The 2025 Sundance Film Festival turned out to be a low-key affair, but it got off to a rousing start with a $15 million world rights sale of Together, the body horror film acquired by Neon. Starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie, it gives Neon a chance to follow up the rousing genre success of Longlegs last year.
Together, which also has landed a berth at SXSW, is written/directed by Michael Shanks. Franco and Brie are a couple that moves to the countryside and a supernatural encounter begins an extreme transformation of their love, their lives, and their flesh. It was a real crowd pleaser to the Midnight Madness audience.
The film was produced and financed by Picturestart, marking the latest in a string of notable deals put together by the company formed by Erik Feig after a run at Summit and Lionsgate that included The Twilight Saga, The Hunger Games,...

There have been many “hunting humans” thrillers, horror films, and action movies released over the decades – and Deadline has just broken the news on a new “hunting humans” project that is set to star Kiernan Shipka (The Last Showgirl) and Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire). This one is called The Nowhere Game and has David Charbonier and Justin Douglas Powell (The Djinn) on board to direct from a screenplay by Alex Pototsky that was featured on the 2023 Black List, a showcase of the industry’s most liked unproduced screenplays.
The Nowhere Game will follow Carin (Grace) and Allie (Shipka), whose road trip takes a harrowing turn when the two young women are kidnapped by a cold-blooded sadist and thrust into a brutal game of survival. With a short head start, Carin and Allie will be set loose in the forest with limited supplies while being hunted in front of an...

The story follows Carin (Grace) and Allie (Shipka), two friends on a road trip that turns into a nightmare. They’re abducted by a ruthless predator and forced into a brutal survival game, broadcast live to an unseen audience.

It's always exciting when a new horror film gets picked up, particularly by distributors like A24 or Neon. These companies have a keen eye for great horror content, and more often than not, the films they acquire are usually both unique and boundary-pushing. One of these indie powerhouses just snagged the worldwide rights to a new body horror, and based on what we know so far about this movie, it's something you're going to want to see.
We're talking about Neon, the studio that delivered what is arguably the best horror film of 2024, Longlegs. If you haven't seen Longlegs, maybe you're familiar with other Neon horror movies such as Immaculate, Cuckoo, Possessor and Infinity Pool. Now, the company has another horror flick to add to its lineup, and we're hoping it hits theaters this year.
The film is titled Together, and it stars real-life husband and wife Alison Brie and Dave Franco.

Update: Neon has sent out a press release to confirm that the distribution deal has closed and they have acquired the worldwide rights to Together.
The original article follows:
JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to see the body horror film Together at the Sundance Film Festival and said that “horror fans are going to have a blast” with this one when it makes its way out into the world. (You can read his full 8/10 review at This Link.) Now, it’s looking like Neon will be the distributor to bring this good time to horror fans, as Deadline reports that, after “a days long bidding battle,” Neon is close to securing the worldwide rights to the film. WME Independent has been fielding offers from interested distributors ever since Together‘s premiere screening on the 26th, and Deadline reports that all of the major buyers of indie fare were in the mix.

Exclusive: Neon has emerged from a days long bidding battle near a deal to acquire WW rights to Together, the Michael Shanks scripted and directed crowd pleaser that stars Dave Franco, Alison Brie and Damon Herriman.
The film premiered in the midnight section on January 26 at the Eccles Theater and WME Independent has been fielding the offers ever since. All the major buyers of indie fare were in the scrum. Will tell you when it closes how much the film went for, but the numbers last night were in the mid teens, so the final probably approached $20M, a good haul for a Midnight Madness entry.
The logline: With a move to the countryside already testing the limits of a couple’s relationship, a supernatural encounter begins an extreme transformation of their love, their lives, and their flesh.

