My relationship to SpongeBob, Sandy Cheeks and the other denizens of Bikini Bottom is a long one filled with fond memories. I remember watching the series’ pilot episode the very first time it aired on Nickelodeon, and seeing The SpongeBob SquarepPants Movie in theaters its first week of release. A land dwelling, oxygen breathing squirrel isn’t exactly a character you’d expect to find in a series set at the bottom of the ocean, but Sandy has been a prominent element of the franchise since the early days of its first season. It only seems fair that after more than two decades she’s given the reigns to her very own feature-length film, but perhaps we’ve waited too long. This one should have stayed at the bottom of the ocean.

SpongeBob needs no introduction, which has captivated audiences since debuting on Nickelodeon in 1999. On top of 14 seasons over the span of the past two decades, the character has also witnessed three theatrical releases, with the last one being 2020’s Sponge on the Run. And on the character’s 25th anniversary, a fourth film has been announced, set to be led by director Derek Drymon, who served as the creative director for the first three seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants.

However, some are conflicted about the upcoming theatrical release, after director Drymon revealed that the upcoming film will feature n-dity.

During the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon on Thursday, Paramount chief Brian Robbins announced that an all-star cast has been set for the film including Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, Jp Karliak, Dan Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña with Kurt Russell and John Goodman. Or, as Robbins put it, “Pretty much the rest of the Screen Actors Guild.” He also praised Rihanna as “the most legendary Smurfette ever.”

Paramount and Skydance have moved the release date of the eighth Mission: Impossible movie, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, from June 28, 2024, to May 23, 2025.

Production of the film stopped earlier this year so that the franchise’s star, Tom Cruise, as well as the rest of the seventh film’s cast, could promote McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which was released on July 12, 2023.

Then the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike began on July 14, and the cast of the upcoming film was unable to continue production.

Its predecessor grossed $172.1 million domestically and $567.5 million worldwide.

Since this was against a budget of $291 million, the film ended up underperforming at the box office despite being praised by both critics and audiences. The budget for the next film has not been announced yet.

Paramount is getting animated. The studio made a big show of its animated slate of movies for the rest of the year and moving into 2024 and 2025, with the studio announcing some colorful voice casting and announcing some new films that will be hitting theaters.

In addition to showing footage for its 2023 films “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” Paramount Animation president Ramsey Naito announced a fourth “SpongeBob Squarepants” movie, shared an update on its planned trilogy of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” movies, and the voice casting for a new “Transformers” animated film and the first movie in its partnership to bring “The Smurfs” back to the big screen.

Rihanna will voice Smurfette in Paramount and Nickelodeon’s Untitled Smurfs Animated Film. She’ll also write and perform original music for the film while serving as a producer on the movie, which is slated for a Feb. 14, 2025 release.

Appearing on stage at CinemaCon, Rihanna said she’s thrilled to be playing this “blue badass” in the reimagined Smurfs movie. “I get to show up in my PJs in my third trimester,” added the mother-to-be. “I hope this gives me cool points with my kids one day.”

Based on the characters of Belgian comics writer and artist Peyo, the movie is described as a comedic, musical adventure “that sets out to answer one of life’s biggest questions: What is a Smurf?” Chris Miller, the Oscar-nominated director of 2011’s Puss in Boots, is helming the project.

Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation kicked off with the studio unveiling its future plans for animated movies on the big screen, with films based on “Transformers,” “The Smurfs,” “Spongebob Squarepants” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender” now in the works.

The films were announced by Ramsey Naito, president of Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, who kicked off the show with a preview of her division’s first feature film “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” which is co-written by Seth Rogen and tells the story of how the Ninja Turtles step out of hiding to become accepted by the humans of New York. The movie is set for release on August 4.

Then, on July 19, 2024, Paramount will release the animated film “Transformers One,” which will star Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry as a younger Optimus Prime and Megatron and tell the story of how the two went from brothers-in-arms to sworn enemies.

Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania: Transformania has been granted an April 3 theatrical release date in China. Sony last summer licensed the fourth installment in the successful franchise to Amazon worldwide, but retained China rights.

With the date now confirmed, Sony gets a month’s lead time on promotion and marketing in China where the previous films have grossed a combined $63M, including over $32M from 2018’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation.

