After years of waiting for their franchise to get back on-track, "Terminator" fans finally have a decent on-screen installment in the long-suffering saga. After several studios tried and failed to right the "Terminator" ship, a savior arrived in the unlikely form of Netflix. The streamer's new "Terminator Zero" anime show is a gorgeous and gruesome eight-episode series that represents showrunner/EP/writer Mattson Tomlin's attempt to inject a bit of horror back into the franchise.
It's an element of the original two movies that has been conspicuously absent from subsequent entries. With its recent release on Netflix, Terminator Zero has become the talk of the town. The series had a colossal responsibility of doing justice to the legacy of the Terminator franchise, and it seems to be doing quite well on that front. It’s a great blend of horror, action, and sci-fi. The last time this combination was seen in the Terminator series was in the original Terminator movie (1984). Since then, the franchise has become more action-oriented.

After many years, the original vibe has returned with the Netflix anime series. The makers knew what the fans were missing and they brought it back. This is also the reason why Terminator Zero has surpassed the Terminator Franchise, and currently stands at the second position, only behind the original movie.

Netflix’s latest sci-fi anime Terminator Zero presents itself as a brand new chapter to the existing lore of the Terminator franchise by offering a different perspective on the fateful Judgment Day, introducing fresh characters, settings, and inventive concepts—which goes on to show the versatile potential of the central theme of man/machine conflict. At the same time, the series acknowledges preceding live-action movies through a number of Easter eggs, references, and clever thematic significance, which hints at the existing connection among all the stories set in the Terminator universe. Sure, fans don’t get to see any Connor or Reese trying to avert the impending doom or two Terminators duking it out; instead, a potent mix of physical and psychological dread induced by artificial intelligence is on display throughout eight episodes. But there are enough clues scattered around which eagle-eyed fans of the series can identify quite easily,...

Finally, one of the most-anticipated Netflix anime series, Terminator Zero, hit the screens on 29th August 2024. Since its very announcement, the series has created quite a hype amongst its viewers, while keeping the fans on the edge of their seats.

Set in 1997 Tokyo, this plot offers a fresh and unique take on the Terminator franchise. But shockingly, the showrunners had to cut a historically inaccurate scene, set in 1997 Tokyo. If it got released with the initial script, it could’ve ruined its total reputation in Japan!

Mattson Tomlin, the screenwriter for Terminator Zero, obviously made a huge mistake when he set up one particular scene in 1997 Tokyo. He had armed ordinary citizens with guns, which was the biggest mistake possible for the Japanese audience.

The Terminator series enjoys an extremely dedicated fanbase that remembers the movies by heart. First announced in 2021, Netflix’s Terminator Zero anime is finally here. It bears the responsibility to live up to the expectations and experiences fans have had with the Terminator series, especially the original James Cameron classic.
To the joy of fans, Terminator Zero anime was in good hands as Masashi Kudo and Mattson Tomlin had always planned to keep the key elements of the original movies intact.

In the sci-fi genre, there are limited franchises that have made a name for themselves. While there are worthy competitors like Star Wars and Star Trek, many of them couldn’t come close to James Cameron’s Terminator. To continue riding on the wave of success, the franchise decided to feature the cyborg in a never-before-seen avatar with Terminator Zero.

Just in time for Judgment Day, Netflix has a new installment in the “Terminator” franchise for fans of the iconic, long-running sci-fi action franchise. This time, however, you won’t see any familiar faces — the series is animated. However, you might recognize some of the voices, so we’ve put together a handy guide to the “Terminator Zero” cast.
You won’t see Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese or Arnold’s T-800 in this story — it introduces a new timeline and all new characters to go with it. Set in 1997, Japan, “Terminator Zero” focuses on a developer named Malcolm Lee, who is hard at work on another AI system to compete with Skynet and save the human race. Naturally, a Terminator unit is sent back in time to target him and his three children, while a soldier from the future is sent back with a mission of her own.

As the first venture of the Terminator franchise in the animated medium, Netflix’s Terminator Zero emerges as a much-needed major upgrade in the storytelling department, taking the franchise in a new direction in the process. While initially the series progressed along a familiar route, the condensed final two episodes of the first season of the anime changed even long-time viewers’ understanding of the Terminator lore in a major way by exploring new possibilities while exploring protagonist Malcolm Lee’s past. A second season of the anime hasn’t been announced just yet, but the highly positive reception among fans and critics indicates that Terminator Zero will indeed get a continuation, which leads us to speculate on a number of plot points that may take shape in the upcoming season.

