Utopia and Fathom Entertainment will premiere “A Rad Documentary” in more than 700 screens nationwide on March 20 in honor of Rad Day 2025. Celebrating the 80s BMX cult classic film “Rad,” the new documentary revisits production, catches up with the cast, and interrogates the film’s impact on pop culture.

“As a BMX’er, being a stunt rider in Rad was a dream come true but producing ‘A Rad Documentary’ and helping tell the story behind the film has been a full circle moment,” said producer Chris Phoenix. “It’s incredible to be able to share it with the fans whose passion and dedication to the movie have made it a classic for almost 40 years.”

“A Rad Documentary” will premiere as part of a double feature alongside a 4k restoration of “Rad” on March 20 in theaters across the U.S. and Canada. Tickets for Rad Day are now on sale at FathomEntertainment.

Kiernan Shipka and Mckenna Grace are teaming up for The Nowhere Game, a high-stakes survival thriller produced by Erik Feig’s Picturestart. Shipka, fresh off The Last Showgirl, and Grace, set to appear in the next Scream film, will take on roles that push them to the limit.

Barunson E&a Boards Thai Film ‘Delete The Movie’

Parasite producer Barunson E&a is boarding Thai studio Gdh’s feature Delete The Movie, which is based on the universe created in the Netflix series Delete. Parkpoom Wongpoom will return as director and writer, with the film shifting the action to the South Korean capital, Seoul. Delete The Movie explores an ominous world where a mysterious phone has the power to erase people from existence. Barunson E&a, known for Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar winner Parasite, launched international operations in 2022 and has since invested in and handled sales on non-Korean titles such as Taiwanese gangster rom-com Miss Shampoo and Vietnamese horror-comedy Don’t Cry, Butterfly. Gdh is known for Asian box office hits such as last year’s How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies and 2017’s Bad Genius, which was recently adapted as a Hollywood movie produced by Erik Feig and Patrick Wachsberger.

It's always exciting when a new horror film gets picked up, particularly by distributors like A24 or Neon. These companies have a keen eye for great horror content, and more often than not, the films they acquire are usually both unique and boundary-pushing. One of these indie powerhouses just snagged the worldwide rights to a new body horror, and based on what we know so far about this movie, it's something you're going to want to see.

We're talking about Neon, the studio that delivered what is arguably the best horror film of 2024, Longlegs. If you haven't seen Longlegs, maybe you're familiar with other Neon horror movies such as Immaculate, Cuckoo, Possessor and Infinity Pool. Now, the company has another horror flick to add to its lineup, and we're hoping it hits theaters this year.

The film is titled Together, and it stars real-life husband and wife Alison Brie and Dave Franco.

Update: Neon has sent out a press release to confirm that the distribution deal has closed and they have acquired the worldwide rights to Together.

Now, it’s looking like Neon will be the distributor to bring this good time to horror fans, as Deadline reports that, after “a days long bidding battle,” Neon is close to securing the worldwide rights to the film. WME Independent has been fielding offers from interested distributors ever since Together‘s premiere screening on the 26th, and Deadline reports that all of the major buyers of indie fare were in the mix.

The independent film community settling into Park City where the next crop of indie films will launch at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival has something to celebrate: a 2024 where audiences turned out and started to turn the market around.

“In the independent theatrical world post-Covid, we were asking ‘Are we going to exist?’ And the answer is, ‘Yes. We can’,” says producer Erik Feig, founder and CEO of Picturestart. “These movies are working on a financial level. They are working on a cultural level, and that’s what theatrical movies are all about.”

“I’m feeling that there’s definitely more opportunity bubbling around in terms of the audiences that are showing up,” agrees Lia Buman, co-founder of Tango Entertainment. “And then, when a film is hitting its target with its audience, that’s how word of mouth builds and then that’s how they grow and grow. It’s almost old school.

Just ahead of the new year, the Sundance Film Festival has unveiled its 2025 slate of programming that’s packed with exciting and buzzworthy new horror.

Today the fest announced their comprehensive slate of films selected from the fest that will take place January 23 –February 2, 2025, in person in Park City, Salt Lake City, and the Sundance Resort, along with a selection of films available online starting January 30. The Fithian Group, launched last fall by longtime NATO chief John Fithian, has developed a data-driven, digital theatrical distribution marketplace it hopes will revolutionize how independent filmmakers and rights-holders book and release movies in theaters.