Although Alison Brie and husband Dave Franco have shared the screen in the past, they truly sink into each other with some skin-crawling, albeit heartfelt and hilarious performances in writer-director Michael Shanks’ feature debut Together, which seamlessly blends body horror and romantic comedy.
The film stars the real-life couple as Millie and Tim, who relocate from their bustling city life to a quaint home in the country after Millie gets a job teaching at a local elementary school. Following a hike in which they stumble upon a cave with a mysterious water source, they find themselves inexplicably drawn to each other.
As they bid farewell to their group friends at a going-away party, it’s quickly evident that the couple is growing apart as Tim has a personal crisis over sacrificing his dreams to let Millie chase hers.

The independent film community settling into Park City where the next crop of indie films will launch at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival has something to celebrate: a 2024 where audiences turned out and started to turn the market around.
“In the independent theatrical world post-Covid, we were asking ‘Are we going to exist?’ And the answer is, ‘Yes. We can’,” says producer Erik Feig, founder and CEO of Picturestart. “These movies are working on a financial level. They are working on a cultural level, and that’s what theatrical movies are all about.”
“I’m feeling that there’s definitely more opportunity bubbling around in terms of the audiences that are showing up,” agrees Lia Buman, co-founder of Tango Entertainment. “And then, when a film is hitting its target with its audience, that’s how word of mouth builds and then that’s how they grow and grow. It’s almost old school.

The Fithian Group, launched last fall by longtime NATO chief John Fithian, has developed a data-driven, digital theatrical distribution marketplace it hopes will revolutionize how independent filmmakers and rights-holders book and release movies in theaters.
An early version of the platform, called Attend, rolls out Stateside in the first quarter of 2025. The U.S. and Australia will be initial markets.
Dozens of filmmakers and producers from Sean Baker to Steven Soderbergh Patty Jenkins and Ted Hope are supporting the concept, signing on to an Attend statement “that modern, democratic, data-driven marketplace providing an efficient and effective way to distribute all genres of film directly to theatres and audiences is a vital need for our industry and art form.”
Powered by entertainment tech firm Vista Group, the marketplace allows filmmakers to upload details and materials for their films directly onto the platform. Exhibitors can search the database, and Attend recommends movies.

The former leader of theater-owner’s group NATO has a new way to get your independent film into movie theaters — one intended to cut out the middleman.
John Fithian is launching an online marketplace to connect filmmakers directly with exhibitors. The platform is called “Attend,” and it puts the “intelligence” into its artificial intelligence. Attend’s tech, powered by the Vista Group, pairs filmmakers with the specific theaters best suited to their movie. For exhibitors, Attend is a portal to a broader range of content. This way, filmmakers retain the rights to their movie, and exhibitors keep control over their screens.
Sorry about all of that, distributors.
A filmmaker uploads details about (and assets from) their films directly into Attend, including metadata and other specifics. The platform’s AI will match the movie with theaters based on their customer data, local demographics, and affinity groups.
Attend will launch an alpha phase in the U.

While there are some side stories and reimaginings that could still be brought to the screen in live action, that’s not the way things are going right now. Earlier this year, we heard that Lionsgate was developing a Twilight animated series, and now that series is set up at the Netflix streaming service! Netflix also revealed that this animated series is an adaptation of the Midnight Sun novel.
When we first heard that Lionsgate would be taking Twilight to TV, it was said that Meyer was expected to be involved with the series, with Wyck Godfrey and Erik Feig serving as executive producers. Feig...

Following news that an upcoming Twilight animated remake was shopping around for streaming services, Netflix has taken on the animated Midnight Sun show. The series is being developed by Lionsgate Television and will be written and produced by Sinead Daly (The Walking Dead: World Beyond and Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency). Joining Daly as executive producers are Stephenie Meyer (the original author of the Twilight series), Meghan Hibbett, Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, Erik Feig, and Samie Kim Falvey. By all accounts, Midnight Sun will be much better than a straightforwardTwilight remake.
What excites me about this news is that Midnight Sun is itself a retelling of Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Meyer essentially wrote a fanfiction of her own work, written from Edward Cullens Pov. Midnight Sun provides much-needed dimension to Edwards character and contextualizes and even makes light of his flaws. Not only this, it also serves to flesh out...

