In this film, Cynthia Nixon has the face of someone with a secret. She plays the poet Emily Dickinson, and her face is fever-bright with irony and wit, then loneliness and fear. You can see how emotions are somehow stored in that face provisionally, being refined and saved for later – for the poetry she writes during the night. It is a face that changes as she grows older and moves along the spectrum of genius, publishing little or nothing, angry about the non-consolation of “posterity”. Terence Davies’s film and Nixon’s tremendous performance reminded me of Wh Auden saying that Matthew Arnold “thrust his gift in prison till it died”. It isn’t Dickinson’s gift for poetry that gets thrust in prison but her gift for love,...

A Film Comment Presents selection at last year's New York Film Festival and a highlight of this year's Glasgow Film Festival, A Quiet Passion directed by Terence Davies looks at questions of the soul, family, war, creativity and how to be true to yourself - all in stunningly beautiful images shot by Florian Hoffmeister (The Deep Blue Sea) and with costumes by Catherine Marchand. Cynthia Nixon is a wonderful, knowing, doubting, twinkling Emily Dickinson. Jennifer Ehle as her sister Vinnie, her perfect match in loving banter and bitter argument. When their brother Austin (Duncan Duff) marries Susan Gilbert (Jodhi May) he gives them another sister. The female bonding comes across as effortless and their wit has lightning speed. Keith Carradine, as the patriarch Edward, rounds out the family dynamics.

Terence Davies, the esteemed director of The House Of Mirth; Distant Voices, Still Lives; The Deep Blue Sea; The Long Day Closes, and Sunset Song spoke with me on the costume designs by Catherine Marchand for his latest film A Quiet Passion, starring Cynthia Nixon as Emily Dickinson with Jennifer Ehle as her sister Vinnie. The distributor has picked up Us rights to Terence Davies’ Emily Dickinson biopic following its North American premiere in the Masters section at Toronto on Monday.

Cynthia Dixon plays the 19th century American poet as she struggled against religion and social mores and a lack of reputation, culminating in her illness and death.

Most of her roughly 1,800 poems were unpublished during her lifetime, however she is now regarded as one of the great American literary artists.

A Quiet Passion received its world premiere at the Berlinale last February. It screens again in Toronto in Sunday.

Jennifer Ehle, Keith Carradine and Duncan Duff also star. Roy Boulter and Sol Papadopoulos of Liverpool-based Hurricane Films produced alongside Belgium’s Potemkino.

Gibson & MacLeod and Double Dutch International are among the executive producers and the latter handles international sales.

Or not really, for directors create their own genres, great ones do, and Terence Davies is among the greatest now at work. His Emily Dickinson, splendidly embodied by Cynthia Nixon, is no genteel figurine reciting favorite verses but a sharp and unyielding intelligence twisting in a severe body and a severe era. Right from the start, refusing to move to one side or another when her seminary is divided according to faith, she will not give an inch. (“You are alone in your rebellion,” snaps the headmistress, crucifix looming in the background.) At her Massachusetts family home, words—not just the budding poetess’ stanzas, but bon mots, barbs, any curlicues of witty verbiage—are cherished cracks in staid domesticity, like the songs in Meet Me in St. Louis.

The story of the reclusive American poet Emily Dickinson comes to life in Terence Davies’ “A Quiet Passion,” which will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival this fall.

A new festival trailer for the period drama was just released and showcases Cynthia Nixon as the renowned artist as she struggles with the world around her.

“A Quiet Passion” is a unique insight into Dickinson’s life and obsessions, and follows the writer from her schoolgirl days in Amherst, Massachusetts to her years writing in near-total isolation, where she produced over a thousand poems that are now regarded as the finest and most inventive in American literature.

“You are alone you your revolution, Ms. Dickinson,” spouts a stoic headmistress in the opening sequence of A Quiet Passion, a biopic of 19th-century American poet Emily Dickinson and the latest work from proud Liverpudlian auteur Terence Davies. In the scene, young Emily has apparently rejected both a life in the seminary and the option to be a practicing catholic, a decision the famously atheistic director clearly vibes with. That sense of empathy and understanding with his subject is rife throughout this quietly cleansing and exquisitely considered film, which shows the writer from her late teens (portrayed by Emma Bell) through to adulthood (Cynthia Nixon) and old age.

This frank introductory scene is one of a few exceptions — it occurs outside the grounds of Dickinson’s family home, where the majority of this film takes place. Here, Davies imagines and reenacts delicately detailed social exchanges between the family members and their various bourgeois guests.

Don Cheadle’s Miles Davies’ biopic to get international premiere.

The Berlin International Film Festival (Feb 11-21) has unveiled the eight-strong line-up for its Berlinale Special strand, which includes recent works by contemporary filmmakers and biopics of renowned personalities.

The programme includes the world premiere of Terence Davies’ drama biopic A Quiet Passion, which stars Sex and the City’s Cynthia Nixon as the celebrated American poet Emily Dickinson, charting her life from her early days as a young schoolgirl to her later years as a reclusive artist. Jennifer Ehle (Fifty Shades Of Grey) and Keith Carradine (Nashville) co-star.

The line-up also includes the international premiere of Miles Ahead, Don Cheadle’s directorial debut in which he also stars as jazz pioneer Miles Davis in late 1970s Manhattan, dealing with sycophants, industry executives, career highs and lows and memories of the love of his life, Frances Taylor.

In his four decades of filmmaking, British auteur Terence Davies has never unveiled consecutive projects, until now. Following his Toronto Film Festival premiered Sunset Song (which was also the unveiling platform for his 2011 The Deep Blue Sea), Davies has completed A Quiet Passion, a biopic of American poet Emily Dickinson, with Cynthia Nixon starring as the reclusive artist. Strangely enough, 2016 will also see another portrait of Dickinson from American filmmaker Madeleine Olnek with Molly Shannon. Davies seems to be taking a more comprehensive route, and following Nixon’s unforgettable turn in this year’s James White from Josh Mond, we’re anxious to see her take on the iconic poet, a bleak, lonely subject who should fit neatly into Davies’ cinematic interest.
