Update: Swept Away, the musical featuring songs by The Avett Brothers that recently posted a December 15 closing date, has been extended through Sunday, December 29.
Producers Matthew Masten, Sean Hudock and Madison Wells Live say the two-week extension at the Longacre Theatre is due to a surge in ticket sales since the closing was first announced last week.
Last night, actor Stark Sands, one of the show’s stars, made the extension announcement during curtain call. “The story we tell is about the will to survive against incredible odds,” Sands said. “Last week it was announced that Swept Away would be closing and then, something happened. We came to work the next day, and we walked out to a completely sold-out house. And then the next day it happened again and then it happened again…I’ve never seen it before; we’ve never felt this…So I am pleased to...

New Broadway musical Swept Away will close Dec. 15, a little less than a month after opening on Broadway.
Featuring a score by the Avett Brothers, the musical will have played 32 regular performances and 20 previews at the time of its closing. The show, about a shipwreck and the crew’s struggle to survive in its aftermath, received a Critic’s Pick from the New York Times but mixed reviews elsewhere. The musical has not had strong grosses or attendance since starting previews on Broadway on Oct. 29.
During Thanksgiving week, the most recent week of grosses that is typically lucrative for Broadway shows, the musical saw its capacity fall to 61 percent at the Longacre Theatre and brought in just above $412,000, which is below the running cost of a typical musical.

Suits is one of the best and most popular legal dramas that managed to make the profession of lawyer cool again. Created by Aaron Korsh, the USA Network series follows Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), who has a photographic memory and joins Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) at a prestigious law firm. The only problem with that is Mike didn’t actually go to law school and he doesn’t have a degree about which he has to lie to everyone. Suits ran for 9 brilliant seasons and ended its run in 2019. So, if you loved the witty banter, high stakes, and compelling characters in Suits here are some similar brilliant shows you should check out next.

USA Network legal drama Suits has entered an important second phase in its TV life. After airing throughout the 2010s on basic cable, the show about a very busy New York law firm has become an unexpected hit in the streaming world.
Though all nine seasons of the series have been available to stream on Peacock for awhile now, the addition of the first eight seasons to Netflix on June 17 helped supercharge its popularity. According to Nielsen, Suits has broken streaming records with the number of minutes it was streamed across multiple platforms this summer. Anecdotally, you may even know of several folks cranking through the show’s 134 episodes right now – or maybe that person is even you!
While Suits‘ “second phase” as a bona fide streaming phenomenon is an impressive achievement for any show with cable origins, there is still one more phase in the TV life cycle it needed to conquer: a spinoff.

Shaun of the Dead famously launched with the tagline “Zom, Rom, Com”, as in “zombies”, “romance” and “comedy”. It is fair to say, that is a tough combination to get right, and Shaun of the Dead naturally nailed it.
Werewolves Within takes these themes, adding a dash of small-town Americana charm and running with them. There is a healthy chunk of “Slither” (criminally overlooked) and a little bit of The Thing style paranoia, as a scientist gets drunk as a natural reaction to what her “science stuff” has told her about the recent, grizzly deaths. Our film kicks off, with our instantly lovable Finn (Sam Richardson) heading to a small town, “Beaverfield”, shortly before a blizzard hits, to start his new job as the park ranger.

Based on a popular videogame, this film features Sam Richardson as Finn, a Park Ranger assigned to Beaverfield, where a natural gas company is trying to tap into the resources below the town and adjacent to a National Park. He is welcomed into town by mail carrier Cecily (portrayed by the AT&T spokes woman Milana Vayntrub), who introduces him to the various townsfolk, and they begin to get murdered one by one, suggesting a Werewolf!

The small town of Beaverfield is much like many others across the nation in 2021. There is political polarization, longtime residents suspicious of newcomers, a stark wealth gap, infidelity, gossip, and at least one guy who is either a scary loner or just wants to be left the hell alone. But in the new film Werewolves Within what really sets Beaverfield apart is their lycanthrope problem.
Based loosely on the multiplayer Ubisoft VR game of the same name, the film — which is now playing in theaters and hits Digital Rental & VOD on July 2 — is a horror-comedy whodunit where a handful of locals are locked down during a winter storm while a monster hides amongst them.

In my book, director Josh Ruben is two-for-two after his efforts on last year’s Scare Me and now with his follow-up film, the horror comedy/whodunnit Werewolves Within. Written by Mishna Wolff and based on the Ubisoft game, Werewolves Within is easily one of the most confidently crafted genre mash-ups to come along in years that delivers a ton of laughs, a compelling mystery, and an incredibly talented ensemble who all deliver an array of memorable and scene-stealing performances. I’m no psychic, but I do suspect that by the end of this year, many horror fans will be touting Werewolves Within amongst their favorite genre films of 2021.
In Werewolves Within, we’re first introduced to Finn (Sam Richardson), who is heading to his new Ranger post in the snowy, small town of Beaverfield. He’s been recently “sort of” broken up with by his girlfriend, and so Finn...