Don't know who Stephenie Meyer is? Well, she's the author of the bestselling book series Twilight. Yes, the same vampire novels that were adapted into movies that ended up being box-office hits. “Midnight Sun,” the new animated “Twilight” series based on Stephenie Meyer’s novel of the same name, has landed at Netflix.
The streamer has granted a straight-to-series order for the animated show, which has officially begun development, Netflix announced Wednesday. The project, which hails from Lionsgate Television, is described as a “retelling of ‘Twilight’ from the perspective of Edward Cullen.”
The news comes months after Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns confirmed the company would be shopping around the series during a Morgan Stanley media conference in March, saying, “I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.”
The series was first reported to be in development at Lionsgate TV in April 2023, with Meyer’s involvement expected.
Meyer will executive produce alongside Meghan Hibbett for Fickle Fish Films, while additional EPs include Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen for Temple Hill Entertainment and Erik Feig and Samie Kim Falvey for Picturestart.

An animated show based on the Twilight retelling Midnight Sun is in the works. The 2020 Stephenie Meyer novel reinterpreted the events of the first book in the iconic young adult paranormal romance series from the perspective of the vampire Edward Cullen rather than original protagonist Bella Swan. Although the manuscript was being written early enough for it to be used to help Robert Pattinson prepare to play Edward in the 2008 movie adaptation of Twilight, the first twelve chapters were leaked online, causing Meyer to cease writing the book for some time, delaying its publication.
Per Deadline, Netflix has announced that the Midnight Sun animated series, which has been in development at Lionsgate Television for nearly two years, has been given a straight-to-series order by Netflix. Twilight is getting a second (after)life in the form of an animated series at Netflix.
The streamer has given a straight-to-series order and begun development on a show based on Midnight Sun, author Stephenie Meyer’s companion novel to her mega-selling Twilight series. The book is a retelling of the events of Twilight from vampire Edward Cullen’s point of view; the main series is told from the perspective of Bella Swan, the human object of Edward’s fascination.
Lionsgate Television, which began early development on a Twilight TV project last year, will produce the series. Lionsgate’s film division released the four Twilight movies.
Sinead Daly (Hulu’s Tell Me Lies, Max’s Raised by Wolves), who has been attached to the project from the outset, will adapt the novel and executive produce along with the Meyer and Meghan Hibbett of Fickle Fish Films, Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen...

Summit announced Red 3 in 2013 before Red 2 was even released, but it never materialized due to declining ratings and box office returns. Bruce Willis' retirement from acting marks the end of any possibility for Red 3, leading to no ongoing development for the film. The Red TV series announced in 2015 may be the only potential future for the franchise, but even that seems unlikely due to lack of updates.
The 2010 action thriller Red is a loose adaptation of the Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner comic series of the same name, and the first movie was successful enough to warrant a sequel, but Red 3 never arrived despite rumors of its development. The franchise featured an all-star cast including Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, and John Malkovich, all playing aging spies pushed back into action when their own organization attempted to eradicate them.

Turns out, Robert Pattinson helped make spider-monkeys immortal.
The “Twilight” actor selected the now-iconic (or infamous) “You better hold on tight, spider-monkey” line out of a series of phrases that writer/director Catherine Hardwicke came up with on set.
Hardwicke told Entertainment Weekly while at Comic Con 2024 that the enduring phrase from the 2008 film was Pattinson’s idea to include.
“I was kind of worried,” Hardwicke said about filming the often-silent romance between Pattinson’s Edward and Kristen Stewart’s Bella. “We were shooting for a few days and there were so many scenes where they just look into each other’s eyes. ‘Look, look, look.’ And I’m like, man, I better come up with some dialogue.”
Hardwicke wrote different lines for Pattinson to say, and lo and behold, the spider-monkey pet name for Bella stood out.
“I handed them to Rob, and I said, ‘See if you like any of these.

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The Borderlands reshoots have been completed, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Lionsgate is now gearing up to finally release Borderlands into the world on August 9th… and with that date right around the corner, a featurette has arrived online to give us a look at the “dysfunctional family” of characters at the heart of the story.
