Music Supervisor Gabe Hilfer Lands Three Nominations In The Same Category
Image
Has anyone ever been nominated three times in the same Emmy category? Well, music supervisor Gabe Hilfer has now.

Hilfer scored three nominations in the Outstanding Music Supervision for his work on The Righteous Gemstones, The Studio and The White Lotus.

He will be up against Hacks’ Matt Biffa and The Last Of Us’ Evyen Klean, Ian Broucek and Scott Hanau and Severance’s George Drakoulias.

Hilfer, who co-founded Full Pursuit in 2011 alongside Season Kent, won the Emmy in this category for his work on The White Lotus in 2023 and was nominated in 2022 for his work on Ozark but he has now more than doubled his tally of Emmy noms.

For The Righteous Gemstones, he is nominated alongside DeVoe Yates, who has worked as the music supervisor on shows such as Tires and Happy Face as well as M3gan 2.0.

Emmys’ Music Nominations: Father-Daughter Duo Thomas and Julia Newman Make History; Hans Zimmer Could Finally Score a Win
Image
A father-daughter composing team was nominated, Hans Zimmer could win his first Emmy, and a music supervisor was nominated for three different shows — just some of the surprises among nominations for the 2024-2025 Emmys unveiled Tuesday morning by the Television Academy.

Thomas Newman and his daughter Julia Newman were nominated for their music for Netflix’s miniseries “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” a first in Emmy history for a two-generation, same-family collaboration on a single television score. And in another musical-family story, Oscar and Emmy winner Michael Giacchino’s son Mick Giacchino was nominated for his original music for HBO’s “The Penguin.”

Zimmer, who has two Oscars and four Grammys, has never won an Emmy but could this year with his nomination in the documentary music category for NBC’s “The Americas” (shared with fellow composers Anze Rozman and Kara Talve).

Music supervisor Gabe Hilfer dominated the...

‘Wicked,’ ‘A Complete Unknown’ Among 2025 Guild of Music Supervisors Awards Winners
Image
The Guild of Music Supervisors Awards revealed its 2025 winners Sunday night (Feb. 23). The 15th annual ceremony was held at The Wiltern in L.A.’s Koreatown and honors the year’s best work in songs and scores for screen.

Sunday’s ceremony began with a video about January’s deadly wildfires, in which guild president Lindsay Wolfington lost her home. She thanked the community for rallying behind her during opening remarks with vp Heather Guibert.

The opening remarks didn’t shy away from addressing the Academy’s decision to “move away” from best original song live performances at the 2025 Oscars. “We are proud that our awards for best song written and or recorded for film and for television, acknowledges the collaborative efforts of the songwriters, the performers, and of course the music,” Guibert told the crowd.

“This year in particular, unlike other awards bodies, we are especially proud to be...

Joker: Folie à Deux sets 4K Blu-ray date; full special features are now listed
Image
While this year has had its fair share of surprising flops, Joker: Folie à Deux is probably one of the more surprising ones. It had the hype of Lady Gaga taking on the role of Harley Quinn and the musical twist potentially lent itself to exploring interesting territory as an R-rated sequel to a notorious comic book villain. The movie’s response would become incredibly underwhelming, and Blu-ray.com has announced that Warner Bros. is already set to release the film’s 4K Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray release on December 17. The digital release is going to be even sooner, with a recent Variety report on the film’s box office woes revealing WB is dumping it on digital early – October 29 – in the hopes of recouping some of its $200 million investment.

Joker: Folie à Deux stars Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, and Harry Lawtey. The description reads, “Joker: Folie À Deux...

Joker: Folie À Deux Trailer Sees The Clown Prince Of Crime And Harley Quinn Make Their Mark On Gotham
Image
Warner Bros. has released the first full-length trailer for Joker: Folie À Deux and it appears Gotham City is all too willing to embrace Arthur Fleck after his chaotic actions in 2019's Joker.

Of course, it's hard to say how much of what we see here is real or simply in the Clown Prince of Crime's head; for example, he's shown dressed in full Joker garb in a courtroom and later hosting the Joker & Harley Show alongside Harley Quinn.

Many fans have wondered how this movie will continue the classic Batman villain's story and while there's still no sign of the Dark Knight, all signs point to this being another fascinating character study.

As for those musical elements, while they're certainly hinted at, Warner Bros. is being careful not to make them too obvious. Hollywood has shied away from marking musicals as, well, musicals in recent years so this isn't overly surprising.