For over the last three decades, the Terminator movies have been running the same tedious plot of super intelligent AI hive minds. Skynet keeps trying to stop the possibility of human resistance against its complete domination in the future by sending Terminators to change events in the past—finally, with Netflix’s Terminator Zero, the major loophole in the system is addressed. What if the timeline itself is not linear, as it is most often assumed to be, which means an alteration of events of the past will create a completely new timeline—without affecting the original one at all? The timeline trouble, along with a set of philosophical questions like the worth of human existence, the notion of creation of life, and the dialectical ideologies of sentience and life itself regarding humans and machines, is the central premise of Terminator Zero, a brilliant anime entry to the franchise that...

The first two Terminator movies are considered masterpieces, and for good reason. They gave us iconic characters, memorable catchphrases, hummable music, the most jaw-dropping action sequences of all time, and a message to humanity about its overreliance on technology. And while James Cameron moved away from the director’s seat so that he could focus on other projects, the Terminator franchise continued to expand via movies, comics, novels, video games, and a TV show. All of these installments have their own dedicated fandoms, except for maybe Terminator: Dark Fate, but let’s be honest, none of them have managed to attain the kind of popularity that those first two movies did. So, it was pretty normal for fans and casual viewers to be apprehensive about a Terminator Netflix series as it didn’t feature everyone’s favorite characters and it was animated. But I’m here to tell you that...

In our ongoing age of intellectual property, when any idea is a good idea so long as it’s pegged to an old idea people might still like, it’s honestly remarkable that a once-successful franchise like “The Terminator” simply can’t get itself back into gear. Following the success of 1984’s original film and the mega-success of 1991’s “T2,” the 2000s have not been kind to the red-eyed killing machine, no matter how it tries to come back. Sure, “Terminator 3” was a respectable effort, but the B-movie action flick is a far cry from its groundbreaking predecessors. Then came 2009’s “Terminator Salvation,” which proved to be anything but a savior. McG’s dark-and-gritty vision of the future at least had the courage to leave Judgment Day and Arnold Schwarzenegger behind (sort of), but its muddled look and middling box office didn’t produce too many broken hearts over the abandoned sequels.

When writer/director James Cameron and producer Gale Anne Hurd came up with "The Terminator" back in the early 1980s, they couldn't have possibly predicted that their dystopian sci-fi future, where an artificial neural network-based conscious group mind and artificial general superintelligence system called Skynet would one day determine humans to be a threat and attempt to wipe them out, would one day feel within the realm of possibility. The questions constantly looming over the characters in the "Terminator" universe are ones of absolutes: Can humanity be saved from the threat of Skynet, and more importantly, are we deserving of such salvation?
According to "Terminator Zero" showrunner and writer Mattson Tomlin, this is at the heart of his new anime series for Netflix. As he told Tudum, "I'm not a nihilist — I'm a humanist, and I love people, and I think that there's a reason that we're on this planet.

Ever since its inception in 1984, the Terminator franchise has managed to survive and excite audiences for all these many years, although the later films and shows were considered inadequate by most. The new Netflix anime series, Terminator Zero, takes us back to the franchise’s sci-fi universe but with a clever, and much-needed, deviation. While we have only been watching the consequences of robots taking over the world from the perspective of the United States of America, this anime series wonders what other countries might have been up to during the same time. As the plot alternates between Japan of 1997 and the wastelands of 2022, Terminator Zero asks questions about human nature and artificial intelligence as a human invention, while also being thoroughly entertaining through its 8 episodes.

The narrative of Terminator Zero runs almost parallel to that of the events of the Terminator movies. In the United States of America, Cyberdyne Systems is launching Skynet, thereby bringing about Judgement Day, i.e., the extinction of mankind. And in Tokyo, a scientist called Malcolm Lee is building an A.I. called Kokoro to counter Skynet. Now, Malcolm spends the show’s runtime wondering whether or not he should allow Kokoro to connect with the internet, because he is afraid that if Kokoro analyzes humanity, just like Skynet, it’ll see humans as the cancer of Earth and decide to eradicate them. Kokoro surprises Malcolm by not only stopping Skynet from exterminating mankind, but also by enslaving the entirety of Tokyo with the 1Nno bots. Although it seems like Skynet has lost and Malcolm has won, the Terminator tries to turn the odds in Skynet’s favor by kidnapping Kenta,...

The Terminator franchise has entertained sci-fi fans for decades with its imaginings of mechanical armies waging war across time itself. From James Cameron’s original low-budget classic to the epic sequel he crafted, the movies ask profound questions about fate versus free will and humanity’s fraught relationship with advanced technology.

