Bleecker Street. The indie studio has nabbed North American distribution rights for an undisclosed sum — the sale took some time, which is something of a surprise given that “The Friend” received strong reviews when it showed at fall film festivals like Telluride and Toronto. It’s another reminder that studios are being more cautious when it comes to buying projects post-covid. The indie and arthouse theatrical market is still struggling to fully rebound from pandemic disruptions.
“The Friend” was written and directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the team behind “The Deep End” and “What Maisie Knew,” and co-stars Bill Murray, Sarah Pidgeon, Carla Gugino, Constance Wu, Noma Dumezweni and Ann Dowd.

The Friend, a grief drama from writer/directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel about a writer mourning her late pal while dealing with the Great Dane dog he left behind, and starring Naomi Watts and Bill Murray, has been picked up by Bleecker Street.
Having taken the North American rights to the pic, Bleecker plans an early 2025 theatrical release for the adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s novel. Watts plays Iris, a writer and teacher grieving over the sudden loss of her best friend, Walter (Bill Murray), only to learn he has left her Apollo, a giant dog who almost comes up to her waist.
As Iris unexpectedly bonds with the dog, she begins to come to terms with her past, her lost friend and her own creative inner life. The ensemble cast for the film about life, death and friendship includes Sarah Pidgeon, Carla Gugino, Constance Wu, Noma Dumezweni and Ann Dowd.

Universal Pictures and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a trilogy of sequels to the 1973 classic The Exorcist, which were going to be another collaboration between Blumhouse Productions and director David Gordon Green (who previously delivered a trilogy of Halloween sequels for Blumhouse and Universal). By the time Green’s first Exorcist movie, The Exorcist: Believer, reached theatres last October, the script for a sequel titled The Exorcist: Deceiver, which was scheduled for an April 18, 2025 theatrical release, was ready and the story of the third film was mapped out… Believer‘s box office numbers were okay, the movie pulled in $137 million on a $30 million budget, but Universal was hoping for a lot better than “okay,” and the reactions were largely negative. (You can read our 4/10 review Here.) So the plans for The Exorcist: Deceiver were set aside and Green left the project.

Although many consider it a masterpiece, James Cameron has enough distance from The Terminator to give it his honest review.
Marking the 40th anniversary of his directorial debut, the 3x Oscar-winning director looked back on parts of the 1984 film as “pretty cringeworthy” as he admitted the “production value” didn’t age well.
“I don’t think of it as some Holy Grail, that’s for sure,” he told Empire. “I look at it now and there are parts of it that are pretty cringeworthy, and parts of it that are like, ‘Yeah, we did pretty well for the resources we had available.'”
“Cameron added, “”Just the production value, you know? I don’t cringe on any of the dialogue, but I have a lower cringe factor than, apparently, a lot of people do around the dialogue that I write,” added Cameron. “You know what? Let me see your three-out-of-the-four-highest-grossing...

Filming on the sixth and final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” has, at long last, begun, Hulu announced on Friday. The network shared a photo of star Elisabeth Moss, who’s also directing and holding a clapboard, with the note that the Emmy-winning series will return in spring of 2025.
It’s been nearly two years since the Season 5 finale and a year-and-a-half since executive producers Erich Tuchman and Yahlin Chang were named co-showrunners for Season 6.
Longtime showrunner and series creator Bruce Miller stepped away from the drama after five seasons to focus on the development of its upcoming sequel series “The Testaments,” which like “Handmaid’s Tale” is based on the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood. It’s set 15 years after the events of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Miller is still involved with the final season as an executive producer and writer.

The final season of The Handmaid’s Tale is finally underway.
Hulu on Friday shared an image of series lead Elisabeth Moss holding a slate from the opening day of filming on the show’s sixth and last season. The slate shows that cameras began rolling on Sept. 3 — and that Moss is directing the first episode (she previously helmed six episodes across seasons four and five).
The Disney-owned streamer also said that season six will premiere in spring 2025, which will mean about a 2 1/2-year gap between the season five finale, which debuted Nov. 9, 2022, and the final season opener. Production on The Handmaid’s Tale had been scheduled to resume in fall 2023 but was pushed back as striking writers and actors negotiated for, and eventually won, better contracts with media companies. Lining up schedules for the show’s cast further moved the start date to this week.

The Handmaid’s Tale is officially back in production on its sixth and final season.
Hulu revealed Friday that cameras began rolling on the series’ conclusion on September 3, sharing a photo of series star Elisabeth Moss holding the slate for the first scene of Episode 1, which she will also be directing.
Along with the production announcement, Hulu also said that Season 6 will debut in spring 2025.
The final chapter of the Emmy-winning Hulu series originally was to begin production in 2023 for a fall 2024 premiere, but that schedule, of course, was delayed by the strikes.
Season 5 follows June (Elisabeth Moss) in the aftermath of Commander Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) murder and the consequences she must face for her role in the gruesome slaying. At a minimum, she will have to face off with his widow Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), and on some level Gilead. But mainly, she will be forced to redefine her identity and purpose,...