Dua Lipa & Mark Ronson On How Barbie’s “Existential Crisis” Made Her “Dance The Night” Away: The Story Behind The Song – Crew Call Podcast
Image
Did disco ever go out of style? Not if you ask Mark Ronson and Dua Lipa, the forces behind the soundtrack for this year’s No. 1 box office hit, Barbie. Specifically, they co-penned the album’s lead single “Dance the Night,” which is performed by the English-Albanian singer.

In an era where No. 1 movies don’t always have top-ranking soundtracks, the hip swaying, hummable, string-fueled ditty took on a life of its own, becoming an anthem for summer and notching Grammy noms for Song of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media. Stateside, “Dance the Night” peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Lipa’s fifth top-ten single.

However, as easy and free-breezy as “Dance the Night” might sound, Ronson, who won an Oscar for the original song “Shallow” from A Star Is Born, says the single was “the longest I’ve ever worked on any song.

‘Barbie’ Album Producers on “I’m Just Ken” Success and How Greta Gerwig Landed Nicki Minaj
Image
Two months after “I’m Just Ken” debuted on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, writer and producer Mark Ronson broke down the making of the Ryan Gosling breakout song at a “The Music Behind Barbie” event in Los Angeles.

Joined by Barbie soundtrack producers Kevin Weaver and Brandon Davis, along with music supervisor George Drakoulias, at the Grammy Museum on Wednesday, Ronson revealed that Greta Gerwig initially came to him with the idea for two main songs.

“She sent me this funny Pdf that her and Noah [Baumbach] had scribbled, like Barbie’s song should be about the world is perfect and everything’s great and there are no shadows and everything’s great because everything’s always great and that will be great. Like just all these silly lyrics,” the producer said. “The Ken song was like, ‘I love horses but they also make me mad.’ And it said Barbie and Ken hit songs,...

New ‘Barbie’ trailer: Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling make their own kind of music [Watch]
Image
Arguably the best look yet at “Barbie” was released Thursday by Warner Bros. The new trailer for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film mixes goofy comedy with some existential conflict while also showcasing the star turns from leads Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

The “Barbie” main trailer opens with the title hero (Robbie) having yet another “best day ever” and a blowout party that gets interrupted when Barbie asks her friends if they ever think about dying. The cracks in her happy facade continue from there before Barbie and Ken (Gosling) are forced to go to the “real world” to find out the “truth about the universe.” Once in reality, Barbie and Ken are faced with confrontation and disinterest as they seemingly must work to escape the clutches of a corporate overlord (played by Will Ferrell). Barbie The Movie Gets a Fun New Trailer
Image
Barbie The Movie might be hitting theaters this summer, but today we have this first look at the new posters and second trailer for the film that’s sure to be a splash!

To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.

From Oscar-nominated writer/director Greta Gerwig comes “Barbie,” starring Oscar-nominees Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, alongside America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell. The film also stars Ana Cruz Kayne (“Little Women”), Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp (the “X-Men” films), Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”), Ncuti Gatwa (“Sex Education”), Scott Evans (“Grace and Frankie”), Jamie Demetriou (“Cruella”), Connor Swindells, Sharon Rooney, Nicola Coughlan, Ritu Arya (“The Umbrella Academy”), Grammy Award-winning...

Escape the real world and head to Barbie Land, but don’t forget your roller blades! The new minute-and-a-half teaser trailer for Barbie gives us more of everything – more Barbies, more Kens, more Margot Robbie, and more Ryan Gosling.

Warner Bros Pictures’ trailer release was accompanied by a batch of character posters.

The cast is led by Oscar nominees Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken. America Ferrera (Superstore), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Ariana Greenblatt (Avengers: Infinity War), Issa Rae (Insecure), Rhea Perlman (I’ll See You in My Dreams), and Will Ferrell (the Anchorman films) also star.

In Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ trailer, no one’s gonna beach anyone off [Watch]
Image
Warner Bros. had some fun on Tuesday with the release of a new trailer for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” The latest teaser eschews the “2001” spoof of December’s marketing material and instead opts for a more straightforward look at the July release co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

Set to the Beach Boys’ track “Fun, Fun, Fun,” the new “Barbie” trailer establishes Barbie Land, where everyone is either a Barbie or a Ken. Margot Robbie stars as the title Barbie, with Ryan Gosling as her main Ken. But other Kens include Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, and Kingsley Ben-Adir. There are more Barbies too, played by Issa Rae, Nicola Coughlan, Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa, Alexandra Shipp, and many others. Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, and Helen Mirren are in this as well. The tone of the trailer is daffy and whimsical and shows off the comedic chemistry between Gosling and Robbie.