James Cameron's "The Terminator" is an undeniable action-horror classic, but seven years later — armed with groundbreaking digital technology and a budget that would make it the most expensive film at the time in history — he completely changed action films forever with "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." In the decades that have followed, countless creatives have desperately been trying to capture a morsel of the feast served up by Cameron, to varying degrees of success. Each "Terminator" sequel since, as well as the short-lived (and underrated) TV spin-off "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" exist in the shadow of Cameron's masterpiece, stalked by the looming threat of his genius not unlike a T-1000 tracking John Connor.

‘Terminator Zero’ turns to a striking anime aesthetic that breathes fresh life into the flailing sci-fi franchise and helps it break exciting, new ground.
Why are we still telling Terminator stories?
What started as a fascinating and frightening horror/science fiction calling card for a scrappy James Cameron has increasingly faced diminishing returns. Terminator told the perfect story across its first two feature films, but the four subsequent sequels and reboots have struggled to justify their existence. There’s a natural compulsion to return to the world of Skynet, the human Resistance, and nigh-invulnerable cyborg assassins, but the series has failed to find battery life as it’s added more Ram to its hard drive. At a certain point, one just needs to accept that Terminator works best as a one-two punch instead of a sprawling cinematic universe. All the Arnold Schwarzenegger cameos in the world can’t fix something that’s creatively bankrupt.

After a series of misfires with unnecessary sequels, the Terminator franchise has decided to move back to the past with an anime adaptation, Terminator Zero, produced by Netflix, and it does look promising. Without delving into the technicalities or narrative, the most exciting aspect of the anime, which anime fans will find interesting as well, is the fact that the series is directed by Masashi Kudō, who was instrumental as the animator and character designer of the Bleach anime. The trailer itself hints at showing a different aspect of the Judgement Day in-universe event, and from the retro 90s anime visuals vivid in several sequences, the dystopian cyberpunk sci-fi series seems to have found a perfect match. We would like to briefly discuss everything viewers can expect from the series and share possible plot details highlighted in the trailer.

Even before the success of “Shoplifters” the family drama has been one of the most popular genre within Japanese cinema. As a mirror of social, political and economic issues the family portrait can be quite powerful as many artists, also from other media, have found out which is perhaps why these images have become so frequent. However, it takes a certain kind of director, among other things, to make a family stand out, but in the case of Nobuhiko Obayashi's “Seven Weeks” we luckily have one of those features. Described by the director as “Guernica in moving images”, the story Obayashi tells in one of his last movies touches upon a death in a family, and the kind of conflicts and memories it brings for the relatives left behind, while at the same time presenting a uniquely maverick portrayal of post-war Japan.

The first teaser for Netflix anime Terminator Zero offered a tantalising if all-too-brief glimpse at Mattson Tomlin (The Batman II) and Ghost In The Shell animation outfit Production Ig's upcoming take on James Cameron's iconic sci-fi franchise. The latest trailer, released earlier today, gives us a better sense of what the eight-part series has in store for us as it introduces viewers to Malcolm Lee (André Holland), a genius scientist who becomes the target of Timothy Olyphant's time-traveling Terminator when his work in artificial intelligence places him in AI big bad Skynet's crosshairs. Check out the apocalyptic new trailer below:
Set after the events of James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day but outside of the Connors' orbit, Tomlin's series will see Holland's maverick scientist Malcolm, plagued by nightmares of a nuclear apocalypse, take the fight to Skynet with the creation of AI Kokoro (Rosario Dawson). “What makes you think humanity is worth saving?” is the question posed at the very top of Netflix’s latest trailer for “Terminator Zero,” the animated eight-episode series premiering Aug. 29.
Notably, there is no immediate answer.
But the powerful opening sequence of the trailer — which finds scientist Malcolm Lee and his children experiencing the apocalypse before a time-traveling soldier from 2022 comes hurtling into 1997 to try to prevent the Skynet AI from ending all of humanity — sets up the series nicely. In addition to the A-lister voice cast, and Sonoya Mizuno as the time-traveling Kokoro), the animation by Production Ig looks to be both gorgeous and horrifying; seeing someone’s skin burned off in a nuclear blaze is not an everyday occurrence in mainstream animation, and we can’t wait to see what other horrors unfold.