Although April 3 is a Sunday, it falls at the start of the Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping Day, which can be a lucrative box office period. Still, Transformania will arrive in China nearly three months after it was released on Amazon Prime Video in 240 other countries and territories.

The Hotel Transylvania franchise has grossed $1.36 billion worldwide, with each pic making more than its predecessor. Sony opted to go the Amazon route with this one to avoid...

The basic idea at the heart of the animated “Hotel Transylvania” movies has never exactly been dignifying toward some of cinema history’s most feared classical monsters. The blood-thirsty Count Dracula reimagined as a fretting, overprotective dad straight out of “Father of the Bride”? A shy Invisible Man, a phobic Frankenstein, a toilet-clogging Bigfoot and a gang of other famous beasts vacationing at their vampire pal’s secluded gothic resort, just to escape the terrors of ordinary humans that they somehow fear?

Twitch gamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins will make his animated movie debut, opposite Selena Gomez and Andy Samberg, in “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania,” the fourth installment in the hit family-friendly monster franchise.

Blevins, who has 17 million followers on Twitch, will play a character named Party Monster in the Sony Pictures Animation feature. He most recently made a cameo as himself in Ryan Reynolds’ action-comedy “Free Guy.” He also appeared on the second season of Fox’s reality music competition show “The Masked Singer” as “Ice Cream.” Blevins first gained wide attention in March 2018 when he played “Fortnite” with Drake, Travis Scott and JuJu Smith-Schuster on stream.

Amazon Prime Video will stream Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania: Transformania on January 14 in 240 countries and territories.

The tech company licensed rights to the fourth installment in the franchise from Sony earlier this year, extending its opportunistic streak as Covid continues to disrupt the film marketplace. Deadline reported discussions with Amazon in August, which were aimed at enabling the film to avoid a head-to-head matchup with another major animated title, Addams Family 2. Both had been scheduled to come out in early October.

Sony, which is unique among major studios for not having its own streaming platform to supply, has made moves during the pandemic like selling Greyhound to Apple and reaching a major overall agreement with Netflix.

As Variety reported in August when a deal was close, Amazon has licensed “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania” from Sony Pictures Animation. The fourth (and final) installment in the blockbuster franchise will stream globally — excluding China — on Prime Video on Jan. 14, 2022. The first “Hotel Transylvania” movie was released in 2012, and the series has grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide.

Amazon similarly licensed “Cinderella” from Sony last spring, and the Kay Cannon-directed musical premiered on Prime Video in September.

“Transformania” is directed by Derek Drymon and Jennifer Kluska from a script by Amos Vernon, Nunzio Randazzo and franchise creator/executive producer Genndy Tartakovsky. Brian Hull and Brad Abrell have replaced original stars Adam Sandler and Kevin James as Dracula and Frankenstein, respectively. The rest of the cast has returned, including Selena Gomez as Mavis, Andy Samberg as Johnny, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Kathryn Hahn, Jim Gaffigan, Molly Shannon, Keegan-Michael Key and Fran Drescher.

Colombian singer-songwriter Camilo dominated the announcement of the 2021 Latin Grammy Awards nominations, garnering 10, including nods in all three top categories — album of the year (for “Mis Manos”), record of the year (for “Vida de Rico” and “Amen”) and song of the year (for “Vida de Rico” and “Dios Así Lo Quiso”).

Also faring well with multiple nods were Dominican artist Juan Luis Guerra with six, Spanish rapper C. Tangana with five and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny with four.

Most of these top-nominated artists have enjoyed multiple trips to the podium in previous years— especially Guerra, a 20-time Latin Grammy winner. C. Tangana and Bad Bunny have won twice before. But with his staggering 10 nominations this year, Camilo comes into the ceremony only ever having won once before, for last year’s best pop song (his acceptance appearance is pictured above).

The 22nd annual show airs on Univision Nov. 18 live at 8 p.

The Latin Grammy nominations are in and leading the charge are Camilo, C. Tangana, and Bad Bunny.

Camilo has a total of 10 nominations including Record of the Year for “Vida De Rico” and one for “Amén”; Song of the Year for “Vida De Rico” and “Dios Asi Lo Quiso”; Best Pop Song “Vida De Rico,” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Mis Manos, among others.