From ‘Barbarian’ to ‘Euphoria’: The Best Needle Drops of 2022
Image
There is nothing better than a cinematic needle drop. This year was absolutely loaded perfect song selections that charmed, horrified, confused or absolutely destroyed audiences. To celebrate the best moments of music in 2022’s film and television the Variety staff cobbled together a list of our favorite hits.

Labrinth & Zendaya “I’m Tired” – “Euphoria”

Music Supervisor: Jen Malone

This song is hauntingly perfect for the scene in which it is featured. Rue (Zendaya) is out of her mind on drugs and hallucinates that she is in a church before she sees herself in her living room dancing with her dead father. Zendaya proves that she is not only one of the best actresses of her time in this scene, but one hell of a singer to boot. – Joe Otterson

Donovan “Riki Tiki Tavi” – “Barbarian”

Music Supervisor: Jillian Ennis

During the tensest scene of this year’s horror hit “Barbarian,” Tess...

Blaze Bayley on Fronting Iron Maiden: ‘It Was Like Playing Soccer for England in the World Cup’
Image
Rolling Stone‘s interview series King for a Day features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and singers who had the difficult job of fronting major rock bands after the departure of an iconic vocalist. Some of them stayed in their bands for years, while others lasted just a few months. In the end, however, they all found out that replacement singers can themselves be replaced. This edition features former Iron Maiden singer Blaze Bayley.

It would be easy to forgive Blaze Bayley for being at least slightly bitter...

Woody Guthrie Returns, Thanks to Modern Indie and Americana Acts
Image
Drought, unemployment, unstable weather, ruined crops, decimated farmers: In retrospect, the devastating Dust Bowl of the Thirties sounds like a precursor to America in the Covid-19 era. Aptly, the album that chronicled those hard years in the Southern Plains in real-time is making a comeback of its own.

Just in time for another national crisis comes Home in This World: Woody Guthrie’s Dustbowl Ballads, a track-by-track remake of Guthrie’s album Dust Bowl Ballads. Likely one of the first concept albums in music history, Guthrie’s 1940 album was inspired...

The Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson Talks ‘Shake Your Money Maker’ Deluxe Edition
Image
The Black Crowes will mark the 30th anniversary of their 1990 debut album Shake Your Money Maker with a deluxe reissue. Set for a February 26th release, the package arrives in multiple formats, including a “super deluxe” edition with unreleased songs, demos, and a raucous concert recording from the band’s early days that finds singer Chris Robinson breaking up a crowd fight mid-song.

In 2019, Chris and his guitar-playing brother Rich Robinson patched up their own notoriously volatile relationship to reform the Black Crowes with new members for a 2020 summer tour.

Long after he released it, Petty never could stop thinking about Wildflowers; in fact, it was on his mind right before he died.

Mike Campbell on New Dirty Knobs Album, Possible ‘Wildflowers’ Tribute Tour
Image
When Mike Campbell formed the Dirty Knobs with a loose collective of session pros back in 2001, he had no intention of making it his full-time gig. It was merely a chance to play some under-the-radar club shows when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were off the road. They rarely played to more than 200 people and never strayed far from the confines of Los Angeles.

“It was a good workshop for me to try out new songs in front of a crowd and see which ones stuck and which ones they didn’t like,...

Glenn Danzig Explains How He Ended Up Writing Songs for 1987's Less Than Zero [Exclusive]
Image
Glenn Danzig is best known as the singer and bandleader for the seminal horror punks The Misfits, his eponymously monikered hard rock band, Danzig, and his hit song "Mother." But a deeper look into his discography reveals a connection to Hollywood, one that pre-dates the '90s rumor that he was offered the role of Wolverine in X-Men; his music's inclusion in an episode of The X-Files and The Hangover movies; and his eventual debut as a writer/director with last year's gory anthology, Verotika. Released in 1987, the song "You and Me (Less Than Zero)" on the Less Than Zero soundtrack is credited to "Glenn Danzig and the Power and Fury Orchestra." And alongside tracks by LL Cool J, The Bangles, and Slayer, lurked another Danzig contribution, as well: "Life Fades Away," co-written with late '50s icon Roy Orbison, who performed vocals and guitar.

