Toronto Police have opened a homicide investigation after local filmmaker Reeyaz Habib was found dead in the city’s West End on June 8.
Habib, a graduate of the School of Cinematic Arts at USC, recently completed his directorial debut, the comedy Fat Lady Sriracha, which is in postproduction. Toronto Police Services on Wednesday said the homicide and missing persons unit was investigating a “suspicious death” that occurred June 8 in the Liberty Village neighborhood and appealed for help from the public to establish the director’s whereabouts between June 4 and 8.
“Reeyaz was a wonderfully kind spirit, full of an excitement for life and telling the complex yet necessary stories within it. He brought us all together to fulfill a lifelong dream. We’re extremely grateful for the time and trust we got to have with him and look forward to honoring his legacy by making sure his story gets told,” Fat Lady Sriracha...

The Great Barrier Reef’s capacity to survive is championed in IMAX documentary Great Barrier Reef 3D, directed by Steve Amezdroz and shot by cinematographer Richard Fitzpatrick.
Examining the reef’s resilience in the face of climate change and coral decline, the family-friendly movie encourages young audiences to reflect on the role they too can play in protecting this unique marine reserve.
Narrated by Eric Bana, the film follows reef guardian Jemma Craig on an expedition along Australia’s east coast to Green Island, Fitzroy Island and Lady Elliot Island as she documents the work being done by volunteers and citizen scientists to help researchers gain a more comprehensive understanding of the natural world.

Is it a makeover ... or a breakover? According to Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth's recent body makeover may have gotten a boost from good old-fashioned heartbreak. "You spend a little time in Heartbreak Hotel, that's what happens. Heartbreak Hotel diet is a good one," Priestley joked with People at the National Association of Television Program Executives (Natpe) convention in Miami on Monday, where he is promoting the new season of his comedy Call Me Fitz. But when asked if a real life romance between Garth and Luke Perry - who the actor caught up with during last summer's Old Navy...

Some people may know him as Brandon Walsh, others Richard Fitzpatrick; whatever you call Jason Priestley, you can also add “director” to that title. THR tells us that the former heartthrob is making his feature-length debut in the form of Cas & Dylan, for Montefiore Films.
Tatiana Maslany (The Vow) has already signed to lead the “dark road-trip comedy about a 61-year-old dying man who plans to end his life on his own terms. That quest takes a detour when the man ends up on the lam with an eccentric 22-year-old woman.” There’s no word as to who will be playing Maslany‘s elder counterpart. Jessie Gabe (Being Erica) wrote the script; Mark Montefiore will produce.
This isn’t the first time Priestley has stepped behind the camera, however, as he directed episodes of Call Me Fritz, Haven, Beverly Hills: 90210, and the 1999 documentary about The Barenaked Ladies, Barenaked America. I...

For the hard-working actor, director and producer, Jason Priestley is a man of many talents and he has stretched out his varied career to not only encompass many entertainment career “hats,” but also an array of diverse characters that keeps him busy. Taking a few minutes out of his jam-packed schedule, Jason provided a few candid responses about his morally-challenged, yet highly entertaining character Richard Fitzpatrick in the Canadian comedy series Call Me Fitz, as well as some brief thoughts on his upcoming appearance in Stephen King’s Bag Of Bones and Syfy’s supernatural thriller series Haven.
How did you initially learn about Call Me Fitz and how did you become involved with it?
Jason: I was directing a web series for Warner Bros. called The Lake and our writers had just worked with Sheri Elwood on Defying Gravity. They told me about her and this show that she had written.

Ever since I first saw the original Dawn of the Dead at an all-night horror film marathon, I've had a fascination for Romero's Dead saga. I'm not big on gore but there is something about the concept of zombies that intrigues me. Every new addition to Romero's series adds something to the mythology and expands the natural history of the flesh eating living dead. George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead is no exception even though it's the least satisfying entry so far.
Survival of the Dead picks up more-or-less immediately after its predecessor, Diary of the Dead (reviewed here). It also has a direct connection to that film in its principle character, Sarge (played by Calgary-born Alan Van Sprang). He's a member of the National Guard who went freelance with a bunch of his former comrades when the dead became undead. He appeared briefly in Diary boarding the...