Spanish Urban star C. Tangana earned five nominations, among them: Record of the Year for “Te Olvidaste,” Album Of The Year for El Madrileño, and Best Pop/Rock Song: “Hong Kong.”

Bad Bunny received four nods this year bringing his total career nominations to 15. His 2021 nominations include Album Of The Year for El Último Tour Del Mundo, Best Urban Music Album for El Último Tour Del Mundo, Best Rap/Hip Hop Song for “Booker T,” and Best Urban Song for “Dákiti.”

The franchise has grossed $1.3 billion in theaters worldwide since the first film’s debut in 2012. “Transformania” is the last in the series and will be directed by Derek Drymon and Jennifer Kluska. The film will star Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kathryn Hahn, Jim Gaffigan, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, David Spade and Keegan-Michael Key. Amos Vernon and Nunzio Randazzo wrote the script.

Many studios that don’t have their own streaming service have decided to sell their films during the pandemic. Sony sold “Greyhound” to Apple and “Happiest Season” to Hulu. Additionally, the studio partnered with Netflix on “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Fatherhood” and “Vivo,” and with Amazon on “Cinderella” starring Camila Cabello. Paramount Pictures, for example, sold “Coming 2 America” to Amazon as well.

The fourth entry in the kid-friendly franchise, which has grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide since 2012, was set to debut in theaters on Oct. 1. But the delta variant raises serious questions about the safety of children under 12 in public spaces, since there is no vaccine yet available for that age bracket and health experts say the highly contagious strain of Covid-19 is more virulent for younger people. The fourth and final installment in the “Hotel Transylvania” franchise, “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania,” will now debut during a far spookier month.

Previously dated for July 23, the Sony Pictures Animation film will now release on Oct. 1, kicking off the Halloween season. The movie will see Drac (Brian Hull) and the rest of the monsters embark on a brand-new adventure full of twists and turns. When a new invention created by Van Helsing (Jim Gaffigan) transforms all the monsters into humans and Johnny (Andy Samberg) into a monster, they must work together to switch back before the change becomes permanent.

“Hotel Transylvania” franchise creator Genndy Tartakovsky is the screenwriter and executive producer of the film, which is directed by Jennifer Kluska and Derek Drymon. Selena Gomez reprises her role as Drac’s daughter, Mavis, and also serves as an executive producer. “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania” is also executive produced by Michelle Murdocca and produced by Alice Dewey Goldstone.

Sony Pictures announced Friday that the final chapter of the “Hotel Transylvania” animated series called “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania” will now be released on Oct. 1, 2021.

The film was originally slated to be released on July 23.

Some of this could have to do with the fact that the domestic marketplace isn’t fully back yet: Portions of Canada remain closed, and capacity restrictions average around 66% — this despite the fact that L.A. and NYC are at 100% this weekend. The studio just tried to open Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, which it kept safe for a pure theatrical release during the pandemic, but families didn’t rush out to see it, with the sequel opening to $10.1M. Peter Rabbit 2 already has done $58M abroad.

Ahead of the summer release of Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, Moscow’s Dream Island Theme Park has officially opened its new “Hotel Transylvania” attraction. This comes as Transformania, the final chapter in the $1.3B franchise, is due for rollout beginning July 23 in North America and internationally from August 4. It is currently scheduled to hit Russia on August 5.

The three previous Ht films have been directed by Russian-American filmmaker Genndy Tartakovsky and have each counted Russia among their Top 10 overseas markets. The last picture, 2018’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, did over $19M there. Transformania is directed by Jennifer Kluska and Derek Drymon, with a script by Tartakovsky who also exec produces.

Selena Gomez is getting an upgraded suite for the next installment of the Sony Pictures Animation franchise “Hotel Transylvania.”

Gomez will serve as an executive producer in addition to voicing the co-lead on the project, Dracula’s thoroughly modern daughter Mavis.

The “Hotel” franchise has generated over $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office, consisting of three films and a spinoff series. Adam Sandler has voiced Dracula, the proprietor of a spooky hotel that serves as a haven for mythological monsters who cannot live openly among humans.

Jennifer Kluska and Derek Drymon will direct the new film, which is due to hit screen on Aug. 6, 2021. Series creator Genndy Tartakovsky returns as screenwriter and executive producer, along with Michelle Murdocca. Alice Dewey Goldstone also serves as producer.