As a war between humans and AI machines rages, the animated character Eiko, a resistance fighter voiced by Sonoya Mizuno, battles a cyborg assassin from the future in the official trailer for Netflix’s Terminator Zero, which was released on Wednesday.
Eiko has been sent back in time to protect scientist Malcolm Lee, voiced by André Holland, as he develops Kokoro, or an advanced artificial intelligence as a rival to the malicious Skynet.
“If the Terminator can get to Malcolm, the children will be its next target,” Eiko says at one point in the trailer as Skynet’s unrelenting killer robot hunts for Lee and the anime series’ dramatic stakes rise. The Netflix series from The Batman II writer Mattson Tomlin is set to debut on Aug. 29, or “Judgment Day,” and will premiere opposite The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video.

The series is called Terminator Zero, and it is going to hit Netflix on a very special date that will pay tribute to the original movies in the franchise.
Here is when Terminator Zero is coming to Netflix, and a look at the first trailer.

“You can never go back,” warns Eiko (Sonoya Mizuno) in the trailer for the upcoming Netflix anime series Terminator Zero.
That’s a strange thing to hear from a character who literally went back in time. A human resistance soldier from 2022, Eiko has been sent to the year 1997. She’s there to stop a Terminator (voiced by Timothy Olyphant), itself sent to kill someone who might threaten the Machines in the future.
That sure sounds like Terminator Zero is moving back, all the way to the timeline of the first two (and easily best) Terminator movies. But Terminator Zero puts a twist on the proceedings by focusing not on any Connors or even Miles Dyson, the scientist who co-creates evil AI Skynet.
Rather, Terminator Zero features Malcolm Lee (voiced by Andre Holland), a scientist living in Japan. Lee is working on an AI that threatens to compete with Skynet. As the trailer shows,...

Judgment Day is almost here as the trailer for the Netflix animated series Terminator Zero arrives. Have a gander within.
It was only a matter of days ago that we learned that Netflix’s upcoming animated series, Terminator Zero, aims to recapture the dark, slasher movie vibes of 1984’s The Terminator. That, it turns out, was preparing the way for the show’s debut trailer, which you can find below these very words.
As we heard last week, Terminator Zero takes place after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and does what most of us did and pretends that all the films that came afterwards didn’t happen. Featuring a starry voice cast including Sonoya Mizuno (House Of The Dragon), Ann Dowd, Timothy Olyphant and Rosario Dawson, the show flips between an alternate reality 1997 and 2022, when Skynet is about to unleash its AI-driven apocalypse, dubbed Judgment Day (sic) on humanity.

The Terminator series has long flirted with horror. James Cameron’s original film is shot through with an almost slasher atmosphere; Terminator 2 gave us those flame-fuelled visions of Judgement Day; some of the sequels that followed could, arguably, be called horror-shows. But in Netflix’s new anime series Terminator Zero, cinema’s most legendary cyborg saga will be taking an event bigger tilt into scary-movie territory, bringing an additional fear-factor to the (already terrifying) notion of the robot apocalypse.
“I wanted to lean into that body-horror, serial-killer feel of the first film,” showrunner Mattson Tomlin tells Empire, “which was almost like Friday The 13th or A Nightmare On Elm Street.” His show – directed by Masashi Kudō – is set in Japan in 1997, and follows Japanese tech genius Malcolm Lee as he creates his own A.I. to combat Skynet. “The series also incorporates J-Horror [Japanese horror] elements,” explains Kudō. “[We] focused on emphasising...

Illustrations by Zoé Maghamès Peters. The Nagano prefecture is a snowy, mountainous region of Japan where Tokyo residents like to ski and wander through the forests, away from the pressures of the city. Some even have country houses there. This is the area where composer Eiko Ishibashi lives with her partner, musician Jim O’Rourke. In 2022, Ishibashi received a request from promoter Florian Felix to present a combination of brand-new music and images in concert. Ishibashi asked Ryusuke Hamaguchi if he was interested in helping put together the visual part. The two had gotten to know each other when they collaborated on his Oscar-winning film Drive My Car (2021). “He came out here to Nagano to see what he could shoot,” O’Rourke recalled when we spoke earlier this year, “and he also shot Eiko and a few other people playing.” O’Rourke performed with the group, too. More than ever, it’s hard to imagine a world where evil does not exist, so it should come as no surprise that the world captured in Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s film with that very same title feels out of step with our own.
“Evil Does Not Exist,” the Japanese auteur’s follow-up to “Drive My Car,” opens with a long shot that tracks through the forest, gazing up at the sky through intersecting branches that crisscross above. The pace is calm and unhurried, leisurely even, if not for the strings that accompany it. Ishibashi Eiko’s score, her second for Hamaguchi, is calming, too, at first. But then discordant notes gradually weave in, hinting at something darker under the melody and behind the trees. The longer this shot continues, the more eerie it feels, as if we’re gliding into another reality. Suddenly, it ends abruptly, jolting the audience into...