Josh Ruben (Scare Me) opens his new film Werewolves Within with what may be a first, a quote from Mr. Rogers. Being as that was a kid’s TV show and this is an R-rated adaptation of a horror video, excuse me, virtual reality game that might not seem to be sending the right message. Actually, it turns out to be extremely fitting.
Finn is a forest ranger who’s freshly arrived in the small town of Beaverfield. Beaverfield is currently in the middle of a crisis, Sam Parker’s company Midland Oil wants to run a pipeline through the town. And that has the population divided. Since Summertime is the movie season for both horror flicks and rowdy comedies, how about a new addition to the growing genre subsection that’s best known as (duh) the horror-comedy? Of course, it’s changed quite a bit since Hollywood’s Golden Age in which a popular comic actor, or team, would scurry away (usually in “undercranked” fast motion) from a billowing sheet or, often, a crook in a rubber “fright mask”. As monster flicks have become more gruesome and graphic, the “comic takes” have followed suit with the comic heroes frequently covered in gore and viscera by the final fade-out. This week’s new release harkens back to the older days as it involves a “new take’ on one of the classic monsters. But, it’s also based on a fairly recent video game, one that tosses in another element: mystery. In the tradition of Ten Little Indians,...

Arriving in theaters this weekend courtesy of IFC Films is Werewolves Within, the feature film adaptation of the Ubisoft game, which was written by Mishna Wolff (the most perfect last name for this project ever) and directed by Josh Ruben. A horror comedy whodunnit centered around a werewolf that’s terrorizing the picturesque mountain town of Beaverfield, Werewolves Within stars Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub, Harvey Guillén, Cheyenne Jackson, Michaela Watkins, Michael Chernus, Catherine Curtin, George Basil, Sarah Burns, Wayne Duvall, Rebecca Henderson, and Glenn Fleshler.

If not for a Ubisoft logo revealing the game company as a producer of Werewolves Within, I would be wondering what the point of buying licensing rights was since this adaptation isn’t even set in medieval times. I’m not sure there’s more that sets it apart from other variations on Mafia (the deduction party game created in 1986 by Dimitry Davidoff before getting a fresh spin as Werewolf by Andrew Plotkin in 1997 and more recently appropriated into the online sensation Among Us) since I’ve never played the VR title, but it appears anyone could just write a murder mystery populated by over-the-top paranoids without worrying about already existing IP. I guess if you already own that IP anyway, though, why not utilize it for cross-media synergy?

“Trespass and die,” reads an unneighborly sign glimpsed early in Josh Ruben’s agile, niftily directed whodunit “Werewolves Within.” While the placard specifically refers to some local’s private property, one could safely apply the warning to the whole snow-clad Vermont village that surrounds it. Welcome to Beaverfield, a sleepy town chock-full of secrets, lies and ideological disparities you should only enter at your own peril. But know that it’s a risk well worth taking, especially if Rian Johnson’s delectable caper “Knives Out” has recently scratched your itch for cozily inviting, steadily funny murder mysteries where the identity of the killer is anyone’s guess until the end.
Along with his crafty screenwriter Mishna Wolff, Ruben constructs a similarly snug and entertaining world, one filled with wood-heavy interiors illuminated by crackling fireplaces and golden lanterns, where a group of terrified, booze-chugging Beaverfield dwellers has to wait out a snowstorm,...

"There are people out there... People worth saving." Paramount Pictures has debuted one final new 2021 trailer for A Quiet Place: Part II, the sequel to John Krasinski & Emily Blunt's sci-fi monster thriller A Quiet Place from 2018. It was originally supposed to open last March, and after numerous delays, they've finally reset the opening for this May. Following the traumatic events at home (seen in the first movie), the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path. Starring Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe as the Abbott family. Newcomers featured in this sequel include Cillian Murphy, Djimon Hounsou, Wayne Duvall, and Lauren-Ashley Cristiano. This a fantastic final trailer, and really really makes me want to go see this in theaters. Looks thrilling as hell!

It took writer and director Aaron Sorkin fourteen years after the initial meeting with Steven Spielberg at his house on a Saturday back in 2006 to finally get “The Trial of the Chicago 7” made. And according to Sorkin, it finally came together thanks to former president Donald Trump.
“I don’t want to give Donald Trump credit for anything, but he’s the one who got Chicago seven made,” Sorkin tells moderator Jimmie Briggs at The Wrap’s screening series of the film. “Because he would have these protests, he would have these rallies, and there would be protesters at the rallies, and he would start getting nostalgic about the old days when they ‘Carry that guy out of here on a stretcher,’ ‘I’d like to beat the crap out of him,’ ‘Let’s punch him right in the face.'”

After an explosive teaser trailer during Sunday Night Football in which Aaron Sorkin declared “the whole world is watching,” Netflix has released a more sentimental and fuller look at the drama of “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” one in which Sacha Baron Cohen as Abbie Hoffman explains what he’s willing to give to keep the revolution going.

Press also got their first look at “The Trial of the Chicago 7” on Tuesday, as the film figures to be a big Oscar player for Netflix. You would hope so after it boasts a cast that includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Keaton, Frank Langella, John Carroll Lynch, Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance, Alex Sharp, Jeremy Strong, Noah Robbins, Danny Flaherty, Ben Shenkman,...