Chicago – It pains me to point out the flaws of “George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead.” Two of the most influential movies in my entire life are “Night of the Living Dead” and “Dawn of the Dead” and I could write a book on the importance of one of the most essential horror directors of all time. But, despite a fantastic Blu-ray release, “Survival of the Dead” disappoints.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
For one of the few times in Romero’s amazing career, it feels like he’s spinning his wheels. “Survival” is half-baked and poorly-constructed, a serious step down from “Diary of the Dead” and “Land of the Dead”. Despite a few well-made action scenes, the sixth “Dead” film feels more like the work of a director inspired by Romero than something made by the master himself. It’s a zombie version of what he does so...

Survival of the Dead Written and Directed by: George A. Romero Starring: Kenneth Welsh, Alan Van Sprang, Richard Fitzpatrick, Athena Karkanis, Devon Bostick, Philippa Domville, Kathleen Munroe George Romero has totally lost it. In fact, his latest zombie opera, Survival of the Dead, is so bad that I’m beginning to doubt he ever really had it. Romero, like everybody’s other least-favorite George, has been tainted by his early success, and is now every bit the cluelessly misguided, ineffectual storyteller Lucas is. It’s actually astounding that Survival of the Dead comes from someone who’s been in the business for forty years, because it positively reeks of amateurism. The writing is dense and talky, with stilted, masturbatory dialogue, and some of the laziest attempts at horror I’ve ever seen. Not only is Survival not scary, it’s not entertaining, and for all its attempts at social commentary,...

There’s just know “wow” factor with this movie. There’s a “cool” factor but it’s only few and far between. With that said, it’s still one of the best video game adaptations out there. Gyllenhaal and his stunt double do some pretty good parkour on the building tops. Unfortunately, the story is a little too muddled and confusing. A theme in George Romero.s Survival Of The Dead, his sixth zombie opus, is taking sides . where we stand, and where you stand and I suspect his legion of fans will be split into sides as well. Like the director.s previous entry Diary Of The Dead, many will embrace it but just as many will loathe it. Romero has earned this horror fan.s loyalty and I’ll always look forward to seeing his films, but Survival Of The Dead has to be judged in context of his earlier Dead entries, and I found it a mixed bag at best. It.s not the worst in the series (hey, it.s better than Day) but it.s all over the map in terms of tone and Romero seems to have trouble finding the right balance between horror and spoof. It also suffers from a completely ridiculous plot as well as inappropriate slapstick,...

I'll get the good part of George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead out of the way. It's a big one - do you like the Moon? Great. So do millions of Americans. If you like the Moon, Survival of the Dead has the most enormous image of the Moon you have ever seen.
It is so gargantuan, it surpasses even an image of the Moon about to crash into the Earth-the kind a sage and steady African-American President, like Morgan Freeman or Dennis Haysbert, is needed to save humanity from. This Moon has already slammed into the Atlantic and is cleaving away the last moments of life on the planet. That is how unrelentingly ginormous the image of the Moon is.

You've got to give George A. Romero credit. It'd be ridiculously easy for the legendary horror filmmaker to rest on his laurels, to cash a paycheck and crank out lowest-common-denominator, stupid zombie movies that merely tarnish the very thing that made him a legend: the granddaddy of all zombie films, Night of the Living Dead (1968). Romero hasn't done that, however. Though may of his fans would love to see him given more opportunities to direct non-zombie films, he's the first to admit he loves them, that they're his niche, and that he's happy to make them -- on his own terms. Dawn of the Dead (1978) was awesome (and in gore-ious color!), Day of the Dead (1985) had its great moments, and Land of the Dead (2005) boasted such Hollywood stars as Dennis Hopper, John Leguizamo, and Simon Baker, as well as horror fave Asia Argento. Then, with Diary of the Dead (2007), Romero went all Cloverfield (2008) on audiences,...

Survival of the Dead is the 6th film from George A. Romero to look at a world where humans are in the minority and the zombies rule. As the battle between humans and zombies escalates, the master filmmaker continues to reinvent the modern horror genre with wicked humor and pointed social commentary.
Off the coast of Delaware sits the cozy Plum Island where two families are locked in a struggle for power, as it has been for generations. The O’Flynn’s, headed by patriarch Patrick O’Flynn (Kenneth Welsh) approach the zombie plague with a shoot-to-kill attitude. The Muldoons, headed by Shamus Muldoon (Richard Fitzpatrick), feel that the zombies should be quarantined and kept ‘alive,’ in hopes that a solution will someday be found.