In this recently unearthed interview,...

Rock & Roll’s Anxiety of Influence
It’s unlikely that Greta Van Fleet singer Josh Kiszka woke up this morning troubled by all the accusations that he’s copy-and-pasted Robert Plant’s vocal style. Or that his bandmates are too fazed by Pitchfork pegging them as Led Zeppelin–aping hacks in a scathing review of their new debut, Anthem of the Peaceful Army. The album debuted in the Top Five, and many of the shows on a world tour supporting the LP have already sold out. Besides, accusations of shameless musical pilfering have long been a rock & roll rite of passage.

Wish I Was Here (2014)
'Guardians,' 'Gone Girl,' 'Interstellar' scores get a jump on awards season
Wish I Was Here (2014)
Somehow over the years the Hollywood Music in Media Awards have escaped me. The event's fifth annual slate of nominees were announced today, and it's a pretty standard assortment of names we've been considering at the forefront of this year's Best Original Score Oscar race, from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to Hans Zimmer to the ubiquitous Alexandre Desplat. The nominees were chosen by an "Hmma advisory board and selection committee," and winners will be voted upon by "music-media industry professionals comprised of select members of the Society of Composers and Lyricists, The Television Academy, the AMPAS Music Branch, Naras, performing rights organizations, film music journalists and music executives," according to the press release. You might raise your eyebrow at something like "Interstellar" being on here when it hasn't been screened for these purposes (or much at all, for that matter). The nominations are also based on hearing music via...

Top 200 Most Anticipated Films for 2014: #188. Peter Bogdanovich’s Squirrel to the Nuts
Squirrel to the Nuts

Director: Peter Bogdanovich

Writer(s): Peter Bogdanovich, Louise Stratton

Producers: Noah Baumbach, Wes Anderson, George Drakoulias, Logan Levy, Holly Wiersma

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available

Cast: Jennifer Aniston, Kathryn Hahn, Lucy Punch, Owen Wilson, Will Forte, Joanna Lumley, Imogen Poots

The past decade has seen director Peter Bogdanovich mostly in front of the camera rather than behind it, his last directorial effort being 2001′s The Cat’s Meow. Needless to say, we’re always excited to see anything with his name on it, especially considering the screenplay was co-written by his ex-wife Louise Stratton (which is its own special story). A fantastic cast and a plot that sounds vaguely like a spin off of Bullets Over Broadway, this promises to be one of 2014′s comedic highlights.

Gist: A married Broadway director falls for a prostitute-turned-actress and works to help her advance her career.

Beastie Boys' 'Make Some Noise': A Vma Cheat Sheet
Video of the Year nominee is packed with characters from the Beasties' past.

By James Montgomery

Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride in the Beastie Boy's "Make Some Noise" video

Photo: Capitol

If they've been anything over the course of their near-30-year career, the Beastie Boys have always been thorough, the kind of band that derives some sort of perverse pleasure from peppering their music with a sundry of pop-culture references, inside jokes and exhaustively sought, expertly placed samples.

And because of that, they've managed to create their own rather insular world, the kind of place where Mantan Moreland hangs out with Ted Danson, where Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks" rubs elbows with Les Baxter's "Prelude in C# Minor." And luckily for all of us, each time they release an album, they pull the curtain back slightly, and invite us in for a drink. So it's...

Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Ed Helms in The Hangover (2009)
‘The Hangover: Part II’ – What Did You Think?
Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Ed Helms in The Hangover (2009)
Todd Phillips' The Hangover really came out of nowhere, featuring no big-name stars and a plot that seemed recycled from Dude Where's My Car? Nonetheless, something about this hapless band of roofie'd child men resonated with audiences, allowing "The Wolf Pack" to scare up over $450 million in worldwide grosses [1]. The Hangover: Part II, which hits theaters today, is Warner Bros. attempt to re-capture the magic of the first film. They have a lot riding on this film [2], spending much more on the budget and on stars' salaries, and bringing the action from Vegas all the way to Bangkok. We don't typically discuss comedies on the /Filmcast, primarily because comedies are so subjective. How can one judge what is "funny"? Different people invariably find different things more amusing than others; the sight of a monkey simulating oral sex on a monk may be uproarious to some while tiring to others.