An early version of the platform, called Attend, rolls out Stateside in the first quarter of 2025. The U.S. and Australia will be initial markets.

Dozens of filmmakers and producers from Sean Baker to Steven Soderbergh Patty Jenkins and Ted Hope are supporting the concept, signing on to an Attend statement “that modern, democratic, data-driven marketplace providing an efficient and effective way to distribute all genres of film directly to theatres and audiences is a vital need for our industry and art form.”

The former leader of theater-owner’s group NATO has a new way to get your independent film into movie theaters — one intended to cut out the middleman.

John Fithian is launching an online marketplace to connect filmmakers directly with exhibitors. The platform is called “Attend,” and it puts the “intelligence” into its artificial intelligence. Attend’s tech, powered by the Vista Group, pairs filmmakers with the specific theaters best suited to their movie. For exhibitors, Attend is a portal to a broader range of content. This way, filmmakers retain the rights to their movie, and exhibitors keep control over their screens.

Sorry about all of that, distributors.

A filmmaker uploads details about (and assets from) their films directly into Attend, including metadata and other specifics. The platform’s AI will match the movie with theaters based on their customer data, local demographics, and affinity groups.

“Midnight Sun,” the new animated “Twilight” series based on Stephenie Meyer’s novel of the same name, has landed at Netflix.

The streamer has granted a straight-to-series order for the animated show, which has officially begun development, Netflix announced Wednesday. The project, which hails from Lionsgate Television, is described as a “retelling of ‘Twilight’ from the perspective of Edward Cullen.”

The news comes months after Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns confirmed the company would be shopping around the series during a Morgan Stanley media conference in March, saying, “I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.”

The series was first reported to be in development at Lionsgate TV in April 2023, with Meyer’s involvement expected.

Meyer will executive produce alongside Meghan Hibbett for Fickle Fish Films, while additional EPs include Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen for Temple Hill Entertainment and Erik Feig and Samie Kim Falvey for Picturestart.

The streamer has given a straight-to-series order and begun development on a show based on Midnight Sun, author Stephenie Meyer’s companion novel to her mega-selling Twilight series. Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service Max has shared a first look at its Original film Sweethearts, starring Kiernan Shipka and Nico Hiraga. The movie will begin streaming on Thursday, November 28.

Sweethearts has been rated R for sexual content, language throughout, teen partying, and brief graphic nudity.

In the film, two college freshmen make a pact to break up with their high school sweethearts over Thanksgiving break, leading them on a chaotic night out in their hometown that tests their codependent friendship.

The cast includes Kiernan Shipka, Nico Hiraga, Caleb Hearon, Tramell Tillman, Ava Demary, Charlie Hall, Joel Kim Booster, and Christine Taylor.

Max announced today that Sweethearts, its New Line rom-com starring Kiernan Shipka (Twisters) and Nico Hiraga (Love in Taipei), will premiere on the streamer on November 28. They also unveiled a few first look stills, which you can view above and below.

In the film marking the directorial debut of Jordan Weiss, creator of Hulu’s comedy Dollface, two college freshmen make a pact to break up with their high school sweethearts over Thanksgiving break, leading them on a chaotic night out in their hometown that puts their codependent friendship to the test.

The “Twilight” actor selected the now-iconic (or infamous) “You better hold on tight, spider-monkey” line out of a series of phrases that writer/director Catherine Hardwicke came up with on set.

Hardwicke told Entertainment Weekly while at Comic Con 2024 that the enduring phrase from the 2008 film was Pattinson’s idea to include.

“I was kind of worried,” Hardwicke said about filming the often-silent romance between Pattinson’s Edward and Kristen Stewart’s Bella. “We were shooting for a few days and there were so many scenes where they just look into each other’s eyes. ‘Look, look, look.’ And I’m like, man, I better come up with some dialogue.”

Hardwicke wrote different lines for Pattinson to say, and lo and behold, the spider-monkey pet name for Bella stood out.

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The project is also executive produced by Lindy Goldstein through her Lindy Goldstein Productions banner and follows skating champions who must navigate romance and rivalry, while trying to achieve their dreams on the Olympic stage.