In the 40-plus years since “Night of the Living Dead,” George A. Romero has leveraged his six post-apocalyptic zombie tales as allegories. War is his theme here, as it has been in previous installments, although perhaps more simplistically than before, likening global conflict to a family feud.
Immediately following the events in 2007’s “Diary of the Dead,” warring factions on Plum Island disagree on what to do with their “deadheads.” The O’Flynns, led by Patrick (Kenneth Welsh), have assembled a posse to shoot zombies on sight, whether or not they’re formerly loved ones. The Muldoons, headed by Shamus (Richard Fitzpatrick), advocate quarantine, preferring not to slaughter friends and family in case a cure is ever discovered.
The action does pick up in the climactic shootout, and for brief moments Romero is creatively grotesque. But there’s little style or energy — particularly for a director with-it enough (even if...

One of the few good scenes in Survival. Courtesy of Magnet Releasing.
Zombie legend and horror icon, George A. Romero, loves to beat a dead horse. In Survival of the Dead, his lovely creatures actually eat one. Symbolism? Perhaps. Much like the horse shown in the flick, Romero should have taken this script and "put it down." The audience will want to feed this 90 minute feature to the walking-dead if they could.
Easily the worst installment in the storied Living Dead franchise, Romero and everyone involved aren't trying to do anything with Survival. Besides the patent gore, which only reveals itself at the end, the flick is ironically lifeless. How the "dead" are handled is slightly creative this time around, but I'm stretching to find positives in a flick that even the SyFy channel may think twice about running.

Red band trailer for George Romero’s “Survival of the Dead”, complete with intro by Georgie boy (via IGN). The film itself is not really bad in the sense of bad, but it’s pretty generic and by-the-numbers for Romero, who has really pounded the zombie genre into the ground in his twilight years. I feel sorry for the bloke; on the one hand, this is his bread and butter and he deserves to reap all the rewards he can from it, but on the other hand, it’s kind of sad to see a former master chase his own tail. George A. Romero has never made films for the sake of it. Despite the huge success and cultural impact of his Living Dead series, he only ever got behind the camera when he had something to say. As the years shuffle by, cultures change and cracks appear - cracks Romero could mine for biting(!) social commentary. This is why there were 10, 7 and 20 year gaps, respectively, between Night, Dawn, Day and 2005's long-awaited comeback, Land...

The sixth zombie film of his career, George A. Romero's "Survival Of The Dead" yet again successfully reworks the genre that he almost single-handedly invented with his 1968 debut "Night Of The Living Dead". This time, splicing the undead with tropes of the western, we are transported to Plum Island, off the coast of Delaware. Set just a few days after the dead began to rise up, the film follows two rival Irish clans . the O'Flynns and the Muldoons . as they fight over how to deal with the crisis. With ageing patriarch Patrick O'Flynn (Kenneth Welsh) exiled to the mainland when he comes up against his rival Seamus Muldoon (Richard Fitzpatrick), tensions rise when he returns with a band of mercenaries . led by Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead alumni Alan Van Sprang . who begin...

Diary of the Dead was George A. Romero’s handheld camera zombie romp which was a nice attempt to try something new in the genre he helped to create.
In theory the notion of the handheld camera thrown into the zombie horde should have made for a thrilling ride but in practise it actually contributed to a detached experience, so it’s no surprise that this device is being dropped for the next installment in Romero’s zombie series.
The official synopsis is here:

Romero (The Crazies, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead), one of the most influential and respected horror auteurs of all time, to look at a world where humans are in the minority and the zombies rule.

So what’s been going on with George Romero’s “Survival of the Dead”? The film is getting its premiere on video-on-demand, Xbox Live, Playstation and Amazon’s video downloading service April 30, 2010, before taking a limited run in theaters on May 28 courtesy of Magnet Releasing. Here’s a Red Band teaser trailer for the movie (I don’t know why it’s a Red Band, I guess there is some blood and such) via Myspace. It’s a brief minute-long trailer and it seems to be going for laughs. I guess. I wouldn’t necessarily go this route to sell a Romero zombie movie, but hey, I’m not Romero. Magnet Releasing has unveiled a one sheet high-res poster for George A. Romero’s upcoming film Survival of the Dead! This will be Romero’s 6th zombie flick and is premiering on VOD, Xbox Live, Playstation and Amazon on April 30 before hitting theaters on May 28. The poster reveals what we should already anticipate from Romero — the walking dead looking to feed on flesh. But this time around, “Survival isn’t just for the living.”
With the recent release of Romero’s remake, The Crazies, hitting the silver screen, and now this sneak peak, it’s good to see ol’ Romero isn’t getting soft in his old age. It actually puts a smile to my face to think I might still love zombies even when I’m gray and balding.
Below is the poster followed by a synopsis of the film. Let us know what you think!
