Attack of the Killer Gourds! 6 of the Scariest Pumpkins in Horror
Image
For a symbol that’s often regarded as the true mascot of the Halloween season, it’s strange that pumpkins aren’t the focus of more horror movies – especially when you consider the spooky folklore surrounding jack ‘o lanterns. Sure, pumpkins are featured in several popular franchises, but they’re usually relegated to atmospheric set dressing meant to enhance the seasonal mood.

However, that’s not always the case. And with Halloween finally upon us, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest pumpkins in horror! After all, it’s only a matter of time before these autumn gourds begin fighting back against the folks who gleefully mutilate them year after year.

In order to keep things interesting, we’ll only be including a single pumpkin per franchise while also disregarding the overall quality of the movies that they appear in. We also won...

Hammer Films is back with the brand new movie Doctor Jekyll starring Eddie Izzard (now available on VOD outlets at home), and we’ve learned that a documentary about the legendary studio is also coming soon. It will celebrate the 90-year anniversary of Hammer Films.

Deadline reports this morning that Sky has joined forces with Deep Fusion Films on Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters, a feature documentary releasing in November 2024.

The outlet continues, “Deep Fusion co-founder Benjamin Field is helming the doc, with the director revisiting the people in front of and behind the camera who made the operation a byword for horror, and will include numerous key contributors, unseen archive footage and interviews with the likes of Tim Burton, John Carpenter and Joe Dante.

Variety reports this morning that British theater producer John Gore has acquired Hammer Films and Studios, and he’ll lead a new team aiming to revitalize the legendary brand.

“Under Gore’s management, the plan is to invest significantly in Hammer Films to breathe new life into the studio, blending the nostalgic charm of Hammer with modern cinematic style and innovation, while preserving its heritage and library,” Variety’s exclusive report details. “A new slate of films and projects will be unveiled imminently.”

Dev Patel: ‘I didn't know what I was getting myself into’
The global success of Slumdog Millionaire thrust the schoolboy (and his girlfriend Freida Pinto) into the limelight. But has fame been good to him? Seven years on, he talks break-ups, beards and typecasting. Portraits: Paul Farrell. Styling: Aradia Crockett

Dev Patel is tugging away at his hair – his new, unruly, GQ-ish hair – and asking the Guardian photographer which beard oil to buy. The once dorky kid from Slumdog Millionaire, with the wobbly Indian accent and the Oscar team win, is posing gamely in pyjamas in a cramped room in Soho, London, looking very little like the Dev Patel you remember. He’s taller, for one thing. Broader. Beardier. He’s definitely got a swagger on. Is this his man-over?

“It’s for a film,” he explains when we sit down, his arms and legs origamied on a hotel sofa. “My parents hate it, they think I look too messy. I...

A Clockwork Orange 40th Anniversary Blu-ray Debuts on May 31st
Malcolm McDowell
Stanley Kubrick was one of the great filmmakers of our time and his profound influence on motion pictures continues to this day. His 1971 film, A Clockwork Orange, starring Malcolm McDowell, portrayed an oppressive lawless society where man was reduced to little more than a machine. The film introduced into popular culture the concept of "ultra-violence," as singing, tap-dancing, derby-topped hooligan Alex (McDowell) has a "good time" - at the tragic expense of others. His journey from amoral punk to brainwashed proper citizen and back again forms the dynamic arc of Stanley Kubrick's future-shock vision of Anthony Burgess' novel.

This was a powerful film made by a director at the height of his artistry and its impact generated worldwide controversy. Forty years later, the world is a different place but the film's power still entices, shocks and mesmerizes today.
